  1. normally post on the tune for a day thread but...a few new spins for me this weekend billy wells this heart these hands https://youtu.be/lKH0rMntYVQ
  2. good to see you again greg...some great tunes, nice to hear the vivian hill again...sorry we had to leave early but 6.30 alarms a bastard!..cant do weeknights no more..enjoy your last two weeks this side of the pond, safe flight home and see you next year!! atb dean
  3. my old stopming ground too....keep trying to make my family visits from bristol coincide with a back street do but im always djing down here on the same nights..will get up there again soon i hope as i keep telling mark every time i see him!..but i do mean it mate been to the keir hardie hall a few times in the 80s but not since, cant even remember what it was for but was in my early scootering days...first backsteet for me i think would have been the british legion, definatly did carrow road a lot and still got a couple of flyers somewhere i'll have to dig out congratulations to all involved!! dean
  4. from 60s,70s,crossover,modern,latin,beat ballads, popcorn,,rnb and now funky edged and gospel..is there actually any other soul sub genres for the scene to include? dean
  5. same here..as a youngster ;-)..first heard it about 84 on the inferno out on the floor album...was the only track i wasnt sure of at the time but also grew to like it dean
  6. we played british beat, soulful garage, popcorn some ska alongside the rnb and northern for a few years,a real mod club without the mods!..as the years went on we got more soulies from the 'scene' joining the youngsters etc as its a big city...they loved the buzz if not all the music...weve now got to a stage where we have only a couple of residents and more guests and the music is still mainly northern and rnb but more funky edged stuff than the earlier beat and ska...still loads of under played and lesser known...before i get accused of it this is not a plug...but our club has evolved and changed..mainly down to the dancers...if in a couple of years the funky edged stuff is clearing floors no doubt we will change again...but i think the 60s northern and rnb will now always be there but who knowsfor sure! but like it or not the 'northern' scene has also always evolved and changed from the wheel, torch, wigan, stafford etc to rnb ,funky and gospel of latter years...and will continue to do so...as they say evolve or die dean
  7. when we started our club 5 1/2 years back in bristol a couple of the residents (who through their choice are no longer with us) played british beat..at the beginning it was just our mates mainly scooterists, record collectors and a few soulies...as the years went on and the crowd got bigger to be honest the british beat did clear the floor on the whole and weve always had a more open minded bunch at our nights...some crackin stuff but like a lot of the funky stuff...only a small amount really into it...went to london new years eve to vava voom and the psych room was heaving all night though...but good luck with it! dean
  8. maybe not the best record but one of the rarest ...10-15k dean
  9. just seen on facebook so thought would pass it on as not seen it on here yet myself?...watch out if youre local and offered some tunes https://www.sussex.police.uk/whats-happening/latest/news-stories/2013/06/11/man-robbed-of-his-record-collection-in-crawley/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter dean
  10. i find it strange when 'northern' lovers dont want an rnb room or any played but will be ok with 70s/modern?...surley the term northern came about and describes mainly 60s soul as pete said to get away from the early/mid70s stuff?..as with any genre you an go too deep and some rnb is too rock n roll for me too but most played at northern nights i find to be more rhythm and soul than blues....case in point had a remark on facebook about rnb being shit then i posted big daddy rogers and cookie jackson and the same person loved it because it had been played at some northern venue years ago???? also on fb a remark by someone else saying they wernt going to a venue again as they like traditional northern soul..3/4 of the 3 residents playlists i would class as traditional northern..the other a bit of rnb and latin..the guest uptempo 60s soul not funk..the problem was i think it wasnt all well known wigan which this returnee didnt like..i think this is the attitude 'progressive' people dont like a couple of other points, personally i dont mind being educated..i was by greg belson the other week and no matter how long youve been into it nobody knows it all....as for handbaggers, been to a couple where there are literally handbags and stilettos on the dancefloor! one other thing before i duck back in the trench....noticed a lot of people complaining while saying they havnt been out for years despite there being many oldies nites playing what they like?... if youre not going out anyway while ofcourse you have the right to join in a discussion on a forum i find it strange why you would want to as far as the original question..i think the future will carry on being mainly oldies nights and those more like 'mod' clubs playing mainly 60s soul, rnb and a bit of latin...the few youngsters getting into it seem to like those styles as do a lot in their 40s who have still a few years left in them...while some of the funky edged stuff and gospel is great and can be mixed in to other nights i dont think theres either enough quality tunes or people into it to keep it going long term.. dean

  19. not paranoid but memoryvoid!...and like you don't wanna repeat myself too much so will admit after each slot ive got a book I scribble my set down in..only started doin it since our monthly night started, with regulars comin every month thought it would be a good idea as I was never sure what Id played don't changed my set 100% every time, have faves I cant seem to stop playing and are ones I know are well liked but always play tunes ive either just bought or have sat on the shelves for a while..changing a couple of dozen in the box each month only ever planned my set in advance the first two times I played in 89...often put up tunes on our fb event meaning to play em and don't get around to it,thats WHY I love being behind the decks..never know where its gonna go 250 records in my box and its often upto the dancefloor what ones get picked..that doesn't mean I play safe oldies allnight though..couldn't imagine playing the same 20 records every gig BORING! dean

  21. hard headed woman was a john stapleton spin at gogo children probably four years back now...can still get it cheap, picked on up about 18 months back for £30... there are a few funky edged tracks where the snare is doubled up and sounds a bit like drum and bass but none so much as this, every thing about it sounds like drum and bass to me...easier to dance ina d&b style than a soul one!
  22. i think the people who go to a venue that does not have a dancefloor and /or djs that play to it enjoy it because they are the ones that you see sitting around at venues that do have dancefloors!..dont get me wrong its upto them if they dont wanna dance...some are chatting vinyl all night..while others are maybe...dare i say it ..too old or unfit for various reasons to dance..at least to the uptempo stuff personally ive been to a few with dodgy dancefloors, none that havnt got one, that would be a pub wouldnt it ? i dont normally go back...maybe as a social if theres nothing else on...which is VERY rare!
  23. i say 60s soul ..quickly followed by 'the rarer more underground stuff' have you played this to your drum and bass mates?..not northern more funky edged but almost drum and bass! https://youtu.be/jhFA-RPN3qA dean
  24. nice one john!...dedication working in a record shop all day...doing gogo children that night getting home about 3 and then up at 630 on a sunday!....i still hadnt gone to bed! dean
