Mixed Emotions On Cole
I don't know how this record is so rare that nobody knew about it until Sebastian sold it on ebay but I just got a copy (sold by the family) and it definitely is an old press (and it had some light vinyl wear that could only have been from an old record), I have no doubt it's from the 1977 that the phono copyright on the label indicates. They must have circulated it even less than the original. I know people were talking about how they dislike the "gold" side but the "down and out" is the good side IMO. I haven't done side-by-side comparison yet, but I think this record is identical to the gold label record they just pressed with "gold of my life (reprise)" and "down and out" on the flip. This raises the other question -- was the blue label 45 that that has that "am I imposing" side originally pressed back in the day on a not-yet-discovered 45? it would be crazy to see that.

thanks for clarifying

it's only coincidental in the sense that the frederick hymes record is from las vegas.

All of the living Yodi people, including Dauphine Williams, have been talked to by the numero group people who did the CD reissue. You can buy the CD and it has extensive liner notes.

The only evidence against this is that copy with the lu-bet publishing stamp. The fact that the plates have been reused is evidence for this though... unless someone involved comes out with the story, it'll stay unresolved as to what happened.

I think it's interesting that facts are missing, made up, etc. and (in other cases), people might be paying lots of money for a later press thinking it's the first. Who will know for sure? What happens in cases where the "facts" were wrong and the thought-to-be-later press turns out to be the first? I think at this point it wouldn't affect the value of the yellow copy much because so many have been sold at that value and they're pretty much out of print. What's also interesting is established knowledge getting lost. For example, there is a very rare sweet soul / funk 45 by the rappers on roach out of LA. In the 90s the label owner repressed it with the original labels, but the vinyl was obviously later 80s-style vinyl with the big ridged, rounded edge, etc. People have been selling the reissue without mentioning (or even knowing) that it's a 90s press and it has become like a $200 record. Originals are very rare... but I got one for $150 on ebay recently mint because the people who would currently want it probably already paid $200+ for a reissue that they didn't know was a reissue. someone should print up membership cards

yeah, I guess one thing that would be weird if it was a second run from 1973 or whenever is that the vinyl should be the same. The paper also looks funny on the yellowish ones. I don't know if this will ever be resolved because there is evidence both ways.

some people are just delusional in ways that act against them actually making money. greed contributes to the delusion.

Kev, you're not saying that JR Bailey (of the Cadillacs btw) is the "Show and tell" and "The Snake" Al Wilson right? Because that's just not true, Al Wilson died in 2008. JR Bailey died in 2000. Are you saying he's maybe the Wand artist?

I don't know about the stamp but there was a record label Lu-Bet that released two 45s by the LA group the Explosions (same group as on Highland and the Xplosions on Funk City). It has to be the same company I guess. Reusing the same plates much later is not common. Plates get worn out and if anyone has been to a label owner's house where s/he actually has old plates, they're all bent up and usuable. They are not stiff / rigid. I do think the same plates makes it more likely it was a run at the time.

Thanks. I knew they were different, just wanted to clarify what I thought you were saying. Thanks a lot.

Steve, I missed this, are you implying that the Leaders "rat race" are the same group on volt? I'm pretty sure that's not true. The Volt group is a later version of the Moments on Hog. Their volt records were produced by Bert Keyes and Myrna March for Volt. The Moments/Leaders group had pretty much no connection to Memphis.

This one has to be an original, it has a publisher stamped on: https://www.popsike.com/Soul-45-FREDERICK-HYMES-III-Time-Aint-FAB-VEGAS-4526/370244166857.html (I thought Lu-Bet was LA before, interesting that it is vegas). Whether this is the same (I always thought they were the same) is the question. However, comparing the orange popsike copies with the yellow ones does make them look different. The paper on the yellower ones looks thinner and less glossy. *HOWEVER*, even if there are two presses, you really don't know if it was pressed around the same time the original came out versus now. The fact that they used the original plates is more evidence that it was just a second run at the same time. So "second pressing" doesn't necessarily mean "modern reissue".

It depends on what the poly lining is made out of, but I don't want to risk it so I get rid of them when I get one.

Sorry I was not clear. The group's first 2 45s are on Volt. The record is this: Volt 4049 - Newcomers - Still A Boy In My Heart / You Put The Sunshine Back

unrelated to the records discussed above, a totally impossible to find volt record with the stock b-side is the second newcomers record. i looked for years and it's not like it was on anyone's radar. finally got one for $10 in a craig moerer auction... b-side was decent too.

Just to clarify, the memphis nomads 45 (which is an uncredited cover of the manhattans) isn't that rare, the "vanity" was just the thing about it being done for some charity on the label. I don't know why the melvin van peebles 45 from the LP is "vanity" -- there were a lot more weird and random artists on the label in the 70s. Same with motown.
