Are You One?
I don't have a problem been in the minority & really I think me & the smaller crowd of my ilk are keeping the faith (not a massive fan of the saying) more then most but what I've been trying to say all be it not very well is I now don't fit into the perceived view of "northern soul" The fact that the general perception by most isn't right I can't do anything about,so I'll just jolly along doing what I do & let the majority get on with what they are doing Cheers Martyn

After Wigan?
Jim Great call Derek is a must to be talked to,still see him from time to time & he's an encyclopedia of info with a lot of it written down on scraps of paper, lists from the year dot, photos etc. Knowing I was from Hull he gave a record that that was made of the speeches from the opening of the Humber Bridge.......picture sleeve of course Cheers Martyn

Are You One?
Jaco I'm one of the dissenters & I think you make some great points, some are correct for me some aren't.My comments weren't made lightly & aren't just a grumpy owld git's moan(like most of my comments on here are ).I desperately want to feel I belong & have tried to hang on as long as possible but as the things I've taken for granted about the "northern scene" forever seem not to matter these days or even worse frowned upon or ridiculed.I feel as if I have very little in common with the majority of the "northern scene" so by definition doesn't that make me something else???I'm sad I even feel that way & take no pleasure in my comments but that's how I see things these days. I'll still be out most weekends doing what I do........I'll just have to think of a new name for what I am(no suggestions you lot ),just what the scene needs another "Pigeon-hole" Cheers Martyn

Are You One?
Up to quite recently I would have shouted it from the rooftops proudly but I think of late what the majority think "northern soul" is/means & what I think it is/means are becoming two very different things. Not saying I'm right, maybe I'm a dinosaur still wanting to hear new music like it's always been?So as I'm in the minority maybe I'm something else now????

Wigan Casino - The Movie
Daz Plenty of fair points & a lot of those things ring true for me but as Paul says no such thing as a "Definitive Film" as everyone's journey is different, things in the film didn't happened to me but I took it as part of the film not a documentary. In the your film you've outlined you wanted I could do the same so from my point of view yours wouldn't be "Definative Film" for me. How would you weave all these relevant threads together that were missed & still make a film that isn't hours long & costs a fortune, how would you deal with disturbers who don't want to show your film. I don't know but I would think the actual filming was probably the easy bit,all the other external things I would have thought is the hard job?? Cheers Martyn

Too Much Choice?
Great point,my take on that is.........it should be played on"Original Format" so if something originally came out on CD I have no problem with it been played on that?I also wouldn't have a problem if someone had a carver done of a CD track(they owned) to play out as not all systems have CD players, same as I've had done with some LP tracks save lugging my LP's about.Must admit not come across anything that is download only yet but I'm sure in the future that will happen so wouldn't have a problem with that either. Cheers Martyn

Fallout
I think there probably is a little bit of that happening as when adverts have used northern tunes you hear them out more & the price spikes for a little while. But boots have been making some strange prices for ages now so it can't all be laid at the film's door? Cheers Martyn

Too Much Choice?
I wish more people would realise that collecting originals doesn't mean you've got to be a millionaire,in fact there's thousands of great originals out there that will cost you less then a boot.IMO having big hitters aren't a prerequisite for a great spot but a feel for the dancefloor,an imagination & putting the hard yards in to gain the knowledge that will help make you be a better dj are. Dave That's a very valid point, others have also pointed out other important parts of the experience were not covered or glossed over. But thinking about it doing a film to cover all those very complex intertwined threads that make up the nighter scene of that time along with financial & length of film constraints I think is nigh on impossible. That's why I think there could easily be another film to cover some of those things that were missed in the first one..........I mean it was left open perfectly for him to go to the US record hunting? Talking to my mates wife who didn't go to Wigan & she only got into northern when she married her husband, found the second half of the film a little harrowing,I think the reality of what went on was a bit of a shock to her.She wasn't criticizing the film I just think the subject matter & how graphic it was took her by surprise & not a very nice surprise at that,I think her naivety has been dented. Cheers Martyn

Byrney I keep banging on to my mates that some of those old boys who used to frighten you to death with just a look should come out of retirement & attend a few of these sanitised, squeaky clean, posh night's where all the expensive designer clothes,jewellery,£200 handbags are on show. They wouldn't believe what they were seeing & make a fortune in double quick time,I think that would cull a few of those who think it was a "nice" scene Cheers Martyn

Too Much Choice?
Swifty/Carl As I've said hundreds of times most would be happy to do away with dj's & have a jukebox in the corner with Goldmine CD's on so they could choose there favourite 10 times a night. I'm happy with my little rooms with 50/60 of us admiring dj's plying there trade & showing off there latest tune they are raving about........rare or not it doesn't matter it's about the passion of the guy/girl behind the decks. Might be loads of night's listed but for me personally 95%+ aren't the type of night I'm looking for so my choice is getting smaller & I'm having to travel further more often. It's no drama as I find myself eking out some interesting night's I might have missed. Cheers Martyn

The Film - Reviews
I was out last night with a few of my mates who I went to Wigan with & we'd all seen the film,to a man all thought it was more or less spot on for what we'd experienced in our Wigan days. There was plenty of old names thrown up from the past to fit the various characters in the film & surprise, surprise there was more nutters names then any others Don't know about you lot but a week on from seeing the film I've been feeling really nostalgic for the old days & it's certainly had me think about some of my old mates I never see since those days, also about some of the antics we used to get up to.......thanks Elaine & Co for bringing back all these memories even if some of em are a bit scary Cheers Martyn
