Which Northern Record Do You Want Played At Your Funeral?
Sadly a friend of mine passed away a few weeks ago, he was buried, on the coffin was a can of Guiness, at the side of the grave was a tape machine and as the coffin was lowered into the grave the The Jam - "Going Underground" played from the tape deck, it just added a touch of humor to a sad day.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
I have just returned from the Stoke Allnighter, I've not been since October last year, I attend Lifeline more than I do Stoke. During the night I wandered into the Windsor Suite and caught Simon Hunt's set, the room and dance floor was fairly busy and IMO he played a great set. I went back into the main room for a while the floor was packed after a while I went back into the Windsor Suite and what I heard blew me away, I didn't know the DJ's name I think he was from Dartford and his set was the one before Rob Smith approx 4am. He was probably halfway through and was playing some fantastic 100mph funky dancers, ( I had not heard them before but I can usually tell by the first few beats if they are dancable or not ) there must have only been fifteen or so people in the room and two or three of us dancing away. Whilst in the main room hundreds danced to same old, had Sam played these they would have gone down a storm, but no, they were lost on a few of us tucked away in a side room in one of the biggest nighters in the country.

What Was The Best All-Dayer
1. Manchester Ritz, we (Wayne & Jackie Bloe, Paul Hitchin, Douglas, Mac, Hilary Mee, Willie Hunt, NattyNeil, Alan Jackson to name but a few) all used to meet up in a pub called "Paddys Goose" at the side of Chorlton Street bus station for a few pints before the Ritz opened. We didn't miss many and the last one I went to was August Bank Hloiday 1979 with my ex wife who was 5 months pregant with my daughter. 2. Any others that fitted in on a sunday. 3. I can remember going to the Casino one Boxing Day alldayer to see Tommy Hunt we got the bus from Swinton (Manchester) and were eating christmas cake and washing it down with a large bottle of Martinit, (Urrgghh).

Sharon Jones At Manchester Ritz
What a fantastic night, saw loads of familiar faces, watched the show from the balcony. For over an hour she ( Sharon Jones) never stopped. Must agree with Soulfinger though there seemed a lot of people there just for a night out. A soulnight after the show would have just finished the night off:lol:

Ever Had Someone Refuse To Sell You 45's?
Ten years ago my wife and I went to Cape Cod, Massachusetts for a holiday, we were walking past this very upmarket row of shops and came across a small double fronted shop selling only cd's BUT in each window hanging below each other from nylon cord were lots of Scepter Wand singles, Chuck Jackson, The Shirelles, Dionne Warwick etc. We entered the shop and there was a youngish girl at the counter, I asked if the records in the window were for sale, she said she didn't know as she only worked there, after some persuasion I got her to phone her boss to ask if they were for sale, "No" was the answer, I offered her a $100 for them all, same answer, I called her bluff and offered $200, still the same answer "No". So we left the shop, carried on walking and came across a shop selling vinyl (rather like Robinsons records in Manchester for those who remember) covering the ceiling were hundreds of singles fastend with staples. There on the ceiling was a copy of Major Lance Monkey Time, I asked the guy behind the counter if the records were for sale he said "No but if you want any you can have them" he handed me a pair of scissors and I walked a way with the single. You win some you lose some. Peter

Torch Revival Manchester Hardrock March 1975
Never went to a "Soul Do" at the Hardrock BUT did go to see Led Zeppelin there early 70's. There was no seating and everyone was sat on the floor, whilst waiting for them to come on stage, music was playing over the PA and I can clearly remember hearing Stevie Wonders Superstition, that was one of the first tracks to get me into Soul as it was then. My ears were ringing for days what concert. Sometime later I also saw Focus (Jan Akermann, Hocus Pocus) there as well, but then there was tiered seating. Funny last summer I still had all the programmes with ticket stubbs attached and got a hefty price for them on ebay. P.S rit-tic love the Avatar badge, I have one myself in orange.
