Soul Britannia
Hi Steve, yep they can make a good prog when they want and the first episode was excellent which is why I was so dismayed at this pile of shite. Forgot to mention in the above that even the Skinheads were allowed to be portrayed as non-racist (which b4 anyone starts ranting about it I know is fair comment!!!) but this is why I was even more livid that we were singled out!!!! Why didn't they interview Searling, Ady, Keb even you Steve!???? At least we'd have had a fair balanced and correct portrayal. It will be interesting to note if any of our comments appear on the BBC 4 site, have a feeling mine won't despite being toned down to an 'angry soul man from Surbiton' style

Soul Britannia
My, how this has got us all up in arms! I've sent my toned down rant to the BBC S.B website (and urge everyone to do the same) but wanted to air my abridged views here. Ivor is spot on, all my black friends were into Reggae more than the Northern Soul we loved, simple as that. For Jazzie B to state the scene was white working class and racist makes my blood boil and to be honest f**ks me off that we can be tarnished in this way on a national TV programme and with no apparent counter view being aired to redress the balance. The relevant points has been well aired on this very thread so I wont go into my usual 'Victor Meldrew of Soul' rant right now. What I think we should be concentrating on is that the producers of this travisty allowed this point to go out unchecked and used, as someone stated earlier, selective editing of the Casino clips we all know pretty much off by heart now to illustrate and underline their assertion that we are, in short, a white racist scene. I don't know about you but this makes me veryvery angry that once again we have been screwed and, to their credit, the BBC have made the worst BAR NONE programme about our scene ever! Jesus even David Bowie was given more credit and airtime on the very same programme. Apathy is a terrible thing boys and girls so don't sit there and moan int your mug of tea, get up and write to the S.B comments board, flood the Points Of View board and fight for the truth to be heard!!! If we allow this sh**te purporting to be representative of our scene to go unchallnged then we can only expect more of the same and, to be blunt, I don't want to have to be explaining to people in the future why I was part of a 'white working class racist scene' - do you?

6ts 100 Club Jan 20th All Nighter Cancelled
Hi Ady Sorry to hear the news but certain the 6Ts, as it always has done, will bounce back. Been many years since I ventured down the stairs and spun into the pillars,or shared sweat and laffs with Keb, helped Taff back to his chair etc but have fond happy memories of the club and, and this is the important part, the people as they are the club, not the venue. Everything changes but you, hang on thats a Take That quote! Onwards and upwards mate.

Suspicion Originals Unissued
Wah-wah guitar! Thats the description I was looking for Mr T!!!! I'd heard there were only 3 versions (vocal) as well but wait to be proven wrong with the next Cd offering from the likes of Ms Wallace etc. It would be nice for the wah-wah version (as I shall now refer to it is) to get a issue on cd and save me the job of having it cut off and all the pain-in-the-arse farting around having a legit looking acetate label made up for djing with

Suspicion Originals Unissued
Ok, there are a number of versions of this in the vauts I belivie, the well known one and the one i have on tape which is a more guitar led rhythm, simiar to this in tempo. Still a gret toon and that despite the awful speeded up version mentioned above

Sad News Pickle From Walsall RIP
Just wanted to add our heartfelt sympathy to all of Pickles family and friends. Craig and Jenny let me know the sad news and was truly saddend to hear of the loss of one of the scenes characters, As has been said in the 80's Pickle, along with Rod, Mad Mick, Craig, Del, all the Letchworth Firm went eveywhere together. Morecombe, Leciester and just about anywhere you care to mention. I shall have fond happy memories of the Tazmanian Devil spinning wildly out of control and sending at least 4 of us flying on a regular basis. I'll be raising a glass to him later this evening.

Tip, Tap & Toe
Dearest Jo, I'm hurt that you didn't ask me AGAIN!!!!! For your info TIP TIP and TOE were: Samuel Green (tip), Ted Fraser (tap) and Ray Winfield (toe). Often danced on table tops and other small spaces (hmmmm they'd fit in well at Soulgate babe!!!) with Ray considered to be the innovator of the slidingstyle of tap, later copied by everyone. Movies: All By Myself (1943) and You Cant Everything (1937)

The Merging Traffic
Same thing works on my missus - Oooh er!
-
The Merging Traffic
Quite a hard toon to find (if memory serves) and yes Mr Hayes involved on this ditty out of Litlle Rock. Some info: Matching the Coachmen in professional perfectionism and popularity were the Romans, consisting of Gary Hall (lead vocal, rhythm guitar), Phil Miller (lead guitar), Rocky Hestes (keyboard, vocals), Charles Wycott (bass), and Greg Kempner (drums). The group had a local hit with the 1966 My Records single, the Byrds-influenced “I’ll Find a Way.” Reconstituted in 1967 as Merging Traffic, the group expanded with new members Richard Shook (bass, vocals), Bob Younts (sax, vocals), Bobby Lincoln (trumpet), and Jim Matthews (who replaced the deceased Kempner on drums). After scoring well locally with the 1968 My Records release “Ain’t No Need,” on which the band displayed a mastery of the Memphis horn sound, Merging Traffic was signed by Decca, a major label, and had a minor national hit with “Bit By Bit.” * Sold mine last year to a guy in the States for $250 (result I thought!) but not sure if I stil have a MP3 of it on file, very Memphis Sound if memory serves right

Does no one read posts!!! I thought I'd pointed out it was released under the name of Big Maybelle above - DOH!!! LOL

The Charmers - Looking For Trouble @ Pip
Will have to check but I think I'm right in thinking that this isn't the Charmers but someone else but the wrong creds went with the 45. Will have a look tomorrow and let you know. Either way a great toon and an old Guy Hennigan (or 'doesn't he look like that bloke out of Frankie Goes To Hollywood' as we used to call him in our Stafford days!!!!) if memory serves right. *** Ok have looked in the files and I was right(ish). The 45 is The Charmers, signed to Laurie records a few months B4 the Chiffons and therefore standing no chance of breaking into the big time, they teamed up with Tony Bruno (and for those who are asking he was the man behind Maxine Browns early hits and an important truck driver turned producer in the Soul world.) The 45 is superb, lead singer Terri sounding as though she'd give you a right good Bitch Slapping whether your a girl or a boy!!!! However, and heres the mix up, those lovely people at Impact records issuedin 1985 an LP with an alt. version credited to Big Maybelle that later turned out to be a different vocal mix on the Charmers and Terri the bruiser. Hence my confusion on these very pages. So, if you've got the Lp its not Big M. but The Charmers and a completely different mix which came out on an Ace CD some years later. Right, hope thats as clear as mud. Continue.
