Just How Big Is The Modern Scene?
Brett, I understand what you are saying regards Bamberg 2011, I was there , Dave Ripolles played a great set on both the nights that you mention. My personal view is, at Bamberg, "Alternative Room" rather than "Modern Room" would be a much better description, but really this just emphasises what I was getting at. I know, speaking with a few people in that room on the Saturday, they were disapointed that the music played wasn't a little more diverse. As you are aware, and I'm sure will agree, at Bamberg in either room, and, particularly the cafe bar you are likely to hear a much wider range of soul music played and accepted by a younger and less critical audience than at any event in the UK. When you look at the playlists (Oh no, please don't start that again ) for some of the Latin and also Scandanavian events, the diversification message is even stronger. I'm not holding my breath on this one but, It would be nice if we in the UK,could get back to the days of attending events where we actually "enjoy" ourselves, listening to both the old and new played alongside each other. Life really was much simpler back in 1971

Just How Big Is The Modern Scene?
Isn't it time we stopped trying to pin a label on everything and just accept that the last 40 years have given us some great soul music to listen to. The soul scene in europe is, by and large much more accepting of the differing genres, as a result a lot more young people (mid 20s/ 30s) make up the attendance. Most, don't mind if a big northern tune,is played in the same room as something from Y2k, the prevailing attitude seems to be, as long as it's good what does it matter.

Playlists, Or The Lack Of Them
Is this a serious question ???

Playlists, Or The Lack Of Them
I didn't say that the menu should stale or be unchanging, to keep their regulars happy lots of bistro's have a daily menu, plat du jour, etc, All I'm suggesting is,its not a bad idea to let pottential customers know that the chef isn't going to "poison them".

Playlists, Or The Lack Of Them
I really can't see what all the fuss is about, its just advertizing, and its not exactly a new phenonemom is it ? Remember all those adds in "Blues and Soul" for the Cats, Mecca, Wigan etc with all the current spins of the day dotted around the edge.If publishing a play list, brings in just one extra punter it's done its job and has cost the venue "bugger all" to do so. The argument that we all know what to expect from certain djs at established venues, is a bit like saying, Rick Stein specializes is sea food, so he doesn't need to display a menu outside his restaurant. As for protecting exclusivity, abrv (insecurity) ......................the Halibut is really ..............Dover sole but don't tell Jamie Oliver. Monty Python script writers could't make this stuff up.

Kool And The Gang - Chocolate Buttermilk - 45 ?
It shouldn't Jord, but all the copies that I have had (and Rob Kay) do play an alternative Funk instrumental that deffo isnt Choc Butter, plus when ever I've seen this played out its always been of the Album. However if you've deffo got one, (two, do you wanna sell one ?) then you have answered my question. I'm just on my way over to Gaz Holymans now so I will take a copy and leave it there so you can hear what I mean. Regards John

Kool And The Gang - Chocolate Buttermilk - 45 ?
Hi Jordi, The picture shows the 45 but the tune playing is the Album version. What Im asking is, do all the 45s have the allternative tune or have I (and lots of others) just been unlucky in finding a miss pressed batch. Regards, JF

Kool And The Gang - Chocolate Buttermilk - 45 ?
Is this available on 45 ? Reason for asking, I have had this a few times on b side of "Let the music take your mind" - Delite DE 529 - 0, but it plays a totally different tune to the album version on the you tube link below. I have asked a few other people about this and most say the same thing "that all the singles have the different version" ( sorry I cant upload it ) Just wondered if anybody can throw any light on this ? Regards J F

Tony Jebb (Golden Torch/Blackpool Mecca Dj)
Tony always had an eye (and a few other bits as I remember) for the ladies. His wife Judith was stunning. For those who dont know the story, he held his wedding reception at the Torch and organised a coach to Stoke from Blackpool. On the way out of town the coach was stopped and searched by the local DS ( Jeff Abbot ?) This caused a well known DJ and record producer to, do something wich resulted in "said person" dancing (not a pretty sight) until Wednesday of the following week. Happy Days

Tony Jebb (Golden Torch/Blackpool Mecca Dj)
First time I ever went to Blackpool Mecca in 71, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. He waltzed into the Highland room wearing a white lace shirt with bell sleaves and carrying two boxes of records. I thought it was Freddie Mercury, when my mate said "thats Tony Jebb" I couldnt believe it and I thought my god what the f***ks he gonna play. When he did his spot I was in complete awe.Got to know him quite well over ther next year or so. The first big name Dj on a then emerging Northern, scene and a true legend. Very sad news indeed.
