Lee Bates - What Am I Gonna Do - Instant/ix Chains
The flip on both the "Instant" and "IX Chains" releases is Your Love Is Slipping Away. This is one of the reasons I've posted the question, it just seems too coincidental that both sides of each disc are the same as each other, but on different labels for them to be different recordings. If someone doesn't do it before me, I'll do some digging and find the copy of voices the discography was in. John

James D. Hall - I Wanna Get Into You
Are there matrix numbers in the run out, if so are they the same? I mailed him on the question of repressings also and have a reply on my email at home, which I will post up tonight. I bit the bullet and bought one from his site for $80 last week, but still awaiting a debit on my account, which hasnt come through yet. If consensus is that they are represses I think potentially there will be a lot of returns. John

Lee Bates - What Am I Gonna Do - Instant/ix Chains
Are they exactly the same recording? Was Instant the "local" release and IX Chains put out for a larger distribution? Steve Plumb, commented on the record when he wrote the IX Chains discography in Voices, but I cant find that edition at the moment. Cheers, John

Can I Really Be A Soul Fan
Surely Soul is Soul whatever the tag put to it. Here are just three records I have heard/danced at do's over the years and the other sides are listened to at home. Sam Williams - Love Slipped Through My Finger/Lets Talk It Over - Tower Bill Brandon - Something Wonderful/Rainbow Road - Tower Candi Statten - Too Hurt To Cry/Mr & Mrs Untrue - Fame Are they Northern - yes, are they deep - yes. They just happen to be on the other side to each other. It's the dancier side thats played out and associated as Northen, because all a do is (and I'm trying to find a better term, but cant at the moment), is a "disco". There are a few beat ballads that have been classed as Northen, Cody Black - MR Blue springs to mind and I've had trouble dancing to that. The more tunes, whatever their clasification that can be given airplay (at a do/radio or on here) can only be good for soul in general.

New Released Wd's Why Are They Twice As Much To Buy?
I'm expecting a lot of stick for this post, but I would like some clarification. Originally (I thought) WD's were sent to radio stations/DJ's to promote interest in a record and stimulate the general public into buying a record when it was officially released. These were limited press, as the record companies didn't want to spend too much on pressing records if they flopped. Why are the demo's of Selecta, Hayley, Grapevine and other labels selling for double the issues? Today is a different market to the 60's/70's and there is probably a smaller collecting circle and with web sites like this and the others, raising the profiles of new releases. When these records are advertised, both issues and demo's seem to be for sale simultaneously, which to me, seems that a false market has been created. I know some people like demo's more than issues (i'm the other way, with a preference for issues). Is there a real need to charge this premium? What is the ratio of Demo's to issues pressed? I'm not having a go at these labels, I'd just like more clarity as I seem to see a lot more demo's than issues for sale on various web sites. John

Can I Really Be A Soul Fan
From my perspective there is a difference between Southern and Deep soul. I class Southern as the "local" sound mainly recorded in states such as Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, etc...(which do include Deep recordings) and categorise it as people categorise Detroit and Chicago sounds (there some gut renching stuff out of these places too). Yes a lot of deep was recorded in the south, but they had their dancers as well. Labels such as: Future Stars, Bluesoul, Soul-Po-Tion just to quote a few from Brian Pousts Web site. Stax from my perspective is mainly southern soul so was Southcamp and Quinvy, they too had their dancers. George Jackson - I Found What I Wanted on Verve (IMO is southern soul, but was given a X-Over tag when it was played a Thorn). For me the same goes for Bobby Patterson - I'm In Love With You and Bill Brandon - Whatever I am I'm yours. The tags should be removed and if it's a good record play it, whatever it's classification.

Can I Really Be A Soul Fan
Soul music is all about emotion, if you get that from a northern dancer, thats what counts and there no need to doubt your love for soul. My personal preference is for Southern/Deep and I've never been a fan of the "100 mile an hour dancer" and some of the more "blue eyed" stuff leaves me cold, but they are still soul. It's all about petrsonal preference. "Soul" has covered a wide spectrum of output over the years and not everyone likes everything. If everybody liked everthing in equal amounts it would be a boring world and we wouldn't have the diversity of DJ playlists gthat we have. The Dave Godin CD's have opened Deep to a wider audience (thanks to Kent for that, I hope these releases have been profitable for them) as typically Deep never gets the chance to get that much airplay. The other advantage of collecting deep, is that the majority are cheap as chips. I think it would be idea to have a day dedicated to "Deep" when the "RefoSoul" reopens.

Polydor Demos An Anorak Question
An anorak question. I've been burning some mp3's tonight and I was going through some Polydor demo's. Does anyone know why Polydor had double sided demo's such as Steeplechase - Never Coming Back/Lady Bright in 1970. Then went to Single sided demo's such as Pep Brown - I'm The One Who Needs You in 1973 and back to double sided demo's such as Gaslight - Just Because Of You/It's Just Like Magic in 1975. I know they were a big company (so possibly no one will know the answer), with multiple music styles, which to me is strange as big companies always like consistency. Regards, John

Mixed Bag Of Quality 60's & 70's
Dolly, I don't know if this will help with the sale of this, but it looks like the lable is a cross between the two lables it was on. Smooth City or White Enterprise. Does anyone have a clip of "You Got The Love I Need" as I don't remember ever hearing it. "Dancing with Nancy" is pants. John
