  1. Hi Ian, Great tune can't remember where I first heard it and then heard it on the film the Fighter last year. Talking about Dyke and the Blazers I believe Funky Broadway was the last track played at the Wheel in1966 by the late great Roger Eagle.
  2. I've just listened to it on Radio 2 website and enjoyed it. I thought Ady,Kev and Richard were honest in their views including Richards on todays scene for the majority of punters. It was refreshing to hear from a younger element who go to the 100 club. I thought Elaine and Tony (the film makers) came across with insight and a genuine love for the scene. I can't say the same about the Modest Ians contribution regarding the wheel(95% bo**ocks anyway) Pete Waterman did a good job in the main apart from the coal miners, false teeth, teddy boys and i'm amazed he didn't throw in Whipets and clogs. I think this day and age any publicity is good for a scene it may attract a sprinkling of new punters.

  10. I agree with SEBASTIAN on the PHYLLIS DILLON version it's nowhere near the quality of BETTYE SWANN version or even the ZZ HILL cover in my honest opinion
  11. 2 TRACKS FROM 1970 TWISTED WHEEL but may of not had much airing ever since both LP only tracks LARRY WILLIAMS & JOHNY WATSON - TAKIN' NO CHANCES JIMMY HOLIDAY - SPREAD YOUR LOVE a fantastic dancer not the slower single version Some airplay these would really take off
  12. Kev, I had "No stranger to love" at the time but I never played it or I never heard anybody else play it at the Wheel. Undecided I only got after the Wheel closed
  13. Jimmy, I had Poor Dog at the Whel but never played it I couldn't believe it when it got played I couldn't give it away.
  14. Malc, Dee Dee Sharp was a new release to us as it had just come out on Action.
  15. Hi Steve, Apart from The Carrolls because we played the Peaches and Herb version were all played. I tried to list tracks that were allniter tracks not put on the previously listed CD tracks. I could go on and on and list stuff that was played but was also played in a lot of other clubs in Manchester etc. We did play stuff on new release or import untill it spread to the rest of the clubs then dropped it. I could go on listing lots more like DANNY WHITE AMD DONALD HEIGHT etc but I think I've listed enough. Their's a lot of stuff we had but didn't play either because of the tempo or quality that became biig sounds later. Cheers Brian
  16. THANKS TED AND MANUS, The people who deserve the credit are the people who have carried the scene on and made it mean so much to everybody involved for over 40 years. Regards Brian
  17. MERRY CHRISTMAS SWISH(and anybody else who cares to get involved in this discussion) You're right Swish it is good fun especially that I'm bored and got loads of time on my hands at the moment. I never said I discovered all them tunes I said they were played at the Wheel quite a few I did discover. I Introduced lots of tunes to the Wheel and some I reintroduced stuff that previous DJs didn't have and hadn't been played for ages like Alexandra Patten, The Saphires, Hoagy Lands,Major Lance stuff etc. I know Dave Slater a great lad I think he didn't go as much from Mid 69 onwards but ask him. You couldn't have gone in 1970 and not heard Out on the Floor always played twice. The Cats was big in 1969 onwards Bob Crocker and Alan Smith(unfortunatley no longer with us)and a lot of the tunes started at the Cats. I'm not doubting your dedication to the scene or your pedigree. After the Wheel I went to up the junction once and The Torch at least half a dozen times plus quite a bit to the Mecca and a odd visit to Va Vas and The Pendelum. I use to take stuff for the DJ's to play at The Torch etc. I was probably the first guy to specialise in rare soul lists 1968 to 1975. I supplied all the main DJ's and collectors Keith Minshul,Colin Curtis,Ian Levine,Dave Langley,Neil Rushton,Julian Bentley,John Manship,Ian Dewhurst, Soul Sam,Pep and 100's more. Anybody who was serious about rare soul would know of me I actually disovered a lot more after the Wheel. By the way I made a mistake on them lists Williams and Watson track we use to play wasn't" one good reason "It was Taking no chances had it cut on to an EMI disc try listening to it you can You can rediscover it along with Spread your Love(album version)annd Ive got to live while I can Jimmy Holliday. ALL THE RECORDS LISTED WERE PLAYED AT THE WHEEL (except Barbara Lynn- take your love and run) BEST REGARDS BRIAN
  18. kegsy. The scene was bigger than just 500. The Wheel could hold 600 - 700 and was regularly packed,The Top 20 was also packed,The Cats, The Chateau and about another 20 were also going although not allniters. When I left the Wheel I would say 30% were played on import. Imports turned up in lots of unusual places ie Whitchappel Market ,soho and record corner in London, Tib Street,Shudehill,in Manchester etc. I use to import from 1970 onwards when you had to fill all sorts off forms for sending money out of the country because of the balance of payments. FL Moore was also importing in 1970 and many private colectors were turning up with all sorts of stuff what was credited as later discoveries. Baby Reconsider was originally a Chateau record made more famous at the Wheel but their was lots of anomalies. By 1971 imports I would guess were 50% of the scene at The cats and The mecca Regards Brian
  19. SWISH, I don't know what your'e on but I'd go and get it checked out. You obviously didn't go to the Wheel unless you went to the last one with ten thousand others( I wasn't there then) I don't know where to start but lets have a go. I have made one mistake on the list Barbara Lyn- Take your love and run THE REST 100% got played plus lots more. I didn't mention Sandi Sheldon because it on the CD's and if you read the post I said I would avoid them already listed. All but 1 0r 2 I played personally. Out on the floor was played at the Cats, Chateau and the Wheel from 69 onwards. Domino played as a new release,Queen of fools, I hurt on the other side (until I left),Darkest Days,Unsatisfied,Love reputation,Feels Good, your'e loosing me,Good things come to those who wait, In orbit,Sufferin' City and You ought to be in heaven were all big tunes at the Wheel. A lot of the others you dispute Lady love, heartbeat, picture me gone,Invitation and few more were clasic tunes played from re lease and less so later on. Robertr Banks, Fireman and The Kelly brothers I played quite a bit were never that big. This is the thanks I get, The drifter and few more I played the last half hour. Williams and Watson and Isley Brothers(I'm pretty sure) Phil Saxe played of the album (we didn't know at that time is was out on OKEH) I had left by then September 1970 The Adlibs Dave Godin brought down. All but The Adlibs,Isley Brothers Joy lovejoy, please let me in and Darkest Days I had in my collection when I left so a lot didn't get played afterwards from September 1970 onwards. I also had just got Emanuel Laskey and Moses Smith from a deal I done in May but didn't get until September so they got played on my last night. Regarding CD's I don't recolect Bobby Paris or The Vibrations being played. THE PEOPLE WHO TOLD YOU THEY DISCOVERED WHATEVER ARE FULL OF SHIT. NO REARANGING HERITAGE OR DODGY 40 YEAR OLD MEMORIES
  20. Tony, Regarding this matter I was PM'd by Julian to clarify a point regarding Robert Banks. My memory on this matter is crystal clear I found Robert Banks along with Jerry Cook in Tib Street Manchester mid 69 they were played at the Wheel until I left and not after. Richard Selwood and some of the Bridgnorth lads on here could probably confirm as The lads at the Catacombs were very keen on trying to buy them from me. Regarding Bobby Bennett I bought this on Columbia demo some old electrical shop near Soho just took a flyer on it being a demo etc. At the time hadn't heard the Franki Valli version, Bobby Bennett became huge at the Wheel and shortly after someone informed me of the Franki Valli version which I then got and started playing. I believe later Carl at the Chateau was playing Bobby Bennet as a cover up. I'm sure someone would have had Franki Valli earlier but I'd never heard it or anyone ever playing it so Bobby Bennet was played first at the Wheel unless it was played as a new release or before 1967. I don't know why it's such a big deal Mighty good way wasn't that popular at the Wheel but if anyone wants a bet I'm up for it . The problem is people who came on the scene later think the sounds were being broke for the first time in a some cases instead of just being more popularised. For instance although I wasn't aware at the time but Tainted Love, I'm on my way and several other later credited discoveries were being played at The Blue Note just up the road from the Wheel around 1968/69 by ex Wheel lads who had moved on. I could think of lots of stuff played at the Wheel credited to being discovered later but we'll be here for ever Remember people had been importing stuff from the States since the late 50's.if not before, more blues but later soul stuff. Roger Eagle had arrangements with Duke, Backbeat, Stax etc from 1965 onwards and of course Guy Stevens. Regards Brian
  21. Your right a very underated Wheel classic for years it was always introduced as I NEED SOMEONE TO LOVE because the label was on the wrong side and no one cottened on including myself. The fab re release had it the right way. The Hoop was another great track by him. Rufus Lumley wasn't that big at the Wheel but it got played a few times. Regards Brian
  22. Phil, Pm. you Regards Brian
