  1. I don't get out much these days and the 80's special was good and my first do in over 10 years (the penance for having three kids and a wife who thinks its strange that men sing to each other, when a great tune is on). I loved the one just before xmas too. Although working down the road, does make it a long night beer wise and I'm not a spring chicken any more. It's a shame the next one is a couple of days before Monumental as I can only get a pass for one. At least I'm (hopefully) going to Essence, as long as Brad has reserved some passes and someone needs to hecle Mr Biggerstaff when he plays his deep set. So this may be the start of me supporting do's again. To my knowledge none of the tunes that I posted up are rare and Soul Bowl probaly still have them floating around somewhere. But I have to say if it wasnt for Bob Jones, these would probably still be unknowns to me.
  2. How come the French are bidding things up?
  3. I don't have any issues with CD's (although I still don't give them the same reverance as records) and have been grandually building up a missing 15 years of 90's/Y2k tunes, thanks to Dodger (eternally grateful, mate). But, I miss the demise of the 7"/12" (or even CD) single, (although there seems to be a revival with Grapevine, Soul Junction, etc. issues). You hear a great track and find out the rest of the CD is rubbish, and I then think about the cost of it and then wonder whether I should have bought it or should I buy it. Then again the same thing applys to LP's but I don't seem to get so blue if the rest of the LP is rubbish. I think I'm still going through a record/CD transition period. What will it be like when CD's eventually disappear and replaced with downloads?

  5. Dave, Is there any chance of some more clips, please? John
  6. Has anyone ever seen the original on "Al & The Kid" in the flesh? Surely this one has to be included in the "Rare Modern" thread of a little while ago, if it's not already there? John
  7. There were a lot of good tunes coming out in the mid 80's/early 90's, especially southern orientated output by old wailers/crooners such as Don Hollinger, Jeb Stuart, Clay Hammond, Lee "shot" Williams, etc.. Who emerged from hibernation in a post disco era. I'm confident that Bob Jones gave the majority of new releases airplay on his Horizon/Solar shows. From my perspective the majority of the London venues at that time were packing the floors with the Modulations, Earl White jr, Beloyd, Flowers, Timothy Wilson, etc... We all wanted the 70's stuff. I was engulfed with getting these tunes and probably blinkered. There was the phase of Soul Sam and his "Buds", but for me the majority of these are overrated/over priced, with the exception of the likes of Cheryl Hunter, Sir-Prize and the Hotliners. This IMO meant that new releases probably didn't get a look in, were played once or twice or dj's felt that these were floor clearers (remember what was played at the Blackpool weekenders). It's the quality releases as people have mentioned in previous posts, from around this time that will be rediscovered. The problem I'm facing with catching up (I also bought new releases at the time, but not as many as I should have) is that these records seem to fall into two categories: "Cheap as chips" or "Wow how much?". Some that float my boat at the moment are: Lee Morris - Weak Man or I Got Played on - Lee & Co (actually I like all three Lee & Co releases and his Starville release is nice too) Junei - You Must Go On - Pharaohs David Sea - Night After Night - Crown International Sonny Holly - Cheating Aint No Good - Cash Money Eric Rapier - Cant Stop Dreaming - Keynote Magnificents - You Turned Me on - DT Clay Hammond - Come Into these Arms of Love - P-Vine J J Johnson - Don't Go Away - Bud/TCC Malik - My Love - Bud/Fareel Chuck Roberson - Both Bluesong releases Chocolate Buttermilk Band - Cant Let Go - CBM Jeb Stuart - Long Time Coming Down - Esquire Lee "Shot" Williams - Every man Loves A Woman - O'ona Numonics - Forever and A Day/You Lied - Hodisk Clarence Mann - Come What May - Bama/Susie Q Eddie Cornelius - Love Making In Your Eyes - GB David Hudson - Just A Feeling - Waylo Charles Wilson - Trying to Make A Wrong Thing Right - Alley Cat Beau Williams - Give You Up - Capitol Quinn Golden - Cant Live Without You - Traction Lanier & Co - Larc LP Bobby Jonz - Win Your Love - Dispo Crosswinds - Fire - Harbor City (Roy) Galloway - Hide Away - Awe-Some StanleyWilliams - Count The Days - Hotline There were some good releases in the early 90's such as: Matilda Jones' three Justice releases, Rov've - Go by what you tell me (I was never a big fan of Ron Keith), Ernie Lee Banks still puts a smile on my Face, Prince Gideon, Waters - What's on Your mind - Waterwheel, Alfreda James - That Ain't Love - Lake Michigan Cheers, John
  8. Deorah Foster - I Cant Hold Basck the Feeling/Whip It On Me - This ones for the steppers - not bad Something Unique - Catch the Action/This Feeling Between Us - This is mid tempo - not bad as well Both 12's and I don't know if the came out on 7's also
  9. Does the breaking glass in Roy Hamilton's Crackin' up over you, count? I always love it when I hear that bit. John
  10. Sean, Completely agree and cheap as chips John

  18. Stay With Me - tavasco - rampart 13119 refosoul I looked to see if anyone had posted it up before, if any ones interested, here's the B-Side. It's a bit crackly at the beginning
  19. I've just converted "Stay with me" to an MP3 and I've realised that it's about 6 1/2 minutes long.
  20. There have been two copies up for sale on ebay in the last six months, both sold around the £120-150 mark, I should have had a go, but didn't, Silly me. I seem to remember Steve Davis playing it on the radio as well or when he was interviewed, but I may be wrong. The story of Marks find still makes me chuckle, I think theres a photo of them all looking through tunes and right on top of a pile of records is the Gregg Jackson and I think if you look carefully you can see what it is.
  21. Steve, Many thanks, I supose it's saved me some money on some potential bad blind buys. Cheers, John
  22. Can anyone tell me if there is a significant difference between the 7" and the 12" versions (is the 12" worth getting)?. I have seen a lot of late 70's tunes spoiled on 12" because of a five minute "disco dancing bit" half way through the record (4 below zero being one example). Regards, John
  23. I've been thinking about Clarence Reids Bound Sound label and appart from the tunes people generally discuss: Joey Gilmore, Frankie Gearing, David Hudson and Jessie Butler. I was wondering if other potential gems may be on the lable? I assume that OSE - Computer Funk (1003) is probably nothing to write home about, but I may be wrong. Regards, John
  24. I got this as a secret santa present from work, it's new. I've already got the hard back. Does anyone want it for £8 including postage? PM me if your interested. Regards, John
  25. What about C Coulter, I thought there wernt many of those? Glenda Mcloud, there are only three real copies that seem to have surfaced
