northern soul - the current state...?
That badge chest t shirt would be funny if it wasn't so embarrassing

The blurred line...
Think it's all going a bit tuts up when you are giving credit to the Bee gees and Abba on a soul music forum

The blurred line...
This subject has been debated continuously for donkeys years. I remember Richard Searling posted his modern soul top 50 in about 1982 and the words disco music were fired at him. His reply was that the club djs of the day would have rejected 49 of those tracks on dance beat alone with only Arthur Adams "You got the floor" being accepted. Mark C😜 Ps...True Image always reminds me of Gonzalez - I haven't stopped dancing yet....

The closest North and South came together.... Musically
How about the Bedford Nite Spot Allnighters in 1980 with Steve Whittle and Soul Sam bringing down the Flavour of the North to the East Anglian Soul Club. Can clearly remember Sam spinning the Traditions "My Life With You" under the guise of Little Joe Romans. A brilliant niter in what was an old cinema - great nights! Mark C😉

Simon Soussan Djing @ Wigan Casino
I once borrowed some Wigan tapes from Billy Maguire. The sound quality was awful but it sounded like some dodgy instrumentals which could be Soussan. I'm out with Billy tomorrow and will ask. Mark C😎

Celebrities Who Are Or Have Been Into Northern Soul
A photo of Chris Waddle came up on tv yesterday. When he moved from Newcastle to Spurs he commented in a magazine that he didn't think he would find northern soul in London....

Unbelievable
I'm not a collector but hate the thought of someone playing a bootleg. I know people who have been collecting for years. Some have hit it lucky with a cheapie in 1985 now going for mega bucks but it works both ways. Embarrassing when they've spent ages tracking down a record just to hear its been booted and the local doo are playing it. A small crowd of us travel regularly long distances to listen to certain djs, avoid certain places like the plague. Soul snob? Maybe

There's a guy on the floor most of the night at Bury, always see him there. Was told he dances in the same way as he did at The Catacombs. We always make the same comment, there he is...fabulous!

The rise of the 'NEW' soulie and the soul revolution.
Would that have been in the main northern room at Blackpool? I don't think the baggy attire would be the norm in the modern or rare room. I have been going to the 100 club for many years and its never really had a dress code in my opinion. A mixture of smart mods, casual wear and maybe the odd soulie style. Maybe more northerners who are recent converts are following the so called dress code.I'm from Norwich which us considered south (lol) and some of the oldies lads wear bags. The small cried of us that do niters certainly don't!

Amazing times for me also in the 80s from the 100 club you hit Leighton buzzard, up to East Anglia with Peterborough. The mighty Midlands venues like Leicester and Chesterfield. On the east coast Cleethorpes WG and Morecambe on the west. Bradford and Warrington Parr hall up north and over the border to Shotts. Many more of course (Stafford and Clifton Hall setting the pace)

Are we at a point now where the playing of expensive originals is considered snobbish by some people and they should play reissues instead? You couldn't make it up

The rise of the 'NEW' soulie and the soul revolution.
I ran a soul night in Norwich for 33+ years, kept the whole thing going whike many people had left and done that family thing. A returnee comes one night (l was poorly so not there) and goes into one because the music was unfamiliar, demanding her money back etc (apparently her friend had paid for her to get in!) Now she is getting spots playing the boots she had in the cupboard for the last 35 years, records that were dropped because they had become stale and boring. Sorry but this to me is a bit if a wind up but the people putting her on don't seem to care because she was a face at St Ives in '76. Tragic...

The death of large Hall commercial oldies nighters

Richard Searling Book - Setting The Record Straight - News
I thought it had already been acknowledged that Love Starved Heart wasn't a Wigan record after it was featured in the film Northern Soul. The conclusion was that although the film was set in 1974 (I think), the director had used the track for artistic licensing reasons.

The rise of the 'NEW' soulie and the soul revolution.
The guy in question actually owns the record, made me laugh! I've hated it since I first heard it in 1980 at Derby assembly rooms, that warbling vocal does my effing head in. Just to add I've been a regular on the niter scene since 1978, always pretty much kept myself to myself. I travel 1000's of miles in the UK and Europe to support niters and weekenders. Not blowing my trumpet but it's been and still is a big part of my life. Pretty much been dismissive of the pop stomper sound (what ever you want to call it) since I got into the music in 1976. In a way it's a blessing that there are 2 (at least) scenes, one for the revivalists and another for those of us who prefer a more "grown up" environment. I'm not a snob but can't stand how some parts of the scene have been watered down...

Bobbie Smith was certainly a massive sound at Leicester Oddfellows. Tht's when I first heard it, about 1984

A friend of mine dj'd at a night in Manchester recently. Soul Sam was also on the bill and referred to a singer as Holly St. Shite. I aint gonna argue with that..... Mark C

News: NORTHERN SOUL SAVED MY LIFE
It's a nice story and I'm glad that this lady has made a good recovery and is using music therapy. I am just fed up with the amount of groups calling themselves a northern soul band. It seems to have become the next big thing on the commercial tip and some of them are awful.

News: NORTHERN SOUL SAVED MY LIFE
Sorry, but imho thus has nothing to do with northern soul. Just another average singer doing cover versions
