Quite a contrast with Friday night when there were between 5 and 7 events in the West Midlands, tonight there were . . . . zero! So had to look a little further afield.

This is a newish event in this venue and what a venue! I am an architecture buff and this is almost the perfect building - I had to look up the history of it and this is what it says:- "A new chapel, built of brick in a Grecian style to a design by Thomas Simpson of Nottingham, was opened on the same site in 1860". The entrance has a beautiful stone surround and inside they've retained the windows, screen, balcony, pulpit, floor, ceiling etc. so a stunning setting for any kind of do.

Anyway with surroundings like that what could go wrong? Well, there was a technical problem early in the evening when something electrical blew resulting in about 20 minutes of downtime but luckily this was at the start of the night so things hadn't really got going by then. Once it was sorted there was a comprehensive mix of music - 'across the board' can mean many things to many people, tonight it meant a broad range; at the extremes were Luther Vandross, some rarer R&B and even a bit of Reggae  but the majority of the night was good solid Northern with a heavy interlude of Modern (not all to my taste but I'd rather some variety than the same old thing all the time, and as a plus there was no "I wanna Give You Tomorrow"😀 ) probably the true definition of across the board? Seemed to keep a disparate, all ages, crowd happy so they are obviously doing something right. A couple of scene luminaries present as well.

Not many drawbacks, dancefloor is not huge but they limited numbers anyway, floorboards are not the smoothest but they're 159 years old!! so I can live with that, electrical fault was annoying but quickly sorted and soon forgotten (until I started going on about it here lol). There are only 4 of these a year so well worth a journey especially if, as tonight, it doesn't clash with anything else.

Did a couple of sketches, the first during the downtime so I got a bit carried away drawing the windows and only stuck the dancers in afterwards. The one of the DJ looks like a Vicar (but he was in the old pulpit so it's fitting).

I rarely give 5 stars - I've noticed most reviews are by the promoters of the events who inevitably give 5 stars to everything. I am trying to be objective.
