George Duke, a Marin-bred, Grammy-winning jazz keyboardist and producer whose sound infused acoustic jazz, electronic jazz, funk, R&B and soul in a 40-year-plus career, has died. He was 67.

 

A representative for Duke said the performer died Monday night in Los Angeles. Duke was being treated for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

    I once played out- I want you for myself - years ago at a Northern night Did that get some looks and comments.

    Very sad news. 'Dukey's' music was a big influence on shaping a lot of people's tastes from the early 70s and he will be missed. 

     

    George was one of the most innovative and influential Jazz keyboard players and his music has delighted us for 40 years. He was also a great producer having produced many artists including Rachelle Ferrell.

     

    George leaves a music legacy covering 40 albums as a leader for us to enjoy for eternity. His classics from late 70’s to early 80’s like ‘Brazilian Love Affair’, ‘Follow the Rainbow’ and ‘Master of the Game’ we’re major albums in the Jazz Funk era, and his earlier albums on MPS are now highly sought after.  He also played on numerous other sessions some using pseudonyms such as Dawilli Gonga (on Alphonse Mouzon’s — Man Incognito album amongst others).

     

    George had just released the Dreamweaver album, his best for at least a decade, which he dedicated to his wife of 40 years Corine who died almost exactly a year ago. It features a duet with Teena Marie ‘Ball and Chain’ one of her last recordings.

     

    Seeing George Duke Live was an unforgettable experience, I can still remember my heart pounding for 30 minutes after his gig with Stanley Clarke at Hammersmith Apollo in the early 80’s. Having met him a few times I can vouch that he was a larger than life character, who will be sadly missed.

     a complete genius, lauded for his talent, a great exponent of jazz in all it's formats...a travesty of justice to die at such a young age...67?, not even time to spit in the wind. i think for most jazz funk fans, brazilian love affair is a trademark by which others are judged, is easily in my top ten of that genre, yet that alone dosn't scratch the surface of what george had achieved in his brief lifetime. his legacy is a university of knowledge for those who want to follow his lead. may i also suggest a wonderful modern soul classic he cut for epic in 1980 "i want you for myself", at the time, right up richard's street.
