  1. Thanks lads, sorted now
  2. Yeah mate. Sold it, regretted it, love it
  3. Don't count on tomorrow (Discovery) Pm me if you have one for sale Cheers Phil
  4. Aye. Can't recall who or what it was but remember the night. Was looking through boxes when the unmistakeable sound of a mat suddenly finding itself being 'played' at 45rpm hinted at a less than delicate on stage manoeuvre lol. Has to be up there in the pantheon of unequivocal, 'live' OVO-related interventions
  5. Mr Sheen British too didn't it (you'd have to push the middle out though)

It's too late Dave; I've just shot Little John in a fit of pique It's always been full of healthy debate and divergent taste which has gotta be a good thing ain't it. One example would be that Joseph Webster thing on Crow. If I found a box I'd take a hammer to every copy in the blink of an eye Some people love it, it's undeniably rare and commands a heavy price. I think it's sh*t of the highest order and a prime example of 'rarity over quality' if you like. And so it goes on ... Take it easy mate atb Phil

Following the molten nuggets of bronzed wisdom offered up here I got up this morning and snapped the fecker in half first thing. Still not 'quality' of course but even rarer now at least so you're potential sale to 1.5 potential buyers, globally, might still go ok mate; fingers crossed. Now, where's that Little John piece of sh*t?

Eyup Phil Little John can't sing either mate but I still absolutely love that record too because, like the Trent Sisters, it epitomises a time and a place when there was still a whiff of 'f*ckin get a load of this' in the all night air. Theres nothing quite like a drop of finest Wilson Turbinton champagne but you can't beat a wee dram of crazy Gogate whiskey when the moon is full lol.

Took me 25+ years to get one. Fantastic and dog rare. Would I sell it for 2k? Not even nearly. People want 1k+ these days for records that aren't even rare, never mind genuinely so.
  13. Need to fund a want so the following up for grabs, reluctantly Don't think so but if I'm miles out on any prices let me know / make a sensible offer (I ain't giving these away though) Primers - how does it grab you (Hale) really strong vg+/+ £1000 HOLD Green felt pen star and two biro crosses on hdigy label. Playing surface has only the odd v light surface mark which dnap Turbines - we've got to start over (Cenco) Ex+ £850 HOLD Immaculate in every respect Bobby Guitar Wood - mighty nice to know (Colt w/d) vg++ £275 Magic Chicago dancer. Small wol / crossing out??? Nothing horrendous. Playing surface is clean. Pretty hard on a demo I reckon Sharon McMahan - got to find another guy (Karen) Ex+ £550 Florence Miller - make it last c/u from bitd. What a record! Immaculate condition & cheap enough I think Shan-Dells - I've got to lover her (Bridge Society) Ex+ £200 SOLD Old Rob M spin. Great dancer and a really nice copy I'll do signed for UK, overseas I'll check & let you know but they'd be signed for. No trades ta, need cash for vinyl. Ppal f&f preferred but not essential. All really strictly graded as per ... atb Phil
  14. I'd agree, not really inspirational but ... Miracles is phenomenal. Allus think the odd 'underplayed' (yet somehow blatantly obvious) Motown thing thrown-in doesn't do any harm at all. Vandellas - heartless, Velvelettes - bird in the hand, Marv Johnson - miss you, Gladys Knight - ain't you glad etc etc. Just great records which stand-up in any company IMHO
  15. Trust me Byrney, it doesn't and wouldn't mate, not a chance. I've cleared an 'oldies' night floor in the NW in the last 18m (and all over the country for 20 years, piece of p*ss) with Professionals, Joe Matthews and Martha Starr: "I'm not being funny mate but play summat we know Ffs". Fortunately, the lad after me got things back on track with his Vibrations bootleg, to cries (literally) of "thank f*ck for that." It's funny now but that felt like quite a long hour from where i was stood! Frightening really.
  16. Eyup Dave Its that awesome, raw, rumbling backing which makes Joey H for me and a good record to link other, 'gritty' stuff in too I always think. Alice Clarke simply one of the best northern dancers of all time IMHO. Play it virtually every chance i get; a refreshing triumph of content over style lol. Donnie Wells just sounds 'right' next to LWF to my lugs and warrants a spin in any company so on it went. Nowt pre planned mate, a few requests in the mix which it's only right to try and slot in so the rest just turned round those in the main and felt right on the night - given what others had played and what got em up. Folk danced anyway so all good. Have a good Chrimbo!
  17. 30 bob, I've gone dizzy! That's another thing, l'm no bloody dj. Just got a few records I really, really love. There are only about ten people who really are in my book which, as we all know I think, is part of 'the problem' Ps. My rounders n your skirt = win win
  18. That's precisely my point Byrney. Butch, Kitch, AD, Carl F, Ady et al have newies and exclusives that stand up but even then they're in v short supply these days. (If you had access and they were good enough you'd play em without a shadow because thats whats driven it all these years). Conversely though, too many people trying too hard and resorting to second rate tosh or, on the other hand, not trying hard enough and plumping for the easy option with done to death tackle IMHO - still great records but would I travel to hear em over and bloody over again? Nah. As times gone by i've become ever more convinced we've gotta find the middle ground and most times I go out these days, which is pretty rarely to be honest, that's just confirmed. It ain't rocket science but its a northern scene first and foremost, isn't it? That ain't the same as a funk or nostalgia scene and, personally, I can live without either of those or elements of em til I pop off.
  19. Here's one for ya, a handful of things I played (no particular order) in an hour at a recent event: Honeybees - lets get back together Dennis Edwards - I didn't have to Charles Burns - I love my baby Stormy - devastator Trent Sisters - a letter a day Joey Heatherton - call me baby Little Stanley - outta sight lovin Little Willie Faulk - look into my heart Donne Wells - you've got my love West Coast Distributors - girl I love you Combinations - whatcha gonna do Del Tours -sweet and lovely Alice Clark - you hit me Brand new Faces - brand new faces Citations - two for the road Mystiques - put out the fire Pee Wee Shuck n Huey - beside myself Can't remember what else ... One comment was, apparently, "too much northern and oldies" (Someone asked for the Triumphs actually but indidn't have it with me). Individual taste n merits aside again, i can't see that as a load of done to death oldies on the whole but maybe i just dont get it anymore??? Obviously, everyone has a view and more power to em. The point is though that it's a northern soul scene isn't it! Bumping weight idiots abound and not just amongst the 'oldies brigade' by any stretch, plenty masquerading as 'connoisseurs' too and they're on the wrong feckin scene some of em (or I am lol) Conclusion: Like what you like and dont listen to clueless clowns with their daft pigeon holes and preconceived nonsense who think they know best. Ps. Someone (p*ssed) also told me to stop talking between records and just put em on. Naturally, I did as I was told ... erm ...
  20. Individual merits and taste aside, I think how much a record resonates at a time and place, and how long that endures for, often depends on precisely where and when you were when it hit home. I reckon an average record will have hit you harder and stay with you longer if you heard it and danced to it 'on the rise' in a packed room on a buzzing dance floor. I think it's hard to be really objective about records 'broken' in the period since the whopping, central nighters kinda declined. For anything to achieve the same status as things like the first three 'on the scene' nowadays, feck me they'd need to be special cos the context is so different. That doesn't mean they ain't as good of course, just that people tend to hear them in a really different environment ie its harder to 'hear' the next Tomangoes in a half empty room with no atmosphere populated by fat, balding sixty somethings. (Plus, after 30+ years at it for many, it's harder to be blown away I think. I'd take the Mello Souls personally; how would that intro have sounded to 600+ 18-25 year olds right on it?)
  21. You can't beat a gold un
  22. Waiting on some new mailers to arrive, should be here today / tomorrow. I will be posting em out soon as; hopefully tomorrow and weekend absolute latest cheers Phil
  23. Cheers chapss. I could make out that it's all part of a carefully thought out strategy I suppose. Nah, kids n tax'll do it everytime. The one thing I don't appear to be short of are records for some strange reason so having a bit of a cull. I really don't want some of these to go to be honest (Get a few quid in your paypal acc and start looking at sales lists )
  24. Still looking. Easily their hardest 45 to locate i think but can't be THAT hard can it? I've learned though that these are some of the toughest things to pick up in that they may not necessarily be hugely expensive and/or in demand but they're rare enough and tend to stay tucked away. Patience is the ticket I guess. Fingers still crossed anyway; PM me if you can assist.
