My goodness, this is a fantastic feature. Cheers! Tune of the set for me is the Soul Junction release of Ron Shy "Don't They Know." What a gorgeous tune, and from Ellington's nephew none the less!

		News: Otis Clay R.I.P

This is sad news, it greeted me yesterday on 9th Jan by a text message from close friend Andy Martin and again a F/Bk message from Tony Rounce. I didn't believe it at first, because not sure how the rest of you on Soul Source do it but I have a crazy habit of thinking my soul heroes will live on forever. Otis like the late George Jackson , the mighty Sam Dees and the late great Terry Callier have been close friends of mine for 30 odd years of my near 50 years in black music. I've been truly blessed to not only meet these guys, but also to spend quality time in their company away from the spotlight and recording business. Otis I met in the UK when interviewing him for Black Echoes and he was such a 'special, gentle spirit' totally respectful of my roots and upbringing as I of his music and career. We swapped stories and music and after about an hour I felt I had known him all my life. His talent was monumental, his phasing and delivery of ballads quite overpowering to the listener and yes the real soul scene worldwide will a sad place without his might southern vocals that brings a smile to our faces. He that that special gift of putting pure emotion into those vinyl grooves. My sincere thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time. R.I.P. big man I can honestly say the soul world just won't be the same without you. And thank you so much for your music legacy which will definitely go on forever.

News: Staple Singers Box Set - Faith & Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976

You were lucky to get it at £14.77!, that's incredibly good value. As you say Amazon are still £43.66 and It's back in a JUNO at £37.99 [Jan 2016], which upon searching around seems the average price. I still want this box set but somewhat hesitant that I might get faulty disc(s) again.

News: Express Your Soul - Mixed by Levanna McLean

My daughter (aged seventeen) bought this for me as a Xmas Tree present. Poor girl has had soul/R&B (old style) and blues thrust at her from a baby. Her older sister left home last year to escape Womack, Curtis, Etta, Temps and their ilk. I asked my daughter why she chose it and was informed she thought Levanna was great and that the music was right up my street which, with a few reservations it is. If the music is going to survive as a living entity it has to become part of the younger generation's cultural experience. Levanna and others can help. The new cuts were excellent particularly New Street Adventure's 'The Big AC'.

News: Staple Singers Box Set - Faith & Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976

Mine plays OK, only thing I was miffed at, I paid Amazon £43.99 pre-order price which never dropped, on release I was checking the price & 2 of the Amazon Marketplace traders were selling it at £14.77 + £1.26 postage. Furthermore I now see the price is £36.99, moral I won't be pre-ordering in future. PS of course I had to buy one of the sets for £14.77, as I can't resist a bargain.

Just to say I've had 2 sets of these comp and they both have playing faults on CDs 2 & 3, which from my experience will not play the last track on each of those CDs. I believe it is a manufacturing fault. Gutted as The Staples are one of my favs and was really looking forward to having this in my collection. So be warned when you purchase this item.

News: Tardam Records - Label dedicated to Soul and R&B dancefloor tunes

Great "New" versions of 2 Ns &1 Rand B tunes : "Cum,in" {too many ,,,,1} is readily available on Cd reissue and Bootees, Southwind Symphony Instrois played ,recently Lee Jeffries AndMatt Early did a similarly competant note for note cover as this New Tardam release on their Sonic Wax {did it sell or set the scene on fire? }, The adorable Ian levine got critcized for covering the Greats in his early days, but he did try and bring something new to the party! When money is too tight too mention, and your market is a scene obsessed with OVO and originality ,Why ? Lol Johnny Hart

That Com'un Home version is great. Gotta admit I was a little 'hmm…' at first (we've all heard the original and it's a tough act to follow), but the female vocals/perspective really adds a lot to it I think. Gonna pick it up for sure.
