  1. If you look at his signature, you will notice that he's doing something else on New Years Eve!
  2. Hang on a second .... that's a bit below the belt isn't it? Craig Charles is clearly a bit of a bad boy, but his show is consistently good, and he has interviews on his show too... He had a fantastic three part series interviewing James Brown, which he did brilliantly. This year alone, he has had interviews with the Average White Band, Cymande, Marlena Shaw, Ian Wright, Gwen Macrae, Mavis Staples, Cyril Neville, Isaac Hayes, Tito Lopez, George Clinton, Keb Darge, and Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. He certainly isn't a chin stroker though. Actually, I reckon this is a conspiracy by people who are doing NS events on News Years Eve to make sure we aren't drawn into the trap of listening to the radio instead!
  3. Too right! You can play anything, whether you have it on original label or not. You can even ignore the soul police on this one occasion. You might choose to start with something that was actually a hit - I'd suggest "Dancing in the Street", not least because it is Craig Charles related!
  4. Craig Charles show on Radio 6 is one of the best music shows on the BBC at the moment, so what better to put on at 1am on News Years Day. I don't suppose he'll be trying to break any new discoveries though. So, my question to all you top DJs out there is what would your first three be if you had the chance to do Craig's show for him? Remember, there are about 50,000 parties tuning in to your show so they can all have a bit of a dance. In every one of them there are a couple of people bragging to their mates that they "used to go to Wigan" and going on about a record they used to have that's now worth "at least a grand". Is it the ultimate chance to put all those divvies in their places, or do you go for three ultimate crowd pleasers and your one chance in a lifetime to put a million people on their feet, moving to the tune you chose?
  5. Thanks! I just needed to be a bit more patient, clearly! I've been looking for a while and no copies have been coming up, and every day I don't have this record the pain just gets a little deeper ...
  6. Anyone got one for sale? Condition not important so long as it plays VG+. Thanks Simon
  7. Uplook is the earlier release & Mr Manship has a copy on his website for £75. Abbott is worth £50ish I believe. There's another good one on Abbott by the Village Soul Choir - The Cat Walk - Abbott 2010
  8. Loads of information on Mr Quezergue on the excellent "Home of the Groove" Blog on all things New Orleans - https://homeofthegroove.blogspot.com/search?q=quezergue.
  9. See here (with the Dave Barker track on the other side): https://www.juno.co.uk/products/223926-01.htm Sampled on the Massive Attack song of the same name on Mezzanine (includes Horace Andy vocals)
  10. This is taken from the BGP reissue (its got "What A Man" by Linda Lyndell on the other side). Top tune. hawkes_losing.mp3 lyndell_man.mp3
  11. Four Tops - I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind - ABC Dunhill 13698 refosoul Just for completeness sake!
  12. I think it is essential if we are going to keep the rare soul scene going that we start getting new people into soul in general. The most accessible music back then is still a great place to start & there are lots of people who have hardly heard any soul at all. Just look at how popular the KFC ads (& the LEvis ads going back a few years) are. One of the down sides of the rare soul world is the "you can't play that - it was a hit" rule. Great dancefloor soul is what it is all about to me & if that means mixing Chain of Fools, Move On Up, Roadrunner and the like into a set than I think that's great! That's what I do (when I get the chance) - so if you're looking for DJs for such a night, I am definitely up for it!
  13. :fool: Oops - I was looking at my 67 re-release. Thanks bongolia.
  14. Thanks for suggestions so far - I've edited a few in straight away - anything after about 1985 I'll have to lsiten to as I have hardly listened to new music for the last 20 years!
  15. I've been asked to DJ at a (non-NS) friend's birthday party & am thinking of doing a 50 floorfillers from 50 years type set. I want to do it all off original (US or UK) vinyl (maybe the more recent stuff from CD) & I have a fair collection of 60s 70s 80s all genres. Unlike some people on here, I don't have £1,000s to spare! I'm not spending more than a fiver per item & ideally it will all either already be in my collection or will be available at a boot sale or charity shop. So ....... this is what I have so far - suggestions please!! 1957 Reet Petite - Jackie Wilson 1958 Tears On My Pillow - Little Anthony & The Imperials 1959 C'mon Everybody - Eddie Cochrane 1960 Stay - Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs 1961 Blue Moon - Marcells 1962 Green Onions - Booker T & the MGs 1963 Can I Get A Witness - Marvin Gaye 1964 My Girl - The Temptations 1965 Roadrunner - Jr Walker & The Allstars 1966 This Old Heart of Mine - Isley Brothers 1967 Shake (live) - Otis Redding 1968 Dance to the Music - Sly & the Family Stone 1969 Higher and Higher - Jackie Wilson 1970 Band Of Gold - Freda Payne 1971 Theme From Shaft - Isaac Hayes 1972 Get On The Good Foot - James Brown .. or .. 18. Detroit Green Light Bus Stop - funky si - disco explosion 15727 refosoul Just to give a few ideas for such a theme (usual mixture of sacred & profane - purists may wish to avert their gaze)
  19. Can we have a transport-related theme please? Songs about trains, cars, boats, planes etc? I think it would be good fun for a Friday & I promise to post lots of tunes ....
  20. The Truth Shall Make You Free - king hannibal - aware 15691 refosoul Rev James T Shaw quoting the Gospel of St John (8:32) - pity he couldn't follow his own advice! He's still alive & kicking though - see this https://georgiasoul.blogspot.com/2007/01/mi...-return-to.html
  21. Funky Virginia is OK - it's got some pretty awful lyrics! "Have you ever been to hip Virginia where the people are gay?" There's another Sir Guy on DPG (DPG 102) "Let Home Cross Your Mind Pt1" & "I Need You Baby" - which is, in my opinion, better. Don't know what either is worth.
  22. I've Been Watching You - southside movement - wand 15627 refosoul
  23. Hot Pants Break Down - the soul toronadoes - magic city 15487 refosoul The greatest thing ever to come out of Akron, Ohio? In my youth, I'd have said Devo - Are We Not Men? Now I'd say its this ....
