  1. also, sorry for ruining your thread
  2. yeah, this is an example of what I was talking about before actually. I have the sock-it release and have been playing it forever. But I don't really have influence over what takes off in the scene, there is some sort of dynamic between DJs, dancers, collectors, etc. that makes stuff take off or not. I kept losing the 77 release for like $50 on ebay (I was just bidding to collect it on the other label). Then it shot up and now I can't get it for close to that. I bought one off sales on here recently but I traded it for another record I needed since I already had it on sock it.
  3. I think the harmonics on sock it / seventy seven is slowly picking up now, at least from the sales I've seen.
  4. I actually was going to post this but couldn't find a youtube clip of it. p.s. I seem to be very good at killing soul source threads for some reason
  5. does nobody have a sense of humor here? i apologize for posting non-recommendations in this thread. here is a recommendation in the spirit of this thread:
  6. also, that sugar boy and shades of black record is nice, i heard a clip of it once before but never heard enough of it to get into it. one more thing on my wants list.
  7. You should have a sense of humor about it, I know a bunch of cases in the thread where people are posting records they recently got, which they are excited about (often because they are good). Of course they also want it to go up in value. That doesn't mean they will though. Like many other collectors I have unknown, good records, often ones that became "in demand" many years after I got them... even if I played them on my radio show. I have no idea what will break in 2012. I'm not part of "the scene" so I don't know or control which records will become popular in 2012. I guess a lot of sweet soul people listen to my radio show so I have a tiny but of control over that but not much. If you look at the past years thread it's always similar, the only ones that people post that break in that year are the ones that are already starting to break when the thread starts..The records that actually become popular seem to be driven by specific DJs playing them, not by how good they are. There are thousands of good, unknown records, so I'm not sure which ones you would want me to list. I'm not saying this thread shouldn't exist, people are posting good obscure records they like which is great. People are enjoying themselves. Just making a comment that they're mostly unlikely to break in 2012.
  8. this thread should be titled: "Name a record you recently got that you hope will go up in value in 2012"
  9. thanks a lot. I watch trashy TV but I don't drink. I already help out the numero group on a lot of stuff. Thanks.
  10. plus i should also win most obnoxious poster
  11. another totally random connection I have with a person is that Eli "paperboy" Reed went to the University of Chicago for a year and started doing a southern soul show after me. I took him around the city to different record shows, thrift stores, etc. He then dropped out of school to focus on his music. Sort of random that I knew him before his recording career.
  12. Thanks everyone. It is interesting to hear how younger people get into soul music. As in the story, much of my generation got into it through hip hop and sampling. I know there is a whole new wave of young California collectors getting into the music through the sweet soul collector scene over there. And there are more soul nights in other cities in the US than ever before, but I'm not sure why -- maybe because it's such a "hip" and different sound from anything else. I think that these soul nights probably inspire even more people to collect the music. A few years ago I was saying that the music would die as the collectors got older (which is sort of what happened to the doowop scene) but it's great that new blood is coming into collecting to keep it alive.
  13. sad news. in addition to his early work with the o'jays, i really liked "this i beg of you" on samar
  14. they put on a great show, definitely worth seeing
  15. yeah, awesome article, thanks so much for posting
  16. Hi Jordi, I think you're confused. The differences 5 minutes is not from chicago, are you thinking of Clifton Dyson who was in the differences?
  17. I always appreciate anyone taking the time to document some piece of the music, thanks for your work on this.
  18. Legendary Chicago soul producer Clarence Johnson died yesterday. He was responsible for a ton of records that helped define the Chicago Sound, especially in the early 70s. The biggest hit he ever had was Love Jones by the Brighter Side of Darkness but he produced a ton of great records by artists such as the Lovelites, Heaven and Earth, Coffee, Denice Chandler, the Ledgends, etc. added by site further reading links google books - Chicago Soul By Robert Pruter http://books.google....epage&q&f=false a Jan 2000 article http://reynaldo82.co...s-01-28-00.html
  19. the best part of this article is their (intentional? accidental?) use of the word "renumerated" instead of "remunerated".
  20. very interesting info about the perfections and 21st right at the end...
  21. I don't know about this specific tour, but their current lineup should be the same as the previous UK lineup -- sam, fred, and reggie torian, who was the lead singer for the longest time in the 70s (and previously in the enchanters on golden ear). super nice guy.
