Russell Thompkins Jr Says Hello with New Single

RUSSELL THOMPKINS JR. RELEASES NEW SINGLE
"SAY HELLO" BY THE HIT SONGWRITING TEAM OF MELVIN STEALS, MERVIN STEALS & MCKINLEY JACKSON
Today, legendary soul singer Russell Thompkins Jr. (The Stylistics) releases the fresh song “Say Hello,” a smooth, stirring single graced with old-school charm. Produced by prominent tandem of Melvin & Mervin Steals (The Spinners’ “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”) and their business partner McKinley Jackson (arranger/producer from Detroit and along with the Steals Brothers a cowriter of “10%,” Grammy Awards 2020 “Best Dance Recording” winner) on their MoPhilly International Record label.

Presents SAY HELLO (Steals-Jackson-Steals) - Russell Thompkins Jr.
A sheen of jangly guitar, whirling keys, relaxed drums and caresses of flute and sax launches “Say Hello,” building the anticipation for when Thompkins lets loose with that famed falsetto and soothing tenor that helped sell more than a few million records.  “Say hello to the fool who has broken all the rules and now has nothing,” is his attention-grabbing opening line, setting the tone that’s powerfully relatable to anyone whose mistakes or misdeeds prompted a remarkable love to leave.  Each towering note from Thompkins, counterbalanced by backing harmonies, strikes a feeling of regret and remorse paired with some hard-earned, cautionary wisdom to be shared.

The song, currently available on www.stealsbrosclassics.com and others like Amazon, Apple, and Spotify in the coming days, is primed to spark a resurgence for the Philly native, whose lead vocals with The Stylistics in the early 1970’s led to five Billboard Top-10s, You Are Everything,” Betcha By Golly Wow,” “I’m Stone In Love With You,” “Break Up To Make UP,” and the gold-certified ballad “You Make Me Feel Brand New.”
In 1972, Russell’s iconic voiced inspired Melvin & Melvin Steals to write a song for The Stylistics, drive to Philadelphia and present it to Thom Bell.  On the way out of Bell’s office, Mervin abruptly returned to Bell’s piano, sat down and played “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” while Melvin sang the lyrics.  Afterwards Bell told them to put it on the reel-to-reel tape with the first song they presented.  Whereas The Stylistics did not record either one, The Spinners did record the second tune.
The Spinners’ smash hit would not only achieve diamond-selling status (10 million copies), but also spurred a 50-year quest by the brothers to get Russell’s timeless voice on one or more of their compositions.  Together at last with a beautifully orchestrated track by the Motor City’s gifted and talented arranger/producer McKinley Jackson, all parties involved are delighted to have produced a melodious song with a MoPhilly flair.  So, say hello to SAY HELLO, a song poised to make you sing and sway along, awash in its alluring rhythms and heartfelt emotions

The Martiniques

The Martiniques a short lived three 45 group from Detroit and if some believe LA.
Detroit has produced many wonderful obscure acts who recorded a few 45s (sometimes less) and then disappeared with very little known about them. The Martiniques were one such group and until recently nothing was known, just assumptions and myths. There was also confusion over the various recordings and doubts they were the same group, Danceland and Me-O for instance.
Thanks to Andy Alonzo one of the members, any doubts were dispelled.

The owner and manager of the Martiniques was Thurman Hollis and The Martiniques were Bobby Martin (deceased), Hershel Hunter (deceased) Robert Walker (deceased) Buford (Fab) Glanton. Bobby Martin would be involved in a nasty car accident which left him unable to perform and he was replaced by Andy Alonzo, this was in 1961. Robert Banks would also leave the group and be replaced by Flecher Sawyer.
Bobby Martin would later recover and rejoin the group replacing I believe Flecher Sawyer, Buford would leave and the group and they would remain a trio.

The group would record two 45s for Morris Kaplan’s Danceland label based at 18956 Wyoming, Detroit in around 1961/2.
Tonight Is Just Another Night b/w Unknown Love (Danceland 777) was released on Danceland in February 1962, it would in April that year see a release on Morris Levy’s Roulette label (R-4423). Bobby Martin sang lead on Tonight Is Just Another Night whilst Hershel Hunter sang lead on the flip.

Broken Hearted Me b/w Everything Will Be Alright (Danceland 779) is the second release on Danceland, the exact date unknown but probably shortly after the previously mentioned release. Bobby Martin would be the featured lead vocalist)

The groups third and final release is the one that has caused so much confusion amongst collectors. Me-O was based in LA, almost certainly owned by Romeo Taylor, pulling the label name from the last three letters of his christian name. Pam-O was a sister label, Pam likely to be his wife/partner/girlfriend, just an assumption. Publishing was by Rocarmeo Music, 624 West 41st Drive, Los Angeles. Everything pointed to the group not being the Detroit one and an LA/West Coast group. However Thurman Hollis and Hershel hunter have writing credits which go some way to dispelling the doubts. The doubts were completely dispelled by group member Andy Alonzo through the Soulful Detroit forum and later Facebook.

He stated the Me-O release was recorded at Speciality in Detroit, the Danceland 45s were recorded at United Sound. The fact that Romeo Taylor’s name is all over the 45, likely owner, publishing and as producer although it is highly unlikely he had anything at all to do with the production of either side added to all the confusion.

How Romeo came about the two sides and indeed The Tootsie Rollers 45 is unclear. The Tootsie Rollers were from Ohio and Thurman Hollis was both writer and producer of their Me-O release (N1005), it is likely they arrived in the hands of Taylor through Thurman who probably knew Romeo from Ohio where Romeo is believed to have originated from before settling on the West Coast.
If you have been a long time collector or have any knowledge of Detroit music from the 60s you only have to listen to both 45s to know they were recorded there.
Lastly this article mayn't be entirely accurate but to the best of my knowledge it is as much as we know.  I have asked Andrew Alonzo for his views so if anything changes I will amend.  If anyone can add to this please comment below.
The Me-O 45 would become a huge favourite on the UK ( and now worldwide) Northern Soul scene played originally by Alan Kitchener who covered it up as the Three Jades at the time.

Northern Soul Connections #28 - The Strange case of the Imaginations - Fraternity Records

Northern Soul Connections #28
The Strange case of the Imaginations - Fraternity Records
It's time to visit another Northern Soul Connection - Ken drops in on a strange neighbourhood...
In the second half of 1967 a member of a young Dayton group went to see Tom Campbell to 'pitch' their plans, aspirations and dreams.
Tom Campbell was a radio personality at WONE and became a columnist at the Dayton Daily News. From the mid 60's to early 70's Tom ran 'Campbell's Corner' and 'Off-the-Cuff' news features giving prominence to local bands, and tit-bits on National bands, a 1 concerts, and general music gossip.
He gave the young band member a steer on who to see and what to do. By mid-November that same year, that band member, David Peoples had telephoned the Dayton News to tell them that the band had secured a first record deal with Harry Carlson's Fraternity records for Strange Neighborhood
Now my thoughts immediately turn to David Peoples on Saru (1971). But does he sound like the vocal on Strange Neighborhood? (if he was indeed the lead vocal on Strange Neigborhood) and ...

Dean Chalkley - New Perspectives

Hello everyone, I just thought you might like to see my new film from the New Perspectives project.
On 3rd and 4th August 2021, 6 musicians came together for the first time, the aim was to create an original piece of music in a short period of time. This film reflects the two day writing and recording session, elements of the subsequent mixing and mastering at Durham Sound Studios and The Exchange, together with vignettes of the musicians filmed around London.
The musicians are Amané Suganami, Andre Laville, Kitty Liv Durham, Lewis Durham, Nick Corbin and Solomon Douglas. They named the collective Phono 48 and entitled their composition ‘So Pure’.
I presented an exhibition of photography and screened this film over a 10 day period at the Museum of Youth Culture in Shaftesbury Avenue London between the 17th -27th Feb.
To accompany the exhibition I released a Journal publication too, like the 12" single available through the Big AC website.

Bootlegger: The Good, The Bad and the Tasty - Paperback

Published today a 'straight-talking no-holds-barred autobiography' from one of the more enjoyable twitter accounts to follow Karl Phillips aka Bootlegger or The Captain, details follows..,,

Karl Phillips is just one of the lads – roofer by day, pilsner drinker by night. But as Bootlegger, he’s scored hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube with his hilarious matchday vlogs and keeps a huge number of followers on social media hooked with his humorous musings on life, work, the Flamethrower and his beloved Wrexham AFC. He even has a beer named after him – Wrexham Lager’s iconic Bootlegger 1974 Pilsner, which has made its way onto the shelves of major supermarkets.
From tough beginnings with teenage parents to a string of jobs in local factories, whether smearing butter on his headmaster’s office window or getting a round of golf in during his shift as a street-cleaner, duckin' around shooting videos in football grounds and pubs across the UK or slightly overdoing it in holiday spots around the world, or in the throes of any of the other hilariously random antics described here, the Captain doesn’t take himself too seriously and is mellowing with age, like a fine pilsner!

Out Now! The Sensations and The New Loves - MD Records 117|118

Sensations - Blinded By Pride - I Found A Love - MD117

The New Sensations as they started to bill themselves – before dropping the word New - formed in Detroit, Michigan and comprised of Jack Weiner, Gregory Glazer, Richard Berk and Lawrence Bliss. The group all attended Mumford High School and were heavily influenced by early street corner, doo-wop harmonies Gregory Glazer, the lead vocalist of the group auditioned for Motown at the age of 13. He not only sang in front of Berry Gordy and Stevie Wonder but was also offered a recording contract with Motown. A contract that his mother stopped him from taking up as she did not think that the music business was the right career for a young Jewish boy, especially her son. Despite this Greg continued his fascination with music, often sneaking into concerts and rehearsals, to see those who would become his influences, the likes of the Dixie Hummingbirds and Ray Charles.

Like all groups, The Sensations were desperate to have a vinyl release and with the hope of success, a decision was made to attend the weekly, Thursday audition sessions at Pioneer Recording Studio. The studio doors were open every week to allow artists to perform and impress owners, Gary Rubin and Alan Sussman - in hope that they might find the new talent they could offer recording contracts to for their growing label, which had previously released songs by The Modernistics in 1965.

The Sensations auditioned around November 1966 and performed two songs which were written by Gregory Glazer, titled; “Blinded By Pride” and “I Found A Love”. From the opening bars of “Blinded by Pride”. The raw street soul vocals add a pleading and emotional quality to the lyrics – telling the story of every young man that has lost love through his own blind pride.

After they wowed Gary Rubin at these initial audition sessions, it was arranged for a contract to be drawn up with parental consent, as some of the group were still underage. They signed to Pioneer along with another auditioning group The Gambrells, who already had success around Detroit working with Ollie McLoughlin and backing Deon Jackson’s “Love Makes The World Go Around” LP for Carla Records.

Gary decided to hire Milton Olsson and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to arrange and record the band tracks at United Sound Studio for both The Sensations & The Gambrells. The multi-track master tape was then brought back to Pioneer Studio to vocal overdub The Sensation’s audition vocals. Unfortunately, Gary said that at the time the engineer had recorded the “Blinded By Pride” and “I Found A Love” band tracks in such a way it was considered too fast and was almost impossible to get the vocals and instrumentation to come together – as such it was shelved and instead Gary decided only to release only The Gambrells songs “Jive Talk” & “Find A Love”.

Disappointing for The Sensations, Greg continued to write songs. Gary remembers Greg coming into the studio regularly to write songs and they went on to record a demo of a track called “Clean up the Attic”. Gary then played the “Clean up the Attic” tape to Jerry Hubbard, who was in the Soul Sextet, and later Tribal Sinfonia. On hearing the track Jerry Hubbard asked Greg to join the Tribe and the other members of The Sensations sadly disappeared into obscurity. When we heard the various audition vocal takes and the United Sound multi-track tape, it was easy to hear the potential in the song. But it needed to be cleaned up and mixed to really get the best out of it. In our eyes there was only one place to go – so we jumped on a call with Kevin Fingier who is fast becoming a regular member of the MD Collective and who will be working with us right through this project.

On hearing the takes, he too could hear the potential and was excited to be able to work on the tracks. It was fantastic to hear the audition tapes taken and brought back to life and – following a couple of meetings to discuss the mixes, we all agreed what we thought needed to be done and the songs were sent off to mastering with JJ at Goldenmastering - The results when received back where beyond our expectations! So, here we are, after all these years - with the support of Gary Rubin and Greg Glazer’s son & daughter, Sarah and Dan Glazer - we are very proud to release The Sensations songs which originally should have been released, way back in 1966 alongside The Gambrells.

New Loves - Paradise Of Love - My Heart Is Suffering Baby - MD118

The New Loves comprised of James (Jemy) Cheers, Robert (Bobby) Franklin Jnr., Sharon Gambrell, Sandra Gambrell and Pat Hunt. The girls had already recorded for one of Ollie McLaughlins labels Carla, releasing two tracks entitled “Pain In My Heart” & “You Better Move” under the The Gambrells. However, due to Ollie McLaughlin’s efforts being solely focused on the success of The Capitols and Deon Jackson, The Gambrells were sadly left in the shadows to be used as backing vocalists, assisting Deon Jackson with ‘‘Love Makes The World Go Round”. After an audition at Pioneer, they were quickly signed and started to record with studio owner Gary Rubin - sometimes as part of a group, such as The New Loves, sometimes as backing vocalists, and also in their own right as the Gambrells.

Robert (Bobby) Franklin Jnr is no other than the Bobby Franklin, who on returning from the Navy started Bobby Franklin’s Insanity with a group of school friends, John Hopkins, Hubert Crawford, Mike Anthony and Michael Gray. Bobby recalls – in an article, he wrote – that he met Jemy (James Cheers) when he was around 14. He was on the way back from Custer Elementary School, he saw a a young guy playing the guitar. Bobby stopped and took his drum sticks from his back pocket and started playing rhythm alongside the young guitarist. From there they struck up a friendship and the Famous Bros. were born – Bobby Franklin and Jemy Cheers.
Gary Rubin strongly believed in the talents of all five and decided to join The Famous Brothers & The Gambrells together to create The New Loves but sadly during the initial audition takes, little did any of them know that after this they would never record as a group again. James and Bobby went off to serve their country in Vietnam. Both safely returned home from service and worked together later in life in both music and business, but The New Loves never got back together again. Unfortunately, The Famous Brothers could not see this release of The New Loves tracks as James passed away in May 2020, followed by Bobby in July.

The Gambrells, continued to work with Gary Rubin at Pioneer Studio until 1967. They released songs “Jive Talk” and “Find A Love” in 1966, then the following year in 1967, they worked with Mike Valvano at Pioneer to record “I’m In Love For The First Time” / “Love Is In The Air”, their final recording. All three members of The Gambrells are still alive and well - Sandra & Sharon Gambrell both live in Detroit still and Pat Hunt now lives in Las Vegas. They have all retired from the music industry but Sandra still sings in her local church. They are so happy to know their music is still enjoyed around the world, as they previously had no idea before our contact!

When listening to these audition tapes it was very clear that we needed to retain the atmosphere of the audition itself, the excitement of a group of young singers and musicians and to that end, we left in some of the out-take tapes on “My heart Is Suffering Baby”. At the end of the take you can hear the call on the flip side which is ”Paradise of Love”. We put this on the top side as a great example of mid-tempo group harmony soul, the fact that it features the Gambrells is an added bonus and acts as a leader for future exploration of their story. More on that later in the Pioneer series! But suffice to say you may be very surprised by how tight knit the Detroit music scene was and who appears on what releases.

Randolph Brown & Company – It Ain’t Like It Used To Be / You Can Be Cured - SHOT 116
The latest 45 from Shotgun records features the renowned 1970s track ''It Ain't Like It Used To Be'' from Randolph Brown & Company.
Randolph Brown & Company was the identity of future soul star Randy Brown as he embarked upon his successful solo career following a six-year period as lead singer of The Newcomers at Stax.
After a 1974 single on Stax-owned Truth Records, Brown issued two singles on the obscure Memphis label, Black Magic. Both were written and produced by Carl Smith and David Weatherspoon and were picked up in 1975 by Mainstream Records in New York for national release on their IX Chains label.
The second of these singles, 'It Ain't Like It Used To Be', captured the mood of the times as people faced the social and financial challenges of a deepening economic crisis. This anthemic song has much relevance today, hence this timely revival.

Official release day: 31st May 2022

Raja-Nee’ has re-emerged from her musical hiatus with a new single “Come Get This Love” a midtempo classic with romantic lyrics, where listeners are treated to the smooth sounds of a classic pop piano performed by Smooth Jazz and Adult Contemporary R&B artist John “ThaSaint” Morris, layered with a plethora of buttery, bluesy guitar licks from Smooth Jazz guitarist Wilfred Frelix.
“Come Get This Love” was produced by John “ThaSaint” Morris and Raja-Nee’, written by Richard Wilford & Raja-Nee’, John ThaSaint Morris and Wilfred Frelix. Mixed and mastered by Bernard Terry for Area 521 Studios, Flint MI.
"Come Get This Love"  was released  orginally digitally back In September 2020 and did really over here in the UK getting to number one in the UK Soul charts for over two weeks and in the US and Italy. There was also a remix with Samuel Archer in July 2021.
For the first time ever it will be coming out on a 45.
Over on the flip is a BRAND new mix by The Packxsz.

The romantic elements are reminiscent of the award-winning Chicago soul-R&B veteran’s material from back in the day. ‘I’m patiently waiting for you to take me away from here,’ sings the veteran neo soul artist born Renee Knott-Freeman. ‘It’s driving me crazy, anticipating how you’ll hold me so near.’

Raja-nee’ began singing in church at the mere age of five. As an emerging talent, her voice was recognized by Marshall Thompson of Chicago’s famed Chi-Lites, and his mentorship helped develop her craft and stage presence. She toured with the Chi-Lites, and recorded on their Just Say You Love Me album — with the single Eternity taking top spots on overseas radio stations. Years later, after garnering much attention for herself, Raja-nee’ landed a production deal and auditioned with the superproducers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Her debut reggae album featured hits such as Bitchism, Take Your Time and Turn It Up — the latter featured on the soundtrack for the 1994 movie A Low Down Dirty Shame. Raja-nee’ has also recorded with the legendary James Brown and been awarded the Chicago Home Jam Award.

Forthcoming Release - Jon Allen and The Skinner Brothers - Feel Alright.

Glamp Rd Records is delighted to present its eagerly anticipated first release; ‘Feel Alright’ by Jon Allen and The Skinner Brothers.
After being played as 'The UD Toronadoes'; the fictional rivals to the TSU Toronadoes (University of Dallas rather than Texas State University); interest was such that finding the real vocalist became a mission.  Having located the writers and through them the rights owners of the tracks negotiations began on bringing the track to vinyl as well as work on a new label to carry the 45.
Glamp Rd has a philosophy of releasing tracks that have never been seen on vinyl and presenting them in the traditional British format.  This its alongside ensuring the rights owners are duly rewarded for their efforts and collectors are presented with a value for money package that is sure to appreciate in value.
Fully licensed and available in a limited release of 300 individually numbered 45s, this 45 sets a trail for releases to follow.  Pre-release demand has been high and this first and only press is set to instantly be a collector’s piece as well as a dancefloor winner.
This collaboration between Jon Allen and The Skinner Brothers (Adam and Dan) appears here for the first time on vinyl. Its firmly in the mould of the Texan style soul of Archie Bell or the TSU Toronadoes.
Adam and Dan Skinner are accomplished multi-instrumentalist that both graduated from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Their work has been featured in original programming on TV channels around the globe.  Working on scores for feature length and short films, they have honed their skills in their fully equipped central London recording studio.
Their work spans the spectrum of musical styles from indie to world music taking in rock, soul, blues and jazz along the way. Drawing on this rich palette and they work as performers and producers alongside some of the finest musicians from the English Session Orchestra, RSVP Choir and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
All these elements come together here in a superb track from their digital album ‘Soul Rewired’.  ‘Feel Alright’ is coupled with the equally dancefloor friendly instrumental version that has never been publicly available until now.
There are no 'pre-orders' or 'pre-payment' options and the release is only available direct from www.glamprd.com.  It will go on sale on Sunday 20th March 2022 and until that point will show as 'Sold Out' to prevent pre-orders.

New 7" On Soul4real - Newban - If I Could (Make You Mine) / Rhythm & Rhyme (S4R18)

If I Could (Make You Mine) / Rhythm & Rhyme (S4R18)
Back in what now feels like a golden period in music and creativity, in the 1970s, many bands were formed by students. It almost seems like so many people could either sing, play, dance or write songs! This was also the case of several Woodland High School students in New York, who created Newban with fellow classmates.
The group started gigging around the tri-state area of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, and were soon brought to the attention of legendary Bell Recording Studios audio engineer Malcolm Addey, who recorded with the band over a two-month period in 1974. Three years later the tracks made up two superb and sought-after albums released by tax scam label Guinness.
In 1977, Newban headed out to play the Los Angeles nightclub scene, closed a deal with A&M, and changed the band name to Atlantic Starr at the request of Herb Alpert.
For the first time on a 7” format, Soul4Real brings you two of the best songs from Newban. Enjoy the music…

Diggin' Deep Records - Bobby Barners / Chuck Womack - New 45 - March 2022

DD 017A Bobby Barnes "Super High On Your Love" / DD 017B Chuck Womack & The Sweet Souls "Losing Your Good Thing"
THE NEWEST ‘DIGGIN’ DEEP’ LIMITED EDITION 45
RELEASE DATE FRIDAY 4th MARCH 2022
OUT IN TWO WEEKS AND AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER NOW!
Can You Dig It?
DD017A BOBBY BARNES – SUPER HIGH ON YOUR LOVE
DD017B CHUCK WOMACK & THE SWEET SOULS – LOSING YOUR GOOD THING
It is with great pleasure that we announce the upcoming Diggin’ Deep 45. A late 70’s midtempo floater backed with an early 70’s raw soul deepie.
These tracks are from the Raina and Ramco labels respectively, out of Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
This UK release has been somewhat delayed due to pressing plant problems throughout Europe and the appearance of the A side on a European label, where it seemed sensible to postpone DD017, giving both labels a chance to circulate.

BOBBY BARNES – SUPER HIGH ON YOUR LOVE (1977)
Enigmatic 70s and 80s Soul artist Bobby Barnes knew how to throw it down with his soulful, no-nonsense vocals and bluesy guitar work. Bobby’s deep grasp of Blues, Soul and R&B helped form his strong, sophisticated approach. That versatility is evident across Bobby’s heartfelt ballads, smooth slow-jams and early 70s anthems. Bobby Barnes scored releases on the Discovery, Poor Man’s, Marvel International, Cross-Tone, and The Scam Sound record labels. Ultimately, the distinguished Mr. Barnes found his way to Fervor Records via Motown staff drummer, producer, and label exec Lawrence Carroll. The two met while performing at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater. Immediately captivated by Barnes’ charismatic stage prowess, Carroll kept tabs on the singer and signed him to his newly formed Raina label, releasing several singles. Produced and arranged by Lawrence Carroll, this is the first release on a UK label of this great side and an essential addition to your Diggin’ Deep collection.
CHUCK WOMACK & THE SWEET SOULS – LOSING YOUR GOOD THING (1970)
Chuck Womack is best known for the funky “Ham Hocks And Beans,” a song penned by Womack himself. The band gigged regularly at the Myles Lounge on 13th Street and Washington in Phoenix, AZ. They soon caught the attention of local music entrepreneur Floyd Ramsey. Ramsey signed Womack to his Ramco Records label on February 10, 1970. He paired the band with engineer Tim Hunnicutt at his flagship recording studio, Audio Recorders Of Arizona. The group laid down four sides for the label with “Ham Hocks And Beans – Part 1 and Part 2“ released on Ramco later that year. The band featured Chuck Womack on Vocals, Carl Gholson on sax, Delmar Stewart on drums, Bubba Cita on bass, and Raymond George on guitar. Two additional songs from those sessions were found in the Ramco archives. “Sweet Soul Special” and the raw deep soul track “Losing Your Good Thing” in 2019.
Chuck Womack met his beautiful wife Vivian at the Myles Lounge and they were married February 6th, 1972, just two years after he signed with Ramco. Mr. Womack passed away February 3, 2018 leaving his lasting legacy on the Phoenix Soul scene and this, his first release on a UK label, or anywhere else in the world, another essential addition to your Diggin’ Deep collection.
Diggin’ Deep are honoured to be able to bring you these superb recordings from Phoenix, Arizona, USA. We hope you’ll agree, this is a 45 that every Soul fan will want to have in their collection.
Both sides will be available on a beautifully mastered vinyl 45.
DD017 collector’s release is available at just £12 each plus postage and packing.
Avoid Disappointment. Pre-order ON THE WEBSITE ONLY now, while stocks last.

While you were sleeping - Ewen Spencer Book & Interview Feature

The Guardian is running an interview and feature on Ewan Spencer, details and link folow below
‘We’ve always been very good at enjoying ourselves’: Ewen Spencer’s photographs of a lost clubbing generation
In the late 1990s, the photographer shot images of dancers at niche London club nights. He reflects on how smartphones have changed the scene, and how his pictures became a book

These pictures aren’t   about Teds, Skinheads, Northern Soul, Acid House or Jungle and Garage, they’re not about Nu Metal or South London blackout clubs…but they are all here alongside high street carpet clubs because here in the UK we know how to throw a party, we work hard and play hard, grace under pressure, street style into high fashion To quote Ray Davies I ask, 'Where have all the good times gone’?

Can read the full article and interview via
https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2022/feb/20/ewen-spencer-dance-club-photography-while-you-were-sleeping-interview
The book is due out end of March 2022

New Soul Direction 45 - Split Decision Band - Out Today

Soul-Direction are pleased to announce our next release.
Split Decision Band - 'You're The One / My Love Just For You' - Soul-Direction
Release notes
After hearing this album on it's initial release this recently became a real "No Brainer" and to bring this as a 7" vinyl release is a real honour.
For us, although designated A & B sides, there is no denying that each track is an "A Side" in itself and that's how we see them.
An obscure R&B group from Des Moines, Iowa, Split Decision Band released one single during their existence - Issued on the local Network label in 1978.The band centred around Lead vocalist and songwriter Gordon Starr Flipping, whose collaborations with Prince made him something of a legend in the Mid-West area.
Core member Gordon Starr Flipping was tracked down by Now and Again Records and his material was released in a self-titled full-length album released in 2017.These tracks were unreleased sessions recorded at an unknown studio or Gordon Flipping’s house in Des Moines, IA, between 1979-1984 by The Split Decision Band. The two tracks featured here were licensed courtesy of Now and Again and with the blessing of The Split Decision Band.
Gordon Starr Flipping was born in 1957 as one child of five in Des Moines, Lowa, with white and Native American parents (Sioux People). At the age of nine he used to imitate James Brown and styled his hair in an “Afro” and despite being called numerous derogatory names his love of this type of music began to form. He started entering talent competitions and by the age of 14 he had teamed with cousins Larry & Lacey Fowlers to start a group called the Relations.
They were inspired by James Brown and Angela Davis and liked the message they were spreading. He later joined Del Jones, James Watkins and his Brother Butch and formed the group New Establishment In Soul. Flipping wrote and recorded some demos whilst in the “music wilderness” trying to get enough money together to make a record which was proving hard to do. He also played in a few pick up bands to keep the money coming in. Later he met a guy called Leonard Shaw who advertised himself as a sort of “Go To” record guy. He met up with him to present his demos and was told his old friend Del Jones had already beaten him to it. In the meantime he had reformed the band and named them The Split Decision Band.
Jones asked Flipping to join the band. Jones then turned Flipping’s “Watching Out” track into what sounded like a sure fire hit and “Go To” man Shaw brought in some additional members and promised an assembly line of hits through his network of contacts. Shaw proved to be a character of “Ill Repute” and after signing what can only be described as a dubious contract things were left very unsure in Flipping’s mind. Flipping along with the band members and others that Leonard had brought in managed to record enough songs for an album which they were to call “A Thing Of Your Own” between 1978 and 1983.
By then Leonard Shaw’s “dealings” had caught up with him and even though the album had been finished his seemingly large network of connections never materialised. The album of course never saw a release until Now and Again released it in 2017.
Gordon Starr Flipping now leads a non-profit group called “Young Heroes” that aims to help the kids of Des Moines off the streets through musical education and he still likes to impersonate any artist that inspires him.
Some of the information has been drawn from the Now and Again Sleeve notes and other sources.
Tracks Licensed to Soul Direction courtesy of Now and Again Records.

New 45 - Diane Ward & Kevin Fingier Collective - Fingier / Acid Jazz 45

New on a recent release on Acid Jazz's Fingier imprint, a great two sider from Diane Ward and the Kevin Fingier Collective 'Why Don't You Go Home / Cocktail De Medianoche'
Label release notes/blurb follows below
Acid Jazz presents the next instalment of the Fingier Records Classic series: The Kevin Fingier Collective, featuring incredible voice of Diane Ward with 'Why Don't You Go Home', alongside Latin floor-filler 'Cocktail de Medianoche'.

With 'Why Don't You Go Home' Fingier produces a monster Rhythm & Blues tune that will take you straight to the King and Federal R&B sound, and for the B side, 'Cocktail De Medianoche' is the perfect mix of Boogaloo and Northern Soul. Percussion, flute and horns will make this a Fingier favourite for lovers of Latin grooves and Uptempo Soul.

Diane Ward is singer from USA, who grew up singing Gospel in her local church. Music was always a big part of her life, and she has always had a deep interest in Rhythm & Blues and Jazz. She lived in Argentina for a couple of years, and one night Kevin saw her perform and instantly her voice blew his mind. In his words:

“She’s a proper R&B singer, she reminded me to Ruth Brown, Mary Ann Fisher or Lula Reed. She has that potent and obscure sound that took me to those lately '50s early '60s Popcorn tracks”

With two monster tracks, calling this a ‘Double Sider’ wouldn’t be enough, both with that '60s sound we've come to expect from Fingier Records.

New Release - Kimberlite Records 007 - Aladean Kheroufi - Love!... (Is The Answer) B/W Every Girl

BRAND NEW RELEASE! Aladean Kheroufi - Love!... (Is The Answer) b/w Every Girl - Kimberlite (KIM007)
This is an exciting record from one of the more expressive artists to emerge over the past couple of years, and another double sided hit for the Kimberlite stable.
Aladean's soulful expression lands a realisation that love isn’t a noun or a something that exists between two people, but rather a verb, an outpouring of healing, compassion and joy, which connects everyone and everything. It’s what the ‘Doctor of Soul’ is offering and this kind of LOVE, might just be what the world needs right now.
Musically, this record is pure genius, the a-side is a beautiful soulful ballad which should be received with particular affection on the lowrider scene, whilst the up-tempo flip is tighter than tight as it rifts and shifts into breaks, horns, and slick vocals delivering a dance floor scorcher like no other. Brilliant!
Just in from Kimberlite …..
"EVERY TIME I CLOSE MY EYES .... I KNOW YOU'RE RIGHT BY MY SIDE"
There was a night that sticks out as I'm writing this. Aladean was over at my place, we were listening to soul records and having some drinks. From beer and Barbara Lynn to tequilla and Thomas East if my memory serves, but that's unreliable at best. Specifics of the night are blurry, but what really struck me since then was the running topic that carried the conversation for the entire evening: a profound passion for love songs.
This record leads with ‘Love... (Is The Answer)’, a ballad in line with Aladean's espoused ideology. Velvet vocals, a playful swing to the drums, and intimate exchanges between guitar and keyboard tease at yearnings which harmonising backing vocals satisfy with exultation. This isn't a simple love song sharing romantic feelings for just one person, this is a grand gesture that declares love for everyone. This is a therapy, philosophy, and a recipe to get through hard times. This is help we all need.
Were the leading side to be foreplay, then the other will bring you to an earned climax. ‘Every Girl’ hits with a force that will shake you and sets a rhythmic pace that may break you. Reminiscent of Mr Mayfield's 'Move On Up', horns punctuate percussion and bass that are only just barely constrained. This is an expression of pure joy and an exploration of the heart's governance.
These two sides serve both as a testament to the glory of love, and as physical representation of a true labour of love. Cutting through the profundity though, our biggest hope is that you just love this music.
PRE-ORDER LIVE - FEB 16 5PM GMT

LOVE NOTE:
Sadly... this lovely release experienced some minor little injuries during manufacture.   As such, the labels are reversed on all Promo and Issue copies, also some very minor bubbling on the labels may be apparent, although this is more visible on the Promo copies. These minor superficial defects are a feature across the release and in no way affect the musical quality nor detract from the aesthetic desirability.
Who said Love was perfect, often it's our imperfections which hide some of the greatest love songs yet to be heard. ❤️
