Tower Of Power
...and "Bittersweet Soul Music" (sung by Michael Jeffries) is one of their best ballads, an amazing tune methinks. It´s from their 1978 LP We Came To Play, later reissued as a CD. Cheers M

Tower Of Power
Urban Renewal album should be fairly easy to find - on vinyl as well as cd - and a cheapie. I saw (and heard!) TOP live 3-4 years ago. Great concert. They´re so amazingly tight, funky and soulful. Always interesting to see who the current lead singer is. There´s been a long string of lead singers since the group started, Lenny Williams probably my favourite. Don´t remember the name of their latest recruit, but he is a competent enough vocalist. Best, Melismo

Western Union
I´ve used Western Union before, for sending as well as receiving money, and it works a treat. The one who is sending money has to provide you with a code. You go to a Western Union outlet (around where I live there are in particular many kiosks and small shops to choose from - there´s a list on the Internet), you supply the code, show your id (such as a driver´s license), and you get the money in cash. If the sender hasn´t made any mistakes you get the exact sum of money that you´d expected. The only thing is that if you don´t know the customer, of course you must ask them to pay before you can actually post the record... Hope this helps Melismo

The History Of Soul In Four Hours
Hi Tommy! Interesting task you have before you. I have given this kind of lecture a number of times. Hard to sum it up in a Soul-Source post, but of course things like these ought to be touched upon: slave-trade, Africa-America, religion, Baptist movement, negro-spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz, rhythm & blues, Mahalia Jackson, 50´s, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, 60´s, Black Power Movement, Martin Luther King, Stax, Motown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Curtis Mayfield, Atlantic, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Funk, 70´s, Al Green, Philly Soul, Lavish orchestration, O´Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Disco, Synthesizers, Drum machines, 80´s crooners, bedroom soul Luther Vandross, Soul II Soul, UK, house, garage, techno, hip-hop, new jack swing, Guy, R. Kelly, Mary J. Blige, urban r´n´b, blue-eyed soul, nu soul, D´Angelo. As you may know the term soul was first used in jazz music, to describe a form of black jazz meant to contrast with the white cool jazz. The instrumentalist played his instrument in a way reminiscent of the typical melismatic wailing of a black gospel singer. Northern Soul may be brought up in connection with Motown. Some (evil?!) people say that lots of Northern soul are Motown-sounding records done by artists not very well known to the general public, well... The bit about Northern soul/rare soul can also be taken as a separate part altogether, as its focus is more on what the UK audience did, labelling/categorizing soul music into Northern, Crossover, Modern, and UK punters paying large sums of money for records that noone in the US had ever paid any attention to before... Please feel free to contact me if you need further advice. Good luck! All the best Melismo

Love&happiness Volume 1
Hi! If this is the same file that was posted on another forum just recently, it is an Ogg Vorbis file, which means that it is a format which is supposed to provide a sound quality superior to Mp3. However, I cannot open/play the file. Doesn´t work with the Windows Media Player, and I´ve tried my Nero Player, but unable to read the file. Any advice what player/program is needed to open this file please?! Cheers Melismo

Unifics
I guess it´s still a cheapie, easy to find with many copies floating about. A nice album. Vocally Al Johnson has changed a lot. What I mean is that fans of Al Johnson´s modern soul recordings, may not recognize his vocals on these early Unifics tracks. I guess he developed his singing skills and his personal style over the years, just like for instance Leroy Burgess did - it´s very difficult to hear the typical Burgess-esque sound on the first Black Ivory album. Cheers Melismo

Roxbury Label
Sorry don´t have a complete discography, but I agree there were many interesting releases on that label. Will Ferrell formed Chelsea Records and the subsidiary label Roxbury in the early 70´s, both labels folded after only a few years, in 1976. Farrell sadly passed in 1996. Most of the stuff put out by Ferrell on the Chelsea and Roxbury labels were picked up from other producers, mastertapes from external sources, not many self-made productions. Some of the artists recording for the Roxbury label: Dee Clark, Jean Knight, William DeVaughn, Jim Gilstrap, Big Dee Irwin, Ujima, The Honeybees, Rick Springfield, Marion Jarvis, Fessor Funk & His Queens 8th Street Funk Band, Interstate 95, Curly Moore, Chuck Higgins, Glen Burton Experience, Jack Stack, Slim & Funky Four, Sister Gail Anderson, Ronnie Williams, Linda Carr, Paul Karas, Thomas Harris, Alex Brown, Rick Mango, Funkhouse Express, + VA-LP The Bitter End Years, or Live At The Bitter End featuring Carly Simon, Arlo Guthrie, Jerry Jeff Walker, Van Morrision, Curtis Mayfield, Melanie, Bette Midler, James Taylor, John Sebastion, Isley Brothers, John Denver. Lots of brilliant stuff also on Chelsea, for instance albums by the New York City, Charles Brimmer etc. Will have to dig out some of them now. Best, Melismo

Grey And Hanks
Grey & Hanks worked together as songwriters over a long period of time, penning great songs for the likes of Jerry Butler, LTD and Millie Jackson. As a performing/recording duo they were only active for a couple of years releasing two albums as Grey & Hanks. Both LPs really nice methinks. There were a couple of Top 10 R&B hits on their first album. They recorded a mix of disco/boogie and soul, nice vocals throughout. I bought these albums at a time when they were cheap as chips, and I guess they are still quite cheap, but these days I don´t see them as often as I used to. Best, Melismo

Vintage Soul Radio Show 21st October 2007 # 225
Cheers for posting Barry! Quality tuneage - as expected. Please post a reminder every week, time permitting that is, so that we do not miss any of the shows. I have the Tribe track on an LP called Ethnic Stew. Mine is a sealed copy. Guess I should open it now, since it seems to include more soulful music than I had thought. Best, Melismo

Jocelyn Brown Track
Cheers Ian! I guess it would very difficult to put together a "Best Of Jocelyn Brown" album, because she´s been featured on so many different tracks, with different acts and on different labels. Best, Melismo

Black Ice [who Is The Vocalist?]
Actually I now remember that I have 2 LPs by Black Ice. Apart from I Judge The Funk, I also have the LP that includes the wonderful "Blind Over You" that you mentioned. The 45 I have is much more recent and sounds a lot more modern but it´s a quality soul tune with great vocals.

David Peaston - God Bless The Child
Yes, Fontella Bass is David Peaston´s older sister. And their mother is Martha Bass of The Clara Ward Singers! The three of them recorded a gospel album together in the early 90´s. I think Introducing is a wonderful album. It´s a mystery how such a talented artist only got to make two solo albums. Cheers, Melismo

Black Ice [who Is The Vocalist?]
As regards "Postcard Love Affair". The album is mainly a funk album, (called I Judge The Funk and a cheapie), however, apart from aforementioned track it also includes another amazing soul ballad title escapes me now, but it´s a great tune. I have this LP and I also have a very soulful 45 that they did several years later on another label. At work now, that´s why I can´t check the details.

Jocelyn Brown Track
I have this album, and the one they did before that, so if you have any further questions about them... BTW, does Jocelyn Brown still live in the UK, or she´s back in the states now?
