Dom Triano was lead singer with Mandala. I have a couple of their singles on canadian Kapp which have a (blue eyed) soul sound to them. Troiano had a 12" release (We all need Love?) which George Reid used to play on his Soulville show. He later joined the James Gang and The Guess Who and as a guitarist worked with Diana Ross. Having read his bio https://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/reviews1/joearchive2.htm I've just realised after 40 years that it was George Olliver who sang lead on the Mandala records so scrub the first line of this missive.
  4. One of the best parts of the soul scene is the amount of time and energy certain individuals put into research. I appreciate it when putting together a radio show and i know from record collecting circles that it is also well regarded by non soul fans seeking info on certain labels. Well done Dave.
  5. No definitely not. The Temptations were never part of the tour. I'm sure Tony Newton was bringing out a book which covered the tour which may cast soem light on it. Dave Godin must have written something about it some where. The two shows per night was traditional package show fare going back to variety theatre. The artists got paid per the tour and given the halls accomodated a max of 2000 it was a way of persuading more people to part with a smaller sum of money rather than fewer people and a higher ticket price. I think it was bad Timing. Two years later The Stax Volt Tour was a lot busier.
  6. I think the Temptations flew in to record the TV show but did not play any live gigs. Dave Godin had advised Berry Gordy not to do a nation wide tour. According to Malcolm Cook tour manager (he also worked for Howes) only the Glasgow and London gigs sold out and the rest of the halls were empty. Georgie Fame was hauled onto the bill to boost tickets sales.
  7. Thanks for that. i did not realise I had the dates sitting on my shelf and spent about thirty minutes online trying to track them down. 8. As part of its Northern Soul Cultural strategy Wigan LCT should offer an invite to this exhibition and mount it as part of next year's dance Fusion festival. I'm sure Russ Winstanley could offer some advice.
  9. We had the radiomagnetic Christmas night out yesterday so I suppose we're lucky we got the reflections on Christmas soul show on the air. Normally the play list sits on the website but it was a casualty of the alcohol consumption Anyway the show is here https://www.radiomagnetic.com/shows/index_show.php?id=298 There are not enough Northern Soul Christmas records to fill an advert break never mind a two hour show but we do have more than enough soulful seasonal sounds from the fifties to the noughties for you to shake a sleigh bell to. We've got soul, R&B, Gospel and a dash of disco and it's a Happy Holidays from Lou and the crew. Simon, What do you need the mixmeister for?
  15. or the money. Oops There is no money in Notrthern Soul.
  16. There are very few good christmas soul soungs. My favourites include The Miracles Christmas Everyday The Jackson Five Up on The Rooftop Stevie Wondwer What Christmas means to me Clarence Carter Back Door Santa Albert King Santa Claus wants some loving Big Dee Irwin and Little Eva I wish you a merry merry christmas . I do a Christmas special every year but it's a struggle to find new stuff. the Motown comps have some good stuff, the James Brown comp is pretty good but the rest have a couple of usable tracks and a lot of filler.
  17. It's as mythical as Cunard yanks. It was also suggested that American comics were used as ballast in the fifties and sixties. What were we shipping to the states that meant they had to ballast ships on the return journey. There were warehouse clearances and US records that ended up in supermarkest and other odd sales outlets. Where did soul packs come from?

  20. Yep she's a serious jazzer and she writes as well as plays and sings. From Norman Connors to Sheena Easton and Stanleu Turrentine she's arranged, produced and played on hundreds of albums. It's a handbag classic and I love it. Her other 12's go down well in Europe and Japan. Kickin' Back for one. Have'nt You heard was another club biggie.
  21. Took me back to Glasgow School of Art and the Vickie cafe working a couple of decks supended by chains within a cube made of scaffolding. First time I had a monitor which I used to turn down as I couldn't cope with my own voice in my ear. And playing this to a crowd of enthusiastic dancers. I've got the single and that TOTP clip somewhere.
  22. Burtons, Jacksons the Tailor, Claude Alexander (The Window to Watch), The Co-op etc all had factories in the midlands making up suits that were supposedly made to measure. Every working man had a suit certainly since Victorian times. I don't know who made the Thirty Bob Suit and when it was originally advertised. There were always crazes on suit designs, three piece, double breasted baggy skinny stove pipe flared trousers. You went to a shop where you were measured, shown some fabric samples and a style book from which you picked lapel size , vent(s) , pockets: slanted, straight, patched.. How many ticket pocketsetc. The concept of a decent looking, properly fitting suit descended into farce towards the end of the sixties and ended up in big vents, wide lapels, high waisted trousers that would have put Simon Cowell to shame , three ticket pockets a side, half a dozen buttons on the cuffs. I had mine made bespoke. I've still got two of them.
  23. I enjoyed these and am putting off recording this week's reflections but here's an old one with two hours of mostly early Motown https://www.radiomagnetic.com/shows/index_show.php?id=129 Felonious
  24. https://www.radiomagnetic.com/shows/index_show.php?topic=12 Two hours of northern soul with straight off the decks of a club live sessions.
