Great to see Bob Hinsley rolling back the years, double decking with Robbo, some tremendous stuff played. I enjoyed my impromptu set preceding them and managed to play Mike Roche his request , Cookie Scott "mislead" maybe set to have it's day in the sun?! Simon"The Fixer" Ingham played the usual high quality hour, we've come to expect Bo Fowler "upper hand" Keith + Billie "tastes sour, don't it" Hayes Cotton and finishing with the Mighty Chuck Cockerham and Little Rubin!! We caught the first half of Kev Murphy's last hour set Little Joe Roman and Frankie Beverley "because of my heart" a great way to kick start the set!! Mickyfinn March 2Mar 2 (edited) 5 of 5 members say helpful 5 / 5 members Culcheth at its best, where the energy of the crowd merges with incredible music to produce a magical night over two rooms. The night started in the main room with the Host Baz M giving us the magical Dream Merchants, Clarence Hill and The Four Voices. Also including Eddie Holeman ‘Your Beautiful’, the dominant Cabasa (rattle snake) sound that is not for everyone. Mick Howard played the enigmatic Paramount Four ‘You Don’t Know’, Celiste Hardy and the incredible Cookie Scott ‘Mislead’ (current favourite). Robbo double decked with Bob Hinsley, with the classic sounds of Jock Mitchell and Herb Ward. A Stafford anthem Righteous Brothers ‘It’s Up to You’. And the heartfelt Jewel Atkins ‘My First Lonely Night’ Simon Ingham opened his box of magic, his offering included Ernestine Eady, Tommy Ridgely, Gene Toones and the poignant sound of Johhny Gilliam ‘Room Full of Tears’. Kev Murphy took the last spot, a set that kept the dancefloor busy right to the end. Tunes included the timeless Mighty Lover Band and the sophisticated sound of the Caressors. The Modern room was equally brilliant. Bob Wildman played the peerless Bobby Womack ‘Give it Up’. GQ’s classic ‘Make my Dreams a Reality’. And the big production sound with fabulous strings, Al Hudson ‘Spread Love’. The man himself Soul Sam followed, playing some classic tracks that had the room buzzing and the dancefloor bouncing. Kicking off with Charles Johnson, followed by a Sam classic, Mark IV ‘If You Can Tell Me Something’, True Image and Innersection. Baz M took the last hour, this time with his Modern hat on. Those Cinderellas who left early missed a brilliant set. The recently departed Gwen McRae ‘Keep the Fire Burning’, Kenni Burke, The Jackson Sisters and the funky sound of Lamont Dozier ‘Breaking Out All Over’. A great evening of incredible music. The night ended in the main room to the epic dance track: Lenny Curtis ‘Nothing Can Help You Now’. Edited March 2Mar 2 by Mickyfinn
Eddiefoster March 2Mar 2 (edited) 4 of 4 members say helpful 4 / 4 members I for one had a fabulous night at Culcheth - we arrived slightly later than planned due to the ever unreliable mancunian way after collecting Robbo (who by the way was on top form already by then) - mental note to self, just detour back to the M60 next time!!! Mick Howard had already taken charge of the wheels of steel delivering one of his usual solid sets (Mick where's the list?) a great mix with one eye on the square wooden thing of course. Robbo - joined by his long time partner in crime Bob Hinsley (always wonderful to see Bob) were up next and as expected set the bar high, no pressure Simon... The Culcheth crowd is never the same month on month so always a nice challenge to try and find the sweet spot, of course that's a moving target but I enjoyed trying - my set listed below to give a feel of the night, maybe not all in the correct order (I've slept since) .... Kev Murph as we've now mentioned in many a review, is really enjoying the final hour and all I can say is that right at the end of the night the floor was still buzzing when he dropped the needle on The Magnetics - Count The Days (whoosh as Mick would say ) I should add - I popped my head into the modern room briefly on a few occasions to observe a happy looking crowd and a lively floor. Great Job BazM - keep up the good work 1. Exotics - Let's Get Together 2. Keith & Billie - Tastes Sour Don't It 3. The Temptations - You've Got To Earn It 4. Troy Dodds - Try My Love 5. Charles Sheffield - It's Your Voodoo Working 6. Solomon Burke - Save It 7. Hayes Cotton - Black Wings Have My Angel 8. Gene Toones - What More Do You Want 9. Paris - Sleepless Nights 10. Vivian Carol - Oh Yeh, Yeah, Yeah 11. Lee Rogers - Go Go Girl 12. The Venturas - Heart Of Love 13. Timmie Williams - Competition 14. Ernestine Eady - Let's Talk It Over 15. Traditions - Twinkle Little Star 16. Leo Price & Band - Hey Now Baby 17. Bo Fowler - The Upper Hand 18. Johnny Praye - Can't Get Too Much Love 19. The Celebrities - I Choose You Baby 20. Tommy Ridgely - My Love Gets Stronger 21. Cody Black - It's Our Time To Fall In Love 22. Little Dooley - If Ever I Needed You 23. Chuck Cockerham - Have I Got A Right 24. Little Reuben - In The Name Of Loneliness 25. Johnny Gilliam - Room Full Of Tears Edited March 2Mar 2 by Eddiefoster
Bazm March 3Mar 3 3 of 3 members say helpful 3 / 3 members First of all, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who came to CULCHETH on Saturday, it really was great to see sooo many happy smiling faces and hear really positive comments about the music policy at CULCHETH in both the main room and the Modern Room. I’m going to quote Mike Roche’s comment from his review, as IMHO it encapsulates the CULCHETH vibe and ethos, Mike said about Saturday; “Culcheth at its best, where the energy of the crowd merges with incredible music to produce a magical night over two rooms.” So thanks to the DJ team and thanks to everyone who made the effort and chose CULCHETH as their destination venue this weekend. Let’s Keep on Doin’ and Keep On Keeping On! https://www.facebook.com/100003177638799/videos/3520622888233932/
