KIM WESTON: THE QUEEN of NORTHEREN SOUL .
Active as a performer from time to time in the U.K., Kim Weston's recorded works are understandably revered by R&B and soul music lovers a.k.a. Northern Soul the world over. In 1991 Motown released a retrospective, "Greatest Hits and Rare Classics" while Fantasy Records has reissued her original work with Stax Records. Kim Weston is touring in support of her brand new album work to be released, with famed Motown producer, Sylvia Moi.
KIM WESTON now Returns to the UK for her first tour in over a decade.
Contact For Bookings:Full Cut Bookings (001) 718 4692485 bookings@fullcutrecords.com Detroit has produced many talented entertainers, among these is Kim Weston. The word entertainer alone does not do justice to the talent that is Kim. She is an artist in every sense of the word. It is her being. It is her calling in life. Kim Weston embodies what the American Spirit is all about: freedom and vibrancy.
Her first release on the Motown family of labels, "Love Me All The Way," earned her national recognition as a powerful and dynamic songstress. Kim followed this success with a string of memorable classics, "Helpless," "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)" and her smash hit with late Marvin Gaye, "It Takes Two," written by William "Mickey" Stevenson. Later she recorded for MGM and released her definitive version of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," which was quickly adopted as the national anthem for all African-Americans of the era.
Kim Weston is a singer of songs, a vocalist for all seasons, a true soul survivor.
Some people consider an artist to be a painter or a sculptor. Kim's paint brush and chisel is her dramatic and compelling voice. Each note paints a picture. Her every verse tells a story that will stir your soul and move your very being.

Pilsley Soul

Lookback of Pisley Soul Night

The night was started ably by Mr Joel Cooper. I won't call this a
'warm-up' spot as the night was warm enough already but Joel did
himself and those present  proud, as usual, between 7 and
8pm.  He really did set the night up well and was followed by
Graham Weaver who maintained the excellent standard as the room started
to fill up slowly but surely. A few dancing already, which can't be too
bad. Graham can always be relied on to 'read 'the dancefloor and he did
this well with a great set.

The room by this time was
nicely filling and a lot of comments like 'Great when its not too
full' were made. Well this didn't last too long! The
dancefloor was full when Ian Gee took to the decks and he kept it
this way by playing an absolutely cracking spot of oldies. 9.30 pm and
the room was heaving (Fans and all doors and windows open by this time,
ensuring the surrounding area knew we were there!!)  A slight
change in tempo at 10pm when 'elder statesman' Mr Barry
Cooper  took over the reins with his trademark mix of Motown,
current top sounds and oldies - A brilliant spot and remarked upon as
such by many.  The residents at Pilsley all compliment each other
with their own distinct tastes and styles and Barrys sets always flow
beautifully. Some requests played but these were in keeping with the
general flow of music. At 11pm Sam Moore was in control and we had a
good mix of oldies, R & B and again some more current stuff. The
dancefloor was never less than full and the atmosphere was superb
throughout the night. Not just the same old music tonight thats for
sure! The last hour is never an easy spot as there is so much talent to
follow, however, the third Cooper in the trio completed the night
by playing some lesser known tunes that again didn't adversely effect
the dancefloor and a round of applause follwed many of the tunes as
people showed their appreciation. The night eventually fionished at 1am
with the room still being at least 1/2 to 3/4 full. What a brilliant
night and as Mr Nige Brown has recently said 'What a fantastic little
soul club' Well those of us who are 'regulars' can only echo that at
last night lived up to this billing amply.('Little' by the way means a
capacity of up to 200!!)

If you want to taste some of this see you in August on the 20th (and 3rd Saturday thereafter)

TOP TUNES OF THE NIGHT: (IMO)

T J Williams           Baby I need You
Jimmy Reed Jnr    I ain't going no where
Sunday                   Ain't got no problem

New Century Manchester July Nighter Cancelled

New venue for August annouced

Hi All
Once more the venue management at the CIS have done it again, they now say they no longer want us there after the last event stating that our customers did not treat their venue with respect and did not spend enough at their bar.
I had hoped I could convince them to let us hold the July event as the last one as I had printed and paid for the flyers and adverts but they told me the contract was worth spit!! So the Allnighter planned for July the 30th is now Cancelled
All is not lost we will host our August Bank Holiday All-nighter at our new home The Dnipro Ukrainian Club Smedley Lane Cheetham Hill Manchester M8 8XB this is a smaller venue with a main room which will hold 250 and a bar which will hold 70/80 and a record dealer room which will hold 20/30 so we will down size for a while but we feel will create a better atmosphere and they are due to start work on another hall on the side of the building which will hold 700 and this will be ready June next year.
The venue is 1.3 miles form the CIS but what is more important is that they want us there!!
will send out flyers and directions very soon.
'Not The Flower But The Root Soul Club' will carry on with their soul get together as normal at the Ducie Bridge just off Corporation Street July will see Kev' Shute' Johns and John Baxter behind the decks playing some quality Rare Soul. 7pm till 11pm entrance FREE
Thanks to all who have supported NCS at the CIS and we hope to see you at the New Venue on August 27th

Soultime 2006 Calendar

A first look at the forthcoming Soultime 2006 Calendar
Soultime 2006 Calendar
Have had news and sample artwork of a forthcoming Soultime 2006 Calendar, have to say at first glance it does looks rather impressive. With it described as a A3 portrait size, full colour, glossy calendar does sound tasty. Then when have a look at the samples, well rather than bore with you with  my attempts at artistic appreciation, think the best bet is to let the screen shots speak for themselves. Planned release is in September at a cost of £9.99 plus p & p.

From the team behind it
Just an update on the production of Soultime 2006 Calender, things are really starting to take shape and the final artwork is almost complete, the quality is out of this world with sharp artist and label scans throughout, it looks fantastic, this unique item will be available for September 2005 in time for ChristmasWe already have several major players connected with the Northern scene who have shown interest to endorse the project with advertising their venue, events or record business, there is space left should you be interested, but please contact us as soon as possible as we are now getting close  to final proof reads and finally going into production very soon

Lookback to Sweetsoul Friday 8th July with guest Ginger

Sweetsoul Friday 8th July special guest GINGER TAYLOR

Early start ,set up Thursday night to save time and then eagerly await the arrival of Wigan legend Ginger Taylor.
We open early on the Friday night, everything is set up and as with Soul Sam in February and Dave Rimmer in May,we are hoping for a good night in terms of numbers slight drawback is that their are 2 Accidents on the aproaches to Newark, thus making the doors and people coming through a teensy bit slow.
Jacko does first warm up spot, and plays his new buys to an ever increasing audience, Doug plays a couple of new motown tracks recently released on a Cellar full of Motown vol 2 Jez then does the first spot in full playing an excellent warm up to the man himself, Ginger arrives after travelling from his home to Newark in a little under 2 hours does the usual hello's that go with a world famous original DJ,checks the venue and with an exalting comment "This is a nice old fashioned venue, smashing Im going to enjoy playing here.
Ginger started his set at 21.30 hours a little earlier than the guest DJ would normally due but having agreed to also do a spot at Lowton at 01.00 am he had to get away and with the traffic on the A1 and M62 beset with roadworks,he needed to get away asap,we neednt have worried he went on to play a cracking spot of current monsters and classic original Wigan Casino tracks the list is as follows no labels although every one was a vinyl original

01  If this is Love                                    Precisions

Soulshaker 2 Listing and launch information

details of both release and launch   SOULSHAKER Vol.2. Real funk, soul and groovy club soundz from today's scene!
It' out now SOULSHAKER volume 2 the groove kicks compilation dedicated to the contemporary funk, soul & club scene. Listen to few tracks clicking on the titles. Get your dance-floor shoes ready as another long ride through the world’s groovy funk & soul club scene awaits you. Get started with The The Voodoo Trombone Quartet and Lemon, quintessence of London’s legendary Club Montepulciano, here dealing with an overwhelming and breathtaking cocktail latin "breakbeat" Boogaloo, followed by the similar Kelvin Stardust, the opening track of Big Boss Man’s brand new second album "Winner". Pass the hatchet baby!!! Let’s stay in the realm of groovy club soundz with Gogo Sitar by Germany’s Kahuna Kawentzmann, which already became a true underground hit thanks to the spread of 7" by Jazzman Records, the same label that publishes the flaming Sharon Jackson and her Soul Destroyers. Blow your top! Quantic is among the leading figures of the new international club scene. Don't joke with an hungry  proves that this is a top class young talent, indeed in this case helped by the voice of the legendary Spanky Wilson! Coming back is the new single by acid jazzers SMOOVE ... massive!
English band Speedometer deliver a preview taken from their second album "This is Speedometer vol.2", which states all the je ne sais quoi of these Southeast boys. "Have you got the message"?!! The best of nowadays’ mod scene is embodied by Scottish band Boogaloo Investigators, by Italy’s Link Quartet, featured with the previously unreleased song Sweet little apples, by American band Diplomats of Solid Sound and by the Nick Rossi Set, respectively dealing with Loaf and jug and with the cover of Foolkiller by Mose Allison. Sharon Jones – who only just delivered a sold out performance at Camden’s Jazz Café - certainly doesn’t need to be introduced, as she is beyond question the number one lady of soul. What condition, which already became a classic of the northern soul scene thanks to the version by Betty Lavette, is an unreleased track that, at present, has been turning only on 7". In order to remain within the classics, French band Slow Slushi Boys have no fear of comparison with Ike Turner. Just listen to their song "I can't believe what you say". And, what should we say about the hot Hammond-funk played by English band Sting Ray Davies & The Organites, a side project by Leight Gracie of Speedometer and Stoned Soul Picnic!!!???!! Wow! The supercool graphic design is by Fabio Conti...... stay tuned!!!

Last month was absolutely mega, packed! wall to wall with soul fans eager to hear something a little different.Keith Money had made the trip down from the frozen north, and boy did he rock the house. So enthusiastic was he, that he arrived to open up with me, and he more or less turned the lights out at 3.30ish, respect, to him and Sandra coming all that way and making a good night brilliant.
Hard act to follow you might think, but this month we have another Scottish legend, in the form of Kenny Burrell, its been awhile since he's been down, but he will be worth the wait, and won't disappoint, already had a sneak preview of some of the mega tunes to be played by him on the night. Enough said, hope you can make it for this one, if you've not been before introduce yourself to me , I'm the specky bloke hovering around the decks alnight...Take It Easy...Tony

Latest news and details of forthcoming Manchester Nighter   MIDDLETON CIVIC HALL JULY 16TH 2005
THE RETURN OF SOULTOWN, LIFELINE AND BACKBEAT SOUL CLUBS
As most of you know Soultown, Lifeline and Backbeat have been homeless due to the closure of Sheridan’s. On July the 16th by kind permission of promoter Geoff Richardson and Middleton Civic Hall, we will be hosting the all niter there. Lifeline and Soultown will share the main room, the same as New Years Eve
And backbeat will take there own room downstairs. Add to this the Carl Willingham suite, and I think we have an all niter that will be hard to beat. So the line up is

Record dealers are asked to book tables in advance.
We are currently in negotiation with 2 other venues for a permanent home, details of which will be hopefully announced at this night. Other promoters please take note that the 3rd sat of the month will be the night we run our events on, this night has been selected to avoid clashes with the CIS all niter[4th sat]and Crewe all niter[2nd sat].

Once again many thanks to Geoff and Bob at Middleton Civic.

Renaldo Obie Benson, 68, co-founded the famed Motown group in 1954 in Detroit. He served as the group's bass voice and in the early days handled its choreography. Outside of the Tops, Renaldo Obie Benson was best-known for writing Marvin Gaye's 1971 classic What's Going On after witnessing a scuffle between police and peace demonstrators in San Francisco.

Fellow Top Abdul Duke Fakir said Renaldo Obie Benson lived and enjoyed every minute of it. He put a smile on everyone's face, including my own.

Renaldo Obie  Benson is survived by two adult daughters, Ebony and Toby. Funeral arrangements were pending.

Early History
The Four Tops began life in 1953 (some accounts say 1954), when all of the members were attending Detroit-area high schools. Levi Stubbs and Abdul "Duke" Fakir went to Pershing, and met Northern students Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton at a friend's birthday party, where the quartet first sang together. Sensing an immediate chemistry, they began rehearsing together and dubbed themselves the Four Aims.
Payton's cousin Roquel Davis, a budding songwriter who sometimes sang with the group during its early days, helped them get an audition with Chess Records in 1956. Although Chess was more interested in Davis, who went on to become Berry Gordy's songwriting partner, they also signed the Four Aims, who became the Four Tops to avoid confusion with the Ames Brothers. The Four Tops' lone Chess single, "Kiss Me Baby," was an unequivocal flop, and the group moved on to similarly brief stints at Red Top and Riverside. They signed with Columbia in 1960 and were steered in a more upscale supper-club direction, singing jazz and pop standards. This too failed to break them, although they did tour with Billy Eckstine during this period.

In 1963, the Four Tops signed with longtime friend Berry Gordy's new label, specifically the jazz-oriented Workshop subsidiary. They completed a debut LP, to be called Breaking Through, but Gordy scrapped it and switched their style back to R&B, placing them on Motown with the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team.....

Sad News Luther Vandross

Luther Vandross, whose Dance With My Father won four Grammys in 2004, died at 1:47p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey, according to his spokesperson. Details on the exact cause of death have not been released.
"Luther Vandross had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team," read a statement released by the hospital. "As you know, Luther Vandross suffered a stroke two years ago, which he never fully recovered from.
Throughout his illness, Luther received excellent medical care and attention from his medical team. Luther was deeply touched by all the thoughts and wishes from his fans."
Vandross' publicist, Jeff O'Conner, called the death "a huge loss in the R&B industry. He was a close friend of mine and right now it's shocking," O'Conner told The Associated Press, noting that Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle and Quincy Jones had called to offer condolences.
