An excellent analogy, which if you take to it's logical conclusion would mean we'd all hate the Supremes now because they'd have committed the hanus crime of being a success on the NS scene, ergo - the exception which proves our own rule..... Heard 'The Present' played out a few months ago - REALY enjoyed hearing it again. Always quite liked 'The Night' from my 'yoofy' days - and still a much better track than FW in IMHO....... seem to recall reading (or hearing) that FV always hated this track and never wanted it released.

Sorry Mr Vickers, I've re-read all the other posts and now understand that to 'Contribute anything positive' to your thread I need to slag off a load of 50 year olds and their fashion, sadly however I wont be throwing any of your Buns at peoples baggies so I'll 'go & spoil someone eles thread' as you interestingly put it!.

'Northern Soul' means whatever you wan't it to mean...... To some, it's that elusive and never ending search for a rare track or piece of Vinyl - to others it's an enjoyable night out once a month with a few freinds...... and no more!. I've never seen any pre-set rules about joining this 'Northern Soul' scene, so who are we to decide what peoples level of involvement should be, or how They choose to enjoy Their Soul music.

This (or a similar) type thread was posted a few years ago and the general concensus was as most have posted on this thread, ie it's pretty comical....... which I agreed with, however..... If people want to waste their cash on NS dance lessons then thats their choice, you can now get lessons in just about every other type and style of dance - so why not northern?......the scene has long since stopped being 'Underground' (the internet and a disposable income put a stop to that) so taking money off people for dance lessons is little different than all the other ways 'todays' scene has found to relieve people of their 'hard earned'...... ........ and lets be honest, I'm sure we all know somebody who could benefit from a few lessons....

TBH, whenever the 'W' word is mentioned on this forum it just seems to solicite the usual stereotype comments of 'Baggies, Frank Wilson and Hawai 5-0', many on here just see the 'W' word as a point scoring exercise to try in some way to show they're 'superior' and have 'Moved on'....... There are countless 'local' type venus on every fri/sat nite that are never advertised on this forum, many attended by people who used to be regulars of these big 70's venues and may still have lots of pic's etc from those days, because however most of these people arn't DJ's or collectors of Rare Vinyl, they'll have little or no interst in this forum... Perhaps some kind of flyer at these venues directing people to this forum/a website could bring up some otherwise unseen/unknown stuff.

Agreed!...... I don't subscribe to all these "Wigan went crap after....*insert relevent excuse*", what were bad years for some people were great for others, Station Rd had a 8 year run which is pretty good by any standards, ie how many other venues even came close to this level of attendance and longevity...... it must have been doing something right!. It's just a case of the typical 'British disease' with these things, ie we love to knock anything thats a success.

I'll more than agree with your agreement, however many of these tracks were happily played before and after at other venues yet you'd think Wigan invented all of them reading some of the stuff posted on here. It seems a popular point scoring exercise with some on this board that as soon as anyone mentions the 'W' word you have to immediately pounce and state "Wigan went crap after Footsee, This England, Casino Classics, Mod invasion" (insert relevent excuse). Yes!, there were some crap tracks played, but these were a few small flies in a very large jar of fantastic ointment - just because you continued to go to Wigan after 77 it doesn't mean you're some kind of knuckle dragging neanderthal who only went to Station Rd to dress up in comedy trousers and worship at the alter of Frank Wilson.

Agreed, it's all to easy to look back with hindsight and slag off these type tracks (which seems a popular passtime on this board) yet love them or loath them, they were part of the scene - and lets remember Wigan had no monopoly on crap records - it just makes an easier target, sadly.
