  1. Two quality records up for grabs. No offers on these thanks. Frank Foster - Harlem rumble (Triode) vg++ £800 One 'mark' which dnap. Labels clean. Nice, tidy copy of what remains a HUGE all-nighter tune, right up there with the best instrumentals IMHO and it's never been the eaisest to get hold of. JD Abram & the Handicappers Band - doctor of love / let me tell you what I want (Reena) vg+ £350 Stafford outing for Keb. Plenty of very light, superficial marks but nothing too dramatic at all. Really solid play copy of a rare record. (Plus you get two great sides for the dosh of course). Postage at cost, both will need to be SD and I'll post next week. Payment via Paypal f&f or transfer. cheers Phil

  8. Having a bit of a tidy up. A real mix here inc some harder to find things. PM to buy, if you want a pic etc All strictly graded as follows: M- practically an untouched record that plays as if it were brand new store stock VG++the odd barely discernible surface mark or minor blemish, nothing that will affect play in any way VG+ few more marks or light scuffs than a VG++ record but still sounds fine for listening and/or DJing. No scratches. Light surface wear. A used but far from abused copy, i.e. not shagged out! VG scuffs and light scratches throughout, most can't be felt. Expect some surface wear throughout the record with light surface noise and possibly a few pops in places. Should still serve as a suitable player copy for listening & DJing, i.e. still not shagged out! 9. Like a bomb going off. WHAT a record!
  10. I'd agree with what other folk have said in terms of hoovering up as much as you possibly can by listening to a broad range before parting with your hard earned. That done, I'd be disciplined and only buy what I absolutely loved, however anyone described it (oldies, crossover etc etc etc). Your taste and collection will evolve over time anyhow so balls to the pigeon holes ... Here's an armful I'd still buy if I was starting again on a tight budget. It's a real mixed bag but all are plenty good enough IMHO Dells - make sure (Cadet) Spyder Turner - you're good enough for me (MGM) Spyder Turner - can't make it anymore (MGM) Darrell Banks - open the door / our love is in the pocket (Revilot) Vontastics - lady love (Moonshot) Impressions - you've been cheatin' (ABC) Impressions - you ought to be be in heaven (ABC) Mary Wells - can't you see you're losing me (Atco) Major Lance - since I lost my baby's love (Volt) Bobby Bland - getting used to the blues (Duke) Betty Lavette - stand up like a man (Calla) Betty Lavette - feel good all over (Calla) Bud Harper - let me love you / Mr Soul (Peacock) Marvin Smith - have more time (Brunswick) Artistics - the chase is on (Brunswick) ZZ Hill - baby I'm sorry (Kent) Esquires - how could it be (Bunky) Precisions - if this is love (Drew) Precisions - instant heartbreak (Drew) Imperial Wonders - trying to get to you (Black Prince) Creations - I've got to find her (Globe) Creations - Oh baby (Globe) Louis Curry - I'll try again tomorrow (MS) Sharpees - tired of being lonely (One-Derful) JJ Barnes - chains of love (Groovesville) Al Kent - the way you've been acting lately (Ric Tic) JJ Barnes - please let me in (Ric Tic) JJ Barnes - I ain't gonna do it (Ric Tic) Happy hunting!

  16. Just the one to go. Bad news is that the labels are pretty shot. (Tried uploading but couldn't for some reason so if you PM I'll mail pics). On the plus side the vinyl is a solid vg++ and plays without any issues whatsoever. Just had a quick look on discogs and two available: a VG copy @ £372 + shipping and a vg+ @ £400+ shipping I'll take £300 + UK postage, Paypal f&f preferred. PM if you're interested cheers Phil
  17. Three quality, tried and tested dancers. These have gotta go to pay for something else unfortunately. I'll do Spec Del UK; overseas I'd need to check. Paypal F&F preferred if poss. Benny Curtis - dirty hearts Ex+ £425 Absolute banger that’s virtually disappeared. Has the almost inevitable 'Come to Sax's' wol; playing surface is as good as you'll see. JB Troy - live on (Musicor W/D) Ex+ £300 SOLD Pretty immaculate copy all round. Bud Harper - wherever you were (Peacock) Ex £225 Very slight label wear but nothing dramatic at all as you can see below. Playing surface very clean.

Every ounce of my being says don't but ... To whom it may concern, Re: This OVO thing people keep going on about This OVO (or whatever you want to refer to it as) thing is a bit of a red herring and an absolute road to nowhere in all honesty. At the heart of it all is the simple matter of integrity, i.e. not pretending to be something you're not and seeing the bigger picture. You and me, we're nobody, absolute nonentities in the greater scheme. Personally, I'm only interested in collecting original records and would only expect to pay to hear someone play original records. (That's my own daft fault and why I've never had any money for thirty years or so but hey ho. I'd advise against it tbh, just turn up and dance to whatever you're into). It's of absolutely no interest whatsoever to me what you want to do at home, down your local or wherever; it's none of my bloody business frankly. I choose where I go to and one determinant of that is who else is gonna be going and who is playing what: I expect that you'll do the same. So far so good then. The only thing is. sometimes some people are wont to extend their brass neck in order to shout the odds; invariably these are people who know not very much at all about not very much. They also tend to be really quite self absorbed in my experience. (I recall some of them turning up on the scooter scene and a quite dramatic transformation took place: I'd never seen a fat 'mod' until that point). I try to frequent events where people are trying hard to do things 'properly' - by that I mean not rolling out the same thoughtless pap you see advertised every Friday and Saturday every single week; you know, people with a bit of the aforementioned integrity who realise it's not about them. By and large it's a uplifting, heartwarming experience. I rarely feel suicidal as a direct result of attending, even now, so give it a whirl if you haven't already. Be warned though, from time to time you may encounter small cliques who find solace in grizzling and whining, faces fixed like smashed crabs, because someone has the audacity NOT to play FW or something else that's been entirely done to death and forms part of the great pantheon of around a hundred or so records around which their soul world is oriented. Worse still, if over the fullness of time you find yourself in the unenviable position of playing records to them then suicidal ideation is a very real possibility I'm afraid. You see, these same good people usually frequent venues where they can ask for absolutely anything - from Don Gardner to Ramsey Lewis or even that old favourite "true love, you know, TRUE LOVE!" Moreover, they fully expect you to play what they ask for - immediately, regardless of what else you're playing, have played or are intent on playing because they didn't / won't know them anyway: "it's all that rare shit and they're rare for a reason..." - this is usually a reference to something by JJ Barnes, Derek Martin or similar. Be aware that playing what they ask for, immediately, is entirely non negotiable! This particular challenge is underpinned by the fact that the 'djs' (aka relatives, mates etc) at their 'favourite' venues usually arrive with three cases holding 300 45s each - worth a grand total of about fifty quid. They've got everything those fellas and are of the same ilk. Moreover, it is those very same people who are so fond of the 'willy waving' and 'soul snob' lines. (These cut me to the very quick, as you might expect, but the fact that the irony doesn't resonate with them does offer some consolation in those darker moments when it's all too much). One of the other problems seems to me to be the fact that the vast majority of those same people were, in the main, nowhere to be seen between 1982 and 2000. Nonetheless, they have now decided that 'it's a way of life' and take every opportunity to 'show and tell' (which we did at primary school as I recall) anyone who'll listen just how all consuming it is to be 'a soulie': "it's a way of life ... it's what's in the grooves that counts ... you play the records not the labels". At the end of the day, don't worry too much about OVO or any of that other nonsense; as long as you're having a good time and not bothering me it's all good. ps. Oh aye, in the unlikely event that you do encounter any of these folk on your travels I wouldn't worry unduly as they'll get bored with it again quite soon or pack it in because they aren't getting enough attention. I'll still be at it though if you want to talk about soul records, OVO or any of that other nonsense.
  20. The hurt PM if you can assist cheers Phil
  21. Always been shenanigans and values are inherently subjective aren’t they. They also fluctuate wildly at times. Assuming you had no idea: A. Check LOTS of sources - online, ask collectors etc - until you feel you’ve a handle on rarity, current demand and a realistic, ballpark value B. Decide what it’s worth to you, bearing in mind grading / condition C. Pay what you can afford and live with D. Let people who try to rip folk off or can’t grade records know that you know, leave appropriate feedback if there’s a mechanism and never deal with em again. If people deviate from that and get stung they’ve made their bed really.
  22. Really, really sad news. Great lad was Pete. I’ll miss him. Thinking if you all Viv x
  23. And when a fire does not burn or when the world refuses to turn then i’ll stop girl, loving you Servicemen
  24. 😂 You can’t legislate for absolute nutters though can you. Top of my head, Soul Set, Frankie and Damons and several others I’ve clocked of late. Might just be me as I say.
