Butlins Minehead Soul Show Presented By David Gest
minehead seems to be the piss up venue for weekenders in the south west nowadays...motown,80s,ska etc all end up the same way i think.. never been a big fan of elderly soul acts so only seen a few...mary love at camber was ok..still had a good voice but other than her few northern tunes the rest was slow gospel dean parrish still has the voice and loves the northern crowd so aswell as his few tunes he does loads of others..a top showman the elgins were ok...but still not blown away to be honest....dont get me wrong fair play to any of them still healthy enuff to be doing it just doesnt do it for me vibrations at prestatyn?...will be there but a lot of their stuff is very uptempo!! dean

Record Collections - Sell Now Before The Market Drops
prices of some tunes are dropping its true there already quality tunes that are hard to sell but remember we are in a world wide recession....it mite not seem like it but one day things will get better and for a cetain ammount of time at least we will all have a bit more to spend!! its true there will be a lot of a certain age group who will be selling off their collections over the next decade but soul and vinyl collecting is not just a uk thing today...loads of youngsters all over the world are getting into this and in another decade they may have the money to buy things they cant at the moment... everything hits a peak and i cant see prices just continually going up but i do think...and hope!...there will always be a market for original vinyl.... as with antiques ,books, toys and now retro 50s-70s items...as a species we are collectors..hoarders..and romantic nostalgics for quality things from the past that can no longer be made...IMO dean

Weekly Poll - Northern Allnighters In 2013
over the year probably equals out to once a month...its the drive from bristol that gets us..nicci doesnt like me driving over about hour and a half after a nite with no sleep so most nighters, except gloucester and the odd mars bar means a stop over which makes it an expensive trip....niter v new tunes??...most soul nites turn into allnighters when we get home anyway!

What Do You Do With Your Record Collection, Play It Or Just Store It?
about 5000..in our music (dining) room...maybe 1500 of those original northern 7s...most of the rest is reggae of all types..lps,12s and sevens..not all original...a few hundred two tone mod indie and punk, couple of dozen techo, drum and bass and hip hop 12s and lps..and a couple of boxes of 60s 70s pop/rock stuff in the loft.. sold a couple thousand mainly dancehall reggae from when i was djing it in the 90s a few years back....sold a few hundred northern boots and originals over the last few years to pay for others hardly a day goes by when i dont play some tunes..normally a sunday on the couch infront of the tv after a night up playing tunes to the small hours...those nights start off soulful through reggae to...well anythings possible..even drum and bass, hip hop or techno....or dylan and the smiths but only if feeling brave and wanna wind nicci up! helps having two decks much more fun than playing off one dean

Collecting Records
been buying records since i was 10 and had them bought for me before that from the age of about 5..and even played my dads before that...only time i tried to collect all a label or band was when i was a teen into two tone and punk stuff, can remember standing in arcades bored which my latest 7" pic sleeve while my mates put their pocket money in the pacman machine ...couldnt afford much so got my first criminal record shoplifting vinyl when only a couple of norwich shops were left leaving the vinyl in the sleeves...only one the week after we were caught!!...had a good thing going making a list at school the week before...except i used to play them at home first and keep a lot of em!.... now i just buy if i like and 90% of the time stuff i can also play out...and definatley dont nick off any dealers or from shops!! got a few boxes of 70s in the loft kept becuase of nostalgia and they aint worth anything....occasionally sell from my collection but getting harder and harder and only if ive spent too much on new stuff cant ever imagine not buying and playing vinyl love it dean

Dj's Responsibility?
no disrespect to the original poster but yes weve been here before..but still i cant help but put my two pence worth in...better than going out in the warehouse its effin freezin...anyway.. 1 educate?...yes..nothin wrong with hearing a few new tunes even at a largely oldies night.. i dont believe anybody knows it all however long theyve been on the scene and those who get offended should leave their egos behind.. without people doin it with tunes like jt parker a few years back we would be missing some great unplayed sounds...aswell as those forgotten oldies some of which a lot of people havnt heard the first time 2 play to the punters?..ofcourse an hour is long enuff to suss out what the majority wanna hear and a dj should be educated himself as to what the event needs and have a plan b in his box (no not dexys although its a great tune) if what he wants to play doesnt work 3 not sure about creating a moment...many djs have for me... normally hearing awesome tunes for either the very first time or the first time in years but this is personal to the dancers and not sumfin the dj should worry about trying to do 4 bore the punters with the same set?...no but i can see why some do...some sadly are booked just to play those big oldies whether they like it or not....luckily if i book a dj for our nite they know they can play something different...and when i play a/our nite i always jot down my playlist at home and try to change it a bit next time....at the end of the day if they are having a good time the punters should be too and if the punters are bored the dj must be too ?...i know i would be!! this of course is just my opinion and not aimed at any other dj/promoter dean ps..playing some sort of set that flows and actually knowing how to use the equipment should be second nature
