The Arock - Serock - Sylvia Soul Story Continued - Review

This release is the second CD to focus on the labels owned by Al Sears, a renowned saxophonist of the 40’s and 50’s.  The first CD was way back in  2002.  This compilation has been a long time coming and continues were the first left off.  Here we have unreleased masters, demos, flips sides of the previously featured 45s and more.
Without spoiling the reading of the liner notes a brief bit of background may be needed.  Al, after writing the hit “Castle Rock” in the early 50’s set up two publishing firms, the first one named after taking the first two letters of his and his wife Ruth’s Christian names, the other was named after his daughter Sylvia.
With his publishing flourishing and he himself producing it was only natural labels were to follow.  The first was Gator in 1960 with four releases.  Serock was next located in 1650 Broadway next door to Scepter who distributed the label. This was then replaced by Arock, which in turn was replaced by Sylvia.
The music recorded by Sears followed no set pattern and covered various styles, from Group Harmony to R&B to Soul.

The Corvairs kick off the CD with “Love Is Such A Good Thing” . This is the flip to “A Victim Of Her Charms” which featured on the first CD. An excellent male group double sider with this side just edging it for me.
Stirling McGee follows with the flip to “Keep On” which was popular in the UK some years ago at some venue in Wigan.  “Get In My Arms Little Girlie” is again for me the better side than “Keep on” and we are treated to a remix from the master tapes and have the added bonus of a missing 21 seconds added.
Gene Burks it appears had a very brief recording and just two releases for Arock. Again we have another remixed flip in “Take My Hand”, a more up-tempo and catchy dancer than the top side and one of my favourites of this release.
Tutti Hill is a strange one.  “When The Going Gets Rough” should have been the flip to “He’s A Lover” but all copies of the 45 despite being correctly labeled played “Baby Take It Slow” something all the anoraks had missed. So we have the first ever release of “When The Going Gets Rough” an excellent soulful mid pacer again better than its intended topside.
Joan Moody featured on the first compilation with three tracks including her Northern Soul classic “We Must Be Doing Something Right”.  This time she pitches in with two tracks, the first “I Can’t Stay Away” which until last year was still unreleased and saw the light of day on a Kent 45, here it receives its first outing on a CD. “Music To My Ears’, similar to “I Can’t Stay Away” was on Joan’s fourth 45 release for Sylvia.
Gary & Gary’s “I’m Leaving For Parts Unknown” has seen plenty of turntable action here in the UK over the years in particular during the mid 1980s. The duo are actually Gary Klyvert and Carl Gould who had replaced Garrett Saunders who went on to record solo releases for Sears.
The Diplomats were the most recorded act for the stable of labels and here we have “I Really Love You”, a Van McCoy song and previously unreleased until it saw the light of day on a Kent Anniversary 45 and a CD dedicated to the group.
The aforementioned Garrett Saunders features with two tracks. One being another flip, this time to “A Day Or Two”.  “Easier Said than Done” an excellent soulful mid-tempo offering.  The other is previously unissued and unfinished.  I Keep Coming Back For More” is a sparsely backed soul number, basically a piano and Garrett in a similar vein to “A Day Or Two”.
Another unreleased number from who it is believed Freddie Solomon is “I Don’t Care”.  Again the backing is basic instrument wise and with a bit of femme backing it does get your foot tapping and does grow on you after a listen or two.  Ansler Montell is next with “Chained Am I”. Again originally unreleased it is recorded in the style of the Chain Gang songs of the day but instead of working on the chain gangs he is chained to his love. 
Detroit and a Mike Hanks production gives us Vivain Collians with “Hey Officer” see her pleading with a Police Officer to let her man go who has been naughty. Theola Kilgore gives a great soulful performance with “This Is My Prayer”.  Here we are treated to the unedited take.  Sinner Strong is next with “Nobody But Me” from 1963 it has a choral backing giving it a gospel influence.
The great Van McCoy, a staff writer at Sylvia gives a great vocal performance on “It Ain’t No Big Thing”.  It was the only release on Rockway and is an excellent dancer with some female greats supplying backing vocals, Cisssuy Houston, Dee Dee Warwick, Sylvia Shemwell and Estelle Brown no less.   The 45 has had some turntable action here in the UK over the years, mainly by collectors rather than the regular DJs. McCoy also features on the DC Playboys “You Were All I Need”.
Two mid 60’s R&B recording follow, Billy Washington with “I Wanna Come In” an dChet “poison” Ivy with “Something Else”. 
Marie Knight with Junior Lewis backing/answering Marie on “Nothing In The World”.  Initially released on Okeh we have here the demo version.  Junior Lewis also chips in with two recordings of his own.  “It Won’t Work Out” and “Where Are you”, both previously unreleased. The first another piano backed vocal, possibly another demo whilst the second is a more typical Big City New York ballad.
Another demo is next.  “Did You Hear” was performed by Don Covay.  It is a shame this wasn’t finished and released as it is a very soulful number although it did see the light of day via Barry Seidel but I can’t say I have heard that version.   Big Wheel whilst in the main featured Detroit artists and productions was in fact a New York label and one of the owners was an executive at Sylvia.  Discovered amongst the Sylvia tapes was the mistitled recording of “Kindness, Love and Misunderstanding” which was found a release via Eddie King on Big Wheel.
The CD closes with one of my all time favourite male group harmony 45s.  The Larks (the Philly group) with “For The Love Of Money” is a firm favourite of mine and was featured on the first compilation.  Here we are treated to the excellent flip side, “Another Sleepless Night”, another fine example of male group harmony.
Although many of the tracks may not be familiar with many we are still treated to a strong compilation of varying styles that I would give a strong three out of five, possibly three and a half.  For the anoraks we have the usual excellent liner notes courtesy of Ady Croasdell packed with plenty information, photos and label scans.

Soul On The Real Side #5 Album Out Now!

Outta Sight in association with Real Side Records, presents Soul On The Real Side #5…
20 more soulful sides from Real Side Records, the rare soul coalition of Francis T and Joe Boy.  
New-to-CD tracks come courtesy of Jesus Alvarez (one half of Shirley & Co.) with his 1981 crossover boogie “Please Stay Don’t Go” (trk. 3) – Alvarez also cut the modern soul rarity “Woman” under the pseudonym The Nicky Newarkers.  

The J.A.L.N. Band finally make it to CD after 40 years with “Let’s Do It Now” (trk. 6), a fine modern soul offering penned and performed by former band member, and Real Side artist, Roy G Hemmings.
“Whisper (In Your Ear) (trk. 2) was written and recorded by Reggie Griffin and is taken from his 1982 album Mr Everything.  Griffin was an original member of Manchild along with Babyface before he joined Sylvia and Joe Robinson’s Sugarhill empire as a studio musician and producer.  He also performs on “Aah Dance” (trk. 9) by Fine Quality aka Earl Les Dion Brinkley and his cuz (cousin) Cathy Peterson.
R Kelly also makes a welcome return to Real Side with “Backyard Party” (trk. 16) taken from his 2015 album The Buffet.  The party atmosphere continues with UK DJ Ben Westbeech on his 2011 modern soul anthem “Something For The Weekend” (trk. 17) and Lisa Stansfield keeps the British end up with her superb cover of Gloria Scott’s “(A Case Of) Too Much Love Making”. 
Finally we tip our hat to the soulful side of reggae with the sought after “Baby Don’t Wake Me” produced by Jackie Edwards in 1972 for Del Davis and our sublime finale “Give Him Up” by First Generation.

The Ebony Affair TV Show - Videos Now Available

Hi...I thought that this might interest quite a few of you on here. I had 2 clips of The Delfonics uploaded on my channel but after a while I received a polite message to take them down by the rightful owner John Jackson. (He is the president of WJEJ Productions and owner of The Ebony Affair Show. He sent me his e-mail so I messaged him to say sorry and thank you for getting in touch without putting a claims report into youtube who would have given me a strike.
A couple of weeks later he actually mailed back and said would I be kind enough to drop by on his youtube channel and see what I think of it? I was surprised to see that he has started to share his rare clips from The Ebony Affair Show.
Many artists appeared on this such as Bettye Swann, Tommie Young, The Modulations, Edwin Starr, Detroit Emeralds, The Invitations, The Temprees, Baby Washington, Betty Wright, The Moments plus a lot more. John Jackson has said he has over 400 clips and that he is looking for investors to put the television series on air? or maybe someone who has the sources could talk him into putting them on to dvds for the public to buy?

The MVP'S Uncovered!

The MVP’s 1971 release for the Buddah label, “Turning My Heart Beat Up” has become one of the most iconic records to have ever been spun on The Northern Soul Scene, due to its inclusion as part of the soundtrack of Granada Televisions 1977 documentary, ‘This England”. On the much maligned night their camera’s entered the underground nocturnal world of Wigan Casino.
There have been several different schools of thought throughout the ensuing decades as to whom the group really were? From claims that they were a white pop group, a claim probably based on some of the other middle of the road material that the songs writers and producers Bobby Flax and Lanny Lambert have in their repertoire.
Others believed them to be in all probability the same group as the Florida outfit ‘The MVP’(Most Valuable Players) who recorded a string of 45’s and an album of the same name on the MVP label. Fortunately at last all these previous assumptions have now been disproved.
The real story behind the identity of the group arose albeit unintentionally when following a licensing deal between us (Soul Junction Records) and veteran Atlanta, GA songwriter, performer and producer Thomas ‘Tee’ Fletcher, from whom we had licensed The Combinations Kimtone 45 rarity “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”.
When we asked Tee Fletcher if he had any promotional photo’s or background information on The Combinations he advised me that he would introduce me to a former recording artist and friend of his, one Mr. Al Davis quote “Al’s the best person to ask”! So during the ensuing conversation with Al Davis the following story of the true identity of The M.V.P’s unfolded:  
The Combinations were a vocal quartet out of Atlanta, Georgia, who recorded a solitary 45 single entitled “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me/The Goddess Of Love” in 1968 for the vanity Kimtone label. This project was a collaboration between Thomas Fletcher (or as he’s more widely known as ‘Tee’ Fletcher) and Billy Lyles.
 

Tee would feature as producer and arranger upon both sides of the 45, with him being the songwriter on “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”. Tee remembers the group’s original line-up as being the lead singer Emory Cloud supported initially by a bass singer known as Smitty, a first tenor known as Big Harold and a second tenor Little Harold, with Smitty later being replaced by Jack Fraser (prior to the Kimtone 45 release).
Although the Kimtone 45 did make some noise locally for The Combinations they had by then already built a reputation as a sharp well rehearsed working group who performed regularly throughout  the states of Georgia, Florida and The Carolina’s. A later merger between two groups would see Emory Cloud and Jack Frazer from the Combinations joining up with Jesse Bryant and Alphonzo ‘Al’ Davis of the group known as ‘The Classic’s, the name under which this new ensemble continued to perform, for the immediate future anyway.
Jesse Bryant, Al Davis and Jack Frazer all knew each other well having previously performed with Louis Grant as part of the Doo Wop group The Continentals who recorded the 1962 outing “It Doesn’t Matter/Whisper It” (Hunter 3503) with Louis Grant being the songs composer.
One of the Atlanta clubs where The Classic’s often performed was situated on the formerly named Hunter Street now known as Martin Luther King Street, and was named after it’s owner, the former Major League Baseball player, Donn Clendenon.
Donn Clendenon is best remembered as the World Series MVP (Most Valuable Player) of 1969 when as the first baseman for the New York ‘Amazin’ Mets he scored a series clenching record of home runs for a five game series. It was Clendenon by then acting as The Classic’s manager who was responsible for persuading them to drop the name ‘The Classic’s in favour of and in an act of his own pure self-indulgence, assume the new group name of ‘The Most Valuable Players’ (later abbreviated to just ‘The M.V.P.’S).

The New York based Buddah label at the time had a series of A&R men working throughout the southern states searching for new talent. It was through Clendenon meeting one of these A&R men and accepted his invitation to take The M.V.P’s to New York that they recorded the Bobby Flax and Lanny Lambert produced and penned “Turning My Heartbeat Up/Every Man For Herself ”(BDA 262).
 

The lead vocals on “Turning My Heartbeat Up” were performed by ex Combination lead singer Emory Cloud, while the lead vocals on the 45’s flipside “Every Man For Herself” were performed by Al Davis. “Turning My Heartbeat Up” would later become a popular sound on the UK northern soul scene achieving iconic status with its inclusion in the sound track of the 1977 Granada Television Documentary “This England” feature of Wigan Casino. Unfortunately there was to be no more recording made and sadly all the members of The Combinations have since passed away, with the exception of Alphonzo Davis, the last of ‘The M.V.P.’S’.

Eddie Parker - But If You Must Go - Deep Soul 45

Absolutely thrilled to be able to tell you about the next release on the revived and revered ‘Deep Soul’ label through Ace Kent: the legendary Holy Grail ‘But If You Must Go’ by Eddie Parker.
I can assure you that the title is not being rush-released to coincide with the United Kingdom’s exit of the EU, nor has it anything to do with England’s woeful football team being dumped out of the Euro’s, nevertheless, the timing of this incredible 45 is right on cue and really can’t come soon enough for Deep Soul lovers everywhere, I’m sure.
The record is the epitome of tear-filled, tortured, dramatic and emotional, deep soul music and the original 45 has been in demand in the UK, Europe and Japan for several decades.
Having finally been made available on the Jack Ashford ‘Just Productions’ CD through Ace Kent, earlier this year, there’s bound to be a rush for the vinyl. A 45 of ‘But If You Must Go’ is something that every fan of the deeper shades of soul will want to possess.
Originally issued on the US Mam-Miko label, there simply aren’t enough copies to go around, so it’s very fitting that ‘But If You Must Go’ is to appear on the newly invigorated Dave Godin logo over here.
I well recall putting the track on a tape for Dave 20 odd years ago and he loved it. He and I had founded the miniscule ‘Deep Soul Appreciation Society’ in 1988 and had ambitions to release obscure and wonderful titles such as this. In hindsight it’s a good job we didn’t, as at the time there was very little interest from others, and the project most likely would have bombed.
But the time is right, right now, and more especially as the flipside is the absolutely stunning, previously unreleased, Debbie Taylor ‘All That I Have’ which Kevin Briscoe once told me was one of the best things I’d ever shared with him. And that should be recommendation enough for anyone.
Release of Deep Soul – 03 is scheduled for end of July 2016.

Sir Mack Rice RIP

Detroit soul stalwart Sir Mack Rice, who wrote “Mustang Sally,” “Respect Yourself” and other enduring R&B hits, died Monday in metro Detroit of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 82.
Rice and his family moved to Detroit in 1950 and — following an Army stint in Germany — the aspiring singer linked up with the Falcons, a talent-loaded group featuring Pickett, Joe Stubbs and Eddie Floyd. With the Falcons' dissolution in the mid-'60s, Rice devoted his energy to songwriting and a solo singing career — earning his "Sir" honorific from fellow Detroit R&B figure Andre Williams

100 Club Allnighter Cancelled - Sat 02 Jul 2016

100 Club All-Nighter Sat July 2nd Cancelled
I’m sorry to bring you more bad news this week. We did not apply for the licence in time for this nighter and rather than go ahead with a 3am event, we felt it best to cancel it. We are hoping to move the DJ line-up to the August 20th date and in future Matt, Jeff at the club and I will all put the licence applications in our diaries well in advance. When it is accepted we will announce it to everybody as soon as we can so that travel arrangements will be made. I’ve asked Jeff to apply for the August 20th licence now.
It was my fault as I have to remind Jeff to apply and my reminder came up during Cleethorpes. In the general Cleggy mayhem I forgot to tell Jeff. As soon as we have the next licenses we will email notification out and post it up on www.6ts.info, Soul Source and Facebook. Double Detroit Soul Dynamite from Hayley Records

HR 021 SHARON McMAHAN 'I have no choice' b/w 'Life ain't worth living (without you)'
This unreleased version of songwriter Sharon McMahan's classic midtempo floater sees the light for the first time, since it was recorded at United Sound Systems back in 1967, under the supervision of Ollie McLaughlin. Compared to the sparsely arranged Johnnie Mae Matthews record, this version features a beautiful Mike Terry arrangement replete with full involvement by key members of the Funk Brothers ensemble and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The flip 'Life ain't worth living (without you)' also comes from the pen of Sharon McMahan and finds the same backing crew doin' the business on a somewhat more up tempo offering.
 

HR 022  JJ BARNES 'Lucille' b/w JJ BARNES & STEVE MANCHA 'You brought love to my life'.
A slightly faster, acetate version of this recording, attributed to Melvin Davis, has been circulating around the rare soul scene for several years. This is the correctly paced, accurately identified, master version by the great JJ Barnes in true living stereo! From Bob Babbitt's distinctive opening bass line riff and George McGregor's crackling drum track, to JJ's vocal mastery, the record charges along at a frantic pace, climaxing with  staccato horn lines and a careering beat that must have made the United Sound studio walls shudder! Something this good could have only come from a prestigious talent – and this is indeed the case. Written by Tony Hestor and 'Popcorn' Wylie, it was arranged and produced by 'Popcorn' too, some time in late 1966 or early 1967. Rumour has it that 'Popcorn' shopped it around but couldn't get a deal so shelved it and forgot about it. Hayley hasn't! The B side is a completely different vintage and style, although the setting, United Sound, was the same. Written and produced by Fred Bridges and Richard Knight, for Revilot productions, in 1969, this recording sees JJ duetting with Steve Mancha again. The same session produced their version of Bobby Williams' 'Baby I need your love' (HR 018). Both tracks were rejected as potential releases however ...until now.
 
Hayley Records has many more fantastic previously unreleased tracks, from the depths of the Detroit vaults, to come, including another Jimmy Delphs peach, Bobby Shepherd, Andrea Henry, Joyce Vincent, Sam Ward, Pat Lewis, Steve Mancha and many others.

RIP James Wright - Spellbinders

James Wright founding member of the Spellbinders passed away this morning. A talented singer and writer James like most of his generation he never saw the financial fruits of his work. He had been unwell for some time and has succumbed to injuries sustained during a fire at his apartment some months ago. James wrote "I need your love" on the magnificent Spellbinders album "The Magic of the Spellbinders". I had the honour of meeting and interviewing him some years ago, he was a real gent that told the most wonderful stories of his time with the Spellbinders (and other groups) he will be sorely missed.

Charity Soul hits the £36,000 mark

£36,000.00 in 36 Months
The photo below shows Charity Soul’s youngest member (and possibly the youngest dj on the soul scene) Lilly Miller presenting a cheque for £4,000.0 to Professor Norman Maitland to aid the on-going stem cell research into finding a cure for Prostate Cancer.
This current donation from Charity Soul brings the cumulative total of donations made to the cancer research work at York University to £36,000.00, all achieved in the space of 36 months since the inception of Charity Soul.
The organisation is made up of a team of volunteers who donate their services free, along with a dedicated group of prominent dj’s from around the UK who also give there time to Charity Soul and do not receive any financial reward whatsoever.
The aspiration for Charity Soul is to achieve a donation figure of £50,000.00 by the end of 2016

McArthur - It’s So Real - Soul Junction 45

Soul Junction latest release feature a group formed by former Royal Joker Willie Jones with the groups solitary mid 70's release on Mainstream Records subsidiary Brown Dog.

Release Date:   Monday June 27th 2016
McArthur were an all male vocal quartet founded by former Royal Joker, Willie Cornelius Jones during 1974. Willie had begun the early 1970’s as the lead singer and founding member of vocal group The 21ST Century who later, due to a name clash with The 21ST Century on RCA, became known as just The 21ST.
Following the disbandment of The 21ST during 1974 Willie set about forming a further group that he vaguely remembers featured Cheslawn Vickers at the time a serving Police Officer who timed his annual leave to coincide with the groups tours. A guy called Larry and a fourth member who Willie couldn’t recall his name. Willie again was the lead vocalist and the elder statesman of the group at the ripe old age of 35 years.

Willie’s new ensemble needed a name and they finally chose what they perceived to be a strong and instantly recognizable name when they became ‘McArthur’ in honor of the United States Supreme Commander of the Allied Pacific Forces during World War II, General Douglas McArthur.
Through his previously made connections as part of  The 21ST, Willie returned to Canada  with his new ensemble ’McArthur’ securing two performing dates at The Arrows Club in Halifax, Nova Scotia. ‘McArthur’ finally broke up after a period of circa 18 months together with their lasting legacy being a solitary 45 single “It’s So Real/I’ll Never Trust Love Again” which gained a release on the New York based Mainstream subsidiary label, Brown Dog (BD9006) in 1975.

Both sides of the 45 were produced in Detroit by Clyde Clay and Charles ‘Teddy’ Johnson for Funhouse Associates, with Teddy Johnson being an old High School friend of Willie Jones.

The A-side “It’s So Real” was written by the late legendary baritone Saxophonist Andrew ‘Mike’ Terry and William Marvin Smith a respected bass guitarist and one time child protégé of Johnny Mae Mathews and Dave Hamilton. William had previously been a member of Lou Beatty’s La Beat labels house band, The LPT’s (La Beat Production Team) and was later briefly associated with the ill fated Lemon’s families Gold Records. Mike Terry had previously worked with Willie Jones during his time with the 21ST over at Joy Records as a songwriter and arranger but it is the former owner of Joy Records Joe Terrell who is credited as the arranger on McArthur’s ”It’s So Real” side ?

The B-side had begun its life under the working title of “If I Live For A 100 Years” but was eventually released using the second part of the hook line “I’ll Never Trust Love Again” written by the songs co-producer Teddy Johnson and late former lead singer of the Falcon’s (Big Wheel) Carlis Sonny Munro. The String arrangements on both sides were provided by The Detroit Symphony. The result is two excellent mid 70’s soulful ballads that have of late been gaining some belated attention and has now become very sought after.

Big Lee Dowell and The Cannonballs - What I Done Wrong - Release

Let me tell you something about the voice first. Lee Dowell, professionally known in New York City as “BIG LEE”, had a great voice, a BIG one indeed.
Brought from Buffalo to NYC by a short-haul contract with Epic, a Columbia Records Subsidiary, he recorded two tunes produced by G. Denby, “Don’t Make Me Mad” and “Black Belt”, both of which went in the soundtrack of what has been probably the first movie about gangs and social youth problems. We are speaking of 1966 and Teenage Gang Debs took to the big screen for the first time the problems of the youth living in the tenements of Brooklyn and in all America’s big cities and depicts the lives and loves of a young generation trying to survive the brutality of gang life. Short after these two productions the big man seemed to disappear as we have no notice of further releases though we dug deep. For sure he didn’t move from NY because the oh so soulful voice in this “What I done Wrong” comes from a recording of the early 70’s we found in Michigan but labeled by a Broadway Studio which closed its doors at the dawn of the 80’s, so he presumably kept on living and working in the Big Apple. Anyone with further info is the very welcome to add it to the tale.

One of my very best friends described this track as “feelgood music at it’s finest” and I totally agree with her because that’s exactly what we’d like to do. Tunes for the dancefloor, with the lads dancing lost in the music. Please judge by yourselves, the first public airing of the full length of the track will be given next tuesday by sir Dave Thorley on his Crossing the Tracks Radio Show, so tune in to Gloucester FM from 7pm to 9pm GMT and enjoy the show.
First dancefloor test at the amazing POW CITY in Dublin next saturday so if you are planning to come out for a dance expect it delivered from the decks straight to you. Back in 2004, Vampisoul was extremely honoured to play a role in the return to recording of the legendary Joe Bataan, which fully materialized in the lauded 2005 album 'Call My Name', written and produced by Daniel Collas. After being out of print for a while, the LP has now been revamped featuring new artwork and liner notes written by Andrew Mason and Daniel Collas, plus photos from the sessions.
This whole project grew out of a song called ‘Cycles Of You’, which I had written around 2000-2001 with the guitarist and bassist of my band at the time, Easy. The chord progression and vocal melody really reminded me of Bataan, and it occurred to me that it wouldn’t be impossible to get him into the studio to do a guest vocal if we ever recorded it. I had met Bataan a few years before at a small, family-reunion style show at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in my neighborhood, where he not only still sounded great, but was also gracious and easy to talk to.By the time we got around to recording with Easy, the band was about to break up but we still had the studio booked. We all agreed that we didn’t want to continue as a band, but at the same time, it would be a shame to never record what we had been working on. Around this time Bataan was playing out again, so I went to the show to see him and find out if he’d be interested in doing some vocals with us. He was agreeable, so we decided to turn it into a Joe Bataan session and do ‘Cycles Of You’. The funny thing is, ‘Chick-A-Boom’, a live favorite with Easy, was hastily added so we could have a B-side, but it ended up chosen to be the A-side of the single.

Martha High (born Martha Harvin, Washington, D.C.) is an American female vocalist.
Harvin grew up in Washington, D.C., attending Roosevelt High School and singing in Trinity AME Zion Church. She began singing in The Four Jewels (whose members attended the same church and school) after the departure of Carrie Mingo. After Martha joined the group, they changed their name simply to The Jewels and released their best-known hit, "Opportunity". After a follow-up single, "But I Do" b/w "Smokey Joe", flopped, they were dropped from Dimension Records.
The Jewels went on tour with James Brown in 1964, with a demanding nightly schedule. They visited the studios of Motown Records on the Detroit leg of the tour, hoping to record, but the building was closed that day. They did record two singles while they toured with Brown, but after a year and a half with Brown the group split up. Harvin adopted the stage name Martha High and continued singing with Brown for the next 30-plus years. Among her appearances with Brown are on the track "Summertime" and on the Original Funky Divas album.
High also recorded a self-titled disco album in 1979, released on Salsoul Records. In January 2000, she stopped performing with Brown and went on tour with Maceo Parker.
In 2004, High teamed up with the Soulpower organization, which is also behind the comebacks of Soul artists like Marva Whitney, Lyn Collins, Bobby Byrd, Gwen McCrae and RAMP. During her collaboration with Soulpower, High performed all across Europe and even performed in Africa, backed by the Soulpower Allstars. In February 2005, High embarked on the "James Brown's Funky Divas Tour" in Europe, sharing the stage with her friend Lyn Collins.
In 2016, High released her solo album on Blind Faith Records. . 11 original tunes produced and recorded by italian soul man Luca Sapio and his crew

Modernism - Cd Review

I was never a Mod. Ok, I had the sta-prest trousers and the Ben Sherman shirts, listened to some of the music, but would never have classed myself as a Mod. This was rural south-west Scotland we are talking about, not one of the major cities where you could find numerous clubs playing the music you enjoyed. However, visiting bands at the local Town Hall were generally from the north-west of England, so there was more often than not an r&b, Stax/Atlantic and of course Motown influence in the music that they played. This is where I got hooked.But no, I was never a Mod.
The music, however, was certainly appealing, like this latest offering from the Kent/Ace Stable, entitled - ‘Modernism’ a follow up to their recent release ‘Modernists’ and one that the Mods scattered around the country should certainly appreciate.The majority of the tracks are obviously from the mid to late sixties and as the music echoes out of the speakers, you could close your eyes and be transported back in time to one of those smokey, sweating, Brut smelling basement clubs where fashion was as important as the sounds.
To my ears, one or two of the tracks, lean more to the r&b side of things like Eddie Bo’s ‘Tee Na Na Na Na…’, while others, such as Chuck Jackson’s ‘Beg Me’ and The Ambertones ‘Clap Your Hands’ definitely sound dated. The Shirelles offering - ‘Crossroads In Your Heart’ first saw the light of day in 1987, with the opener from Teddy Reynolds – ‘Ain’t That Soul’ an un-released version of a late sixties track, ‘We Gonna Rub Pt1’ by Joe Johnson, which lay in the vaults until the 1990’s and Wallace Johnson’s ‘Private Eye’ being another that failed to see the light of day when it was recorded.

For me though it was the more ‘northern’ tracks that shone through such as The excellent Lou Johnson with his ‘Magic Potion’, The M&M’s and the Peanuts ‘The Phillie’ and Joan Moody’s ‘The Life of the Party’. The Stax/Atlantic sounding ‘Soul Is My Game’ by Chet ‘Poison’ Ivey and his Fabulous Avengers is another that got a second play.

As for the last track, the oldest on the disc, dating from 1958 – ‘Listen to me (Baby) by Ralph Ventsha and Red Julian Quartet, I imagine that this, as the booklet notes hint to, would be a perfect ender in any Mod club.

With the Mod scene, arguably having never been away, but lurking behind the effervescent Northern Soul one, this twenty-four track cd will be well received by those of the former persuasion and as it says in the usual first class booklet, penned on this occasion by Dean Rudland, “we are trying to depict the timeless nature of the whole world of mod”.

 
Marks out of five? As I said, I was never a Mod, but can imagine four would be about right.

The Rare Soul Bible Volume 1 - The Reissue

Due to increased demand following the publication of Volume 2, (And the fact that the originals are going for silly money on the web) I have decided to 'Reissue' Volume 1.
What’s New In The Reissue ?
Essentially this is the same book that was published 14 years ago. However, there are some differences. The vast majority of the discographies have been improved upon and expanded over that period, so the ones included here are the most complete ones I can provide in 2016. This means they take up far more space in the book itself, so whilst you have the advantage of far more detailed discographies, something else had to give. Therefore I took the decision to not include any of the original photographs, and delete all the biographies that were included in the first volume.
Volume 1 contains completely different content to Volume 2.
The book is available from Amazon right now, and will be available from me at venues all over the UK, starting with the Cleethorpes Weekender.

Comprehensive listings of a vast number of artists, plus many listing individual group members’ names as well, thus makes this my type of reference book, quite why so many of us soul lovers like this sort of detail is a mystery but the fact is we do!
A number of artists within the book have been selected for in depth coverage, with a detailed biography & discography listing some fascinating tales & recollections, likewise selected label imprints & owners are given similar in depth features, one particular one that caught my interest was Don Robey`s Peacock record stable that included Back Beat, Sure Shot & Duke from all accounts Mr Robey sounds a larger than life character who’s business operations often stretched the limits of legality!    
From Artic, Arock imprints all the way through to Zell’s & Zodiac & I certainly didn't spot any gaps, a number of interesting topics are also dealt with such has "Don't become a D.J.!", "So you want to run an All-Nighter?"........
                                          
A true labour of love just like his acclaimed website http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net this has understandably taken Dave some fourteen years to produce & that is not at all surprising when you consider the shear mass of detailed information included, as stated in his mission statement it is his aim "to produce the most complete discography section of sixties soul artists possible, and to set them out in a clear and easily understood format." Well the book delivers in full, my only criticism would be that all the photographs are reproduced in black and, but this may well have been out of Dave`s control nonetheless this is a recommended purchase and worthy of a 4-star rating.

Young Soul Rebels - Book Review

Stuart Cosgrove is a world acclaimed author, journalist, and broadcaster on both radio and TV. In fact, in 2012 he won a BAFTA for Channel 4’s coverage of the Paralympics. He’s been Broadcaster Of The Year in Scotland, and held several executive positions at Channel 4 (And was responsible for signing the show ‘Friends’ to the Channel in the UK.), and hosts a weekly show on Radio Scotland about his passion for Scottish football.  But that’s just a disguise he wears for the day job, because in reality, he’s one of us !
To use a phrase currently in vogue, Stuart is one of the ‘Children Of The Night’, and has probably devoted for more time, thought, and energy to his lifelong passion; Northern Soul, than he has to any of his jobs over the last forty years.
As I said when I reviewed Gethro Jones’ book, it’s hard to do a review of a book like this without giving the whole game away, so I’m going to use some quotes from Stuart to illustrate how the book covers his involvement in the scene.
In fact, the very first sentence made me laugh out loud. This is how to get the attention of your readers;
“Nothing will ever compare to the amphetamine rush of my young life and the night I was nearly buggered by my girlfriend’s uncle in the Potteries”
I can see why nothing would ever compare to that Stuart ! However, to reach that point Stuart describes his upbringing in Perth, and how he was first introduced to the music of black America, and how much it would hold sway over the rest of his life. The opening sentence refers to his first visit to The Torch allnighter in Tunstall, but I’ll let you read whether he survived this predicament yourselves.
I’m also rather impressed by the way that Stuart has woven short biographies of artists into the story, songs that reverberated round the Torch by Tony Clarke and Darrell Banks lead to a couple of pages of detail about the two artists.

There are also links to events in the wider world that tie into the scene in the book as well. The Miner’s Strike (Especially as Stuart was living in Yorkshire at the time), gets a lot of coverage, as does Leeds Central Club, both of which were important to Stuart, and the chapter about the Yorkshire Ripper is particularly poignant.
A theory about why Northern Soul Clubs became popular in old fashioned coastal towns stands up to examination as well, and never having thought about this, what Stuart says is absolutely correct.
“The story of Northern Soul could be told without ever leaving England’s decaying coastal towns: Blackpool, Cleethorpes, Scarborough, Bridlington, Morecombe, Whitley Bay, Southport and Prestatyn, each in their own way played host to rare Soul venues.”
Having lived in the North of England, both Lancashire and Yorkshire Stuart’s day job takes him down to London, and with it, the opportunity to visit the States (and even study there for a while), but throughout, the Soul Boy inner core burned bright. His description of finding a copy of ‘Hey Boy’ by the D C Blossoms is sheer poetry:
“It was there, in the segregated south, in a tightly packed wall of discs, some of them splattered with grey paint, that I finally found it. For some reason, unfathomable, and beyond geographic logic, there was a copy of The D C Blossoms.”
I realise that I’m skipping whole portions of the book, by ignoring Stafford (But there again I didn’t mention Wigan either), Allanton, and The 100 Club, all of which get quite extensive mentions, but I want to focus on two more things before I end this review.
A lot of the book covers people that Stuart knew well, some of whom who are no longer with us, so it’s nice to see Bub, and Pete Lawson, getting several pages each. Not many people would have been able to write so eloquently about two of the scene’s biggest characters, both different, but both equally essential to the history of the scene, so it is nice to see them remembered in this way.
The final chapter of the book talks about how Northern Soul is thriving today, and making use of the new technologies to do so, Facebook, YouTube etc however, Stuart’s views are similar to my own on this subject:
“The media is interested again, but I remain unsure that Northern Soul wants the attention that currently shines on its rituals. It is at its best as a ‘secret’ underground and should always maintain a healthy distrust of the false promises that the media brings.”
 It’s funny, although I know nearly all the people Stuart talks about in the book, with the exception of the early years. I think I only met him twice, although I know we were in the same venues quite a few times, so I think that has allowed me to be fairly objective in my review. This really is a good book, it truly is a personal history, but it weaves its way through my own history as well, (I even get a name check on page 139) and I’m sure that is how most of the people reading the book will also feel.
That just leaves me with two things to say: Buy the book, you won’t regret it, and check out Stuart’s other book about Soul Music and social history ‘Detroit ‘67’.

A Northern Soul - Teenage Fanclub's Gerard Love talks Soul music
Influential in spreading the attitude and ethos of independent music to a wider global audience, Teenage Fanclub are both an important and much loved band. By immersing themselves in the whole spectrum of popular music, they fashioned a unique sound - a Catholic eductation in which Soul music played it's part. Ahead of Gerry's 'Together' DJ Set, he talks to Peckham Soul's Craig Jamieson about how he first came across Soul music, its influence on his songwriting and reasons for the enduring interest in Northern Soul.    
C.J : What were the first soul records you bought and how did you come to buy them?
G.L : I was probably led into soul music by The Jam covering Move On Up, Big Bird, Stoned Out Of My Mind, and by the iconic photograph of the dancer, suspended in mid-air, on the inner sleeve of The Gift, and by the mod thing in the early 80s. I remember older guys at the local youth discos with badges that said “Northern Soul” and “Keep The Faith”. I instantly loved the words and the symbols, before I really knew what it was or what it meant - it just appealed for some reason.
The first soul records bought were probably Stax LPs, Otis Redding, Booker T & The MGs, Sam & Dave, from record fairs at the Garrion Hotel in Motherwell or from stalls at the Barras. I remember freeing a Lee Dorsey compilation from my uncle, held amongst Nolan Sisters and Perry Como's, which had Confusion, Holy Cow, Workin' In a Coalmine and Get out My Life Woman amongst others, and playing these tracks over and over. I picked up Chiffons and Four Tops LPs from the local library’s sale. I had friends who had good taste and who would point me in the right musical direction or lend me their records to listen to, all sorts of amazing things.
For me, I was just into music - the whole thing was about hearing more stuff, educating myself in what music was all about, what was out there, and what I liked. I would have been as happy with a recorded cassette, a mix tape by a pal, as I would have been with original vinyl. I didn’t start buying rare records until I was reaching my 30s, when I began making enough money from music to have more than I needed to get by - my first disposable income.
The first big record I bought was Ruby Andrews Just Loving You. I paid the grand total of £50 for it and I felt physically sick for a few days afterwards due to my extravagance. Once the record arrived in mint condition and I started playing it I felt great. Buying rare records just wasn’t an option before - I came from a very normal financially challenged background, then I was a student and then a musician, I never had any money - I wasn’t really that bothered about owning anything, I was more into knowing about things than owning them. Luckily, I had friends who had good taste, I was growing up at a good time and the music I got to hear, and got into, was mostly absolutely brilliant.
C.J : Were there good places in Glasgow to both buy and go and hear good soul and Northern Soul sounds?
G.L I could never be described as a soul aficionado, I’m into all sorts of music and I buy all sorts of records.  I know lots of people who could give a much more detailed and informed account of the real soul scene in Scotland in the 80s, 90s, and beyond. I’m just a guy in a band who’s been picking up the odd soul record from time to time.
From my limited point of view, apart from record fairs and the odd stall at the Barras or the Briggait, Glasgow wasn’t such a great place to pick up original 7”s. When I started buying rarer records it was mostly by sending a stamp addressed envelope and a subscription to dealers whose contact details you would find at the back of Record Collector.  I would be picking up a lot of Kent and Soul Supply compilations and from those you would usually compose your wants list. The first regular sales lists I got through were from John Anderson, John Manship, Pat Brady, Will Johnson, and Anglo American. Before YouTube and soundfiles, you had to rely on the dealer’s descriptions so, when buying blind, as I often did, you would be using your imagination a lot, sometimes crossing your fingers, and inevitably ending up with quite a few disappointments along the way, and the occasional winner.
Eventually some guys would send tapes and then CDs, and everything became a whole lot easier, much more so when the internet arrived.  
For soul sounds, Good Foot was the club that changed things for lots of people in Glasgow. Chris Geddes has already covered this in your last interview. It was THE place to hear rare 60s soul in the city for quite a number of years. It certainly expanded my knowledge of the types of records that were out there. They had a great bunch of DJs, resident and guests, it was very welcoming and inclusive although there was, at times, a slight edge in the air for one reason or another - but that’s Glasgow for you, I guess, welcoming and slightly edgy. I went through to the Groove Soul City club at the Spider’s Web in Edinburgh a couple of times and they were definitely working at a deeper level than Good Foot, far more obscure sounds and seriously rare records, but for the social side of it all, for me, it was a better night in Glasgow - but maybe only because I lived there and everything was more familiar.
C.J : So what’s been the latest Northern Soul record you picked up?
I recently picked up Got To Find A True Love by E.T. White and His Great Potential Band. It’s not strictly a northern soul record, it’s a loose soul/funk crossover type of thing, pretty rough and ready, but really cool and charming. It’s the kind of stuff I’m into at the moment.
C.J : It could be said that there’s more an emotional connection to soul music, rather than a strictly stylistic influence, in your music. Although, on the Lightships album, echoes of artists such as Curtis Mayfield’s seem to be heard. How do you think soul music has influenced your song writing?
Teenage Fanclub is a group that I play in, it’s what I do for a living, and I’m sure, there are soul influences contained deep within the music that I try to make. I’ve been listening to soul music since I was a teenager and I would guess that its influence is inevitable, although maybe not completely explicit or on the surface.
When we started touring, making mix tapes for the van, there were always soul tunes and northern soul tunes in the tracklistings. Soul/northern soul was definitely something that most people I knew knew about and would have been exposed to - we were from an industrial area, we all grew up in the 70s and 80s, it was almost unavoidable. If you listen closely enough to our music, maybe there’s a soul influence in some of the vocal harmonies, or maybe in the major 7th chords, or maybe in some of the lyrics, choices of instruments, bass lines or handclaps. But we’ve always been wary not to be too obvious about things, wary about pastiche.
It could be argued that an R&B/soul influence gave birth to swinging London, Beatlemania, and all that followed, it’s what separated the new wave of The Kinks, Beatles, Rolling Stones etc from the conservative granny sounds of your Tommy Steele’s and your Cliff Richards, and what essentially gave birth to 60s modernism, which in turn set up the next wave and the next wave and so on, until we end up here, in 2016, influenced by everything that went before. Also, I play bass in the group, and as a bass player I would say that it’s almost impossible not to be influenced by Motown’s James Jamerson, regardless of what type of music you might make. He is far too important in the history of bass guitar to ever lack relevance.
At the end of the day, regardless of major or minor influences, we’re a group from Lanarkshire in Scotland and we have to be true to our own context, our own era as much as we possibly can, do our own thing and express ourselves in our own way. Regarding the Lightships record, without a doubt, The Impressions and Curtis Mayfield were amongst the primary influences guiding the production but more so in the shimmering textures and the feel rather than the actual structures of the songs or the musical style of the record.
C.J : At 'Together', were looking forward to giving you a warm welcome. Wondered what kind of set you’ve got lined up for us?
Well I haven’t deejayed in quite some time so I’ll be making it up as I go along. My strategy is to start with a good record and follow that with another good record, and hopefully, if I keep doing that, it will all work out. Expect mostly 60s soul, mostly upbeat, Saturday night stuff, some well-known tunes with a few more personal, more obscure, choices thrown in. As I haven’t deejayed for a dance floor in a while it could be filed under ‘experimental' but, thankfully, the records will be doing all the work so it should be absolutely fine - with fingers crossed!
C.J : Northern Soul music still going strong. What do you reckon makes a great Northern Soul track and wondered what you thought the reasons were for the scene’s enduring appeal? 
Northern Soul is, I guess, an umbrella term to cover various styles, moods, even eras. These days, I usually go for moody mid-tempo tunes and early crossover records, loose and even messy things. But for me, the “classic" northern soul sound is based on the Four Tops template : upbeat Saturday night music with criss-cross vocal harmonies, punchy brass, baritone sax, floating vibraphones, underpinned by a driving beat. Unlike the majority of Motown productions, the classic northern soul record is maybe a little distorted in places, a little overcooked to tape, and this adds edge and grit, to the sweetness and the beauty, which makes it more vital, more like real life and, therefore, more meaningful to the listener.
It’s strong dance music to lose yourself in, to forget about your troubles, your job, your lack of a job, your limitations. It’s total positive energy from an era of absolute inequality. For me, things like The Precisions' If This Is Love, Jimmy Soul Clark's Sweet Darlin, The Valentinos' Sweeter Than The Day Before, The Steinways' You’ve Been Leadin' Me On, The Fabulous Peps' With These Eyes are examples of your classic northern soul record. But there are thousands. The strength, quality and sheer quantity of the music is where the appeal is, and that will never change.
These records were made for working class people to dance to, to feel equal, to feel loved and to feel free and, although times have changed, there is still a need for that.

Robert Peterson (Volumes) R I P

Message from Eddie Union  -- To all concerned. 
I'm letting you know that we lost a member of the Volumes. Our group member and brother, Robert Peterson was shot and killed in a home invasion, May 17th or 18th. His home had been broken into and car stolen numerous times. We begged him to move from that area. or get a dog or a gun. He has lived there since 1972, and didn't want to leave. Keep him and his family in your prayers. He will be greatly missed.    
Robert was a member of the group that played the Prestatyn Weekender a few years back. He was also a member of the Magnetics, including the time when the Volumes used that name for a short period.

Stuart Cosgrove, originally from Perth, was a fanzine writer on the northern soul scene before joining the black music paper Echoes, as a staff writer. He became media editor with the NME and a feature writer for a range of newspapers and magazines. A graduate of Hull University, he completed a PhD in modern American theatre history. In 2005 he was named Broadcaster of the Year in the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards and in 2012 he won numerous awards including a BAFTA and Royal Television Society award for Channel 4’s coverage of the London Paralympics 2012.

Soul Map Upgraded - New Features and Improvements

Just a shout about the latest upgrade to the Soul Map feature
Quite an extensive upgrade ...
1. New Marker Groups 
Map markers are now grouped, opening up this feature for many uses.
SoulMap markers can now be viewed and added into these various marker groups
Members location - Integrated with Profiles (only one per member) Venues - Current  Venues - Historical Labels, studios etc Record Shops These groups can be expanded so if there are some groups that you may think be useful additions then just let us know
 
2. Members Locations Markers Now Integrated with Profiles
The members locations are now integrated with the Profiles location field
eg if you enter an location on your profile (location setting) then it will also be picked up and added to the SoulMap automatically (if found) at the same time.
This has been done for all active members account with a location entered - you may need to check your own as it is an automatic process and so subject to errors if location details not clear
This has meant that there are now 4000+ active members location markers now showing in the Soul Map

3. All members can now add locations to any of the groups directly
All members can add their location plus any other markers. 
To add you just follow the 'browse to markers' link and then the  'add marker' will show in the top right of every marker list page
 
4. Future
Now this is in place it means the next wave of improvements will include more direct Event Guide integration and more

Ronnie Canada: From Cleveland Ohio to Watford

RONNIE CANADA  From Sly, Slick & Wicked to the Cleggy weekender
Ronnie Canada really is an 'international man of soul'. Starting out in Cleveland way back in the early1970's, he got his break in the music business with S.O.U.L. (acting as their roadie + sound & lighting technician). The group was centred around lead singer Larry Hancock and Ronnie has never forgotten the kindnesses that Larry showed him all those years ago. Back then Larry was already a veteran in the biz, having led the Intertains (Uptown recording artists) and written “Working On Your Case” for the O'Jays. When with the group, it was Ronnie's job to collect Beloyd (Taylor) each day and take him to the group's rehearsal session. It was Beloyd that gave Ronnie the belief that he could be a good singer himself, and set him on the path towards his later career. Ronnie continues to honour the memory of Larry Hancock by running a Facebook page that's dedicated to his appreciation. When S.O.U.L. broke up in the mid 70's, Larry Hancock helped form Truth (members: Larry Hancock, Al Boyd, Leo Green and Russell Evans). Ronnie was kept on (as their sound technician) and so got to further advance his musical skills.
By 1978, Ronnie was an important member of Cleveland based gospel outfit, the Hubbard Singers. He also secured a role in a hit stage play 'Singin & Shouting' with another member of the cast being Alltrina Grayson (later to sing with Bobby Womack). While he was in the play, he got word that members of the group Sly, Slick & Wicked wanted to speak with him. They talked and Ronnie soon found himself a member of the Cleveland based trio. The group landed a record deal with Carl Maduri's Sweet City and started rehearsing for an upcoming studio visit. Ronnie was selected as the lead singer on the song “All I Want Is You” and so spent some weeks learning & rehearsing it. However on the day the group went into the studio, with the song's composer Dunn Pearson acting as producer and arranger, group leader John Wilson decided he would assume lead vocal duties. So the track was recorded that way and the cuts were licensed by Epic in the US and released to a luke warm reaction. However, here in the UK, Modern Soul fans were soon searching out copies of the 45 and it quickly took on anthem status. Other tracks were cut by the group, Ronnie singing lead on at least one, but this failed to make it onto vinyl. So Ronnie moved on, spending some time in Hank Ballard's group the Midnighters.
Another opportunity soon presented itself though when the Blue Notes needed some new members after splitting from Harold Melvin. Group members Larry Brown & John Atkins went all the way back to the mid 60's (the group's “Get Out” period) and so had seen no reason to abandon their pedigree and give up the name. The group had already cut good tracks for Uni & Glades records (Florida: mid to late 70's) and were a popular live attraction when Ronnie joined their number. They had cut songs such as "Here I Am", "People Are Running Around" & "Standin' By You Girl", all of which soon found favour with British soul fans. One good gig the Blue Notes (with Ronnie as a member) played back then was at the Marco Polo Hotel & Resort on Miami Beach in 1982. In that period, he got to hang out with the likes of Rocky Mizell, Jimmy 'Bo' Horne and David Hudson (David being like a brother to him). Ronnie also got to record some solo tracks down in Miami with Clearance 'Blowfly' Reid and Willie Clarke, but these failed to escape from the tape vaults. However, Harold Melvin wasn't happy that two sets of Blue Notes were out there and so he took legal action against the Florida based outfit. Wanting to move on, the guys changed their name to Caviar and with Ronnie on lead vocals they cut “Never Stop Lovin' You” for Survivor (1982). They also laid down further tracks at that time but these didn't escape until an album was put out by Boogie Time Records (France: 2009).
After the Caviar experience, he returned to Cleveland (1983) and took on a long residency at the Native Son club. His next big role came when he joined the group Omari. Another member of the group was Vince Broomfield and via him, Ronnie got to know the whole Broomfield family (which included singing stars Eugene & Dee Dee Wilde). Splitting their time between Philly & Florida, the group kept very busy. At one stage they toured with Betty Wright as her backing band. In their own right, they had the popular “After Loving You” out on Bound Sound Records (1983) which met with good reaction from soul fans as far apart as the UK and South America. The group's popularity in Sth America was such that they got to appear on a top TV show in Colombia. After Omari split, Ronnie hooked up with a version of the Drifters and the group played gigs right across Spain, including a 6 month period in Majorca. Returning to the US, he went solo and cut "I Don't Believe It" which escaped on AJ's Records out of Florida (1987). Copies of this 12” sold well in the UK and that once again raised Ronnie's profile (despite his name being shown on the label as Roney Canada). This track has stood the test of time well and has been included on quite a few soul compilation albums released in the last 8 years. Needing steady work, Ronnie went back into the group environment and returning to Europe, he started singing with the Platters and American Drifters. These outfits were a top live draw across Europe but Ronnie wanted to get back into the recording side of things. So, he started to collaborate with people in the house & garage worlds, cutting for Tomohawk (“The Power's In The Music” & “Tell The World” – 1993/94) and Shaboom (“Can't Get Enough Of Your love” – 2004). This work also resulted in him being used by various similar acts, Ronnie adding his vocals to tracks by the likes of Fabio Tosti, Audioplayerz and (more recently) Darockwildas.
That just about brings us up to date. Ronnie, who now resides in Watford, keeps up his heavy schedule in the music world. He has just returned from Holland where he performed at the Bevrijdingsfestival. Next up for him is an appearance at the big 6T's Cleethorpes Soul Weekender. He will be entertaining the crowd in the Modern Soul room at the weekender on the Sunday afternoon (approx 4pm), he's sure to turn the room into a 'land of a 1000's dances'. So, if you are going along to this iconic event, don't miss the chance to catch Ronnie performing live. He's also still active in the studio and continues to work on numerous recording projects One of these (that is about to escape in a few weeks time) being the 'Edwin Starr EDM Remixes 2016' album (on which he sings). So the musical mystery tour that Ronnie has been on for 40 plus years has taken him from Cleveland, across the whole of the USA, onto South America and now Europe. Who knows what lays ahead of him, only the future will show that.

California Soul - Funk & Soul from the Golden State - Cd Review

California Soul - Funk & Soul from the Golden State 1967-1976 CD BGPD 298
First of all, I'm probably not the best individual to review this album, as my knowledge of the Funk genre is at its best limited - perhaps this will give a more balanced review let's see!
A varied selection of tempos from the West Coast spanning the period of 1967 - 1976, as you would probably, there is a fair degree of funk orientated tunes from a selection of respected Californian purveyors such as Dore, Money & Pzazz amongst others. I admit that well over half of the content is new to myself……
Let's kick off with the product I am familiar with; The Ballads had a relatively long 20-year career by West Coast standards having first formed in 1965 and originally cutting product for Vee-Jay. This time featuring their song "Butterfly" AKA "I wish I knew,"- the problem is, as a long standing fan of the original take on Mickey Stevenson's Venture imprint, I'm afraid for me the rerecording featuring a new lead and a faster tempo doesn't quite match up, especially considering the original vocal is very reminiscent of the wonderful David Ruffin.  In fact, very similar indeed - none the less a good version of a song, penned by Leon Ware & Susaye Green, this later version has slightly diluted lead vocal and an over complicated music track that tries too hard and detracts from the song. But I am unashamedly biased towards the original Venture version, clearly the group felt differently releasing this version on at least two further occasions on Music City and later on the Balja imprint.
The next track I am familiar with – ‘Warm Excursion’ - "Hang Up" on Paul Gayton's Pzzaz imprint. Being a fan of the Hammond organ, this appeals to me and although I don't recall hearing this played to a dance floor, I would be surprised if it hadn't been featured in the past and would probably appeal to the newer funk biased soul venues without upsetting the "4 beats to the bar" traditionalists, in a similar groove to Frankie Crocker's "Ton of Dynamite."
Apparently a number of groups recorded under the Choice of Colour moniker "If she wants to go" was recorded for Money records in 1974. This is one of choice cuts from this collection and sounds just right for now even with its tricky tempo.
The Entertainers IV will be known by many fans of their Dore releases such as "My Garden of Eden" & "Don't Look Back" but this time we focus on "Just ain't my day." 
As you would expect, its well up to their usual high standard and will appeal to group collectors along with the dancers, with its less obvious tempo & great backing vocals they certainly could deliver the goods.

Brenda George's Kent recording of "What you see is what you’re gonna get," again sounds just right for the funk edged northern soul crowd, with pleading vocals on a super backing track- it's an up tempo West Coast winner.
 ZZ Hills "Think People" is your typical song with a message from the early 1970's - pleasant but not ground-breaking.
I have been a fan of Little Johnny Hamilton since first hearing his epic "Oh how I love you" (Dore). Therefore, I was looking forward to hearing the two tracks (A & B sides) on this album but was frankly left cold by these recordings for the Watts Way label "The Git Down Parts" 1 & 2 when I am afraid part one would have been more than enough! It's probably ultra-rare & there's a very good reason for that. 
Other tracks including The Calif. Soul Explosion & Jesse & Anita fared no better to my senses I'm afraid.
The Soul Sensations Music City recording from 1973, got things back on track with "When I had my baby" a really nice ballad, with sparse backing, a committed, if young sounding vocal with the tempo slightly increasing momentarily towards the end…. before returning to its former - excellent stuff!
The Natural Resources "Funky with my stuff"(Dore) is pleasant enough without achieving the desired effect. Although I'm familiar with the recordings of Eddie Horan is "I'm gonna speak out" is new to me and maybe a little left field but none the worse for that and has gone straight on the wants list.... anybody?
Eleanor Rigby- "Is it worth it all" is a pleasant vocal on lightweight almost demo-like backing track that as grown on me over a number of listening sessions.


In summary a game of two halves, one soulful, melodic & polished, with the other half sometimes messy with an overabundance of wah wah self-indulgence… perhaps I'm just not funky enough!

Secret Stash Records - No Longer A Secret

This I'm sure will be of interest to members on Soulsource, you maybe aware of Minneapolis based Secret Stash Records a contemporary recording studio and record company formed in 2009, they release new and classic Soul/Blues/Latin/African/R'n'B etc. they also hold the rights and full licence for the legendary Chicago based Leaner Brothers One-derful, M-Pac, Mar-V-Lus, Toddlin' Town, Midas and gospel label Halo.
This was starring everyone in the face so when I became aware of the label and this awesome find I contacted label owner Mr Eric Foss way back last year, after the first contact it went quiet so I tried again with a few ideas and bang it has resulted in me becoming the UK hub for Secret Stash basically marketing/promotion/retailing and A&R for future releases, Eric sent me some 250 sound files of the existing Masters tapes, you can imagine I freaked out and spent the next 12 hours going through stuff, alternate takes on the likes of The Inspirations - 'Your Wish Is My Command' - Midas, The Ringleaders - 'Baby What Has Happened To Our Love; - M-Pac, Alt takes of Big Daddy Rogers - 'I'm A Big Man', unissued material some of which has been put out on the Albums and 45's, finished masters of Mousie And The Traps. Jimmie And The Entertainers, Admirations, Harold Burrage, Otis Clay, Beverley Shaffer, The Blenders, McKinley Mitchell, Alvin Cash, The Sharpees and pretty much all the Northern related tunes from the labels, there are some missing masters but not many, some of the tapes are MP3's of sessions and I keep finding some very tasty tunes indeed. Little snippet of information according to the studio work sheet and written on the tape box of The Ringleaders -'All Of My Life' is simply 'Sweet Little Girl' which if you go and play it makes sense.

The attention to detail Secret Stash put in to these releases is second to none, fully licenced from the Leaner Family estate, no disc dubs, dues paid and 100% legit, there are some really nice releases coming out with the next one being simply off the scale due out in about 12 weeks, Chalky has kindly offer to do a far more detailed feature on the project nearer to release date so thanks in advance to him and Mike at SS. All current releases are now available in the UK making for a much quicker delivery of purchases, there is a pre release reserve list with over 70 people requesting to reserve, no payment required as yet it just secures a copy. There is a Facebook group please feel free to join - SECRET STASH NORTHERN SOUL RELEASES UK DIVISION.

Mainstream Modern Soul - Kent - Cd Review

Mainstream Modern Soul 1969-1976  - Various Artists (Mainstream Records)
Mainstream had many guises over its life.  Started by Bob Shad in 1964, it initially focussed on issuing Jazz and Soundtrack LP’s, by the mid-sixties it moved onto its second musical phase as it found success with Psych, Garage and Rock bands.  This carried on till the early 70s when its focus again changed, this time to a more Soul/Funk and eventually Disco leaning and it’s this period that this CD focusses on.
The set starts off with Linda Perry’s “I Can’t Give You Up”, which is the first of three tracks by her.  Perry’s first release was the Eddie Billups penned “I Need Someone” on the small Chattanooga label HELPP. This was picked up by Shad who released it on Mainstream for national distribution and it became a minor hit.  This success lead to Perry being brought to New York for further recording session.  “I Can’t Give You Up” was one of the unreleased songs from that session and it’s a great bit of sassy funky female Soul; tight backing singers, rolling rhythm, burping horns and a catchy chorus it’s a shame it was left in the can as I think it’s a good example of the style of releases that were hitting the top of the R&B charts at the time.  “It’s All In The Back Of Me Now” also from that session was one side of her second and last single for Mainstream, it’s a swaying piece Jazzy Soul, which has had numerous plays on the Soul Scene and should be quite well known.  The last of the Perry tracks “Ain’t Nobody Gonna Make Me” was another previously unreleased song, which for me has more of a popular appeal than the other two and sounds as if under the right circumstances, could have also been a hit.
In a similar vein to the Linda Perry’s opening track is another sassy song, this time by Ellering Harding.  “To Whom It May Concern (All I Need)” is one of the two album only tracks included on the CD.  It sounds like a cross between a James Bond theme and a Blaxploitation film score, odd that that sounds I do think it works.  As with many of Bob Shad’s LP projects no expense was spared, with the musician credits reading like a who’s who of best Jazz talent of that time.  The other album only track is Alice Clark’s “Don’t You Care”, which is a well know classic on both the Soul and Jazz scenes.  The song also gained a retrospective single release on Acid Jazz.
Randy Brown’s musical output has been well documented, especially his Parachute/Chocolate City recordings.  After his solitary release on the Stax subsidiary Truth, he released two singles on IX Chains imprint and “It Ain’t Like It Used To Be” is included here.  It’s a great 70s dancer that was heard at many a Modern Soul event up and down the country in the late 80’s/early 90’s.  The other Brown track is “I’m on Sick Leave” it’s a more funkier affair and not as instant as “Ain’t…”, saying that it’s still a nice record.  Both these tracks and their flips initially saw a local release on the tiny Memphis Label, Black Magic.

Along with Randy Brown, another IX Chains release that saw plenty of plays up and down the country was “The Steptones – Let The People Talk”, a quality strings and things dancer from the Detroit group who recorded “Lonely One” on Diamond Jim.  Staying with string laden mid 70s dancers is “The Dramatics – No Rebate On Love”.  Following the groups split in 1972, Elbert Wilkins and Wee Gee Howard broke away and toured with a newly formed group under the same Dramatics name.  They eventually landed a record deal with Mainstream and their first release was “No Rebate…” became a hit, breaking into the top 30 of the R&B charts in 1975.  Legal proceedings from the “old” Dramatics, fronted by Ron Banks, lead to a name change to “The Dramatic Experience”.  They released one further single on Mainstream before parting ways.  In a similar feel to “The Steptones” and “The Dramatics” is “Words Of Wisdom – You’re A Friend Of Mine” a pleasant enough dancer, but nothing earth shattering.  Also popular at a similar time was “The Fantastic Puzzles - Come Back” on New Moon, a lively up-tempo feel-good number, quite odd as it’s all about the lead singer’s girl leaving and him pleading for her to return.
Johnny Gilliam started recording in the mid 60’s and released two singles on IX Chains in “75 & 76” under the name J.G. Lewis.  Following some success of his initial single, “What Am I Going To Do” was his follow up release.  It was another song that was well received by dancers as it had that “Modern Soul” Vibe.  Also included, is the previously unreleased track “I’m The One Who Loves You”.  It’s a good slightly funky southern styled swayer which Gilliam sings well.  The track itself sounds as if it’s a finished song rather than a demo and it’s a shame it never got out the can.  More southern styled soul with Calvin Arnold’s “Satisfy My Woman”, another singer who released a number of singles good on Venture and Sonday before landing at IX Chains.  It’s a nice mid-tempo brass infused number which reached the lower ranks of the R&B top 100.  “Bobby Earl Williams - That’s The Way She Is” was the secondrelease on IX Chains and is an enjoyable brassy 70’s dancer with a funky edge.
Changing the style to more emotive soul is Almeta Lattimore’s anthemic swayer “These Memories”, known by probably everyone and was recently reissued.  Charles Beverly’s “Stop And Think A Minute” was his first release as an artist and what song to begin your career with, it starts off slow and builds all the way through.  McArthur’s “It’s So Real” is an inclusion from the Brown Dog label and is a great piece of Sweet/Group soul, with Willie Jones of the Detroit Group 21ST on lead.  Lee Bates had eight releases on the New Orleans Instant label from 1969 to 1975 and “(What Am I Gonna Do) What Am I Gonna Say” is a nice piano lead mid/down-tempo dancer which ended up his last release on the label.  It must have been a bit of a local hit as it was picked up by IX Chains for national distribution.  I don’t think it did anything nationally as I don’t think it got past the S/S demo stage, as I’ve never an IX Chains issue of this release.
Veteran singer Lenny Welch arrived at Mainstream after a having a couple of releases on Atco.  “A Hundred Pounds Of Pain” was the last of his three singles and although it’s a jaunty number, it doesn’t really do anything for me, but I can understand why it had a following from dancers in the 70’s.  Another song in a similar category is Nia Johnson’s “Plain Out Of Luck”, which to me is just an average Disco record.
All the tracks generally flow well with the exception of the two tracks by “The Jackey Beavers Show”.  Originally issued on Beavers’ Jabar label, this is a fine double sider was picked up by Mainstream for national distribution.  Fantastic as these tracks are, they’re a 1968 release and although there are only two years difference between these and the next oldest tracks the different in style is quite apparent and for me doesn’t really fit into the whole theme of the CD.
Finally comes Sarah Vaughan’s “I Need You More (Than Ever Now)”.  I’ve never really been a big fan of her singing, but this mid-tempo number was a nice treat to finish off the CD.
The compilation duties were fulfilled by Ady Croasdell and as always the booklet is full of artist pictures and label scans with each track getting a detailed write up.  When I first received the disc, I thought playing it would be a pleasant enough way to while away 80 odd minutes.  Once played, memories of a misspent you at Modern Soul nights in late eighties/early nighties came flooding back.  It’s a very enjoyable CD, with a few blips, but that’s just me being picky and I give it a star rating of 4 out of 5.

Lycra-Clad-Soul-Boys Ready To Roll!

In April 2015 our very good friend Paul Thrower was diagnosed with MND. This is a particularly random illness which strikes without warning and for no real reason. As you'll remember the ice bucket challenges have dramatically raised awareness, but there still needs to be far more research into how & why this disease works.Paul is facing this disease with great humour & bravery in his usual pant swinging & retro sock style, which we all know is part of his character!

On the 12th Dec 2015 whilst having a few pints at "Seriously Soulful" in Bristol, John Pearson, Chris Anderton & Dave Lucas had the brilliant idea of cycling for MND awareness from Dab of Soul Nantwich to Seriously Soulful Bristol.The event will be over 2 days (13th-14th May 2016) covering 140 miles. Chris Anderton, Ian Bulloch, Dave Lucas, Steve McColgan, John Pearson, Jack Phillips, Kev Rodgers, Steve Wagstaff & Phil Wainwright are the Soulful lycra clad participants.

The Independents - Complete Wand Recordings - Cd Review

THE INDEPENDENTS – JUST AS LONG – THE COMPLETE WAND RECORDINGS - CD REVIEW
“Group/ Smooth Soul, Soul” is style description that the Independents fall under in to in the ‘All Music Guide to Soul’, which goes on to add that they “specialised in almost melodramatic, overwrought, but perfectly performed love songs”, something that is clearly defined in the twenty-two tracks of this recently issued Kent cd.
Perhaps not one of the top acts to come out of Chicago, they just manged a couple of pages in Robert Pruter’s superb book ‘Chicago Soul, but they do ooze quality throughout  the cd that combines their complete Wand singles collection, all their album only tracks, plus a Tom Moulton re-mix of ‘I Love You, Yes I Do’.
The majority of the tracks are written by Charles Jackson, brother of the more famous Jesse, and Marvin Yancy, considered the best to emerge from the Chicago based Jerry Butler Songwriters Workshop and alongside Helen Curry and Maurice Jackson, both solo acts in their own right, they were to become the Independents.
For those who like their music to grab them by the scruff of the neck and propel them onto the dance floor, then this cd is certainly not for you, but if you want to switch on the stereo late at night and settle down with a nice glass of wine, then this might just tickle your taste buds.
For me the stand out track is the classy ‘Can’t Understand It’, which for me would have been the perfect opener rather the two ballads which fail to grab the attention, but renowned for their ‘Smooth Soul’ style, you know what to expect when you buy this cd.
There are a couple of more up-tempo tracks – ‘I Love You, Yes I Do’, the disco oriented ‘Arise and Shine’ and ‘One Woman, Do Right Man’, which they perform admirably, but the group appear to be more at home with the slower sides, the Helen Curry led R&B chart topper ‘Leaving Me’ a prime example. How she wasn’t more successful I don’t know.
For the soul collectors who want complete recordings of as many artists as possible, then Kent seldom, if ever, fail to please and come out on top again with this one. Booklet notes by Tony Rounce, with the usual artist label illustrations.

Searching for the Real James Brown - Book Review

‘Kill 'Em and Leave: Searching for the Real James Brown’ by James McBride. Published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson ISBN-13: 978-1474603638.
When it comes to the listening side of soul music, there are still one or two avenues down which I have yet to wander, however, I enjoy nothing better than reading about the wide spectrum of sounds and more so the artists who created that music, whether it be in those dedicatedly produced fanzines of yesteryear, or the numerous books that find their way onto the marketplace.
Although there have been numerous books written about “The Godfather of Soul”, “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business”, or whatever title you care to bestow on him, I had only ever pencilled ‘a James Brown book’ onto my ‘must read’ list. That changed with the arrival of “Kill 'Em and Leave: Searching for the Real James Brown” by James McBride.
At times it helps knowing little about the subject matter as you can then approach a book with a completely open mind and of James Brown I knew nothing more than the basics, so I began turning the pages ready to learn more about the man with countless nicknames, but only one truly unique sound.
Brown was born in 1933, near Barnwell in South Carolina, going on to win some forty-four gold records and countless awards from the music industry, whilst amassing, and losing, and amassing again, a small fortune, that after his death was to cause countless problems for those left in at the forefront of it all.
As you turn the pages of James McBride’s well written and never boring book, Brown comes across as a man who trusts only a few, something that was far from being a negative approach, as a very high percentage of his fellow entertainers were pure and simply ripped off by all and sundry.
Banks were high on Brown’s ‘no-go’ list, with his hard earned money ending up buried in back gardens, or hidden under hotel carpets, with the singer re-visiting the latter, sometimes a year later in order to retrieve the thousands of dollars that many had been walking across in the intervening period.  All this of course did little to help when he came up against the might of the IRS.
Money was also a huge problem following his death, when everyone wanted their share, from long forgotten family members to greedy lawyers despite his will stating that his estimated $100 million fortune be used to educate poor children in South Carolina. As yet, they are still waiting!

But what of the book in question? Did I find the ‘real James Brown’ at the end of its 256 pages?
Difficult to say really. I certainly learned a bit more about the man himself and McBride, an accomplished musician, and a noted author, takes you through the troubled times of a true music legend, but to be honest, the book tells you more about Brown’s entourage and backing band members, one who ended up living on this side of the Atlantic, than the man himself. These stories in themselves give this book an added edge.
It does create a shadowy picture of a troubled man, but a man who knew what he wanted and where he wanted to go, a man who knew how to work his audience – arrive at the venue, onto the stage, do his set and back on the road – “kill ‘em and leave” was indeed his catch phrase.
Should you want a biography, detailing the life and times of James Brown, then have a look at the other fourteen books on the man, but if you want to get below the surface a little, get the story from those who were there, those who at the end of the line suffered through no fault of their own, then you will enjoy this title. Unlike many autobiographies or biographies, it is neither boring, nor dull and it does give an insight into the complicated nature of Brown’s life. I suppose in a way, it does, in the end reveal the real James Brown.
So, how do I rate it? For its simplicity, the recollections of those who were around the singers as he took the music scene by storm and for it being an enjoyable read, I would give it 4 out of 5. With just a little bit more about the man himself, it would probably have edged a 5

Joey Irving & Just Us - There's a Man on SOUL7

Joey Irving & Just Us was a Canadian act that released a couple of 45s on various small labels but never really attained any notoriety. ‘There’s a Man’ is a cover of the original version by Leroy lane & the Upstairs Maids, an uptempo dancer that hints to the funky side of Northern Soul. The original issue of this 7” rarity was pressed in Belgium on the Baltic label, supposedly because Baltic was a label that pressed "everything nobody else wanted to press" (those are the label owner's very words!) such as Flemish chanson and elevator music.

One of Baltic's contacts was a businessman from Canada who'd fly over every 6 months with a suitcase of master tapes looking for deals. One day he brought along a reel by Joey Irving & Just Us, who was unable to get a contract in the US or Canada. Baltic took a chance, pressed them up, and issued it in Belgium with a picture sleeve on their Baltic label and also their subsidiary Golden Music. As you can imagine, funky soul stompers didn’t really go down very well with the chanson and elevator crowd, and the record bombed. Very few copies are known to this day, with original copies reaching several hundred £££.

...made two studio albums in the 1980s. The first Lately was released in 1985 and was a dramatic musical departure from the lush Philadelphia Soul of his previous efforts.
