Good topic. Interesting to see how we all react towards DJ spins then & now. I too have many I could easily bin, but there’s a flip side to soulfulness and credible recordings….the dancer. They make the hits. I think I may have been the first to discover Barnaby Bye, after being given a promo by a dear friend Tony Gioe. At the time I had just left the Casino, so any new finds of interest went to Ian Levine. He was the one who ran with it even though it started to happen on the NY disco scene. That aside, UK dancers loved it as soulful as it isn’t. Ironically, fast forward to around 8 years ago, Richard Searling and I hosted a show together every Sunday on Smooth 70’s. We had a variety of hit makers on the show from that decade and the Alessi brothers were one. Unannounced they played us an acoustic version of ‘Can’t Live This Way’. 😀 Certainly different but does have a fan base in certain quarters On a side note……Cats Eyes-Life is the worst record ever made 😂

Her work with Universal music resulted in one of their compilations reaching the number 1 spot. She is currently promoting one of the best Northern Soul club nights in the country with a strong youth following and growing scene in her home city. She loves connecting with people and gets a lot of joy from seeing others getting into Northern soul.

The single on Soul Fox was official as the label had full rights to Mirwood in 1974. They may have used the incorrect title due to lack of research, but they clearly had rights to Mirwood product. It would have been a brilliant release even for President/Jay Boy back in day. Goldmine released most of the Mirwood catalogue with Ace continuing to unearth and release label gems post 2000.

This was not the first official SoultripUSA. The one described above did not trade as such. The poster headlines his topic Soultripusa, that brand is one created by us! The first time that was used to describe the series was 2004 in Los Angeles.. 350 Attended followed by more in New Jersey/Philadelphia then Chicago/Detroit, followed by Orlando/Miami concluding in Las Vegas 2018. The events were promoted by Goldsoul in conjunction with specialists Travelbag. Over 500 artists, producers, songwriters were attracted with more than 60 Live performances.

I had the pleasure of playing songwriter Billy Vera both the Idle Few and PJ Proby versions quite a while ago. Really good song and superb by the Idle Few

Thanks for the mention. JR Bailey’s ashes by the way are on my dear friend Bobby Jay’s mantle piece. Adding a touch of trivia to the comments raised, JB Troy could be BJ switched around and Troy could refer to Jeff Troy, Bobby’s colleague at WWRL radio station. That’s my view. I will endeavour to ask BJ as I work with him at 45 Radio, where he presents America’s Greatest Hits. Both JR and Vernon were clearly go to guys to improve various sessions for busy labels such as Wand, Decca, Kapp etc.

YOUR PROVOCATIVE STATEMENT! ’The Younghearts manager (probably Booby Sanders) was a bit ruthless & used to screw the group members over money on a regular basis’ YOU HAVE NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER and have never met the guy.

At least we don’t start waffling without having some deep knowledge about the subject matter. We knew Bobby Sanders well Cease with the ‘I have no evidence’ routine, as it becomes disrespectful to the person named.

Find the allegation against the late Jerome Lenoir(Bobby Sanders) quite distasteful. Ever met him? A very nice guy who helped us tremendously at SoultripUSA in March 04 attracting many LA Soul legends including Younghearts lead Ron Preyer, another Bobby S protégée who speaks well of the man. If Alphonso Boyd(I interviewed him in 85) operated as a version of the Younghearts group, he never mentioned it. Bobby was entertaining and genuinely helpful. He got on famously with everyone present including 300 Brits.

Vel appeared live in front of British fans at SoultripUSA Las Vegas 2018. The Life lead singer performed Tell Me Why to rousing applause.

Extremely shocked hearing the sad news my friend and former recording artist LINDA LEWIS(Linda Fredericks) has passed. A UK treasure with a wonderful multi octave vocal, I first met her in 1983 after producing her sister Shirley. She took a chance and recorded ‘Class Style’ for Electricity records with me in 1984 and although a minor success in the UK, it was a European hit. Putting together her revival tour with Tony Denton she worked tirelessly to help deliver success. I remember her giving me a recording cassette of ‘Selfish One’ her first demo for Polydor in late 1965 after our late night music chat in Amsterdam. We last met at Corinne Drewery’s 50th birthday and laughed our socks off at ‘the love hate relationship’ with ‘that track’……….. What a fabulous voice! My sincere condolences to the Fredericks family. A remarkable talent and a pleasure to have known you. Rest in peace……… Linda Lewis 😢
