News and listing of a forthcoming cd release by your man.
CHUCK JACKSON: MOTOWN ANTHOLOGY (2-CD)
Enjoying the luxury of three albums (where many label mates did not get any) resulted in "Chuck Jackson Arrives", "Going Back To Chuck Jackson" and the VIP released "Teardrops Keep Falling On My Heart" in 1970. All three have gone on to become collectors items with fans all over the world fetching high prices on internet auction sites and in specialist used vinyl shops. Now for the very first time, anywhere in the world these three albums come together on one double CD set celebrating the time the soul star spent with the Gordy empire, in addition there are non-album 45's and a selection of never before heard sides.

Soulsville Leeds - Important Info

Important news from the soulsville duo on their event in Leeds concerning the Oct 7th event and possibly future events as well. Read more for full info Hi folks, We've been having one or two problems behind the scenes with the licencing at Baby Jupiter. The upshot is that the October 7th night will only run until 11:30pm, not the usual 2:00am. Unfortunately we've had to let Gareth Sweeney down again (For the third time!!), and he'll be with us in the new year. Sorry Gareth! Pat&John are both away with family and work commitments respectively. So anyone making the trip will have to make do with Myself, Rich Buckley and a Mr Mark Bicknell. We're gonna get started a bit earlier to make it a bit of a night, and would ask anyone who's coming to get there that little bit earlier. The 29th of October sees Soulsville's 2nd Anniversary. Again, we may be affected by the licence problems. If that is the case, then the All-Dayer will start at 11:30am and finish at 11:30pm. If the matter is resolved, it'll be 2:00pm start and 2:00am finish as advertised. There is NO event in November, and December is still under discussion. Sorry for any inconvenience, but sometimes things happen over which we have no control. If anyone needs any further info, please do not hesitate to contact either me or Rich. Cheers, Jamie 07739 917972 jamien1@btinternet.com Rich 07799 846629 richard.buckley@granadamedia.com

Let The Good Times Roll: Full Rhythm & Blues radio series available

Legendary soul-singer Jerry Butler hosts Let The Good Times Roll, a fabulous 13-part series that chronicles Rhythm&Blues, from its roots in 1940s to the politically charged Soul Era of the 1960s. Their fascinating stories and memorable songs are among many that the series illuminates, drawing from archival sound and over 300 interviews with industry execs, music promoters, disc jockeys, songwriters, fans, political leaders, historians, and the artists themselves. Along with the extensive info/listing of each show, think fair to say that if haven't been there yet it has to be a worthwhile trip Originally distributed through satellite by PRi on Tuesdays, December 30, 2003 - June 22, 2004. Full 26 shows avail to listen on line The producers a/q session tells you more on what they are about Q: There have been many music documentaries on radio and TV in recent years. What did you want to do differently with "Let The Good Times Roll?" A: Well, most importantly, "Let the Good Times Roll" is the first major, multi-part documentary series devoted to rhythm and blues. One of its goals is to tell the often forgotten or overlooked stories of the pioneers of the music that became rock and roll. The story of a New York arranger, producer and songwriter named Jesse Stone pretty much reflects the spirit of the series. His story is told in program three, about Atlantic Records. Stone is an unsung hero who introduced the thumping electric bass beat into R&B - it's the same beat heard in rock and roll. Yet Stone's story remains mostly overlooked. So telling about him and many others like him makes this series distinct because it profiles people and explores a topic that hadn't been fully explored before. It also tells a history from a first-person perspective. Full notes and more info can be found at the website, along with all the 20 plus shows in full here's the listing Click on the link to see the page and listen to the show. "Jumping the Blues" - A visit to an early hot spot of rhythm and blues, Los Angeles of the 1940s, and a profile of Louis Jordan, "The Father of R&B." "Singing on the Corner" - Profiles the best-loved doo wop groups of the 1950s, including The Orioles, The Flamingos, and The Cadillacs. "The Atlantic Sound" - A mad scheme to launch a record company in a tiny New York hotel suite grows into one of R&B's most influential labels. "Walkin' to New Orleans" - From Fats Domino to Little Richard, the sound of New Orleans sweeps the nation. "Honkers, Bar Walkers and Screamers" - Wild saxophonists and their outrageous shows stirred up crowds coast-to-coast. "Bold, Bawdy, and Banned" - Salacious song lyrics get the music banned on jukeboxes and the airwaves. "The Jet Pilots of Jive" - Jive-talking disc jockeys play songs for a price - until they get caught. "Roadhouse Blues" - On the road with rhythm and blues artists during the segregationist days of Jim Crow. "Going to Chicago" - A stop in the Windy City, which produced stars of blues and soul from Muddy Waters to Curtis Mayfield. "Sweet Soul Music" - Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin drew upon their Gospel roots to build the foundation for 1960s soul music. "Dancing in the Street" - A look behind-the-scenes at Detroit's legendary record label. "Soul Sisters" - Rhythm and blues from a female perspective, from blues shouter Big Mama Thornton to the Girl Groups of the 1960s. "Our Day Will Come" - Music in the Civil Rights movement. "Kings of the Strings" - The guitar in rhythm and blues from T-Bone Walker to the King of the Blues, B.B. King. "Beale Street Blues" - Memphis produced the first stars of rhythm and blues, including Ike Turner, Rufus Thomas and Howlin' Wolf. "R&B in Black and White" - Rhythm and blues artists cross the color line of the segregated television airwaves of the 1950s and early '60s. "The Magic of Muscle Shoals" - A small cotton-farming town in Alabama produces some of the most soulful records of the 1960s and Seventies. "Profits and Pride" - The story of pioneering African-American record company owners before Motown. "R&B Goes Country" - The roots of country music are both white and black, and artists from Ray Charles to Aaron Neville incorporate its sounds into their music. "The Pillars of Soul" - Jackie Wilson, Little Willie John and Faye Adams were some of the first stars who left their mark on soul music. "Boogie Woogie Blues" - Boogie woogie pianists laid down the rhythmic foundation for rhythm and blues, including Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. "Southern Fried Soul" - Many of the best soul singers hail from south of the Mason-Dixon line, from Irma Thomas to Al Green. "The Poets of the Blues" - We'll tell the stories behind some of the best-loved songs of rhythm and blues, and the songwriters who composed them. "The Stax Story" - With a studio set in an abandoned movie house, this Memphis record company rivaled Motown and produced a distinctive brand of gritty soul. "Soul Serenaders" - Soul groups of the 1970s created some of the era's most memorable sounds, from Gladys Knight&The Pips to The Dells. "Philly Soul" - The City of Brotherly Love fashioned a lush soulful sound whose artists include The O'Jays and The Delfonics. legendary soul-singer Jerry Butler hosts Let The Good Times Roll, a fabulous 13-part series that chronicles Rhythm&Blues, from its roots in 1940s to the politically charged Soul Era of the 1960s. Their fascinating stories and memorable songs are among many that the series illuminates, drawing from archival sound and over 300 interviews with industry execs, music promoters, disc jockeys, songwriters, fans, political leaders, historians, and the artists themselves. 3rd September 2005 Groovy Grooves at the Top Deck Club, Huddersfield.

My other half, Shirley, did a review of our first night at the Top Deck Club in Huddersfield last Saturday so thought I'd post it up, totally unbiased of course.
Cheers,
Colin.
3rd September 2005 Groovy Grooves at the Top Deck Club, Huddersfield.
It was the 3rd of September, that day I.ll always remember …“cos that was the day we started our new soul night. ;-))) Guy & Col had decided to start their latest foray into the fickle world of soul night promoting following the success of the …"Real Wigan soul night" held after the last night of the play …"Once upon a time in Wigan" back in April. The music policy was to be on the same lines as venues Col had previously promoted just simply northern soul music with a capital N & a capital S. It was to be a venue where astute soulies could come along to hear audacious DJs earning their fee by rummaging in their boxes and playing something a bit different, something new, the previously played mid-tempo toons that were dismissed twenty years ago but are the hidden gems of today. So we knew the Top Deck Club was just the right size for the kind of forward thinking, discerning soulie prepared to travel to get their fix of …"sweet soul music" ;-))
With adequate parking in the surrounding streets, the club is across the road from the bus station and relatively close to the railway station. It's far enough away from the town centre Saturday night pub crawl all pros so far now for the only con the room itself is at the top of two flights of stairs but even this con depends on how fit you are; Karen, Eileen, Bev, my lips are sealed and for an amazingly small fee I will destroy the CCTV tape I bought from the club l;-))))) (funny how its just the ladies, I myself had no problem with the stairs ;-)) The room itself is on the bijou side and the dance floor although small is beautifully formed, with four mirrored pillars surrounding it; so thereÃ's no need to be half cut up before making that first tentative move on to the floor as the mirrors give the illusion that there are at least four other dancers on the floor with you;-)))))
So back to the night how did it go, well just about as good as it could, a great atmosphere, a full room, cheap beer, dance floor action, great toons played by DJs whom had the presence of mind to play to think about what this travelling crowd of soulies had paid to hear consistent good quality Northern Soul.

Needless to say he did play a great set many of which were unknown to me.
All in all great music appreciated by a great crowd, next one is Saturday 1st October followed by Saturday 3rd December so come along to the Top Deck Club for some Groovy Grooves.
Soulfully yours,
Shirley.

Soul Auctions - a reaction to the New Orleans disaster

Just to let you know ...

There are two auctions currently running to try and raise money for the city that produced so much music we all love. One is being run on http://www.soulstrut.com and another on the http://www.fryer-mantis.co.uk board.

The rules are collectors dig out a record, offer it up to the community of collectors and whatever $$ is raised finds its way to the needy.

The www.soulstrut.com auction has raised over 20,000$ in the past week, and the www.fryer-mantis.co.uk auction, though only two days old, is going great guns too. All kinds of records, studio tapes, acetates, issues, some NOLA some not, are on offer.

The www.fryer-mantis.co.uk board money is going to an artists and musicians' fund, the www.soulstrut.com auction is going more towards more general relief. Both can be seen in action here ...

Lookback Monkey Friday 26 Aug 2005

Drunken Monkey - Friday 26 August

Started as a just quick off the cuff view and thanks on last nite, expanded now to include plays, info and more to be added as recieved

Second one at the new venue Old Hall at Llandudno, so here's my usual quick lookback on it. As always its from my viewpoint involved in organising it, so always gonna be slightly different view than others.

Night was another succesfull one, good sized crowd in, good buzz got going as nite moved on, and going by feedback recieved online and out and about mostgave it a thumbs up!
After move 40 miles of event deeper into the homeland, night it self never gonna be completely like the Springfield, while run with the same original attitude and commentment, time, changes and stuff do mean the event is always gonna be evolving, as we said at begining its all about dishing out exciting quality nites of rare soul, doing things right way and will continue as long as doing it is enjoyable!

Now have right old handy team of regulars, all with own taste and styles, which when mix in usual 1 or 2 top of the tree quality guests then add the local guy get it going spot to mix, reckon have tools to dish out a right old varied mix of quality stuff.

Playlists and info hopefully from all to follow, Got some plays in and added at end, along with some misc info from some
Hartley got things going with a great put together selection of quality interesting tunes
Steve Thomas did a early spot with a mix that shows why so busy at other events, doing his usual trick of dedicating most have asked if he wants to flog to me. Andy Killock on next for a 45 min voyage of quality, some great stuff from the only non-welsh dj in line up and watch out for his plays and info as be some interesting stuff, Chico next and after Andys voyage of discovery, went for a good time oldies spot which worked great, Phil Blacknell next and as was dragged off doing organising stuff and that didnt catch that much from his or Ritchie Andrew following spot was told good stuff, main guest up next and as said on blurb it was first time appearance as a dj at Monkey for Soul Sam and a welcome return to Llandudno as well. Was a well overdue appearance by North Wales very own legendary DJ and he certainly made the most of it, dishing out a great set proving that he is on fire at the moment. After that was up to Mark Speakman to stand up and follow the man and that he did, i got knocked down by stampede for margret little. Your man me finished the nite off with last 30 mins . Nite finshed to strains of come to me softly, and that was that

Crowd wise - good to see many familar faces make journey, few random memory based dodgy name checks, the man who many call the spirit of the monkey Joe Dunlop and all wxm gang, Karl and Debbie who brought Robbo and Stevie Catto with them, The Big Lock team, believe was some Greatstone rogues that missed (blame Steve), Chester duo reappearing, Jimmy and co from other side of river, Steve and Julie, Kit, Colin, Cel, Jean all the usual local and close by soul heads that make this event possible, and all rest must have missed
Vinyl wise - fair amount of boxes, Roger Banks rapidly turning into Monkey regular vinyl vendor, Sam had some very tempting vinyl, a lot of small boxes, was happy to get a lp been after for a bit

Thanks to all the djs and if can email plays and throw in any interestiong info or stories or such sure be appreciated. Playlists, info and highlights being added as recieved at end. Thanks to the door team, Sue and Dave, the bar staff, security and manager. Thanks to all who while may not showed do support the event in many ways, spreading the word, and so on. And most importantly thanks as always to all those who parted with hard cash on the door.

End view
Myself thought well up to last one, second one here, nite still evolving after the move of location, so maybe some tweaking, but own view is that now firm in new location and can crack on with enjoying soul music!
Reckon great that have a need to mention, the amount of co-operation, help and support shown from many similar events was as always appreciated, and great to see

Next one at old hall, planned for Oct and believe it or not it this should be the start of a more frequent regular run of events at this venue
Thanks Again
Drunken Monkey Team
Mike Steve Chico

Andy Killick plays and info
a regular "guest" since early days, and has joined us on past monkey dj trips out. Banged on about him a fair bit in pre-match programme here's why......

In true monkey style, last night pushed out a newies feast!!

Six of the best were...

1. The Cliffhangers - Since You Been Away - C-Gea
First play anywhere. This chilling 60s midtempo monster has finally arrived and caused quite a stir. Set at a beautiful gliding pace, the echoing harmonies and lyrics make this an instant favoraite.
2. The Royal Imerials - My Heart is Hurting - Mellow Town
Where has this been! Once again a total unknown on a small label with a couple of other semi known releases. But wait, this is a northern soul cut of the highest quality mid-uptempo group dancer. Could this indeed be the Servicemen, certainly the arrangements and vocal suggest they just might be!
3. The Sheepherders - If Ever You Need Me - Sounds International
An incredibly obscure release on the label comes this uptempo track which is a very close comparison to The Nomads on Mogroove. Fronted by stunning vocals from Bubba Baily, with a consuming backing track that delivers seamless breaks. The thing about this track is that you hear it once and it just sticks with you!
4. Maurice Jackson - Its to Late Baby - Soulville
Yes, this is Maurice Jackson, but on a totally unrelated Soulville label it would appear! A simple yellow designed label simillar to that of the Deltours on Starville. This is a superb dead centre northern dancer that has it all. Why has it not been played before, probably rarity, but who cares its arrived now courtesy of The Monkey!
5. The Inconquerables - For Your Love - Flodavieur
From the same stable as The Antellects comes probably the rarest release on the label feauturing the Inconquerables, and a right northern belter it is. Gritty soulful lead vocalist, deep backing harmony, with a tight arrangement and the adrenaline just drips from your fingertips. There somthing about this track that sends echos of The Mello Souls to your spine, with more exposure this track could well be massive.
6. The Grey Imprint - Do You Get The Message - Clearhill
This last featured track in Andy Killicks set has received airplay from Shifty at the 100 club covered-up as Lou Pride. But with both Andy and Butch now playing it, this masterpiece could be set for the wide recognition it deserves. An unbelievable track and lyrics which really does capture the soul and feel of 60s black America. If you haven't heard this, you need to.

Part of an indulgent raresoul attack that among others included the likes of;

Saints - I'll Let You Slide - Wig Wam
Bobby Wisdom - Handwriting on The Wall - Out A Site
Eddie Daye - Guess Whos Loving You - Shrine
Celebrities - I Choose You - Boss
Deltours - Sweet and Lovely - Starville
Utopias - Girls Are Against Me - LaSalle

Soul Sam 3 top of the trees
Belitta Woods - Foolish Girl Cover
Margret Little - Love Finds A Way -Genebro
Eric Lomax - Girl you so good to me - cover

3 Interesting Sam 45s
International 4 - a recent 70s track that Sam has aquired
Dynamics - I'm a lonely man - picked up from Rob Thomas recently
Tyrone Edwards - You Did it - Detroit 45 ( later seen it listed on Olam) from Dave Thorley -Sam said shades of Ray Evans's This Time with feeling

Phil Blacknell Highlights

Glenn Dorsey-Give all your love to me-Good Records

Viola Wills-The first time-A Bem Sole Record

Stormy-I won¡ÃÆ’ct stop to cry-Twilight

Sad news: Ernie Johnson RIP An obituary

Ernie "Sweetwater" Johnson, who with Eddie Campbell performed as the 60s soul act Eddie and Ernie, died on Saturday 20th August in a hit and run incident at 16th Street and Broadway Road in his home town of Phoenix, Arizona. Teaming up with fellow Phoenix resident Edgar Campbell they became Eddie & Ernie in the early 60s and first cut 'It's A Weak Man That Cries' in 1963 for the Nightingale label, which was then picked up by Checker records. They then had a run of seminal singles on the Eastern label a subsidiary of Juggy Murray's Sue records. 'Time Waits For No One' was their only R&B hit but gave the duo the chance to play the Apollo Theatre where they knocked the audience cold. This fruitful period also produced 'I'm A Young Man', 'I'm Goin' For Myself', 'Outcast' (covered by the Animals), 'I'm Gonna Always Love You' and the Northern Soul classic 'I Can't Do It (I Just Can't Leave You)'.
They then had the great double sider 'I Believe She Will' / 'We Try Harder' released on Shazam and picked up nationally by Chess. A one off recording session with Columbia included the ballad 'Falling Tears (Indian Drums)' which came out on a single, and a terrific uptempo mover 'The Groove She Put Me In' that was unreleased until Kent licensed it for the duo's only solo CD; CDKEND 214 "Lost Friends". At this point the two singers cut solo singles for Phoenix's Artco label. Ernie's 'I Can't Stand The Pain' is now valued at ¡ò1500 and Eddie's 'Contagious Love' isn't far short of that. Back as a duo and with Hadley Murrell, their original producer, who could almost have been described as their guardian, they released two singles on LA's Revue label, including the great 'Thanks For Yesterday'. Their final single, still with Hadley, showed they could still produce wonderful performances. 'Hiding In Shadows' on the Buddah label was good enough to be featured on "Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures" series of CDs for Kent. In fact they were the only act to feature on each of the prestigous four volumes. Dave's championing of the group over the years meant he had access to some excellent material they had recorded as The Phoenix Express in 1971 and six tracks, back as the duo, cut in 1972. Most of these were featured on the 'Lost Friends' CD including the excellent ballads 'A Man To Love A Woman' and 'You Make My Life A Sunny Day'. The duo wrote most of their own material and also provided songs for acts such as Jackie Wilson, Jean Stanback, Dee Clark, Jacqueline Jones and James Carr. By the time the idea of the CD came into being, Eddie was dead (we have subsequently found out that he died in 1994 not in the 70s as stated in the sleeve notes) and Ernie was living rough in Phoenix. "Discovered" by local DJ and musicologist John Dixon, he was made aware of the appreciation of his work, in the UK in particular, and was so happy to read Dave Godin's "Treasures" sleevenotes. The subsequent financial dealings from the CD eased his plight to an extent, but he remained troubled. Always dreaming of finding another Eddie and getting his inspired act together again, his hopes were ended on a dark Phoenix street.

An article (2004) on Ernie "Sweetwater" Johnson was on AZ Buzz but seems no longer there
“I’ll need to get a ride with you,” said Ernie out of the middle of nowhere. We were waiting for his turn to sing Karaoke at the AmVet Post #15 at 7th St. and Broadway in South Phoenix Wednesday night. “I live at 13th and Pima on the west side,” he followed. “I wish I would have known you were going to need a ride, Ernie,” I said. “I have to leave early, before you sing the last time, sorry.”
Transcripts of recent interviews with Ernie "Sweetwater" Johnson can be found in the soul people section via the link below
