Who's the songwriter? That might lead you to a member of the US RnB group. There were more than one band called by that name in the US.
  2. It was written by Mel London, who penned a few other RnB hits.
  3. Yeh, one's a rock-solid piece of driving R&B and the other one's some overplayed, over-priced funk crap...
  4. Which version are you looking for? The AGE recording is quite easily obtainable, the TAMBOO version is now very in-demand and hard to find and expensive.
  5. I think you've hit the nail on the head. A lot of 50s material was re-released in the 70s especially after the whole American Graffiti thing and labels could potentially make some money from that back then. And, as you also say, this was not ever played or collected by anyone on the soul scene until years later. In fact I first heard it and various Slim Harpo, Little Willie John, Richard Berry tunes at rocking events in the mid 80s when I had enough hair for a quiff.
  6. I agree, the font does not look right for the early 1960s. For instance, here's a discussion about this sort of wildly exciting thing regarding an Okeh 70s reissue: https://www.45cat.com/record/47291
  7. From Wikipedia - not ultra reliable but food for thought: 'Ernie Lafayette Young (label founder) died in 1977, by which time Nashboro was increasingly reissuing out of its back catalogue rather than issuing new material'
  8. Heard a great record at a nighter in the early 80s called 'Maintain Your Cool' and, bugger me, when I went to the record bar later - there it was and only 50p! Got it home and put it on...'WTF is this?' Of course, it wasn't the Volumes it was these guys, a garage band: Not a total loss as a friend of mine who was into 60s stuff of that kind bought it off me for £5....thank god.
  9. Thank you sir! Now who's going to tell the seller?
  10. If you don't mind explaining how you know that I'm sure we'd all be grateful. As I said above it doesn't look right to me, but having never seen a second pressing before, more info would be useful.
  11. Sheldon was in Chicago not Nashville.
  12. Reminds me of the time I wrote an essay whilst in the grip of two black bombers!
  13. You can't exactly tell from the picture but the vinyl looks flat whereas the original one has a dished centre and the typeface looks too 'modern'. Could be all wrong of course!
  14. A couple more.
  15. Or just looking for amusing stories. Like Tony Rounce at the 100 Club sometime the early 80s 'You lot need your legs chopped off if you won't dance to this!' Or a bloke who actually went and sat on the dance floor as some sort of protest at lack of interest.
  16. Learning about label stamps and numbering systems is a good way to start (going mad). https://www.anorakscorner.com/PressingPlantInfo.html
  17. Playing what you consider to be some great stuff to an empty floor surrounded by people talking and drinking. Do you: Carry on and just play what you want to hear Panic and start looking for sure-fire stuff in your box Get on the mic and berate the crowd for their lack of taste Burst into tears, storm off stage and vow never to DJ again or...?
  18. Can you get multiple licenses issued? I mean can more than one company issue re-releases of a certain track?
  19. It is, although it is more of a funk version of the earlier R&B track.
  20. Slowly resurrecting part of my collection so looking for: Rotations - Put a Dime on D9 (Frantic) will pay £400 vg or above La Charles McCoy - Let's Talk it Over (AMC) will pay £75 vg or above Here's hoping. Haven't had much luck finding either so far. Thanks.

Quite surprising how much vitriol is being spewed out over Brand New Faces. Great up-and-at-'em piece of girl group soul. Yes, it's messy and chaotic. What do people expect from a Northern tune - a Bach cello concerto?
  22. I once got hell for playing a 'C&W' record at a do, the guy said 'who the f**k is that country guy singing?' My reply - 'He's called Arthur Alexander'.
  23. Couple more favourites... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IaJZ5v724Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcE1J4kOO1s Nice one John, screwing up the intro. That's Fontella Bass and Tina Turner on vocals with Ike Turner on guitar BTW.
  24. It was a big thing in my home town Edinburgh. We had our own nighter - Clouds - which had a very high reputation and lots of soul fans around and some top DJs (I think 'Jolly' even played at Wigan) and I seem to recall there was a soul show or two on Radio Forth. In fact the East coast of Scotland seemed very much Northern crazy as there were also scenes in Fife, Dundee and Aberdeen (a certain Mr Darge was from Elgin of course). Later, in the 80s, when I really started getting into it, it still carried on, to a lesser but important extent, with the rise of the venues run by the Walls brothers at Thornton, Glenrothes etc which were pretty cutting edge 'newies' events in those days.
  25. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQrlOJfh7zw Superb if well known and easily available. However, I have a one-sided demo which has a much more intense sound than the issue (to my ears anyway...)
