  1. But the problem I have with that is it becomes more of "disco / pop" night than a rare soul scene.
  2. Bit of a chicken and egg situation imo. To play new releases to the younger element they have to attend in the first place. And if they are there then it's probably because they have discovered the music already. And don't necessarily want to hear anything that is played in the local night club.

75p initially from memory. Normally went up when there were acts on as well.
  4. Another red issue here.. https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LARRY-CLINTON-Shes-Wanted-Three-States-Northern-7-/170483531231?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Records&hash=item27b19c3ddf

Agree with JJ and all the other comments. The trailer looks far more 'polished' and professional. Hope it makes it to a cinema near me.
  6. Think we were both driving mate.
  7. As i think we discussed Paul.
  8. "What's your take on rare soul?" Just an extension of the original ethos of the early clubs where everything was played with no preconceptions and no rule book. You travelled to hear tunes you would not hear else where. Sad that this original philosophy has declined imho.
  9. And just for you Marge. GWEN OWENS - JUST SAY YOU'RE WANTED -
  10. Like most things easy when you know how
  11. Here you go Billy. POPCORN WYLIE - ROSEMARY WHAT HAPPENED - KAREN -
  12. The girly backing vocals counteracting Dons voice. The tempo changes. As close to Northern soul perfection as you can get. Until I change my mind again next week. DON VARNER - TEAR STAINED FACE -
  13. And if it wasn't for people attending venues, whatever there personal preference is for format and policy, we wouldn't be having this discussion. There would be no scene.
  14. Nice post Chalky. Exactly as we discussed last night. I've got no answers either. I try and choose what events I go to with as much thought as I can. DJ line up, music policy, cost, distance etc , as I'm sure most others do as well. But when you have so many events on every weekend it's inevitable that the numbers attending each one will be diluted. I don't necessarily agree it's too late though. But it does need promoters especially to work together. Whats the point having 2 events of a similar nature within a few miles of each other on the same night. Surely a joint promotion would be beneficial for everyone, promoters and attendees alike. I suspect this issue will never go away but its still a shame.
  15. Totally understand where you are coming from. But the cost for a couple at ANY weekender is huge. Probably blows the disposable income for a month. Just my opinion, and has already been mentioned, but cost and too many other events is diluting the scene. I try to make the 100 as often as I can. But this year so far has been impossible. Jan - the weather killed it. Feb - Rugby anniversary, 40 mins up the road or an expensive trip to London - no brainer for me. March - I was working on the Sunday at 6.00 am so just not possible. April last week I had every intention of attending but was sick as a dog. May - Have already arranged with Eddie (Hubbard) that we will be there. Thats assuming we will be able to get in now. So basically half the year will have gone and for various reasons I will have only been there once. I've got no real answers to help out but better promotion can only be beneficial. And in the current climate bi - monthly could be a better option. As the economic situation improves this could always be altered. Best Tabs

First time I've seen that pic. Have you any more? The Andantes, yet more truly talented individuals who never got the recognition they deserved. On an equal par with the Funk Brothers imo.

Agree with the sentiments of yourself and Eddie. Mike Terry's omission is nothing short of scandalous. Plenty of literature available from people who were there about how Motown worked. Just finished reading Motown - From the Background. Heart warming and heart breaking in equal measure. Recommended if you want an insight to what really went on.
  19. 2 that spring to mind Debbie And The Lads - Dear Lord Above Kenni Smith - Lord Whets happening

  24. Best room of the night for me. Spent the last 4 hours in there and the people who were in attendance were having a great time. Really enjoyed it, far better than the unimaginative oldies that were being played whenever i went into the main room. All about opinions and tastes so i'm not saying I'm right or wrong. Just my opinion that I like to hear something different, underplayed or unknown.
  25. No it's not just you Simon. IMO the niter scene offers so much more than a soul nite. There are of course some exceptions. However the vibrancy, variety of sounds and atmosphere of an upfront niter definitely has a positive effect on the attendees. Thats my two penny worth.
