Lowton - Fri 08 Nov - Mini-niter look back

Lowton A busy mini-niter (till 4am ) at Lowton last nite.
Looking forward to this one as had a smart line up, late finish and Lowton with its many rooms, places to chill and catch up is always a bit of a laugh Few words , some re-cycled quips and a disturbing lack of vinyl info follows. Lowton - things as always the same, Car park was full and as always no matter what that guy tells me when driving can never find how to get that bit around the back. In and at em. Somewhere along the line, have picked up part time job, ended up with 3 sets of flyers to dish out, ususal attempts to try and clear DMSC bulk lot, also CSC and Yorkshire Riders to give out, as distribution follows my travels (bar and record bit) can expect a audience of alcoholic vinyl deviants at your events. (a often used and repeated quip)
Rooms: Main hall was busy most of nite, thinned out from about 1am, but what saw all went down well and floor was busy Last weeks word of dj order was out of window as two of the guests Rob T and Andy R had a long drive back ahead so timings were changed, 3 rooms meant sounds wise recollection worse than normal!!Due to current mood had stuff like Jamica Underground rattling round head rather than 6ts covers titles. Andy Rix and Rob Thomas can be classed almost local jocks now as residents just down the road at the monkey, missed most of Rob Ts but heard went well, caught most of Andy Rixs and highlight being at long last hearing instrumental. Crying Time out and about, myself and others always class it as a DMSC sound, but strangely enough has never been played there, email for why if the mystery causes sleepless nites.
Dished out many of his big ones, fast approaching if not already classic status, Is Switch Around up there as a all-time classics yet or what???All floor filled, going down down well with the crowd. Missed a fair bit of Terry Ds due to other room wanderings, anyone fill in his latest plays?? Caught half of Gingers, for David Flynn made determined effort to id that "catchy" track (just to say to him you know that catcgy track youre on about that catchy track....errr its gone) but nought fitted the way he described it , though he pulled out some blinders, all details were inserted into brain, but wiped out by later modern influx, Ian Cunliffe pulled out a good quality one set, Mean Miss-treater, No Good guy, Lazy , being a couple of highlights, Carl Willingham finished nite off , with great mix of his top stuff, a couple of first hears to me and the odd revival or two.
Place was packed, as said thinned out later on ish, but main floor seemed stay busy and caught lot of all style top quality stuff Modern room - spent a fair bit of time in there, what is going on with this modern soul thing, one minute bit fed up of mid -tempo sound a like stuff, or some of that MTV flavoured mush. Then all of a sudden have a month or two of getting assaulted nah slaughtered by some of best stuff heard for a long long while, not sure if a case of just catching the right djsbut tonite ...wow! most impressive spots caught were by Pete Haigh and Mark Grice (mixing skills-ouch! flawless)- partial memories of tracks were by Jamacia Underground Blaze remix - just realised got this here at home via davey dixon - love existing being title great stuff Secret Sounds - Baby Come Home? a three initialed thing (yeah hopeless mike, I know) and a fair lot quality sounds that scream out the need to be id'd
R&B Room
As said last time place seems to be on a roll, and this time was definitely rolling. Djs caught featured likes of Roger Banks, Robbo, Mark Morgan, Mark Stewart, plus should imagine a lot more. With a well wide range of styles and sounds. Note to Lowton DJ debut of one of the regular yorkshire crowd Mark Stewart who have made this their homes, heard went down sizzingly i think was word. Also word of even some ska getting a airing as Barry Norman would say "and why not" Seems Pete Coulson has this room well sorted and place was kicking all the nite Carry on and this broom cupboard will need a extension
Overall - enjoyable nite, some top sounds , lot of laughs ,hours of fun!

Eddie and Ernie Lost Friends CD - Review

As said David Flynn posted a few reviews on Soul Talk, heres another of them! Seems its as he says! Yet another must buy from these crazy kent people Read on
Eddie & Ernie - Lost Friends (CDKEND214)
Simply brilliant...a must buy for sure...this is one of the best CDs for ages and deserves a place on everyones shelves.
Tracks from Artco, Eastern (why no "I cant do it"?), Columbia ("Doggone it" is brill NS!), Shazam, Chess, Buddah, Revue, Ramco etc...and some mouth watering unissued material...surprised on how wonderful their version of "Lay lady lay" is...honest...and all thanks to Dave Godin that they recorded it according to Daves typically high-quality sleeve note!
NS, Deep, Sweet, Harmonies the lot.
1. Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do - Campbell, Eddie C.
2. I Can't Stop The Pain - Johnson, Eddie
3. Lost Friends
4. I'm Gonna Always Love You
5. Man To Love A Woman
6. You Make My Life A Sunny Day - Phoenix Express
7. Doggone It
8. Outcast
9. We Try Harder
10. That's The Way It Is
11. Bullets Don't Have Eyes
12. In These Very Tender Moments - Johnson, Eddie
13. I'm A Young Man
14. Falling Tears (Indian Drums)
15. Standing At The Crossroads
16. Reaching Out
17. Woman Do What You Be Doing
18. Lay Lady Lay
19. Groove She Put Me In
20. You Turn Me On
21. Tell It Like It Is
22. Self Service - New Bloods (1)
23. It's A Weak Man That Cries
24. Watch Your Step - Little Worley & The Drops
amazon review :
Whew! I bought this recording without knowing much about Ernie and Eddie and without being familiar with the records. The fact that it was on the excellent Kent label meant that it wasn't too much of a risk.
Speculation turned to joy as great song after great song blew out the cobwebs in my hi-fi. I bought it thinking that there might be one or two gems, but it is packed with must-have soul songs. There is not one bad recording on this CD. I questioned the wisdom of putting on a cover version of "Tell it like it is", but it is a different song in the hands of these two experts.

Hideaway - View from Marc F

Marc F from Germany recently travelled across seven seas to the Hideaway, and going by what he wrote had a right old time.
Here's his view on the nite and what he dished out.
The Hideaway was great, the people involved even better, namingly Mike Warburton, Neil Henderson and of course Paul Welsby.
Also it was great to meet Lee Miller for the first time in person (cheers mate!).
Lots of understanding, open-minded and knowing soul fans! I hardly can think of one recent night that I enjoyed as much as this! Brilliant!
The "record talking" was brilliant, the "record trading" even better!
The venue is a sheer joy to look at and to dance in, the music from all the dj`s there is just that right mixture of R&B classics (and I mean R&B in the first meaning of the word), 6t`s rare soul gems, a bit of popcorn a bit of blue beat and that added extra little something called magic. All dj´s including Neil, Paul and Mike and as guest dj alongside myself Andre Minta played blinding sets. Paul for example played two blinding one-offs...
It was a brill night! Personally, I was overwhelmed by the warmth I was welcomed with by everyone and by the appreciation they gave the stuff I played. I nearly had to show and tell the details of every second 45 I played, which is good because it shows the interest of the people, but can put you into deep trouble when you have to deejay in-between and are using the microphone as a German native in England
I think they had like 100 + thru the doors, which is not bad bearing in mind all the other events all over the country and especially in the midlands.
If they let me (which they already said they would like to) I am sure to travel again to the rainy city in a not so far future. Here is what I played:
First set 11pm till 11.30pm
Don Revels (aka the Primettes) Return Of Stagger Lee UA / Al gardener (& the Primettes) I`ll Get Along Lupine / Louis (Blues Boy) Jones Come Back Home Saba / Screaming Joe Neal She`s My Baby Emerge

Second set 01.00am till 01.30am
Ernie Washington Lonesome Shack Chattahochee / Chyvonne Scott I`m Movin On Alto / Betty Lavette You`ll Never Change Atlantic / Lee Crandle Exp. Come On Baby c/up

News of latest hot releases from Kent

News of latest hot release from Kent!!! Shrine II (CDKEND 190) Amazing quality that means you can hear every bit of the over-produced (!) tracks...Id never noticed all the Ondioline (early synth) work deep in the layers of sound before...and I was particularly shocked to hear it was a keyboard and not strings within the instrumental break of RayPs "This time"....I really must get my hearing tested (no jokes about my musical taste!). Relieved to find both Bobby Reed unissued tracks, "Baby dont leave me" and "Caledonia brown" on there which are faaaaaaaaaaar too good just to have been left on the tapes........that DC Blossoms unissued, "This is your last chance" is also mighty fine.....great bass work in it...hats off to whoever did the transfers. The track that keeps getting a rewind though is the Counts "Peaches baby".......sounds so clear.....pure adrenaline-rush good ole NS and a fantastic allnighter sound. Important - Unreserved apoligy to Soul Source DMSC and Soul Bid

A person recently had problems on a northern list called advanced northern soul list. Due to the inability of the moderator to sort things and advise the member, the member then thought his account had been hacked. He then decided to post to 700+ soul fans an accusation of wrong doing by 2 sites which he assumed must be the cause through flawed logic. The Soul Talk list moderators managed to sort this members problems out, once they knew the symptoms by explaing and demostrating that his problem was an actual fault with the list providers, not a result of any hacking. The person then posted the 700+ soul fans a unreserved apoligy for his statement. against those sites As appears his accusations were a result of genuine mistake and the thought that he must pass on info fast, we have accepted this apoligy and as far as we are concerned is the end of this matter. The info about this fault was orignally posted on Topica Support List approx 4 months ago. and was immediately posted on the main soul lists. The moderator/s of the advanced (sic) northern soul list. appears unable to carry out simple tasks such as collecting news informing and advising members, these faults led this member to post untrue and unfounded allegations to over 700+ mail boxes. Along with the fact that this list is infamous through out the soul world for many wrong doings, abuse, lies and more. We highly recommend all soul fans to give it a wide bearth and look elsewhere.

Tonys Eleventh Annivesary

11th anniversary last nite and a most enjoyable time Sounds wise guests did good job Bob Hinsley, Carl Willingham, Kev Murphy,Ginger and Simon being the advertised guests , though sure Robbo was on,yeah was, Hit read more to read rest Regs included Mark Morgan and Little Scotty finished the nite.Sounds wise - was toss up between Carl W and Bob h for me for most enjoyable with other mains hitting the spot fairly regular Upstairs - Whats going on, had heard mention a fair few times recently round home way, with a few giving it cant wait, later while downstairs could hear this thumping beat coming thru roof. all way into main hall. Workmen in? Up I went, and bit of a double take place was jumping, 20/30 oddin there thumping 2k+ beat and a well good feel, hats off to Paul Baldwin, he has certainly got that room jumping, no sign of those sound the same 70s lp tracks, that were boring back then, never mind now , but a room full of up and at them thumping beats with soulfull icing. Fair bits of news, rumours and so on going round, some can say , some can hint, some will blow your socks off later on when goes firm, interesting dodgy one someone getting sued for using video clips of a certain artist ? Apparently artist was told not used, but seems was used, cue legal thing. (Of course it is as said a dodgy rumour but as interesting and maybe someone can confirm/deny). Some cracking news that unfortunatly cant say as planning in progress. Watch out Very big BUZZ on next weeks Lowton - and advance warning of order Terry Davis, Ginger, Ian C, Carl Willingham, Rob Thomas, Andy Rix finishing nite (of course all very non-offical and more than likely a few mistakes!) Know many DMSC from round here are looking forward to this one and going make most of extra chance scoring some extra monkey. With monkey on week after .......double monkey thatll keep things going for a while. Then with a choice of Halifax or Broughton next day for another dose of quality , its yet another fun packed weekend for those who like their northern as it should be Crowd wise fair sized crowd there and good atmosphere, 11th annivesary , pin annivesary badge given out, Very Odd bits - no details of exclusive plays, covers, one offs, either but just a look at the undercurrent stuff for a different viewpoint or as less brain taxing as cocetration is wondering, whats the Carl W sound with the "surf city" chorus, almost the same if not identical, surf city here we come, cue beachboys karoke time. Gale Adams 82 version of Baby I need your lovin, and floor filled and even get a round of applause, been popular round North Wales Coast last few months and think every time heard it always seems to get clapped. Hopefully as said before will put Clarence Carter finally to bed, (though someone just had to play it later didnt they as if to say no chance spade) can get both 45/12 cheap at moment, was passed on to check rest of the Clarence Carter "mind" lp as supposed to be well err..dirty -how many cups of tea. Pretty Girl Dressed In Brown seems to get played at every event go to recently, and value seems to be rising correspondingly, Some still playing that Terry Wogan spin and was informed Sarah Kennedy gives it a going over as well, surely passed its sell by date by now, radio 2 ? tune in, nah never , now that is admitting defeat and next it be the slippers, cup of coccoa thing while listening to the wireless. Interesting question when should a record get dropped.nowadays, though person maybe not to ask that question was Little Scotty who finished the nite with the majority of the usual stuff you usually hear from him, no suprises in last hour. Will just say £3 for 20 , play what he wants Overall a very enjoyable nite, had a laugh, good catch up, mix of sounds,Some top dog, some not my cup of tea, but think defintely a case of something for everyone. Room at the top was well kicking and know the Llandudno lot enjoyed it First weekend of the month out of the way and feel like dogsh*t roll on Lowton

Scenesville Playlists from 15 Oct 02

First things first - big thanks to everyone who came along and turned Friday into such a fantastic night - it was great to see everybody using the event to just have a great big Soulful party. Thanks also to the tireless bar staff who worked like demons to keep everbody topped up with drinks, particularly in the face of overwhelming demand during the happy hour - theyll have reinforcements next time, so life should be a tad easier for them - and also for all you thirsty punters, who should notice your drinks arriving that bit quicker! Thanks to the DJs who all turned in what I thought were superb sets - I tip my hat to them all, particularly our guest Kitch, who exceeded even the high expectations I had of him.
And finally thanks to those who took the time to offer such encouraging
comments after the event - its really reassuring to know that people haveenjoyed a night - it makes all the hard work worthwhile!

a real piece of class which there will always be room at Scenesville for.
Watch out for details soon of Scenesvilles Christmas party at the
Glasshouse club in Blackfriars and more Scenesville dates at the Camden
Centre next year, to be announced shortly. Meanwhile, thanks for making
Fridays anniversary a party to remember, and if you didnt make it along,
heres looking forward to seeing you soon!
All the best,
Nick

Weekend Round Up

New Tighter Format - Odd bits of news will go in Forum, while stuff like from weekend will be on main page.
SCENESVILLE -SECOND ANNIVERSARY Friday nite One of the big events of the weekend was Scenesvilles Second Annivesary down London town way. Reports from this are that it was "awesome", the music, crowd and atmosphere all being top notch. Certainly seems that this was the place to be this weekend. ANDY RIX, CHRIS DALE, DAWN BROWN and NICK BROWN with special guest KITCH 100% Real Deal 60s Rare Soul! they advertised it as, and sfrom what heard sounds like they delivered and then some. Hats off to the lot of them and congratulations on 2 ground breaking years. As one punter said "probably the best soul night Ive been to this year, absolutely brilliant."
NORTH MANCHESTER SOUL CLUB @ BURY Friday Niter 4th Annivesary DJs included Richard Searling, Kenny Burrell, Kev Murphy, Terry Davies, Ginger Taylor, Dave Booth and many more. Event here celebrated its 4th annivesary on Friday, and always seems a popular event Managed to grab a few views from some who attended and they varied quite a bit. Those who were after the style on offer gave it a very good. Of course these were just views passed on, if were there can use comments to get your views in.
GOLDBOURNE MINI-NITER - a mini-review
After a stop off at Joe Dunlops local in his outpost for a meet up at a back room soul nite, which was a good nite, meet up and a laugh, had round 100 odd in and guys dj-ing gave them what they wanted. After good time there got to Goldbourne. Just for bit of a challenge once in Goldbourne asked every drunk directions to add a bit of a edge to journey, gotta say town has a great set of Saturday nite drunks, with almost clear directions, and not one sending us wrong direction. Left before church being the key here
First time at this one, and name "the goldbourne catholic club" and the look outside of the place gives bit of false impression, but once in place bit different, first feel was a smart venue and well laid out. With record area, couple of bars, other room with decks casually playing varied selection mainly 6ts mix was what heard Main hall smart, good seating all around and all that, late bar, normal prices. Crowd wise, lot of the usual rogues, someone mentioned tourist once with regard to this place, but didnt spot any meself , crowd thinned out bit later on. All seemed enjoying it. DJ wise, some of North West names caught as didnt get there till 12 ish were Carl Willingham, Terry Davis, Kev Murphy and Dave Holt. Dishing out their current top sounds
All car load thoroughly enjoyed nite give it a thumbs up. Heard that plans for a monthly regular niter till 6am here on the third saturday were solid and after the nov date would adopt that format. So that may be of interest with those planning events. Know cause of all these possible clashes thinking of moving the 2003 DMSC series of rare soul mayhem nites to a Wednsday afternoon.!

CLEETHORPES WEEKENDER
Word on the 6ts 100 Club website is that this has been sold out already. Ouch!! The other major Weekender of 2003 at Presatyn is going very well, and along with the quality Conniseurs weekend at Llandudno it seems that the old saying "you can have your cake and eat it three" rings true. Said last year about these events "Soul for the Soul Fans run by Soul Fans" You Know The Real Score!!

MORE OLD SCHOOL TRICKS - when will they learn ? Seems a lot of people are upset with a certain promoter/dj with some rocket-style dirty tricks up in Yorkshire way

FINAL WORD Mate caught Johnathen Ross show on radio 2. Seems Dale Winton was guest, on show Ross mentioned Northern, apparently your man Dale Winton said hes well into it, says has loads of records and is a regular at that Rocket.....
and as cant think of anything to say after that! Seems a good place to finish. mike h

Review: Allniter4 Cd

1. The Phonetics - Just A Boys Dream 2. Jeanette Williams - Somethings Got A Hold On Me 3. Joey Delorenzo - Wake Up To The Sunshine Girl 4. Venicia Wilson - This Time Im Loving You 5. Vontastics - Ill Never Say Goodbye 6. The Brothers feat. George Young - Are You Ready For This 7. Clarence Carter - Messin With My Mind 8. Diane Pane - What Side Your Bread Is Buttered On 9. Helen Troy - I Think I Love You 10. Big Maybelle - Quittin Time 11. The 5th Dimension - Too Poor To Die 12. Fred Smith Orchestra - Baby Do The Philly Dog 13. Roy Handy - Baby Thats A Groove 14. The Blue Jays - (It Depends On The) Point Of View 15. Allan Sisters - Im In With The Downtown Crowd 16. Marva Jones - I Got Your Number (634 - 5789) 17. Pioneer Band - Jive Talk 18. Melvin Boyd - Exit Loneliness, Enter Love 19. Bud Harper - Let Me Love You 20. Brooks ODell - Watch Your

I picked this up last weekend and having now played it several times, I think its the weakest of the series so far. There are some corking tracks on it such as The Blue Jays, Allen Sisters. There are more oldies on there than usual and the "modern" stuff isnt all that. The Diane Pane track is terrible - tracks like this give the r and b genre a bad name.

Overall, a disappointment - 5 out of 10.

Plinston Hall Update October

Things are manic as always in the run up to the next soulful night at the Plinston Hall in Letchworth. So, rather then the normal individual e-mail to each and every one of you we have taken the step of mailing this cover all mail and hope that those of you who run your own sites and newsletters etc will be good enough to post those bits you feel are relevant.
Firstly due to the overwhelming success of our opening night (and a HUGE thank you to all of you who supported us) we have opened a second room upstairs for the November 1st event concentrating on Modern and crossover goodies. The Gallery Suite (known as The Ghetto - Its a family affair) overlooks the Kennedy Gardens and has a 16ft x 16ft dancefloor with a huge carpeted area for those who cant squeeze on! There is a separate bar and toilet facilities and DJs for this try out will be Taffy, TheBigO and Nathan. Open from 10pm-1.30am. Expect to hear such gems as Mr Day Soul on wax; Mind&Matter Under your spell, Gloria Gaynor Mend whats been broken; Millie Jackson Dont send nobody else and Lisa Stansfield 831 to name but a few.
We are hoping that come March all 3 rooms will be open on a regular basis, but more on that later. The opening of The Ghetto allows us to throw in an extra 100 soulies and so we should see an easing of the crush on the dancefloor of the first night. In addition we have had a long and productive chat with the Plinston management and have addressed many of the opening night teething problems, namely more bar staff, more beer, no drink on dancefloor enforced by Security etc etc. So hopefully we should see an improvement on all fronts, let us know if you have any concerns on the night. November 1st is the next event from 8pm-2am and features our very special guests, Dave Rimmer, Dudleys top bunny, with his brand of top notch
Northern goodies and the lovely Nick&Dawn Brown, faces behind the successful and scene leading Scenesville events in our nations capital. Expect tip top sounds to get you fighting for dancefloor space from them. They will of course be supported by the Usual Suspects!
WE STRONGLY STRONGLY ADVISE if you are travelling to purchase your advance ticket from the box office before the night as we think this will be another sell out, probably in less than the 2hrs it took our opening night to sell out!!!!! Dont be caught out, get it sorted!!!
On that note the Plinston done gone changed their box office number. The new number to call is: 01462-672003. Denis monotone voice will guide you through the buttons to press, please do try and stay awake! We have booked all of 2003 events and so can you make a note of these.
They are: Fri 7th March, 9th May, 4th July, 5th Sept (Anniversary Do with Live Act we hope) and 7th November. If you are a fellow promoter let us know if we clash and well do our best to get things sorted out so no-one is left holding the baby so to speak.
Future guests that we are hoping to confirm shortly inc. Butch, Andy Rix, Soul Sam, Ady C (for a West Hampstead memories night) and Guy Hennigan.
Oh, forgot, all future event tickets will be on sale on the night (i.e Jan 10th will be available on the 1st Nov night). See the Sinister Sisters, Jane & Jenny, on the night.
One last mention, Sat 16th November sees Randy Cozens celebrating 17yrs of Southgate (or Soulgate as we all know and love it) at Ye Olde Rising Sun, opposite the BR station in Southgate from 11am to midnight.
24+ DJs inc Taffy and TheBigO and the whole range of soulful grooves. Top man, top dayer and all for free!!!! Having missed only a couple over the years we can strongly recommend This thing of ours.
Many a tip top tune has been played there first and then gone onto bigger and better things across the country, such as Bobby Kline, Teddy Pendergrass, Anette Snell, Millie Jackson the list is endless.
Check out the scenes best kept secret and the greatest little soul alldayer - EVER! (Trademark)
Thats all for now then brothers&sisters.
Look forward to seeing many of you on the night. Til then, remember...Time is passing us all by, so be young, be foolish but above all else.......
BE HAPPY! North Herts 6Ts Mafia

Sad News Don Varner RIP

Sad news that Don Varner past away this week, am sure right in saying that all thoughts from all soul fans go out to his family and friends RIP
Don Wilson Varner (25 June 1943 – 7 October 2002[1]) was an American soul singer. Varner was a baritone who sang both uptempo soul in the northern soul style as well as ballads.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Varner grew up in the same neighborhood as Eddie Kendricks.[2] Varner moved to Chicago after high school to pursue his music career but returned to Alabama after six years to record in Muscle Shoals.[2] at Rick Hall's FAME Studios. He wrote songs including "I Keep Holdin' On" for Sam & Dave (with William Crump). Varner also worked with Quin Ivy in Sheffield, Alabama[2] and released several songs including "Masquerade", "Down in Texas", and "Tear Stained Face" on the South Camp and Quinvy labels.
Varner did not release many recordings but performed numerous live shows in the South with other major soul performers.[2] He moved to California in the 1980s and toured as the lead singer of the Johnny Otis Show.[2] He toured numerous European music festivals in 1985. In his later, career, he began to record gospel music. He died in Moreno Valley, California in 2002 of a heart attack at the age of 59. An album of his music from 1968–1974 entitled Finally Go Over! was released posthumously.

DMSC 28 Sep - Three monkeys....

DMSC Soul nite was on last nite at the Springfield Hotel A55 Third one in the series and the final sort of see how things are going one.

Well how did combination of a line up featuring likes of KEITH MONEY, ION and DAVE THORLEY, a well smart venue and monkey attitude go?
Well need to hit read more for my own view and will just say watch out soon for next years dates, more top quality line ups and some near future news

Third Monkey happened Nite looking back seems to have been a succesfull one. All feedback got on nite and so far was that all enjoyed it . Crowd: A fairly mixed crowd, a good "here to enjoy" feel was all over place Fair few regulars hardcore now and hats off to the long distance ones such as St Ives and also the Irish contigent who flew in and paid the door in Euros! Fair few new faces, some regonisable. Found out hotel has been advertising nite in its own leaflets and reckon had a couple coming in cause of that. Full marks to the girls who turned up in a white stretch limo for the nite though not as impressive as my 24 hour hire nissan micra but was very close Djs Main regs Andy R and Rob T were on sidelines due to a double booking so a few last minute signings and reckon we had a well a strong line up Main room Keith Money, Ion, Dave Thorley being the main striking force and they went for goal big style. Some great sets, and some great sounds. First guest up was Chico doing the "local" spot, went for a 70s feel as doing 60s later and did good things.

Andy Killick another local (Chester) dj/collector up next, weve been warning people off about him as knew what he was going to dish out and he certainly deserved that warning with some top dog sounds. Ion making a rare appearance up here next and carried on from last time caught him with quality set Dave Thorley again a name not often seen round these parts, stepped up and lashed out with some great sounds Scotlands Keith Money was last of the all-star guest line up, and ouch, so good it hurt, know that now has a well strong dmsc contigent to his fanclub. Great stuff. Last half hour was the "monkey till you drop" finish with as normal the "local" boy taking it on. Chico dug deep and come up with a half hour feel good mix of classics, quality and good to hear agains. No excuses Play lists hopefully will follow soonest,

Second room Bit of confusion about this sometimes, as heard it called in past the "modern" ? room, the "R&B" room amongst other things!! Loose 6ts "across the other side of street format", is what we are after delivering and we try and get a varied mix of djs, who offer a varied mix of 6ts soul and reckon certainly had that this time. Allready this room seems to have got a bit of rep after the last one, with even a "undercover" reporter present. Didnt go as planned really due to one dj late and one dj doing what asked not to- what can you do? Martin Thomson made long journey up from London and gave us some quality These Old Shoes Style for the last hour set, some great stuff, and gotta say big thanks to Martin for making the journey Pete Coulson - was lynch pin for room, did early bit, then finished the nite off with a top selection of uptempo R&B which had place jumping Brian Rae - Brian dug deep for some classy little heard vinyl spins to take us on a voyage of discovery Mark Morgan - Mark pushed out a popular set that went down well on floor

odds digital cameras were out and about thanks to Anne, so some visual shocks should be up soon biggest suprise of nite was when Nick Brown just turned up outta blue -double take time online - always good to meet online people, hat off to Scotty and wife from Carlisle, plus all usual suspects news - lea manor is coming back soon venue hotel seems have well busy turnover of staff, but gotta say not many if any of previous hiccups showed up, few minor tweaks with sound, normal barstaff confusion with hour long two for one drink promotion but everything else seemed to work good.

Was a fair few record sales doing the rounds, with some good buys to be had future - next one is a one-roomer with main guest being Andy Dyson and regs Rob Thomas with Carl Willingham standing in for Andy Rix whos on holiday. Plus Mark Speakman and Soul talks very own Steve T Plan is to cram everyone in, look door and see what state all are in after 5 and a half hours of rare soul mayhem. Nov 16 being the day. own view - ok as one of the team, my view is coming from a different angle that the "punter",all feedback got was all seemed to have well enjoyable time, after 3 events now have a great bunch of regs and supporters, and know that theres a fair few "revitalised" (word some used to explain it) people hungry for even more fresh sounds. So what seen and heard feedback all good. Thanks - gotta say many thanks to all the guest djs, a fair few did some well long journeys to show up, and am sure their efforts are appreciated by all as their sounds were. Know they enjoyed themselves and had a great time, which is what its all about. Thanks as always to those who helped with flyers, spreading the word, supporting us and and more. Thanks to main sound crew Lawrence and arabians And Pete Coulson for 2nd room gear plus his roadies ....his family Thanks to DMSC door crew team Sue, Julie and Dave And of course thanks to all DMSC members, the ones who put the monkey in it DMSC ps we thrive on feed back and ears always open , so lets us know any thoughts, views, criticisms etc etc on nite always scrounging stuff for site if wanna do a review , shoot away either email dmsc@soul-source.net website - www.soul-source.co.uk should be updated soonest, if want to see video clips - give Dick John a kick when see him next.

Standing In The Shadows Of Motown

Lp out now, the film due out in US on Nov 15.
A fair few websites, clips, trailers, audio etc etc all up and out there.
save you hunting around here's some decent links and a few words from intro of film
The official website
http://www.standingintheshadowsofmotown.com/
Film intro:
In 1959, Berry Gordy gathered the best musicians from Detroit's thriving jazz and blues scene to begin cutting songs for his new record company. Over a fourteen year period, they were the heartbeat on "My Girl," "Bernadette," I Was Made to Love Her," and every other hit from Motown's Detroit era.
By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number one's hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers.
Forty-one years after ................

Track Listing: Starring The Funk Brothers on all tracks
1 -(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave - Joan Osborne
2 -You've Really Got A Hold On Me - Meshell Ndegeocello
3 -Do You Love Me - Bootsy Collins
4 -Bernadette (instrumental) - The Funk Brothers *
5 -Reach Out I'll Be There - Gerald Levert
6 -Ain't Too Proud To Beg - Ben Harper
7 -Shotgun - Gerald Levert featuring Tom Scott
8 -What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted - Joan Osborne
9 -I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Ben Harper
10 -You Keep Me Hanging On (instrumental) - The Funk Brothers *
11 -Cool Jerk - Bootsy Collins
12 -Cloud Nine - Meshell Ndegeocello
13 -What's Going On - Chaka Kahn
14 -Band Introduction / Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Chaka Kahn&Montell Jordan
15 -The Flick - Earl Van Dyke *they played their first note an a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story in STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN.
With the tumultuous sixties as a backdrop, Motowns unsung heroes take the viewer on a compelling journey in time as they trace the evolution of The Motown Sound" from its origins in Detroit to its demise in Los Angeles during the seventies. Through the eyes of the riveting characters who ruled Hitsvilles studio by day and the club scene of Detroit by night, we enter a world of unparalleled soul and emotion as the Funk Brothers revisit the sites of their musical roots, triumphs, and eventual heartbreak.
For more than four decades, from the dance floors of the world, to the Detroit riots of 1967, to the war in Vietnam, the music the Funk Brothers created has played a major role in the cultural fabric of all of our lives. STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN finally puts some faces on that music and introduces these heroic musical figures to the world.
"There are suckers out there for the films brand of shrink-wrapped nostalgia. Im not one of them."
-- Bill Chambers, FILM FREAK CENTRAL
"When it stays on track, its pretty good fun"

Keele Back with a good one - T

Busy weekend after Runcorn and Wilton, it was off to Broughton and then Keele Niter last nite Got there about 1.30 Been told that earlier on wasnt much dancefloor action But from 2am caught 3 great sets by Irish Greg, Butch and Roger Banks Dancefloor packed, place had a good buzz Three hours worth of then oldies spot by Rob Jones which wasnt my cup of tea Keith Minshull finished nite with a good set. Doors open at 10 so missed 4 hours of the niter inc sets by Mick Smith, Dave Welding, though got to say the 3 hours 2-5 were great stuff.

Overall ...from what I saw Well what an improvement, when last year the event closed down, it was said that the event had run its course. And to tell the truth my experience there agreed with this. This one though was a completely different affair. Crowd was from all over UK Down South, London, Cambs, Yorkshire etc etc and of course many from North West and North Wales.

A lot of familar faces and a lot of catching up Place had a good buzz, Greg, Butch and Roger did great things and the crowd responded. Look forward to seeing future dates, regulars and line ups. Going by those 3 hours if go for same am sure this new version will be a winner. And will be another recent addition to the decent soul events list.

Broughton was a good one, main guest was Arthur Fenn with Mark Speakman doing the North Wales slot. The normal guest timings had changed so only caught a bit of Arthur Fenns spot. regulars Soul Sam and Brian Ellis pushed out what they are good at, a good quality mix of all era soul Version of Family affair by Misia ?? was a stand out.

Record Thief Alert

Posted on soul talk by a "concerned dealer" and passed on with permission as may be of interest to some WARNING!!! Whilst selling records at Keele last night I turned to talk to a mate and someone took 3 records out of my box and walked away with them. Fortunately I saw him out of the corner of my eye and challenged him, took all the records from him and recovered my STOLEN records, by the time I`d found the promoters the guy was nowhere to be seen. The strange thing was that he`d actually bought some records from me earlier although the value of the records he bought was £10, the ones he`d stolen £100! A brief description of the guy; mid 40s, yellow polo shirt covered in old patches and a beige Nike cap, keep a look out for him around the venues.

Travels and weekend Going Ons 21 Sep

Bit of travelling last nite,
hit read more for quick look back at Pavillions - Runcorn
And a long journey and a short visit of Wilton All Niter

Plus some odd bits of other news, gossip, etc mixed in

After a week of car and washing machine trouble, weekend was well anticipated.
As always North Wales confusion crept in as thought was going to south Manchester event, but turned out was off to Pavilions at Runcorn, which for some reason thought had already been on this month.
Steve T (Holyhead) was main guest and had a space so off we went with a shady north Wales crew Dick John, (if anyone wants to catch dmsc soul nite video online, when see him tell him "sort that video"), Chris and Dave F being rest of bunch.

Pavilions was still where it was last time, and still as smart inside. Venue well plush, and good layout and feel. A enjoyable venue. Those who dont know event its run by Bernie OBrien and Steve Fletcher, helping out was someone who had a fair bit of chinwag but didnt catch name, know youre online mate so apologies. Way have had event described to me in past, is this is a selfish thing for promoters, they do run another event where emphasis is on popular play what crowd want, which is mainly an oldies event. But this one is the balancer, the fun thing, a "let the djs do their own thing" and no policy. Dont like that "across the board" term as been misused a lot. Feel of nite to me was a classy mix of all era soul.

Bernie on decks at first then followed by Cogs (not that sure on name, may be wrong and guy on door was cogs??)
Heard some nice stuff , crowd was a bit down on last time was there, though werent that many early on, gotta say the early dancers were well impressive, rare nowadays to say that but well smart and stylish. Was a strong 70s+ feel overall, highlights included likes of the great jerry butler - dont step on my dreams and more similar style grooves, had mentally noted a lot more but gone west at moment. With the odd classic thrown in , Soul Self Satisfaction was dedicated to the late Martin Ellis.
Steve T was on next at 11 as the main guest, asked my advice earlier as I have guested here before, I told him the crowd was all into early R&B the earlier and the more down tempo the better. Of course he wisely ignored my advice and continued the set trend with a smart mix of 60s current plays, few classics and 70s+. Not a representive mix but some examples being - Pretty Little Girl Next Door - Bobby Day , Holland Dozier - New Breed Kinda Woman, Gayle Adams- Baby I need your loving. sure Steve will add when recover as didnt catch all.
Bernie finished of nite with bit more of a good mix of all era soul
Odds
Alan B wouldnt give out details of that other version of Vooddo Working apart from a few clues as it was actual legal issue not dub. Did say other stuff but gone west. Mentioned next weeks main guest at Viaduct is Ginger.
Overall, numbers down, but still an enjoyable nite, some great sounds on the 70-2k trip, some could have done with out, but "something for everyone and all that
Orig plan was just the one event but come 1am most of us had a strong desire to crack on, though Steve t had work in morning, such was our thirst we sweet talked steve t into just making a flying visit to wilton, suppose steve is more than likely cursing us right now at work. Yeah and we deserve it

Wilton

Enough is enough, someone tell me what is it about yorkshire, every time in last couple of months been there, have had a right bundle of laughs. This time no different, as was planned just to nip across for a few hours time was tight. So as wanted to get most was in a rush, first thing we found out that exit number we were given was wrong!! Which made the mobile phone directions we were trying to follow a bit hard. Cut the crap - think one hour 50 odd miles, another motorway exit, 3 security guards, a 24 hour garage, and 30 mins of Pete Coulson mobile phone credit, later we found the place
If someone wants to tell why does it seem that all events in yshire seem to be located in the middle of industrial estates feel free
Off topic: just worked out why Yorkshire Rider crew had probs finding DMSC, wasnt my tip top directions, it was fact that there was no industrial estate within 10 miles of it." That might be it " said our young soul fan "...nay lad dont be daft. Has thou seen all that green stuff around here, and wheres all security gates and wire fences, nay lad thou is wrong, keep thy foot down, now weres my snap box" - advance apoligies

By time got there, worked out what time had to leave as Steve T was at work in morning, mmmm we had one hour
A quick haggle on price with door staff , in, catch up with a fair few not often seen, not sure who was on when in but played some nice stuff, was told numbers were down, 2 cups of tea, Chris Sheppard then was on and Let It Be Real- George Hobson hit the spot, (seen this had spins at wigan 78, how did it go) Steve T pointing at his watch, a quick attempt to flyer every one in 2 mins, and that was it, a 2-3 hour journey ahead, and to make matters worse found out that a bloody security guard had given us long way directions, and when driving around were just 50m away from venue
Back home at 7

Final thing on wilton is was it worth it?
My own view yep, even though spent more time industrial estate touring than in actual event (check out the argos distribution depot for a superb example of the latest version of the highly rated secur-r-us gate barriers)
Event been trying to get to for a fair while but usually either clashes, or plans failing means no go. As said was told numbers were down, and dance floor reaction was a bit on/off , but even short time event there , place had that "feel" you associate with a good quality event . And as recently some events happenings have left me wondering "am I on different planet" well that hour cleared it all up .
Definitely be going again, a hour not really long enough for fair view suppose, but what saw, felt and all the rest despite numbers down, will undoubtely result in yet more battles with those bloody Yorkshire industrial estates.

Plinston Hall Update

Hi all. Back again with all the latest news regarding North Herts biggest Rare Soul event - the Plinston Hall. Firstly the next night is Friday 1st November with guests Nick&Dawn Brown and Dave Rimmer joining the usual line-up of Hammie, Fingers, Taffy and TheBigO&Ab. Tickets are a MUST for those who intend travelling and can be reserved on the door or paid for by credit card from the box office on (01462) 480282. £5 gets you in to a guarenteed packed fun filled night. Please note: Our events are not, at present, members only so you CAN turn up on the night and pay at the door. We do not advise this if you are travelling to the event as the last one sold out in under 2hrs. All the opening night problems (too few bar staff, overcrowding, bar drunk dry etc etc) have now been sorted and we have opened the upstairs Modern/Crossover room for this night (6 months ahead of schedule) to cope with the demand. Top Modern DJs will be booked for the forthcoming events and please note NO SOULFUL GARAGE is envisaged!! We are talking with the management about the possability of holding allnighters at the venue and so far talks are encouraging. However, we want to build a strong database of members asap as this will be members only events. Drop us a line at nh6tsmafia@aol.com for further information. Thats it for now. January sees the lovely Ginger Taylor gracing the decks and we are hoping to secure the services of Soul Sam in the Modern room (TBC). Butch will also be making his debut at the club sometime in the new year and the R&B/R&S room will be opening in March 2003 so watch this space and find out why we say....Herts - Full of soul! The Power Rangers Of Northern Soul!

If haven't checked it out yet, can watch the famous northern soul patrol on web. Funniest thing on tv since that thing on breakfast tv that involved a pie in a bread roll.....

Both clips are up on BBC choice site - also linked in the new video player section (under testing but seems solid)
Heres what Johnny V says on site about them

"And Soul Patrol, they're back arent they? Yes! I just love Northern Soul. I always have done. The first time I saw it I knew I was observing a phenomenon. It was a kind of working-class dance movement, a forerunner to Rave. It was about you, your state of mind and a driving beat. It was a movement that passed by everyone in the South because the London music crowd never ventured North and there were no magazines then like The Face, or the internet to bring everyone in touch. This is another reason I see value in it. Where did you get the guys from? I can't reveal the source of them but we will be bringing out action figures. They're going to be the new Power Rangers, solving crime to the power of the beat. "

The Truth is out there....

Well seems were rumbled, some have commented on team monkeys frequent trips to caribbean and other suspicious things. Investigative reporter Nick Brown of Scenesville fame recently told the world via Soul Talk, the truth behind the DMSC nites and the legendary "Two drinks for one promotion"!! Thanks to him our grant from McGill University, Montreal, has now been suspended! And there is no longer a need to enter blood groups on memberships application forms. just hit that read more... to read more

Found this in the latest issue of Fortean Times and couldnt resist sharing it with you all. The article is a paraphrase of a report which appeared in the Sunday Telegraph of May 3, 2002, and appears in a feature collecting together items on this theme. Club promoters in the North Wales borderlands might particularly enjoy it! ******** A study that involved giving alcohol to 1000 green vervet monkeys has shown that small primates behave very much like humans. The vast majority drank moderately and only in the company of other monkeys (but never before lunch) and preferred their drink to be diluted with fruit juice. Around 15% drank regularly and heavily, preferring their hooch neat or with a dash of water. The same proportion drank a little or were teetotal. Five per cent were "seriously abusive binge drinkers". They get drunk, pick fights, and consume as much as they can before passing out. As with humans, most heavy drinkers are young males, but monkeys of both sexes and all ages like a drink. The research took place on the Caribbean island of St Kitts, where monkeys have developed a taste for alcohol in the form of fermenting sugar cane, and now frequent the islands bars to gulp back abandoned cocktails. The study involved keeping the animals in cages and offering them a choice between soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and diluted alcohol. "A cage full of drunken monkeys is like a cocktail party," said Professor Frank Ervin of McGill University, Montreal, who led the study. "You have one who gets aggressive, one who gets sexy, one who thinks everythings funny and one who gets really grumpy. The binge drinkers gulp down the alcohol and pass out on the floor. The next day they do it all over again." ***************
