Explosive Dynamiks - Whole Lotta Loving

Are C.d's On The Way Out ?
i know i came down hard on cds but even i have a use for them...great to give out at go go children and spread our tunes and get those who dont know northern hooked....and yes in the car...skipping tracks is so much easier than going back and forth with a casette!..... dean

Are C.d's On The Way Out ?
not suprised really....each to their own but i think cds are shit.....they were sold on their durability..er nope...sounds like the band are their with you..er nope, unless you live in a 32 track studio...i prefer the 'warmer' sound of vinyl anyday...easier than getting up to flip a record over..yes..until downloads came along...on top of that cover art quality has gone down since the 60s/70s cos whats the point spending money on a lp design if its too bloody small to have the disired affect, unlike a 12" sleeve...which you can buy ready made frame to stick your faves on the wall on top of that theirs the physical thing about getting something for your money and collecting which we humans love to do..nothing like a piece of black wax,cds could be data discs, games ,dvds etc i think a lot of cd sales are supermarket based by middle aged people anyway aren't they?...buying shit like rod stewart does soul...or cliff richard does soul....or some classical singer does soul or the 30 greatest ska, punk, new wave, glam, soul new romantic ,disco or whatever genre was in when you were young as i said back in the 80s when all my mates were flogging thier records..there will always be vinyl in my opinion anyway dean

News: Northern Soul - Exclusive Teaser First Look and Interview
looks good to me but then i liked soulboy with all its cheese and mistakes so what do i know...as has been said its only a bloody film a bit of entertainment....looks a bit more ruffer than soulboy which would be good but then as i understand it this trailer was made a couple of years back so hope the finished article wont be too polished dean think i may have said somewhere already the youngsters on you tube seem to be getting into the music so be good if they start getting into the scene and spreading the faith and not just keeping it

Usernames How Did You Pick Yours?
pretty obvious from my pic...i had my lammy sprayed orange with black trim and it was my 20th century toy designed in the 60s(69) but made popular in the 70s...had to be spacehopper....got it on the side panels.....put a d in on the front of the scoot (spacedhopper). ..surprising how many people dont realise for ages.... dean

Poll: Your Night Out
maybe i should have posted the majority of regular posters in my opinion are original collectors.....which would be the 1% you mention....i know lots of people who are members but hardly ever post..mainly because although they love northern with a passion and are out every week they dont really care what format it is and dont wanna get dragged into arguements because of their opinions ...there are then those dealers and big djs who very rarely post (unless about an event or sales)but are members and im sure read it most days.... dean

Poll: Your Night Out
agree with nev i dont think there would be more people spending big money on originals pushing the price up,think they would either buy cheaper more unknown originals ,which would be a good thing,or probably keep to cds as far as the poll goes...interesting bit of fun maybe but not a 100% representation of the uk northern scene as soul source is 'mainly' made up of original collectors, whether djs or not...most people i know who either dont collect vinyl or buy boots dont go on soul source...they think we are all soul snobs..cant think where they get that idea from !! dean

What Is Wrong With You Promoters ?
played in bath..was as i expected only a couple of dozen tops BUT was just a little room at the back of a pub...free entry...me (playing ovo, trying to slip some unknown things in) and the 2 residents one playing mainly handbag motown, the other classics, the expensive ones being reissues etc they are a couple who support go go children and are tryin to do a little something for bath.....bath has always been a hard nut to crack with very few locals into soul and unlike bristol the younger ones dont really seem to wanna know...with the local travellers mainly travelling to torquay and porthcawl on saturday i knew it would be quiter than last time i played...but it was a favour for some friends and i always try to play if people are nice enuff to ask me!...and a chance to give some flyers out for weston this friday and go go children too so..... dean

What Is Wrong With You Promoters ?
agree music is more important than numbers at our club we are averaging about 90 in a small club and thats about right for comfort...weve had a few nights it gets down to 50 and we still have a good night...some prefer it ,more room to dance....but any lower and we lose money...its not the reason we do it but none of us can afford to lose.......need every penny for more vinyl! dean

Is Playing A Boot At A Venue Ever Acceptable
ha!..well i actually did that at go go a few years back on inferno before i had it on sassy...it was for a good friends birthday, his fave tune and all that...but as a rule only on the 3 yankie 60s issues...as there wasnt a 60s uk issue dean

Is Playing A Boot At A Venue Ever Acceptable
im playing in bath tonite and i know its not ovo but im not going to be lazy and play a grapevine tomangoes...im gonna play my originals...its not just our taste that make us different djs its all our financial situations and thats a good thing because it means loads of brilliant cheaper tunes get heard!...and every dj SHOULD find and have his own style...simple! dean

Is Playing A Boot At A Venue Ever Acceptable
right this has been done to death but this is my take on some points raised.....quotes shortened 'pre 85 most people played boots and wasnt a prob '...well pre internet originals were still bloody hard to get so thats probably why...now theres no excuse 'people at oldies nites dont care its only rare soul fans'....well i think oldies fans would if every night they went to every dj was playing the same big tunes and i mean every night ..im sure even oldies fans would bet board...nites like the kings hall etc would not then be so special and also big recent tunes like jt parker etc would probably have not have been discovered if every dj could get away with playing a £10 jackie day or parliaments...why bother going to the states and discovering the new killers!...how long would the scene last then...if the stafford djs just played wigan boots etc 2nd issues? i think ifwe are talkin 60s and they are still 60s releases(remember most big label 7" singles had a lot long run back then, and the local/national label) then thats fine ann sexton yellow 77...if its a 70s 2nd issue ann sexton multi coulured then no same for uk releases...60s columbia fine...70s inferno's no..play the yankie if its not been released in uk in the 60s...if its not been release in the us or uk in the 60s as with a lot of kent than ofcourse thats fine these are my opinions and rules for ME ..not complicated at all...and rules that will keep this scene alive dean

What Is Wrong With You Promoters ?
be good to see you....you might not like everything you hear but you would hear something new and get off on the atmosphere.... you wouldnt get bored!!.... dean

What Is Wrong With You Promoters ?
i think again it depends where you are...we play in bristol every month and have different people every month so even if a nite opens near by and we miss a few of our regulars one month which is a shame but there are enough people for us to have a good nite ,our cost are low and we dont care if we dont make money and have never yet lost....a smaller town with less people to go round i think starting another night could stop travellers from going 50 miles up the road if something is already on and have more of an effect both financially and 'friendship' wise this is also a reason why our monthly nights dont seem to get stale as well as us playing so many genre's and all being collecters instead of dj's and not just chasing big ticket items so we have quality new tunes each month ...i'd love some of those big indemanders but could never save up for months without buying someting new!! dean

What Is Wrong With You Promoters ?
hi bearsy i'm well ,always got a mars bar with me on a nite out! ....regarding the promoters, yeah i agree there are some who dont think about or care about other nights, ive witnessed it here in the sw too but wasnt involved so not my place to say whos right or wrong....this was one of the reasons i was pleasently surprised at pete, dont get me wrong ive always known pete was a nice bloke and he got in touch with me about his dates in 2012 which was already more than anybody else but to cancel one of only a few nights out of friendship and respect is first cllass...if we had clashed he wouldn't have had to worry about losing people it would have been us who did but i'd told him if he couldnt change the date i'd live with it as he only has a few every year and we are monthly...but he still cancelled...hopefully he will still get another night and if he does ive no doubt he will do his best not to clash with the other sw promoters still think people should try and stick to either first or second saturday etc....might take a while and maybe have to miss a few but it can be done hope your skintness doesnt last too long! dean

What Is Wrong With You Promoters ?
our night go go children in bristol has been on the first saturday of the month for nearly 4 years...what if promoters with other nights local to them got together and had a specific weekend for them so they all knew where they stood... bridgewater soul nights have been running for 10 years and pete lyster has just cancelled one of his only 3 nights next year because he realised that the 7th of april is actually the first saturday and not the second and so clashes with go go children...top bloke!....especially as if we clashed it would effect us more than them...there would be more go go children regulars go to bridgewater and miss a month than the other way around IT CAN BE DONE PEOPLE dean

Is Playing A Boot At A Venue Ever Acceptable
i dont but..... what if a dj has one of only two known copies and his is styrene and not in the best nick surely its fine for him to play a carver to keep his in good nick? and he's not on the same nigt as the other original owner ...at least we get to hear the tune for years rather than for a few months(if he's a busy dj) till its f***** or not at all if he doesnt wanna risk it ? dean

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
i agree mark...ive often said its strange how a scene that is so positive and friendly when you're out can be so negative and unfriendly when on line..... dean
