Judy Freman Hold On
Hi Russ, Thanks, I've never been referred to as an evergreen classic before! Yes, apart from the original US RCA 45 (RARE on a stocker), there is indeed a unreleased RCA LP in circulation which features an alternative version, which has a fantastic additional trumpet break and additional chorus. It is not an acetate, it is vinyl, it has no picture cover and it came with the engineer's original notes too. As already stated it was turned up by Benji in Germany from a sound engineer in Cologne. Yes, Greg used to play it at the Capitol Soul Club, and it used to surprise a few tired legs on the dancefloor as the the realisation of it being a longer version hit home! d.

Flashlight
Off on a tangent..not really my era of collecting, but I have a 12" WD on Philly Groove (dist. by SalSoul)...were there actual SalSoul label copies too? (5:07 on this 12")

Help With Ginger Taylor Often Played Track
From one ex-Gloucester boy to another, cheers! Naturally if anyone can supply a snippet / live recording of BarlowD, it would be very much appreciated to confirm it is indeed the one I seek.

Willie Hutch - Your Love Has Made Me A Man
A fabulous record for sure...and I sold a WD but a few days ago on here too!
-
Carl Underwood - Play In Your Own Backyard
Carl Underwood got plenty of spins in the mid to late 80's too. It wasn't an easy disc to find back then either, but it was still less than a ton...sigh.

Willie Hutch - Your Love Has Made Me A Man
I sold one six months ago for £30. Rarer than the WD imo, but possibly not as desirable?

Ann Sexton-you've Been Gone Too Long
Not surprised to read that...good slice of Soul that it is. I find loadsa SS7 45's over here (including her LP regularly), but only x1 copy of YGTUWYG in almost 4 years. I actually included YGMM and IHW on compilations back in the late 80's early 90's...great set a pipes has our Ann.

Help With Ginger Taylor Often Played Track
Not wanting to hijack the thread, but I'm also after info on a track that the Ginger one once played at the 100 Club many moons ago. He played it from a 10" acetate (didn't look vintage) and when questioned he said he had the original (vinyl/acetate, I don't know) at home, but it was cracked. It was a Carolina sounding thing with nice organ work on the intro, reminiscent of Anthony & The Aqualads kinda thing. Never heard it since. Any info/guesses appreciated, but please note it is not anything obvious.

Ann Sexton-you've Been Gone Too Long
Off on a tangent, if anyone collects her stuff, I have an interesting WD of her rare-groove pumper, 'You're gonna miss me' on SS7 (white and black one side, white and blue on the other!); and a beautiful black stock copy of her sublime, 'I'm his wife (You're just a friend)' backed with the dancer, 'You got to use what you got', which is worthy of scene spins...has anyone ever spun it out?

Allen Sisters "downtown Crowd"
I had a finished label copy. This was purchased from Ady Pountain and was the copy he played at Yate...it's first scene exposure. It remained a one-off for quite a few years until Tim Ashibende turned up a couple of plain white label vinyl test presses (advertised in the small print in Black Echoes, as I recall). Being the ahem...'completist' that I 'sometimes' am, I bought one of those too! I later sold the finished label copy to Keb, who aired it a few times post-Stafford. I later still sold my test press, but then got it back from AlanH. On reflection I wish I had kept my finished label copy as a few more copies of the plain white labels have turned up over the years, whereas the finished label copies haven't. Carl Fortnum has (had?) a finished label copy whilst DJing at the Dome too...we all gave it a spin there, and hell it is worthy of scene spins galore...imo.

Future Of Northern Soul
I too feel cheated by those charletons on Tomorrow's World. I recall within one programme they featured a 'Vocal Eliminator', which when plugged into one's Hi-Fi would remove the vocal from ANY tune merely at the twist of a knob. Hunted for years for one...all I got offered were graphic equalisers which never really did what I wanted. (I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere, and am now fully expecting Rod to find it! )

Cover Up's
There are 500+ entires in the Classic Cover Ups pages, via the link mentioned above. Additions more than welcome.

Darrel Banks On Ebay, Mint Uk Demo
I've also seen plain yellow demo labelled UK copies with hand-typed credits. I find UK presses over here too...along with French, German, Italian and Dutch stuff too! Last week I found a Dutch Al Wilson 'Now I know what love is' for a few Yen. However, I've now just recalled a recent memory I've been trying to surpress...I missed a Stateside stock copy of the Invitations (WWWMB) just before Christmas...a collector in front of me took it...840 Yen...about £4!!! Naturally I proceeded to tell him that he didn't need it and he should let me have it as it was 'only' a UK copy! He said he had a US copy too, but he still didn't put it back...grrr! C'est la vie, or shoganai as we say over here.

Roger Hatcher - Sweetest Girl In The World
...and PM'ed you back

Frank Foster - Moving To Detroit - Live
THIS is what Northern Soul instrumentals are all about...pure dancefloor fodder...if only the recording quality was less bassy. It is actually a Bell acetate with one word type on it, 'Moods'. I wonder if there is a vocal version out there somewhere yet to be discovered?

Musicor
Here's my old WD of TNWTTAG...yes tougher than the black stocker. Seen equal amounts of WDs vs. Stockers for her YLSW. Porgy & Monarchs' 'That girl' is tougher on a WD, though lists often state 'Rare black copy'...nonsense imo. Another one which receives varied comments on sales lists is Sammy Ambrose 'Welcome to dreamsville', which seems slightly tougher on a WD...imo

Wade Flemmons Other Place Vee-jay Demo Or Issue
I collected VeeJay avidly for years...well for the Soul releases anyway! I even had a compilation lined up ready to roll, but I left the relevant record company for another before I could get it scheduled. Anyway I digress, I've had a few numbers on the plain white demo label variants...the Dontells and Cherylle Thompson spring immediately to mind, and they were also on thick vinyl too...can't recall the pressing plant, sorry. Never had a TOP on a plain white one...rare...and in my experience I've seen more stock copies than demos of said track, though only just! Frickin' fabulous track...oozes Soul...tremendous lyric, but can also understand that it isn't for everyone being the beat ballad that it is. (Susan Maughn is pleasant enough too.)

Frank Howard - Judy - Excello
Same here, Gareth...was kinda hoping you did have something concrete for us. I wonder if there were any clues on the master tape boxes/notes...pageing Mr.Croasdell or Mr.Rounce to reception, please!

Evie Sands Version Of I'll Do Anything
I recall it surfacing about 5 years ago on master tapes...I'm sure I cut it for Adey C, who then played it at the 100 Club at the time...may still do, but I find it quite difficult to get to the club nowadays...bit far to go!
-
Brenton Wood
Good for you, Tony...but it is a pile of pants! 'Cross the bridge' is the only good side of the x3 imo...red stockers and WDs, East and West Coast variants on them both. (No Japanese release mind! )
-
Frank Howard - Judy - Excello
You 100% sure on that, Gareth? Mossy, you may wanna check out the discs on Excello from the Exotics, Stacy Lane, the Avons and the Firebirds...I'm sure some will appeal to you.

Roger Hatcher - Sweetest Girl In The World
Roger was indeed brother of Willie and cousin to Charles (Edwin Starr). He also recorded a disc on Dottys (Detroit) as Little Rodger Hatcher.

Roger Hatcher - Sweetest Girl In The World
