Sons And Daughters
Frank. Glad you enjoyed it, cos that's my residency! And it would have been me DJing. I get a massive kick out of seeing a room of 400 Kids go mad for the Majestics or Don Gardner. And another 200 outside queuing to get in. With no preconceptions, no pretence, but all fun. I do it cos it reminds me how exciting soul still is. On all sides of the fence. And you get to remember how stunning and passionate tracks like 'If You Really Love Me' sound at 250 db! I'm still positive there's very few weekly clubs like it in the North. That's not me blowing my own, because it was around long before I got involved and was a punter for years before taking over DJ duties. Let me know if you're in the vicinity again (or indeed anyone else) and I'll put you on the list. So you don't have to pay the tax.

Out Of Favour Tunes
I only heard the Determinations a few weeks ago off the Kent King CD and it broke my heart in a big way. I know it's not THAT expensive. Just pure class. Anyone have one for sale? And Mikey, is that Luther Vandross the same as The Saints? I'm totally in love with the Saints record at the moment. Best thing I've heard in aaages. That vocal break where they harmonise just sends me. And the clean Telecaster arpeggio riff knocks me right out.

>Matt >I hate it when you sit on the fence. Yeah, I'm still undecided.

Motown Lp Only Tracks
Mike, I spun a track off Billy Eckstine's Prime Of My Life lp called Fantasy at the 100 Club. It quite rightly cleared the floor as I had evidently lost my mind. But I think it's just killer. Perhaps a bit..... dramatic and cabaret, but it has this kind of aura that just suspends the song in mid air then soars.... Have a listen and it might make a bit more sense.

Paul Weller New Single
I've voiced my opinions on this Woking Crass Zero on here before, but when you look at bands like The Detroit Cobras and the truly obscure R'n'B releases they cover (and brilliant stripped down versions they do) , it's evident that he knows shite all about half decent soul. It's like whenever he's approached about the greatest Soul singers ever by some magazine like Q and he spouts off saying Aretha is the greatest singer ever. It's as if his 'Super Mod' collection consists of is 'This Is Soul'. I'd be interested if anyone actually saw him at Mod/Soul do's in the 80's/90's. And apparently he can't dance for shit. What a top mod HE is. Perhaps someone could pass him Tricksters number.

Billy Woods
Damn right... I nearly died when Val played it at the Ladies night. I sold mine to Nick Brown years ago and then he spun it regularly at Scenesville. It's a killer record. Love those massive horns.

Dave Godin Obituary In Saturday's Morning Star
For anyone who's interested, I'll be dedicating tonight's radio show to Dave and the records he loved and brought to our attention. Expect lots of Motown and his favourite deep soul cuts. 10pm @ www.lsrfm.com Matty.

Two Left Feets
Wendy, I loove dancing to Move On Up. And not just cos that's the name of our club. I reckon the syncopation of the bongos makes it easier to find the rhythm.

You're close Kolla. I'm 25, but there is at least one younger on this list.

Glad it WAS an original Jamie. Like I said, I hoped my apprehension was unfounded and it appeared it was. Tho in retrospect, I still don't think I can own it. Means to much to me for me to kill it at home.

Soul claim to fame
>Maybe Butch could change his name to Neo, like in the Matrix. Or one out of that other great film, Snow White. Something like 'Happy' or 'Bashful'.

House music
John. Is that the same DFA that The Rapture recorded their dynamite electro-funk 12" 'House(sic) Of Jealous Lovers' on? Orange label with a Ligntening bolt through it? I'd love to hear some more stuff on that label.

Dance Floors That 'Made You Feel Like A King'
The Brighouse Ritz had by far and away for me the most incredible dancefloor. Flat as a pancake and no need for talc. A dream to dance on. Even in desert boots. Second to that has to be the 100 club. On a good day. When those damn jazz heads haven't been soaking it in squash beforehand. I know it's got pits all over it. I know you can feel the ridges in your soles as you fly, but man, it can't half take some hammering. The Ritz in Manchester used to be great as well about 7 years ago. It's sadly since lost its hold as the boards have started to warp. Often making you seasick as you wobble over them. Still miss that allnighter. It was great. What happened to it? Did Richard stop doing them with the arrival of the NC do? Shame if that's the case.

AMNESTY
Bok to Bach?! Fathers Angels?! I bet they spent a whole year in the confessional box after cutting that poppy slice of Dog Sh*t.

artist/title question
And the Lynn Collins is on People if that's any help. I'd visit Fopp where you can pick up a re-issue of the Think Lp for around a fiver. Bargain.

artist/title question
If you like the Lynn Collins, check out Vicki Anderson's 'No More Heartaches, No More Pain' on King. Another Jim Brown track. A murderously good record. Hard as nails and cheap as chips. Amazed the funk scene hasn't picked up on this. It's incredible. And cheap as chips. Even Ovenchips has it for a tenner!

Andy 'Ebeneezer' Smith @ Jazz cafe
Just curious if anyone paid £10 to see Andy Smith DJ 'Northern Soul' for THREE HOURS!!!! I held back on this until i knew a little more about the gig, but having seen the tracklisting for the CD he gave away, I can't believe he's charging £10 for 3 HOURS!!!! Jazz Cafe or not, I can't believe he's raping 'a mixed audience of those that used to attend Northern soul clubs along with those who may be new to the scene' for such a scandalous amount! Don't get me wrong, I don't have an issue with the music he's playing, since most of the tracks he plays are featured tracks we play up in Leeds, but TEN QUID?! For THREE HOURS?! And once a month?! You'd do better spending your money at the 100 Club. It's incredible what you can get away with if you have a pretty CD cover and a name as a dance DJ. A 'unique mix of classic Northern Soul, Motown and Stax records'? I doubt it. We've been charging the kids £4 a WEEK to listen to the same 'unique mix' for 4 hours for the last 8 years!!! For the love of the music. And not the money. What a joke. I just hope you guys that do soul clubs in London are stood outside handing them flyers for the events that really matter. Sorry to whine. It's not like me. Honest.

You still not hammering that Gene McDaniels track Ady? I bought it a week after I first heard you play it at the 100 Club. Goes down a bomb with the kids up here. GET IT OUT YOUR BOX!!! You've only played it ONCE since I've been going! It's DYNAMITE!!!!

SOUL BROS INC
Jamie, I was offered the 45 from Althria as well. I was very close to cutting a deal with her in fact. However, my instincts, right or wrong (and I hope for my cynacism I was wrong) I decided against the purchase. It sounded too good to be true. Though I hope she's laughing at me now with a handful of genuine pressings in her hand, making the fortune George deserves for singing what I consider the greatest soul vocal ever. It's no secret that this is my fave 45 ever. In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't buy the 45. Some records that you love you just shouldn't own. I think for me personally this is one of them. The charm of it's unsupressible magic never fails to slay me on a dancefloor and that's how I want it to stay...

Nathan Williams on Lime
I nearly died happy when Arthur played this in the Modern room at Cleethorpes. Pure Class. No other words to describe it. I'd have bought it myself if I had the cash. Great voice. Stunning production. Infinitely more soulful than the other big money stuff at the moment. And I haven't heard anyone else play it out.

Whats your most Prized record?
Of all the records I ever bought, I think my most special has to be a well loved, one-sided, date stamped, 1959 RCA demo of The Isley Bros - Shout (Part 2). That four part gospel intro is pure exhilaration, and although it got shamelessly murdered by that Luvverpudlian, it's still such an exciting record in its own right. It's black and pure. It's not a Northern record by a long mark. But the thought that it was from a copy like mine that people first heard it on the radio all those years ago still makes me warm inside....

ROYAL ESQUIRES
Mine's in the post as I type. From the same guy. He actually offered it me at a lower price than it went for, since I was the losing bidder on it. I only actually put the bid in as a joke since I didn't think I'd win it. (watch it not turn up!) With shipping, I paid £150 which is substancially less that I've seen it for on people's lists. I've seen it at as daft a price as £375 in the last month and if you check out what I'm sure is one of this guys last ones on ebay, it's still gonna fetch a few quid. It's not an easy record still. Not a tenth as rare as it was, but we'll never ever know the rarity of a record. As this instance has proved. It might put to sleep all those claims of one off copies of other 45's. As opposed to one KNOWN copy. To be honest, we all knew this guy had loads a while ago. I've been in contact with him about a few more of the other Prix sides, and it appears that he really has just turned up a box of the entire label. It happens and we all wish it'd dropped on us. Still, I now want to get rid of mine, since the record I bought it to trade for in the first place turned up a day after I bloody paid for it, so if anyone wants it at the price I paid for it, then they're more than welcome. Free postage. Otherwise it'll go back on ebay as buy it now. How much is it worth in the recent wake of umpteen copies? Lord knows. It's obvious people still want them. Though I suspect it'll dry up again when people want it in the future, so as much as the price may have dropped, it's likely that people won't get rid again for quite a while. Or will they? I know for a fact dealers are stocking this baby up, so it's people are anticipating it rising when the smoke has died down. Make your own minds up over it. If anyone wants mine when it arrives, unplayed, give us a bell on matt@uselessphotography.tk. It's still a molotov dancer. However much/little it's worth.

Soul Dance Classes starting
>I can see it appealing to youngsters who may be intimidated by not knowing the >"dance" and that is fair enough but to us seasoned chin strokers head nodders and >general piss taking bastards it's hilarious ;o)) I always thought it was about the music and not how you can dance. Any youngster who looks at a Northern dancefloor wouldn't, I'd have thought, be too bothered about the quality of dancing. That's not a criticism, there's tens of thousands of people who have happily enjoyed dancing in and out of time to soul records for over 20 years. And no-one has ever really commented either way. I remember sitting on the balcony at the Manchester Ritz allnighter 8 years ago for the first time and seeing the swirling throng below. It was both entrancing and exciting. And I remember it taking me over two years to learn to dance in a personal style I was comfortable with. In those two years, I never enjoyed the music any less, nor did anyone comment about my, doubtless, daft, bambi dancing style. It might be more difficult for any lurkers on here, especially the young (talking from a youngsters POV), to take their first steps to a soul event if they start to think that it's more about the dancing than the music. And that perhaps they might be ridiculed for expressing themselves in a way they feel the music sends them and by not buying into a conformist dance style. I've known some of the wildest and unorthodox dancers/soulfans show enviably more passion than others through their dancing styles. The healthily diverse mixture of young people at the NCSC last night expressed themselves in a way that was perfectly comfortable for them and this often gets misconstrued as them taking the piss. Trust me when I tell you they adore the music. I would imagine that if they decided to take the decision to want to learn to dance like the people they see flying around a dancefloor, I'd hope they'd find their own dancing idiosyncrasies.
