Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
Not sure how qualified I am to comment on this since we looked at each other in horror after 40 mins and walked out in shock. But i'll relate my experience with it as honestly as I can. This film has without doubt the worst script I've ever seen. The actors had no chance to shine against such dreadfully uncomfortable phrasing and Martin Compston's character seemed way overacted. I've seen homemade, no-budget, fanboy Sci-Fi films with more pizazz and attention. I really felt for the actors since there appeared to be so little room to add any realism in such a donkey of a script. It was painfully British looking. And not in a good way. This Is England is the right way to make a British film. Stark and crisp. Soulboy plumped instead for cheap shooting (from bizarre angles) with not even a glimmer of style or substance. It looked shallow, like no extras wanted to be part of it. I wasn't expecting Ben Hur, but I'm sure there were people on the streets in 1974. Whoever did the research needs to go back to Manship's Price guide. Was I the only one to see that cringingly inaccurate UK Cameo Parkway 'white label' get stomped on by the overzealous 'baddie'? It was shocking and even my girlfriend who has no interest in records looked at me with an expression of bewilderment. That's only a minor gripe but one that highlights the fact that using soul as a focus was just a cheap (and ill-advised) shot at trying to sell a bad plot. By someone with no interest in the subject matter whatsoever. I'm glad I didn't stay for the 'dance-off'. I'd have asked for my money back. And I got in for free! All money they were gifted appeared to have been spent on an admittedly breathtaking recreation of the front of the Casino. That and paying umpteen digital artists to hand ink the This England footage they bought after their inevitable fiasco with filming in Stoke. Terrible. This film simply didn't need to be made. There are better romantic comedies and much richer ways of interacting with our cultural heritage. As coming of age films go, it might as well have taken one look at Quad' and admitted defeat. I find it alarming that the Arts Council are funding rubbish like this. I'd rate it a 4. And I'm feeling generous. Soulboy 'Retro' hoodie anyone? Not even Plan B is interested........

The Inspirations - Gotta Find A New Love - Benn X
Butch has been playing the acetate of this for years. I usually hound him for it at the 100 Club. First heard it on the boot in Goldmine in Manchester. Thought I'd discovered something amazing. Till Tom told me it was a cut from an acetate. Still one of my fave Butch spins.

Afro Blues Quintet +1
Personally I thought it was shit! A terrible version of The LaSalles & Stevie Wonder. I gave mine away very recently. Wish I'd asked for some bucks for it now!! Sorry dude.

Claudette Sings... Shop Around
Ey up. So I've just actually listened to The Miracles' 'Shop Around' on my Tamla Special 1 LP cos since I've got it on London presumed it was the same. Eh? What's this? Claudette on vocals?! And such a better harder R&nB tinged mix. It's neither the local or general release. Can someone shed some light on when this was recorded (obviously between '60 & '61) and presumably why it never made it's way onto anything else? Though perhaps it did cos I haven't got the first album. Any info would be gratefully received. Cheers. Matty.

Joe Bataan "subway Joe"
Cheers for that Ol. I love the guitarwork in it. Superb.

Diana Ross And The Supremes - "a Breath Taking Guy"
Check out the flip to The Velvelettes VIP issue of Needle In A Haystack. It's called 'Should I Tell Him'. Beautiful.

Joe Bataan "subway Joe"
Shame no-one has replied to this yet. Joe's back catalogue is awesome and happens to be the possessor of one of my favourite voices. Check out the Subway Joe LP cos it's got Magic Rose and Special Girl. Personally my all time Bataan track is Gypsy Woman. The flip is killer too! Ordinary Guy, Too Much Lovin' and his superb version of Under The Streetlamp cement him as probably the best latin artist out of New York. And if you get the opportunity to see him do go, cos his voice still has the same passion as those early Fania recordings. An incredible performer to boot....

Ever Had Someone Refuse To Sell You 45's?
I remember about 8 years ago being at the Ritz allnighter and Anna saw a copy of Cashin' In in Henry Atkinson's box. It was £20 (when it WAS £20!). We scraped together our cash and literally had £19.50. Which meant, as usually was the case, missing breakfast. He told us he wouldn't sell it to her. A 20 year old female soulfan. 50p short. I told him he was a tight fucker and have never locked eyes with him since. I mirror your sentiment Joe. A right miserable cnut. I hope he's a pound short one day for live saving drugs.

One For The Girls Only
We've already agreed that this is our engagement present to ourselves should we ever look to get married.... She's currently saving up... But you've gotta agree that few records exude as much emotion, sentiment and passion as Gladys' 'No-one Could Love You More'.

Rnb Is Dead
This is the funniest (and possibly most misguided) post I might ever have read on this forum. Do you have 'SOUL MUG' tattooed on your forehead?

Patti Drew- Fever 7" Promo
Looks like the ones that Epic did for their CD releases. They used to press a few for record shops and stuff. So this is probably the same kind of thing. Epic did a Jimmy Frazier and Tamangoes double sider. That I bizarrely sold on ebay for £90!! Go figure. So ebay it I reckon.

More Ebay Madness
I bet Ady's glad I sent him his copy of Hannibal back that he mistakenly sent me for free! HAHA! Could be the 'comp effect'? Christ i think I 'gave' my Trade Martin away for the £20 it used to be seen EVERYWHERE!

The Salt & Pepper Story
Hey Steve & Tony I can only thank you both for being part of what has truly become one of my favourite records of all time, even in the short time I've been aware of it. I remember approaching the DJ the first time I ever heard 'Man Of My Word'. My only regret is that I'll never own a copy, but everyone I've ever played it to has been blown away by the track. It is as near perfect a soul record as they come. Simple, laid back groove, gritty vocals, great sax hook. What's not to like?! Such superlative records are very few and far between. It's a shame you never cut more since I'd love to hear what the rest of your repertoire was like!! Much thanks. Matt.

Chosen Few. Cheap?
Chosen Few - Birth Of A Playboy - Maple WD VG++ (the very same copy once spun by Rocky Balboa in the cinematic classic Rocky 4*, you know, the good one. I'll try and include a pic when posting) Plays super. £70. Seemingly 20 quid cheaper than everywhere else. Cheers. Matty. *this claim cannot be verified.

Lullaby N/soul
My fave time at the 100 Club is the last hour usually. Records like Eddie Hughes, Flash McKinley or Annabelle Fox have a passion that a lot/most of uptempo records will never exhibit for me. Songs like Walter Jackson - Uphill Climb and Roy Hamilton/Lou Johnson - The Panic Is On have such a dramatic and impassioned feel that, personally, they completely outshine most uptempo records and I relish hearing them out. Though I do know I'm very much in the minority. But for me that's what soul was always about.

Labrenda Ben - The Chaperone
Anyone got a copy of this on Gordy? Decent nick preferably. Cheers... Matty.

Digging In San Francisco
No worries Paul, I always referred to her as 'Mama' like everyone else who came into the shop. Don't think I actually knew her real name!! It could even be Geri? But cheers for clearing that up. Does that mean she's still about? I do hope so...

Digging In San Francisco
Aw that's such a shame to hear about Glynn. The last time I was there she was playing poker with all the local boys and winning a fortune by the sounds of it. Spent most of her day making tapes for folks for a small price. Bless her. Make sure you put a full day aside to look round cos it's pretty intense when you start. Rooky's was/is always my favourite record store. So friendly and you can literally sit in there all day and play sides to your heart's content. A bit like an American version of Beatin' Rhythm. Super cheap LP's and I'm sure inflation has taken its toll but it was 3 for $5 on ALL front of shop 45's. A mint Showmen 'Wrong Girl' was in the 'expensive' box at the time for $30. Also put space in the diary for Saturn records in Oakland because they had one third of the massive Oakland haul years ago. Last time we went we were picking up mad stuff that they'd hardly sorted for $4/5. Not least a signed copy of the Buddy Rich live lp (the Beat Goes On cut) for $5! There's an amazing LP basement in the Mission though i'd never be able to find it again. Don't go if you're even slightly portly though. To get to the back of the basement past the pillars is a real push for even Victoria Beckham! Have fun. It's a beautiful place... M

Bidding Has Begun On Frank Wilson
Personally I'd save my money and spend it on Francis' TNJ's. Which is a far more soulful record. I've been caning this on my ipod recently. It's amazing. Only found out today what it was.... Superness. Keep it!

Weird Deena Johnson Cover
I'd had this on Julmar for years before I ever heard the Deena Johnson version. I do prefer the Lundy version but can attest that the sound quality is appalling. Would love to hear the alternate flip if anyone's got it?

Ernestine Anderson Sue Lp
If mine wasn't signed you could have had mine sorry....
-
Ernestine Anderson Sue Lp
I got a mint signed copy years ago from a little record store in San Francisco for $10. Apart from KAEOL, which is of course ace, the rest is just run of the mill jazz really... Shame cos I love her voice.

Bbc4 Motown Night - Legends The Motown Invasion
I had the same thought. Although I never knew him during the 60's I was certian he didn't look like a devilish brick shit house back then. Though I've just googled some pictures of him from the wheel and it looks a lot more similar to that chap than I thought. Still not certain it is though.
