Never Had It So Good
Like many on here pretty much all of my adult life has been dedicated to dancing to, travelling for or collecting these wonderful records we revere so dearly. Whilst there's been some incredible tunes played in my past I genuinely believe that the quality of soul music being passed around at present is the most exciting I've listened to in 17 years. This of course is down to a hardcore of relentlessly hardworking, tastemaking DJ's but I honestly feel really grateful that I'm going through this period of soulful discoveries. Although I acknowledge that many in their own right have likely been played in venues way before my 17 years on the scene I believe the amalgamated quality of genuinely 'soulful' records that are turning up way surpass the seemingly halcyon days of the likes of Wigan etc. Thats in no way a rebuff of the fantastic records that the likes of those many big 70's & 80's clubs gave us. They're incredible and we would probably not even be here without them. But I feel we've finally reached the face of the goldmine (pardon the pun). Where these records have been hiding all my life I'm not sure but I'm glad they've shown their face. What I guess I'm trying to say is that if the quality of music continues to develop in the way it does we're all in for one hell of a ride! Thanks to all who have stayed at it with the shovels and dusty faces. The future looks brighter..

Best Soul Lp Ever From The 60Ts
Yeah you're right, I missed the title. Still the best soul albums though. ;)

Best Soul Lp Ever From The 60Ts
To be fair nearly every single off it was released in the 60's!

Todays Cheapies, Tomorrows Big Money Records
Anyone wondering about the potential quality of unmined 70's soul records should come and pop down this month's 100 Club. If you're a connoisseur of that period one of the DJ's will very likely blow you away. I agree with Russ that despite our heritage being entrenched in the 60's sound, there's an incredible scope for soulful 70's and 80's music. Once we've gotten to the point where a record from 1980 has become a favoured and regular spin (I'm looking at you here, Rideout) there's not really any turning back. We'd be naïve to think that we should go through the whole Carstairs/Mecca palava again because we came out the other side in a much better place. True fans of soulful music will continue to cherish soulful records irrespective of the year. At Burnley the other night I was discussing this with Rich Bergman who mentioned that it's almost as if you have to be an apologist for appreciating music that people went to pains to produce properly.

Best Soul Lp Ever From The 60Ts
Can't imagine any LP being more perfectly complete than... Jackie Wilson - Beautiful Day - As a massive Jackie fan I'm sad he died at this point cos he was starting to make the best albums he ever had. Every track a banger. The definitive Sunday morning soundtrack. Garland Green - Jealous Kind Of Fella - A million quids worth of quality on one LP. Ruby & Romantics - Best Of - The superlative masterclass in world class arrangement and production, dripping with female emotion. Lovelites - With Love From... - Patti and the girls nail every single one.

Curator For Soul Nights/allnighters
When someone asks you to book your favourite DJ's, for your favourite night, anyone would be a fool not to oblige. It's a bold/stupid (delete as appropriate) move by Ady but a very brave one. The club has always, in my eyes as a regular, been at the forefront of soul. Due in no small part to Ady's landmark discoveries and Butch's prominence in finding incredible records no-one cared for. Or has. Fundamentally, it comes down to taste. No one person's taste is better than anyone else's, but the 100 Club has an inherent 'sound' unlike almost any other. The chance to add to that is an exciting one. The DJ's I've been lucky enough to pick are people who have phenomenal taste in music. Whether you know them or not is irrelevant, but I've chosen on their propensity to dig out a tune dripping with soul, irrespective of the vintage or tempo. It would be remiss of me to think that both DJ's would be to everyone's taste but it's a risk you take. There's nothing like courting a bit of controversy. I'm hoping there will be records played that not one of us knows but trust that they will add to our growing list of favourites. Such has always been the ethos of the niter. It seems to have piqued some interest and I think that was Ady's wish all along. Look forward to seeing some of you there for another soulful session in the basement.

The Best Unreleased Soul?
And yes, it IS good that these are both owned exclusively and neither available on mp3. My answer to anyone who counters with that 'everybody should be able to appreciate it' nonsense is that everybody CAN hear it. If they can be bothered to get off their arse.
-
The Best Unreleased Soul?
Chalky you're right actually, I'm splitting hairs there. But I'll take both. The Inspirations - Gotta Find A New Love United 4 - You Need Love
-
The Best Unreleased Soul?
Unlikely Andrea. It's a closely guarded acetate. Go see Butch and ask him if you can witness its glory.

The Best Unreleased Soul?
In no particular order, we've only really two blokes to thank for these. And they really are my favourites of all time. Martha Jean Love - Both sides (actually this IS in order. Old Time Lover. Best female record ever made for me) United Four - Gotta Find A New Love Carla Thomas - Ill Never Stop.. Peggy Gaines- When The Boy That You Love George Soule - Midnight Affair Make that 4 blokes: Deon Jackson - Someday The Sun Will Shine.
-
Willie Williams - Name It - Rca Demo
Right good tune. Ex condition. Thirty squid. Plus two more squids for stamps an that.
-
Chris Clark - Do I... Auction
I love the fact that this record has sprouted so much phenomenal knowledge from a hive of incredible minds. Pretty awesome really. This version is much better than the Frank Wilson version IMHO. I'll stick to my £10 boot I got from Pete S years ago. ;)

Moments - Nine Times
I've got a demo and an issue of this, it's one of my fave 70's records ever. The demo is the same design as the two tone blue (but white obviously), so I would expect that it was the earlier press?

Edwin Starr - Time - Gordy (Demo Preffered)
Good call, Aaron. The flip is simply wonderful...

Which Northern Track You Dislike The Most
Yeah, figures.... It's not even a good house record! I wish someone would put a quality niter on there. With people playing real records. Or just, in this case, records. Also, as an aside it's interesting what people have chosen as their least favorite sounds. I'll be honest and say that I'll never be able to connect on an emotional level with someone who thinks Pyramid by Soul Bros Inc. is dross.

Has Sandy Golden On Masterpiece Been Booted?
There's nothing really out of the ordinary about that 'synth' sound. It actually sounds like a weak reedy flute. The fact that its so low in the mix and that it only really features in the first half of the record makes it almost inconceivable that it was a 70's overdub. It sounds '60's to me, though we'll only ever know from one source. Either way. I hope it is real for whoever owns it. It's truly one of the most incredible records ever made. That tuba bass line! The vocal is sublime. The lyrics as beautiful and heartfelt as 'Make Sure'. Records don't really get anymore soulful than this.

Wanda Mcdaniel And The Ultimate Choice-Gangster Boy (Appleray)
But Roburt, why would you want to own it if you can already download it and listen to it at will?

Company Sleeves Directory
Someone should really do a book about this. If they haven't already. It's in a position to be a definitive subject. Has worth in lots of different spheres, soul fans, collectors and designers. To be honest it would be the only design reference any graphics student would ever need.
