Grimsby South Bank Club
Hi Steve, It was Tony Brown a wheel regular from Cleethorpes who put that event on it was 1970 not 69. I didn't drive then and went by train changing at Rotherham I think their was about 50 people there. I went back to Tonys flat after and found a couple of singles he'd just got that he wasm't mad keen on Moses Smith Girl across the street and Emanuel Laskey Peace loving man so I traded them and thats how they got started. I wonder where Tony is now a great lad and one of the early big collectors. Regards Brian

Strong Love - By Spencer Davis Group
I'm sure Guy Stevens would have had a great influence on the group releasing this track with the Chris Blackwell connection. He also had a massive influence on a lot of the material released by the early British rhythm & blues groups with is knowledge and collection. I know Roger Eagle would have had The Malibu's because he received all the new releases on Duke,Backbeat,Sureshot,Peacock,Stax and a few other labels including Motown up until about 67. Stevie Winwood and Van Morrison IMHO the two greatest British vocals of alltime. Regards Brian

By 67/68 a lot of Manchester drinking clubs were dominated by the latest soul releases and some re-releases on stax, atlantic, motown, direction, and a smattering of stateside. So a lot of this stuff got played at early sessions less so at the allniters.- Can We Have A Wheel Thread? I have PM you- What They Sold For In June 1970
I had a few sources in Philadelphia, Memphis,Michigan, Martin Kopel who was in Canada and your old friend Mr Sousann.I use to have to shift through hundreds at a time listening to allsorts of crap before compiling the lists the trouble was after the Torch and I'd stop going to the Mecca I lost a lot of interest and eventually just jacked it in. I sent the list out all at the same time in SAEs I received around 250 each month. A lot of serious collectors and DJ's just turned up on spec because I didn't have a phone in the old council house. I'd come in drunk and people would be waiting for me especially Ian,Soul Sam and lots of others.- What They Sold For In June 1970
Hi Ian, I didn't keep any when I moved house I left loads of chests full of that sort of stuff in my Dads for him to throw out. However I later met a few old customers who sent me some photo copies of lists from around 73 onwards I would scan some in on here if I could.I will see if I can get someone at work to do it. In 1970 some big money started to be offered I know farmer Carl got offered £10 plus for Baby reconsider and Darkest days. I was offered the same for Jerry cooke Robert Banks Emanuel Laskey and Moses Smith at the Wheel by some guys from the Midlands. Regards Brian- What They Sold For In June 1970
I remember FLMoore lists from 1967 they sold allsorts of mixed genres and later on by 1970 got more into soul imports because of the growing demand. Some of the prices on the list were quite expensive 1n 1970. I use to sell hundreds of records at the time at the Wheel and other clubs the ones I didn't sell personally I put on my monthly lists which I started in 1968. The following prices are what I use to get in mid 1970, although I know the Gloucester and Catacombs lads use to get a bit more. Heres a few examples>>> UK RELEASE ORIGINALS Alexandra Patten A lil love sometimes,Bobby Sheen Dr.Love,Art Freeman Slipping around,Invitations Whats wrong with my baby,The Incredibles There's nothing else to say,Roscoe Robinson That's enough,Little Anthony Gonna fix you good,Garnet Mimms Looking for you,Mary Love You turned my bitter into sweet,Major Lance Everybody loves a goodtime& Investigate,The Spinner Sweet thing,James Carr Thats What I wanna know,Mitch Ryder Breakout.Barbara Mills queen of fools.ALL WERE £1.50 US IMPORTS IN DEMAND AT THE TIME The Artistics This Heart of mine,Bobby Taylor Oh Ive been blessed,,Johnie Taylor Changes,Mitch Ryder You Get your Kicks,Bob Wilson Feels Good,JJ Barnes Real Humdinger,Denis Laselle A love Reputation,Francis Nero Keep on loving me,Clifford Curry I can't get hold of myself,Fantastic 4 I can't stop looking for my baby,Bobby Bland Shoes.ALL WERE £2 OTHER US IMPORTS Edwin Starr Backstreet and Agent OO soul,Marlen Shaw Lets wade in the water,The Artistics chase is on,The duettes Every beat of my heart,The Ojays Working on your Case, Gene chandler Barbara Ackllin Teacher to the preacher,Jackie Wilson Sweetest Feeling Dobie Gray out on the floor,The Impressions you ought to be in heaven & Nothing can stop me,Kelly Brothers Love Time,Barbara Lyn This is the thanks I get & Youre loosing me. The rainbow copies I've had the labels were the right way but the fab copy the labels on the incorrect side. I need somebody to love me a great Wheel sound.- Northern Soul Tunes That Made The Pop Top 20
Malc, Regarding Chairman of he Board I use to play that before it got released in the Uk at the Wheel and stopped as soon as it got released when all the other clubs started playing it. Regards Brian- Roger Eagle's View Of The Emerging Ns Scene
Its quite right to say Roger was loosing interest in the more uptempo beat that certain elements of the all nigher crowd were demanding but he knew a lot more about it than people seem to think on here. In the late 60's soul was being played everywhere but the all nighter scene was different to normal club hours scene. Most clubs played the classic motown sprinkled with a few more comon tunes from the more collectable scene added to re released mid 60's rarer favourites. With the closure of the Wheel hundreds of the all night crowd were looking for a new scene a lot off the collector types went to the Catacombs,Up the Junction sprung up for a while, the Mecca opened and The Torch benefited the most. Regards Brian- Roger Eagle's View Of The Emerging Ns Scene
Hi Rod,He was playing all the English classics such as Bobby Sheen,Alexander Patten,The Invitations, Homer Banks,Bobby Bland,Gene Chandler,Shirley Ellis , American Poets,Major Lance,Art Freeman,James Carr,Sharpes,Thw Tams,The Spellbinders,The Saphires, just to name a few plus all Motown stuff and just to much to mention their wasn.t much he would have missed on English plus he was importing stuff. By 1969?70 we had 100's of imports and their wasn't much uk stuff left to find to my knowledge, Regards Brian- Roger Eagle's View Of The Emerging Ns Scene
Roger kicked off hundreds of what later became NS classics but liked to mix them up with his love for the funkier stuff and Rythm & Blues so he knew plenty about all genres. He obviously wanted to play a variety and fell out of love with the scene at the Wheel with the younger generation just wanting the more uptempo sounds so he was disillusioned thus is comments. It's quite understandable so he moved to the Blue Note where the crowd was a bit older and more drink than drugs influenced and a more eclectric mix of soul was played. He certainly was no overplayed charachter in fact the opposite with all that he contributed to many different scenes I don't think anyone comes close, a true legend. Regards Brian- Remember Roger Eagle
Tony, Thats why I put North/uk I am aware how influential Guy was I think the pair of them are miles ahead of everyone else. Hope to make The Hideaway myself. Regards Brian- Remember Roger Eagle
Roger was probably the most influential DJ/promoter the North if not the whole UK has ever had. From introducing R&B and soul fans to records they would never have heard otherwise, from the obscure mod sounds to future northern soul clasics. He established contacts with the Duke,Peacock,Backbeat labels so that the Twisted Wheel received all their new releases. He was responsible for booking the fantastic acts that appeared there and left a legacy that is still relevent to this day. After leaving he went on to DJ at the Blue Note and later a couple of other lesser known clubs. In 1967 he opened the Magic Village the first "underground" club of its kind up north featuring progressive rock- blues etc where he booked all the up and coming future legends of rock. This was incidently previously a soul club The Jigsaw where I use to frequent and before that The Cavern a simular club to the Wheel. He the went onto Liverpool where he was responsible for the best promotions and later setting up Erics again introducing the kids to all the best in new wave and being the major reason most of the Liverpool groups of 80's formed. On returning to Manchester he again was resonsible for promoting the best in quality artists via The International and the International 2. I personally have got so much to thank Roger for, a true legend a man who did it for the music and not the money.SIMPLY THE BEST Brian Phillips- 12 For Sale
