The Holidays - You Make Me Weak (Take 2) b/w I'm So Glad - Soul Junction SJ539

Press Release: The Holidays  “You Make Me Weak/I’m So Glad (That I Met You)   SJ539
Release Date: Monday November 20th 2017

There were several groups within the Detroit music scene that shared the name of ‘The Holidays’. From the 1950’s through to the late 1960’s our version of The Holidays who took their name from a group members car, a 1954 Oldsmobile ‘Holiday’, would record for the Star-x, Markie, Master and Holiday record Labels. Founding member James Holiday would also briefly pursue a solo career with releases on the Markie, Syco and Blue Rock labels respectively.

In 1969 James joined by his brother Jack, a baritone saxophonist and the former leader of the band within influential Detroit DJ ‘Frantic’ Ernie Durham’s legendary Gold Room at the 20 Grand Theatre.  The brothers together, with Maurice White and former Contours member Joe Billingslea formed ‘The New Holidays’ who recorded the ‘Popcorn’ Wylie produced song “Maybe So, Maybe No”   (Soul Hawk 1008). This current in demand 45 featured “If I Only Knew” on the flipside, an excellent cover version of a previous Jimmy (Soul) Clark recording “If I Only Knew Then (What I Know Now)” This was recorded at a later session to “Maybe So, Maybe No” and featured a slightly different line up with Joe Billingslea making way for a youthful Elliot Smith.

By 1972 The Holidays found themselves without a label, so they formed their own, Marathon Records. Their initial release was the excellent double sider “I’m So Glad (That I Met You)/Too Many Times” (Marathon 257). Both songs were written by James Holland and Sylvester Potts another former member of the Motown group ‘The Contours’ and were recorded under the artist name of ‘The Fabulous Holidays.
Into 1973 and their next release was the soulful ballad “Getting Kind Of Serious” (Marathon 18475) a Fritz Hale and Fredrick Charles Hawkins composition backed with an instrumental version. Followed by “Ego Tripping” (Marathon 18475) an upbeat funky little mover backed with the ballad “Lazy Day” written by James Holland, Anthony Hawkins and Fritz Hale.”
During 1975 The Holidays resumed their acquaintance with former record store owner Ronald Holmes a collaboration which led to the release of another excellent double sider “This Is Love b/w The Love We Share” on the Rob-Ron (RR-75) label. “The Love We Share” was recorded twice. Firstly as the issued 45 version under the shortened title of “The Love We Share” and as an unissued longer version under the title of “(Been Together Too Long) The Love We Share” with slightly different lyrics. During 1976 a further Holland/Holmes collaboration saw the release of the message song “Procrastinate (Why Do We)” (Ron-Hol 76). After this release Ronald Holmes and the Holidays parted company.

During late 1976 into 1977 the Holland brothers wrote and produced two further songs which they recorded with Charles Hawkins (a founding member of the Psychedelic Rock and Funk Band, ‘Black Merda’) The up tempo dance track “You Make Me Weak” and the less frenetic “Lost Love” although never issued at the time both songs can be found on the recently released Soul Junction cd album “Getting Kind Of Soulful” (SJCD5012). A later discovery of an alternative take of “You Make Me Weak” (Take 2) is now available on vinyl for the first time backed with their uptempo dancer “I’m So Glad (That I Met You)” The Motorcity continues to yield its long lost legacy.

Billy 'Stix' Nicks Motown Drummer RIP

Billy Nicks Passed recently
Nicks and “The Rhythm Rockers” came into their own on the summer of 1954 (still existing and lead by Nicks). The original Rhythm Rockers line up consisted of: Billy “Stix” Nicks (drums, vocals, band leader), Junior Walker (saxophone) and Fred Patton (piano, vocals).
Billy “Stix” Nicks played and recorded on Motown with “Jr. Walker and The All Stars” for the 1965 LP release, “Roadrunner”, on songs: “How Sweet Is To Be Loved By You”, “Pucker Up Buttercup” and title track “Roadrunner”. Unfortunately, due to record company and production issues Nicks never received documented credits or royalties for the Motown “Roadrunner” release.

Strictly does Northern at Blackpool but looks strictly em

Strictly ‘does’ Northern Soul at Blackpool this weekend , but  this trailer suggests it will be Strictly embarrassing and a missed opportunity . Im not ashamed to reveal myself as a regular viewer of SCD , which at its best is a celebration of dance , sparkle, fun,, and hopefully achievement . This trailer was aired on the BBC2 It Takes Two.., and  described by John Gilkinson Creative Choreography Director as :
“ a great opportunity to create a bit of a battle between the Ballroom dancers and the ‘Northern Souler’s’ . It looks like they have pulled in Levant  Mc Clean to suggest some credibility which it looks to lack on both music choice and dance style. A real missed opportunity by the BBC /SCD to fuse the countries weekly TV dance fest with some of us who have been embracing the power of dancing for years. Don’t shoot the messenger on this.
For those of you who are not Strictly viewers Id put in a case for you checking out the show for the superb orchestra of Dave Arch and his soulful singers. Tommy Blaize ,Lance Ellington, Andrea Grant and Hayley Sanderson pull out some fantastic covers over the years . Band leader Dave Arch is reported to have played piano in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and he continues to play jazz piano at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club with vocalist Madeline Bell.

A vinyl-only collection comprising 14 outstanding stompin’ soul dancers from Los Angeles.
The Mirwood label’s second release was Jackie Lee’s ‘The Duck’, a soul swinger that became a big hit and established the Mirwood sound. The house team of producer Fred Smith, arranger James Carmichael and songwriter Sherlie Matthews, along with contributions from veteran singer-songwriters Bob Relf and Earl Nelson (Bob & Earl) made uptempo soul perfection and they played that beat throughout 1965 and 1966.
Although more US chart action occurred with the Olympics and Bob & Earl, much of the Mirwood team’s superlative work fell on deaf American ears. It was the British soul aficionados of the early 70s who discovered these masterpieces to play on their burgeoning Northern Soul scene. The dancers revelled in the relentless beats, pleading vocals and sassy female backing.
Virtually any Jackie Lee track was a worthy contender, especially the soul dance classic ‘Do The Temptation Walk’, the master tape discovery ‘Anything You Want (Any Way You Want It)’, and the anthemic ‘Oh, My Darlin’’. Bob & Earl’s hottest number was actually the backing track to Bob’s speedy ‘My Little Girl’, discovered as an accidental UK LP cut in the late 60s. Under the same alias, Bobby Garrett, Bob had another monster sound with ‘I Can’t Get Away’. Ex-Ike Turner sideman Jimmy Thomas arrived at Mirwood in 1966 where Bob Relf recorded him on his own song ‘Where There’s A Will (There’sA Way)’. Jimmy brought the Ikettes along with him; the company switched their name to the Mirettes for the Sherlie Matthews-penned ‘I Wanna Do Everything For You Baby’ and others. Sherlie also composed the stomping ‘Mine Exclusively’ and ‘The Same Old Thing’ for the Olympics and ‘Don’t Pretend’ for the Belles, a studio group comprising of herself along with sisters Brenda and Patrice Holloway.
Another Los Angeles stable under the auspices of Henry “Hank” Graham threw the Performers’ ‘I Can’t Stop You’ into the mix and renamed singer Jimmy Conwell as Richard Temple for a 45 that epitomises Northern Soul, ‘That Beatin’ Rhythm’; a credo for a cult. More indie productions came from Eddie LaShae with the Sheppards’ redoubtable ‘Stubborn Heart’ and Sonny Knight’s production of Curtis Lee on ‘Is She In Your Town?’.
Altogether 14 vital mid-60s dance records that demonstrate why Mirwood is a byword for the best in Northern Soul.

Afrodisia - New 45 & Interview from Cordial Recordings

News from Cordial Records all about their next upcoming 45 release and an interview with Darnell Summers (brother of Bill) from the group Afrodisia.
First off is news that being released very soon (18 Nov 2017) is an unreleased single by Afrodisia (details below) followed by both an unreleased album and a re-issue of their previous album.

AFRODISIA  - Malik  - Cordial - CORD 7004
‘Malik’ is an unreleased song that was recorded in the early 1980s and features legendary percussionist Bill Summers & internationally renowned guitarist Michael Koschorreck amongst the players. The sprightly jazz dancer keeps the pressure high with a strong lead which culminates with a series of male and females harmonies to die for at the end. For the first time ever ‘A Fool No Longer’ is now available on 7″ vinyl after originally being included on a German rock compilation in 1981.

Cordial Records have also pushed out an interview with Darnell Summers, a preview follows below along with a link to the interview in full
Afrodisia
an interview with Darnell Summers
Afrodisia were a band that formed in Worms, Germany in 1978 and ran through to the mid-1980s. The band’s leader was Darnell Stephen Summers and was formed featuring a cross collective of US Germany based soldiers and local German musicians. They released one album ‘Elephant Sunrise’ in  1980 on Comma Records which features the phenomenal ‘Sugar Free.’ We are proud to be re-releasing this album in March 2018.  Cordial Recordings will also be releasing an unissued album from 1981 towards the end of 2018, which features ‘Malik’ the first single from the group. On the flip for the first time on 7″ vinyl is the soulful funk bomb in ‘A Fool No Longer,’ which was originally featured on rock compilation ‘Rock Aus Der Alten Schule’ in 1981. We interviewed Darnell to capture the history of himself and the band.
Darnell you were born in Detroit, but which year were you born?
I was born in July 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. What’s interesting is that it’s a couple of miles from the Ambassador Bridge and the Ambassador Bridge goes over the river to Canada. Had my mother just gone across the bridge I’d be Canadian. Detroit is a border town and I didn’t recognise the significance of that until actually just recently what kind of dynamics are involved in being a border town. Certainly in retrospect when I think about my early life the fact that we lived near the border with Canada played a very significant role in my life.
Are you the eldest?
Yes, I’m the oldest. My brother and I are born eleven months apart. When I say that to people they raise their eyebrows, we’re not a year apart we’re eleven months apart. He was born on June 27th, 1948 and I was born 9th July 1947.
Did your parents introduce you to music?
Yes initially. My mother, she had a plan on how she wanted to educate her children. She’s from Louisiana, a place that’s rich with musical history. She did not want her children to grow up in the Jim Crow segregated south. That’s what motivated her to come up to Michigan. My father came up first and she followed him. She had a plan and part of that plan was I guess was undoubtedly give us a good cultural education. We were fortunate to go to a private Catholic school and get an academic education. My brother and I were lucky to learn the piano during those years.
When was Bill’s introduction to percussion?
That’s a good question! There was a guy by the name of Emmet, I don’t remember his last name. We moved from Detroit in the early 60s to the suburbs and a place called Inkster. We moved into a new house and we had a fireplace there in the family room. My brother was friends with a guy by the name of Emmet and Emmet had a penchant for going to house parties and bringing his bongos along. He was friends with my brother. One day I noticed that my brother had a pair of bongos’ right there at the fireplace. Emmet must have had a tremendous impact on him. I think that it was at that point we were in our early teens, maybe a little bit earlier, maybe my brother was 13 or 14. I just remember those bongos being on the fireplace. Bill played the piano, but he got into playing the flute, that’s another long story. He got so good that he was going out to the clubs of Detroit and playing underage in the clubs with a couple of other underage guys from the neighbourhood. I used to drive him around. He became a pretty good player playing the flute. He had good success at doing that while in High School. To make a long story short after High School he went out to California and continued to play the woodwinds. He picked up the saxophone also and continued to play the flute. From there he went on to New York to play on some recordings with the Bar Kays. He had his instruments in his car and somebody broke in to steal his instruments. From that point onwards he went into percussion 100% that’s how I understand the story. It wasn’t until the 70s when he concentrated on being 100% a percussionist.
Did you ever play together in a group?
Not until I came to Germany and formed my own group. I’m trying to think now. Had we ever played together, no we hadn’t. We didn’t collaborate together until around 1980 when Afrodisia were doing an album, which was our second album or what we wanted to be our second album. He’d already had success with the Headhunters and all of that. He came over and we asked him to play on the record, which he did. That was the first time that I had the experience and pleasure of collaborating with my brother on a joint project. After that he played with my band and I also accompanied him on certain projects that he had.

The Chairmen Of The Board (Featuring Ken Knox): “Words Left Unsaid” Liner Notes.

When one of America’s most evergreen soul groups, The Chairmen Of The Board, collaborates with one of Philadelphia’s most prolific song writing teams, The Steals Brothers, who in turn are aided and abetted by one of Detroit’s most respected producers and arrangers McKinley Jackson, then you just know that the end product is going to be something that’s an extra bit special.

Back in 1967, The Chairmen Of The Board became the flagship act of the newly formed Holland/Dozier/Holland inspired Invictus/Hotwax labels. As the 1970’s dawned, they scored a string hits with “Give Me Just A Little More Time,” You Got Me Dangling On A String,” etc which brought the group international acclaim while their 1972 outing “Elmo James” (although a US-non hit) also becoming a chart hit with their European fans. In later years the group became a headline act within the Carolina Beach Music Scene, with their 2002 Surfside records outing, “Bless Your Heart,” becoming a highly collectable classic. Sadly original group leader General Norman Johnson passed away in 2010, and at his request fellow Board member Ken Knox continues to lead the group to this day, being ably assisted by new group members Thomas Hunter and Brandon Stevens and a "Hot" six-piece backing band, The Executives.

In 2017 Ken Knox’s Chairmen Of The Board called upon The Steals Brothers/McKinley Jackson’s Mac-Mer-Mel Production Co. to record the upbeat song, “All I Need Is You Tonight,” released as a down-load-only as the lead song for this CD album project on their MoPhilly International Records label. “All I Need Is You Tonight” is a song first written for Arthur Prysock (Released on Old Town Records in 1976) by respected Philly wordsmiths Mervin “Mystro” and Melvin “Lyric” Steals whose extensive song writing catalogue also includes the 1972 Atlantic records million seller, “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love,” which they wrote for another hit-making Detroit group, The Spinners. The third main protagonist within MoPhilly International, is McKinley Jackson whose horn playing and arrangements can be previously found on many other former HDH acts' recordings like Laura Lee, Honey Cone and Freda Payne as well as his own group, The Politicians Featuring McKinley Jackson on Trombone. He also produced Lamont Dozier’s “Out Here On My Own” an ABC album. McKinley is currently working as the Musical Director for Motown's Legendary Otis Williams’s Temptations.

The opening track on the album is an up-to-date rework of The Major Harris Boogie Blues Band’s 1974 Atlantic records release, “Each Morning I Wake up,” a great up-tempo, feel good song to open an album with. The other up-tempo songs featured are the Steals Brothers/McKinley Jackson penned “Get Your Lovin’ While I Can,” a song previously recorded by another perennial favourite Beach Music group, The Embers, and later by Philly outfit, Earl Young’s Trammps. Followed by the Ken Knox penned “I’m Ready Willing And Able” previously recorded in 2014 by Ken Knox & Company, Soul Music Lovers should not only get prepared to put their dancing shoes on, but should also be sure to have a box kleenex close at hand.

The two remaining tracks on the album are there to remind us of what The Steals Brothers do at their best and that is to compose beautiful songs of love. Firstly the title track of the album “Words Left Unsaid,” a ballad that just oozes that classic Philly Sweet Soul Sound, a song that they first recorded on former Fat Larry’s Band lead singer, Darryl Grant. Followed by a totally new song, which Melvin “Lyric” Steals wrote in collaboration with Philadelphia's Teddy Prendergrass’s former keyboard player, Alfred aka “Alfie” Pollitt entitled, “No One Else.”

Now with The Chairmen Of The Board (Featuring Ken Knox) firmly ensconced as the flagship act at MoPhilly International (MPI) Records, we can only look forward to the future with great relish!

Press Release
James Carr is rightly regarded as one of soul music's greatest ever singers. He may not have enjoyed the level of success of some of his contemporaries, but his singles and albums for Memphis label Goldwax are considered to set the standard by which so much great southern soul is measured.
While James' discography is small by comparison with some of his peers, it makes a very strong case for quality over quantity. Only a handful of James' 1960s Goldwax recordings can be considered to be anything less than essential.
This compilation of James' most successful Goldwax recordings is issued to tie in with the 50th anniversary, in 2017, of James best known and most highly regarded single 'Dark End Of The Street'.  Naturally, it's here along with 19 other superb tracks that Kent hopes will please long-term fans who will enjoy having all the hits (and more!) in one place, as well as encouraging newer recruits to check out our other Kent compilations on James and to enjoy his remarkably consistent discography in its entirety.

Cooperettes & The Toppiks - Win All Your Love - Soul Junction

Press  Release: The Cooperettes/The Toppiks   “Win All Your Love”   SJ1009
Release Date: Monday October 23rd 2017

The Cooperettes were four sisters, Janette, Angela, Debbie and Tina Cooper from Germantown PA. Who began their singing career under the guidance of their mother Ethyl. Originally performing gospel as The Little Cooperettes they dropped the ‘Little’ when they switched to secular music. Still under the wing of the matriarchal Ethyl Cooper they signed to the management of respected Philly radio disc-jockey and entrepreneur Sonny Hopson (The Mighty Burner) securing a recording deal with Brunswick Records in 1966.

Their first release “Goodbye School/Goodbye School (Inst)” (BR-55296) made sufficient noise in and around Philadelphia for Brunswick Records to release a second 45 “Everything’s Wrong/Don’t Trust Him” (BR-55307), a cover version of the Chubby Checker song from the previous year which become a local hit for The Cooperettes.

The Cooperettes third and final Brunswick release was to be the Harthon Productions produced dance theme song “Shing-A-Ling/(Life Has) No Meanings Now” (BR-55329) a 1967 release that would later through its instantly recognizable drum roll introduction become an all time classic within the UK Northern Soul Scene. Sonny Hopson would later secure the girls a second recording deal with a major label with the 1968 Morris Bailey penned song “Trouble” gaining a release on the ABC label, released twice with different flipsides, “Peace Maker/Trouble” (45-1156) and “Spiral Road/Trouble” (45-1197).

The Cooperettes final release would be the1971 mid-tempo crossover outing “Win All Your Love” b/w the sister funk dancer “Satisfaction” released on the IDB label (I-D-B 1007).  The I and D being the initials of the former label owners christian names the late Irving Neiburg and Danny Odom. Danny Odom was also the former manager of the Philly hit group The Intrigues of “In A Moment” fame with the B in IDB being taken from the local label name Bullet which The Intrigues hit “In A Moment” was first released on.The youngest Cooper sister Tina would later marry Danny Odom.
The Toppiks were an all male vocal quartet featuring Theodore (Ted) Mills, Charles Henderson, Ronald Nelson and a fourth member only remembered by the name of Chuck. As the Toppiks the group recorded a solitary release the sweet sounding “Give It A Chance To Grow/Surrender” (Larsam 12739) with Larsam being derived from the two owners, Sam Reed and Philadelphia Deejay Larry Daley’s christian names. Both songs were written by R.E.Whitfield, Sam Reed and Ted Mills.  Sam Reed being the respected Jazz saxophonist and one time leader of Philadelphia’s revered Uptown Theatre’s house band. Sam also produced Patti LaBelle & The  Bluebells  1969 recording “Loving Rules” (Atlantic 45-2629)a song written by his former his wife and Bluebelle’s member Sarah Dash. The Toppiks would during 1972 audition for the Philly based WMOT Production Company alongside another group called The Shades Of Love. WMOT felt that The Shades Of Love (whom they contractually owned) lacked a strong lead singer, so they made the decision to release the other members of The Toppiks and signed Ted Mills only to WMOT as a singer/songwriter and then installed him as the new lead singer of the Shades Of Love. Ted alongside original Shades Of Love members brothers Vernon and Wendell Sawyer, Keith ‘Duke’ Beaton and Richard Pratt later underwent another name change to become the  hit group Blue Magic who through WMOT signed to Atco records and went on to score several billboard hits including their million seller “Sideshow” and a gold album “The Blue Magic”. Renowned for their slower ballads and choreographed stage shows the group went into decline due to the musical shift to disco in the late 1970’s although they continued to record for the Atco, Capitol, Mirage and Columbia labels. Ted ‘Wizard’ Mills in 2007 recorded the “3 Tenors Of Soul” album with original Stylistic’s lead singer Russell Thompkins Jr and William Hart of the Delfonics.

While both sides of the Toppiks Larsam 45 has always been appreciated by the sweet soul fraternity and is now to be joined by their previously unissued version of “Win All Your Love”, The Cooperettes version did receive a brief flirtation upon the northern scene during the 1980’s via DJ Pat Brady possibly as a cover up or not ? (neither he or I could remember). Although failing to make any impact then, The Cooperettes version did later find a natural home with crossover aficionados, as more copies of the record tricked in. Never an easy record to find it is now available to a wider audience.

Tramp's Feeling Nice series has positioned itself as a universally accepted essential cultural and historical document of some of the greatest unknown local vernacular American Black music of the sixties and seventies. The Feeling Nice series has been dedicated to filling in the blanks between the more well known cuts of so-called Deep Funk canon and drawing out the relationships and stories behind and between the tunes and the artists, and ultimately creating a dialogue that serves to enlighten and enliven a true anti-racist discussion of American Popular music specifically and of Global human music in general. With Feeling Nice Vol. 4, Tramp continues this important conversation, and having spent over 700 days unearthing a rousing selection across the board, offers it to you, now, as a double LP with full-color label scans, never before seen promo shots, and detailed biographical information - in some cases in the words of the artists themselves!
Believe me when I tell you, Feeling Nice 4 has got it all: Brilliant B-sides: (Donald Ray - "Strut Your Stuff"), Concealed covers: (Combined Forces - "Feelin' Alright"), Tittyshakers: (Big Bear Revue - "Big Bear"), Dance crazes: (Donnie Sanders - "Shing-A-Ling Baby, Mr. Clean & The Cleansers - "Karate"), Obscure cuts by well known R&B stars: (Fredrick Knight - "Steppin' Down"), Retro German rave-ups: (Take 5+2 - "Get Your Love"), Weirdo deep funk one-offs: (Moony Moon - "What About Mars"), Killers from the Caribbean: (Al Sinclair aka Lord Sausage - "No That Ain't Groovy"), Basement Jams: (TNT Powerhouse - "Basement Jam"), Most talked-about new discoveries: (Living Funk - "Silver Black Summer Day"), and more and more and more...

Chuck Jackson - Big New York Soul: Wand Records 1961-1966

Chuck Jackson - Big New York Soul - Wand Records 1961-1966
A new release from Kent records featuring Chuck Jackson Wand Records output. Including hits, alternates, favourites, previously unissued and new-to-CD Wand recordings.
Preview Listen
A preview of the release notes by @ady croasdellfollows,  the full version can be read via the weblink below
We released the best of Chuck Jackson’s Wand recordings on “Good Things” (CDKEND 935) in 1990 and subsequently put out his eight Wand albums as four CD two-fers. A reassessment of the tapes from our Wand trawl of the mid-80s, along with more recent discoveries, means we are now able to issue a final CD of previously unreleased tracks and rarities. Of the eight previously unheard songs, highlights are the perky opener ‘Things Just Ain’t Right’, a tremendous cover of the Curtis Mayfield-written ‘Need To Belong’, originally covered by Jerry Butler, and ‘Anymore’, a duet with Dionne Warwick.
Also included are ‘Little By Little’, a great uptempo dancer previously available on the Kent LP “A Powerful Soul” in 1987, ‘The Silencer’, a secret agent-styled film theme released only on a 3CD set in the 90s, and a demo of ‘In Between Tears’ previously exclusive to another Kent LP. There are two very good B-sides, ‘For All Time’ and ‘And That’s Saying A Lot’, which have never appeared before on CD. Some collectors may know ‘And That’s Saying A Lot’ from Christine Perfect’s cover on her first solo LP. ‘Big New York’, which appeared on our deleted “In The Naked City” CD, is also included.

Bobby Byrd - The Pre-Funk Singles 1963-68 - Out Now

Bobby Byrd - Help For My Brother - The Pre-Funk Singles 1963-68
A most recent release from the BGP label, this album concerns itself with the works of Bobby Byrd before his later groundbreaking funk singles bringing together for the first time the tracks he recorded for Federal, Smash and King
A preview of the cd release notes by Dean Rudland follow, the full notes can be read via the Ace records site (link below)
Without Bobby Byrd there would have been no James Brown, whose whole career stems from the moment he crashed into Byrd at a community baseball match in Toccoa, Georgia in 1953. Brown was an inmate of the Alto Reform School, a converted National Guard Armoury in the north of the state. Byrd’s family helped secure Brown’s release, and Byrd then let the youngster join his vocal group.
When Brown launched his own singing career, Byrd led his backing group the Famous Flames from that point on. For 20 years he was Brown’s right-hand man. Once Brown had established himself well enough to make records with members of his revue, Byrd was top of the list of those he wanted to record. In the 1970s Byrd cut groundbreaking funk such as ‘I Know You Got Soul’. Before that he spent the 60s recording a series of 45s, all produced by Brown. This is the first-ever compilation...

Northern Soul In Japan - The Independent Feature

The travel section of the Independent Website takes a look at the long running Northern soul scene in Japan

The northern soul movement shook up the UK music scene in the 1970s, and then went global. Duncan Forgan finds it still going strong in Japan
Johhe rules the dancefloor at the Jam Jam club in Kobe. He spins, shuffles and launches a series of high kicks: his baggy trousers billowing as he syncs his moves to the steady tempo of singer Luther Ingram’s 1967 non-hit If It’s All the Same to You Babe...
Go here for the article, plus a slack handful of photos, its worth the walk...
