Hang on a second .... that's a bit below the belt isn't it? Craig Charles is clearly a bit of a bad boy, but his show is consistently good, and he has interviews on his show too... He had a fantastic three part series interviewing James Brown, which he did brilliantly. This year alone, he has had interviews with the Average White Band, Cymande, Marlena Shaw, Ian Wright, Gwen Macrae, Mavis Staples, Cyril Neville, Isaac Hayes, Tito Lopez, George Clinton, Keb Darge, and Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. He certainly isn't a chin stroker though. Actually, I reckon this is a conspiracy by people who are doing NS events on News Years Eve to make sure we aren't drawn into the trap of listening to the radio instead!

Too right! You can play anything, whether you have it on original label or not. You can even ignore the soul police on this one occasion. You might choose to start with something that was actually a hit - I'd suggest "Dancing in the Street", not least because it is Craig Charles related!

Craig Charles show on Radio 6 is one of the best music shows on the BBC at the moment, so what better to put on at 1am on News Years Day. I don't suppose he'll be trying to break any new discoveries though. So, my question to all you top DJs out there is what would your first three be if you had the chance to do Craig's show for him? Remember, there are about 50,000 parties tuning in to your show so they can all have a bit of a dance. In every one of them there are a couple of people bragging to their mates that they "used to go to Wigan" and going on about a record they used to have that's now worth "at least a grand". Is it the ultimate chance to put all those divvies in their places, or do you go for three ultimate crowd pleasers and your one chance in a lifetime to put a million people on their feet, moving to the tune you chose?

I think it is essential if we are going to keep the rare soul scene going that we start getting new people into soul in general. The most accessible music back then is still a great place to start & there are lots of people who have hardly heard any soul at all. Just look at how popular the KFC ads (& the LEvis ads going back a few years) are. One of the down sides of the rare soul world is the "you can't play that - it was a hit" rule. Great dancefloor soul is what it is all about to me & if that means mixing Chain of Fools, Move On Up, Roadrunner and the like into a set than I think that's great! That's what I do (when I get the chance) - so if you're looking for DJs for such a night, I am definitely up for it!
