Outside of the Tops, Renaldo Obie Benson was best-known for writing Marvin Gaye's 1971 classic What's Going On after witnessing a scuffle between police and peace demonstrators in San Francisco.

Fellow Top Abdul Duke Fakir said Renaldo Obie Benson lived and enjoyed every minute of it. He put a smile on everyone's face, including my own.

Renaldo Obie  Benson is survived by two adult daughters, Ebony and Toby. Funeral arrangements were pending.

Early History
The Four Tops began life in 1953 (some accounts say 1954), when all of the members were attending Detroit-area high schools. Levi Stubbs and Abdul "Duke" Fakir went to Pershing, and met Northern students Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton at a friend's birthday party, where the quartet first sang together. Sensing an immediate chemistry, they began rehearsing together and dubbed themselves the Four Aims.
Payton's cousin Roquel Davis, a budding songwriter who sometimes sang with the group during its early days, helped them get an audition with Chess Records in 1956. Although Chess was more interested in Davis, who went on to become Berry Gordy's songwriting partner, they also signed the Four Aims, who became the Four Tops to avoid confusion with the Ames Brothers. The Four Tops' lone Chess single, "Kiss Me Baby," was an unequivocal flop, and the group moved on to similarly brief stints at Red Top and Riverside. They signed with Columbia in 1960 and were steered in a more upscale supper-club direction, singing jazz and pop standards. This too failed to break them, although they did tour with Billy Eckstine during this period.

In 1963, the Four Tops signed with longtime friend Berry Gordy's new label, specifically the jazz-oriented Workshop subsidiary. They completed a debut LP, to be called Breaking Through, but Gordy scrapped it and switched their style back to R&B, placing them on Motown with the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team.....

Luther Vandross, whose Dance With My Father won four Grammys in 2004, died at 1:47p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey, according to his spokesperson. Details on the exact cause of death have not been released.
"Luther Vandross had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team," read a statement released by the hospital. "As you know, Luther Vandross suffered a stroke two years ago, which he never fully recovered from.

Andy bb blog from 2005

site note- the soul source members blog feature has now been retired
most old entries will be moved across to the article system

Someone Has To Start It
Posted by Andy Bb 11 February 2005

There's not a lot more egotistical than a blog is there? Why exactly would someone want to read about someone else's exploits? Because we're all so sad we like to live our life vicariously through the eyes of someone we hardly even know except as a name and a silly image on a monitor?
Because we do know the person and want to see if we get a mention?
Because we have a genuine interest in the welfare and mental state of our fellow human beings? Or because we're nosey bastards with bugger all else to do for most of the working day. That'll be it.

This week I have mostly been eating E's so I'm more than a bit tired. After a good night down at Shake in Bethnal Green which involved 'havin a word' with some local gangsta kids (I had a 6ft 6" rockabilly standing behind me which was more than a tad reassuring as I virtually single-handedly fronted the 5ft 3" drunken emaciated child). Dancing to some 80s soul record being championed by Jo Wallace. At least I think she was championing it - she played it after all, and felt strongly enough about it to add words to the effect of "If anybody tries to tell me this isn't a fucking Soul record I'll smack em in the head" I didn't try to tell her, nor did anyone else, I did see the 6ft 6" Rockabilly make a move to the decks but I presume he was warned off before he was beaten to a bloody pulp.

Shake was followed by the usual all-night party followed by the usual knackered comedown, followed by crawling to bed and then the usual "Can you bring a box of records cos a couple of the DJs can't make it, oh and you've got half an hour to get here" dream.

Half an hour or so later we arrive, full-of-the-joys, to hear the end of a soulful seventies set at Valatone. The look of disappointment on the faces of the soulies on the floor when a Mod arrived with a box of records, coupled with my comedown, almost had me in tears. I played a couple of seventies tunes to give them some false hope before cruelly switching to the usual stuff, to be fair to them they did get up on the dancefloor a couple of times during the rest of the hour. Once to go to the bar and another time to walk over it and ask me if I had any more seventies.

Valatone was followed by the 100 club (natch) and musically it was my favourite one ever. So happy was I that I didn't even bother trying to shoo that Goth girl out of mod corner. Actually I would have done but she was a big lass who looked to be in a bit of a mood, as is the way with folk of that Gothic ilk, she did nearly crack a smile as Matt Bolton stood on the dancefloor bang in front of her with an enormous grin on his face and his arms spread out wide like the crucifixion but she didn't quite manage to crack one. Probably asked herself 'What Would Satan Do' before deciding that the most diabolical course of action was to sulk for another few hours. Besides I was hardly going to confront her without the aid of a 6ft 6" rockabilly.

The rest of the week so far has involved a soul do that I can't remember going to, a birthday bash for Rob the Gooner attended by a bunch of soulies (is there no escape?) and the onset of a heavy cold which may prevent me doing very much this weekend.

Thank God for that! I'm sure you cry. At least we won't have to read his bloody boring ramblings next week.
Well if you don't like it don't read it. What do you mean 'it's too late'?
Not my fault you read this is it?
Look just piss off or I'll set my new rockabilly mate on you.

And Here We Are Again
Posted by Andy Bb 26 February 2005

Despite being the only bloody Soul Sourcer to Blog so far I've just been told to do another one.
bear in mond it's 4am and I'm off my nuts.
We currently have my bird's favourite ever DJ Niamh Lynch round to 'sort my records out'. I don't know about you but I've NEVER had my 45s in any kind of order and she's a bit anal about records.
We're about 8 hours into the job and a couple of pills and snorts to the good. I fear my 'sell them' pile has outgrown my 'keep them' pile and I have apparently got no choice in the matter as my fiancee has ordered me to keep to less than 1000 records.
Luckily Niamh is discreet and so the ones she thinks I got for a fiver haven't been exposed.
I have to say though it's a bit of a shock when someone with more taste than you goes through your boxes. On the plus side anyone who has the previous misfortune to hear me play is now in for a better set.

I'm left with a big pile of Mod and RnB stuff for sale so if anyone wants to swap for soul stuff drop me a soul-source message.
And if anyone's got a do - get Niamh on, she's got a hell of an ear!

Come on Prestatyn!

Don't Do It
Posted by , 28 February 2005 ·

Top tip from this weekend.
If you have friends like mine make sure you turn your PC off if you're having a bit of a sessions.
Otherwise you'll come to some time during the next day and realise that you've been online and upset half the known world. All at the insistence of your so-called mates.
Also, don't let anyone else sort through your records when you're totally spaced. You'll awake to find that all your favourites are in the 'to sell' pile while your best box is full of crap.
If anyone needs some friends you can have mine.

Just The Lads?

It may be a girl thing too, but I'm totally sure it's a soul thing.
When normal people have a bit of a row with their partners it's got to be "you sleep there, I'll sleep here",
Now, for me and the moody wench I live with (with whom of course I've just had a barney) it's dead simple.
You bugger off to bed and I'll sit here with the other love of my life, my records.
On the face of it that may seem ok, but what concerns me is while the protagonist is in bed upstairs (as we speak) she's still getting all the benefit of my 'grumpy set' so as I sit here playing 'it'll never be over for me' 'all over but the crying', 'I'll be loving you' and other moody tunes REALLY loud in the hope it may wind her up, she's probably actually enjoying the quality tunes being played ostensibly to annoy her. NOT FAIR!
Do Goth couples who argue have the same luxury? I think not.
So, if there are any soul sourcers awake and reading this, do me a favour, recommend a tune that'll really REALLY p*ss her off. And in turn I'll dedicate it to you.
Nice one!
Two Loves Have I doesn't seem to be having any effect either... bugger.

The argument? It was about records, naturally

Bloody freezing today isn't it? Having an onternal struggle over wether or not I can get away with wearing a parka for Prestatyn this weekend. Having never been and considering the horror stories I've heard about
A: the heat (or definite lack of it)
and
B: The electricity meters
It looks like I'm in for a weekend spent huddled around the world's hungriest convector heater.
Any tips for keeping warm (while maintaining complete lack of libido) most gratefully received...

Your Speeling
Posted by Andy Bb 01 March 2005 ·

gets reeely badd when you're tanked dunnit.
Apologies.
Just got in from my first non-northern soul session night out for absolutely years and I have to say I'm scared. I was 'moshed' on numerous occasions and told I'm not supposed to retaliate as 'that's what they do'.
Well it may be 'what they do' but if the bloody long-haired yetis spill my pint again I shall set the dogs on the buggers.

Incidentally anyone who's open to a bit-of-the-other music wise should keep an eye out for an band called Brinksman. You heard it hear first.
Levine, if you're readin - they could make you millions!

And as I'm the only blogger so far here's a shameless plug for the Sunday Snug:-)

What better way can there be to relax at the end of a long week which includes the tail end of Prestatyn weekender and an all-nighter at the 100 club than to curl up in bed with a DVD something to smoke and a takeaway? No better way in my opinion.

But seeing as I have to get my arse out of bed and pretend to be happy and jolly while playing old records and stupid games with a group of people who couldn't give a toss if I lived or died , it would be nice if I had some company.

So please come down to the Sunday Snug. You can have a nice roast dinner, you can listen to some soul records, you might win a prize at the bingo or the quizzes, you may even witness a grown man break down and cry in front of a group of people who couldn't give a toss if he lived or died.

On a lighter note we have That Girl Lynn playing some tunes alongside Johnny Timlin and the completely unofficial and uninvited guest DJ Backdoor Kenny.

We also have Kavel tripping lightly around the tables handing out bingo cards, quiz sheets, pens, pencils and bagloads of good cheer.

Come down, it might well be fun. I feel better already!

Essential Modern Soul List goes for the forum style

A change for the respected long running modern soul discussion list
One of the longest running and respected web soul discussion lists has just changed from an email based discussion list to a forum based format. Yes Essential Modern Soul is now available in a new fresh forum style format.

Worthy of a mention on here as a fair few years ago it had a effect on this site, it  was the inspiration for the move of the soul source news list to the soul talk discussion list, which happenend after seeing ems prove that it was possible for internet soul lists to be friendly, worthwhile and enjoyable.

Anyway enough past times, a quick good luck to them on change and here's a brief word from the site on how they see themselves

to Essential Modern Soul, a free UK based open discussion forum that welcomes soul fans from all over our planet - membership is global. The forum is private and requires registration apart from the What's On section.

the topic at this corner of the world is modern soulful sounds from the seventies and on into the future... and all else inbetween...

Ron Henderson and Choice of Color Review

RON HENDERSON & CHOICE OF COLOUR

GEMINI LADY

SJCD 6001

When a new CD arrives in the house, the chances of me actually listening to it immediately are almost nil. John snaffles the said disc for the car, and that’s the last I hear of it until the weekend. However, with the Ron Henderson/Choice of Colour CD I put my foot down and insisted that I be allowed to enjoy the music too….and subsequently the “Gemini Lady” release is one that’s been on the headphones almost constantly.

A selection of very diverse and listenable tracks, many previously unreleased, that will hit the spot with lovers of seventies soul. There’s a dollop of doo-wop, a glimpse of gospel, a nugget of Neo-Northern, more than a smidgen of sweet soul (and a few gracious nods in the direction of Marvin) and much more on offer from this excellent new offering from the new Grapevine subsidiary, Soul Junction.
Not only does Ron Henderson have a very pleasing, smooth and adaptable voice, this material showcases an extremely talented songwriter, penning 14 of the 20 tracks on this album.
Many of you will already be very familiar with the opening track, Your Love – it’s a smart programming decision slotting this number on first. Whatever your favoured genre, Your Love has a broad appeal, and of course has become an extremely popular spin in both Northern and crossover rooms in recent years. One of those records that works as well on the sound system at home as it does with a dancefloor underfoot.

Don’t Take Her For Granted, with the spoken intro so beloved of it’s era, was a near hit for Ron Henderson & The Choice of Colour, promising them a rosy future in the music industry that never truly materialised. The lack of exposure that their recording suffered is a travesty. Like many of the respected artists known to the aficionados of 60’s and 70’s soul – the group were to suffer at the hands of poor distribution and business practice, an overcrowded market and unreleased recordings.

Track Three – Nobody Will Ever Take Your Love From Me is the number that seems to have been almost universally picked as “the chosen one” by the DJ’s. This has been getting regular play ever since the first copies of this were first available and is already a guaranteed floor-filler at venues such as the Orwell. An instantly catchy melody and great group harmony makes it the most obvious tune that stands out on first play.

Hooked On Your Love is also enjoying some success in the venues – although it’s not such an accomplished or complete song to Mrs Nightingale’s ears, some friends and arbiters of taste often select this bass driven number as their immediate favourite. On a more Modern tip Sunshine has all the ingredients for the making of a happy and full dance floor; perfect weekender material.

Love Is Gone is slightly more subtle than some of the other tunes, but the gentle strings and delicate orchestration that backs the vocal is right on the money and I have a feeling that this is going to be the real ‘grower’ for me.

However if I were to pick one track that I instantly adored above all others then “I’ll Be Around” ……(think something along the lines of Mercy Mercy Me, but with choppy punctuation from the horns behind it). Baby I Wanna Be Yours is another almost Marvin-esque arrangement that I will no doubt be playing on a loop – it’s gorgeous.

And finally a mention for the title track from the early 80’s – Gemini Lady, a long time Modern soul anthem (and a very collectable and pricey slab of vinyl). For those of you that know and appreciate this number – there’s far more to Ron Henderson and Choice of Colour, and it will be a more than a satisfying surprise for you.

There isn’t really a duff track on this CD – not all will make you want to fling your arms in the air or throw yourself at the dance floor, but that isn’t the beauty of these recordings – they are simply a very pleasing selection of 70’s and early 80’s soul tracks that just exude class, and are performed by a very accomplished group and lead vocalist.

As the informative sleeve notes, written by John Ridley, pronounce “This collection will do a lot to restore the morale of soul group freaks everywhere”. My sentiments exactly – and there’s a hint that there will be more where these came from. Good news indeed.

All hail the masters at work. Grapevine continues to impress me, big time, with their supremely tasteful output.

Available from www.grapevine-soul.com as well as the usual outlets.

A review of Gwen McRae feat Soulpower All-Stars

A LITTLE REVIEW OF GWEN McCRAE featuring the SOULPOWER ALL-STARS

Gwen McCrae (voc), Lars Stoermer (sax), Jörg Bücheler (tb), Johannes Uhlmann (g), Helge Adam (keys), Lars Lehmann (bass), Kristof Hinz (dr)

Gwen McCrae has certainly earned her kudos since her smash hit Rockin Chair was released in 1975.  She has performed with Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Al Green, the Temptations, the O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, the late Ray Charles, Luther Vandross and Jocelyn Brown amongst others. All this, after Columbia Records (whom she signed with in 1970) decided not to renew her recording contract in 1973!

I met Al after work at 8 and we raced up to Camden with no idea what time Gwen would be on stage.   No needs to have worried - there was plenty time for beers and at 9:15 the band "Soulpower All-stars" walked on stage signalling the imminent arrival of Gwen. They played a blinding funk instumental appropriately entitled "Soulpower" before their female MC, Drika, took to the mike to announce that the "Queen of Rare Groove" had arrived.

Gwen is 61 but there's no way she looks a day over 40. Dressed in  jeans, heels and a very sparkly dress, she looked amazing.  As she launched into 90% of Me Is You, she sounded as fresh as she did in her Columbia years.  Every note, whether low or high (and my god she went high) was hit with absolute precision.
Gwen and the band played a solid 90 minute set interspersed with banter and tease to get the crowd going.  Among the many songs they played were :-

90% of me is you
All this love that i'm giving
Keep the fire burning
Lead me on
Damn right it's good
Winners together or losers apart
For your love
It's worth the hurt
Been so long
Love without sex
Rockin' chair
Rock your baby

The performance was excellent and the crowd really got into the spirit (some of the guys a little too much!! but Gwen didn't mind - shouting back that she was too much woman for them... and we didn't doubt it for an instance).

It had been a long time since we last enjoyed a live set as much as this - the icing on the cake was getting to hear "Lead Me On" sung live and of course getting the single signed by Gwen after the show.

Ronnie Laws Every Generation Cd Release

Classic lp gets a cd outing
Smile on my face seeing this classic lp finally geting a cd release, (now wondering where my old copy is stashed)
Ronnie Laws- Every Generation
Saxophonist Ronnie Laws held high profile gigs with Quincy Jones and Earth, Wind And Fire before signing with Blue Note in 1975 where his first album Pressure Sensitive yielded the hit “Always There” which is still a staple in dance clubs around the world.

By Every Generation, his fourth album, Laws’s writing and production was getting so sophisticated and R&B-oriented, that he was moved to United Artists Records. With writing and producing partner William Jeffrey, Ronnie produced state-of-the-art R&B gems with this album, using his own band plus siblings Hubert and Eloise Laws and guests Larry Dunn, Joe Sample and Patrice Rushen.
