  1. Having read through the thread it seems to me that the reasons given for falling attendance is complacency, and I'm as guilty of that as anyone. We can all bang on about the venue - lack of seating, dancefloor, entry policy, travel, the magnitude of choice of alternative venues, and the economy, but when all considered (apart from the entry policy) these considerations and gripes have always been around and feel to me to be more like excuses than valid reasons. It's ironic that the fact that the 100 Club has been around for so long that it fuels the expectation that it will always be around, and if you don't get to the next all-nighter, you can always go to the one following. I've been using this excuse for so long now that I can't now recall the last time I went. I'm with Eddie on playlists, I think they provide an understanding not only of the sounds you're likely to hear, but also make a great statement on the music policy. I know it works both ways, and I should probably make an effort to find out, but I have no idea what you, Mick or Joel play currently. The club has always had a great reputation for playing and breaking fresh music, and the size of the venue lends itself to chancing new plays, and it would be a great shame to lose a forward thinking club, there's not nearly enough of them. I think your kick up the arse message has hit home and if we want the 100 Club to be around then we have to give it support. See you on the 22nd...
  2. All CDs mailed today (finally.... ), including copies of Philly Dave's CD for Alan and Mal.....
  3. Agree it's a top tune Roger, it had some small plays when it first turned up way back, and long overdue for some proper plays... been playing it out myself for a short while to some very positive floors and head nodders.... Coffee and CDs should always be kept well apart...though Starbucks often have some nice soulful jazz tunes on their compilations......
  4. Steve's room or Tef's room.... ?
  5. That's what I heard......
  6. I can just about understand getting Coco & Ben and C Coulter confused, but William Cummings ????
  7. I agree with you (yeah I know I've already voted for Robert Tanner), but ssshhhh.... it's over played apparently ....
  8. Right from the intro guitar riff you know that's never a crossover tune..... love it to death but I think your label defines it a whole lot better.... otherwise I'll claim Prince George - DPG..
  9. It just goes to show that one man's Northern is another man's crossover. I'd have put the Volumes very firmly in the bag labelled 'Northern', the tempo and style say so..... Since John's allready baggsied Chuck Ray, then I'll go for Robert Tanner - Sweet Memories....
  10. It's a genre/style...not a historic reference point... keep up...
  11. Wrongcrowd replied to a post in a topic in Record Wants
No takers..... could be you'll need to go a little higher than that Mark.... by 100% I'd have said...
  12. Ed Summers, Bobby Womack - 'Modern Soul' (of course) ..... get a grip....
  13. Pete, I know you'll always speak your mind, and you're entitled to your opinion, but honestly there's something going on with you that translates the most soulful of tunes into the worst crass pop, and you need some serious help.... Lynn Varnardo = Agadoo, are you for real ??!! To describe the lyrics of Wash And Wear Love as 'truly terrible' is just a touch at odds with Dave Godin's review of it in Blues & Soul, as a new play...... but then what did Dave know.... it's all being rewritten anyhow.... Apologies for going off topic here, but I feel a lot better now....
  14. Yes, you have... it's the black and white one in your box.....
  15. I agree with you Pete, though not absolutely 'because of the beat'. The point I'm making is thay they have far more in common in terms of production and tempo with thel label 'crossover' that they no longer fit today's narrow definition of 'Northern'.... .... and Lynn Varnardo.... is soul as perfect as it comes....
  16. A very good point Gareth, though the label of 'crossover' really and truly describes a soul music and tempo style, which prior to the label being applied had always been a part of the mainstream and broad 'Northern' scene in any case, way before Stafford. So many of the 'Northern classics' played back in the day would now be sidelined to a 'crossover / modern soul' room for being too slow as new plays today..... Mel Britt, Lynn Varnardo, Bobby Hutton, Keanya Collins, Lovelites, Anderson Brothers, Voices of East Harlem, Eloise Laws... great soul records played to full floors, the list could go on and on. Some people have very short and convenient memories and are hell bent on narrowing the perspective of a scene that was once passionate about the whole of soul music. The narrowness isn't just restricted to sidelining post 60's soul to seperate rooms, 60's mid-tempo soul also doesn't seem to fit today's 'scene' according to some people. I was at a friend's birthday party a couple of weeks back, and one of the DJs played Lee Andrews 'I've Had It' and the question was asked whether this would ever have room as a new play in today's 'Northern rooms'.... the consensus of opinion was a very sad but true no.

  19. Hi Mal, Sorry I missed your earlier post.... where've you been, we had last shouts out for this swap weeks ago... PM me with your address details and I'll forward to all the swappers..... Right that's Mal and AJB signed up.....door finally, finally, absolutely closed.....
  20. I have Lars' CD playing now.....some very nice tunes, and future bank balance impact... Rob's CD duo arrived yesterday, so I'll be getting into them over the weekend...
  21. Well no, actually....there's also a multi-coloured copy in the sales area too.....Jock's rare red and white copy is way too cheaps, 'cos my multi-coloured can't possibly be over priced given the price paid in a recent JM auction..... No doubt about it red and whites are by far the rarer....
  22. Aside from the obvious omission of Eugene Smiley's name, other differences are the IRDA (International Record Distributing Assoc.) distribution logo and catalogue number which are also missing from from the stock copy. The promo label shows a release number of IRDA 481-B, whereas the stock copy's number is KC 481-B. Although the track time 3:26 is the same, without hearing the stock copy there's no absolute way of knowing any recording differences, so I suppose we'll need Dave to post up a clip. Further anorak info....the matrix scratched into the deadwax is IRDA 481B ZSSB 149083-1A. I suppose it's possible that the stock copy was pressed before a distribution deal with IRDA, and the promos were pressed following..... they probably do a lot of things differently in Kansas.... Over to you Mr. Thorley......
  23. Just pondering on how interesting your weekends would be when last weekend sounds the same as the weekend before, and the one 27 years before that.....

Four Pros - Just Another Girl / There Must Be A Reason - Carla WD Ex 150 PM to reserve...
