About The Event

The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2025 we're looking once again to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests.

Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon.

Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL.

In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor.

We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

Really enjoyable night at Ashton Ukrainian Club. We were a little low on numbers, but that didn't detract from the event, some amazing and varied sets from all the DJs last night!!

Many thanks to our regular supporters, it really is appreciated and a first for me personally I spotted a paper flyer for our December event WOW !! I think in all the time we've been running the promotion has always been online, so thanks for going the extra mile Gibby Gibby!!

Quality opening salvo from Phil Dunn always a varied selection, great to hear Mary Love Comer "come out of the sandbox"

Really nice set from our Debutant DJ Karl Bodey 6 feet under "hot foxy woman" sounded a bit good!!

I played the link spot before our two guest DJs took to the stage, hope you enjoyed, tried to mix it up. I'll post a playlist later on.

Gamekeeper Jones played a nice mix of early 60s dancers Ed Bruce on Wand, coupled with a few funk edged dancers with Johnny Griffiths version of "Do it" grabbing the attention of the dancers followed by The Tangeers and the barnstorming "what's the use of me trying" Al McCarthur "his true love" a great set ender, sealed the deal!!

Cometh The Hour, Cometh the man Tsop Manchester Baz Maleady opened and really grabbed the attention with a stone classic Four Tops, "can't seem to get you out of my mind" The usual high quality selections followed with a few evergreens to capture the mood Kenny Gamble "the jokes on you" Four Tracks and The Awesome TSU Toronados version of "1000 wonders" great set sir!!

Chris Churm finished the night off in style El Corals , Jackey Beavers "I need my baby" Ralph Graham "she just sits there"

Another quality line up awaits in November, please see attached flyer and keep your eye on here, instagram and Soul-Source for updates as we near the date!!

Missed the last event due to a hooly of a storm that may have necessitated a lifeboat getting across Rishworth..but not this time thankfully!, always advisable to be early doors, as much for the tuneage as the seating arrangements...a dec3nt crowd in all things considered and the standard of music at it's highest again.

Mick, Chris and Phil always make the start, middle and end dovetail perfectly with the monthly guests..Karl Bodey, Gamekeeper and Barry Maleedy brought their own different flavours to the party and a kaleidescope of vinyl that portrayed perfectly the ethic of keeping it fresh, different and in some cases, relatively unknown...Four Tops tribute was class and unexpected, as were 2 Ivy Joe numbers " I Can Feel The Pain " and his fabulous version of his own composition " Lonely Girl ".

I'll put Barry's set in for perusal.

The Four Tops - Can't Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind

The Ohio Players - Love Slipped Through My Fingers

Claude ' Baby ' Huey - Driftin

Johnny Bartel - If This Isn't Love

The Spiedels - Dream Girl

T J Williams - Baby I Need You

The Four Tracks - Like My Love For You

Ivy Joe - Lonely Girl

Larry Davis - Ive Been Hurt So Many Times

Hayes Cotton - Black Wings Has My Angel

Donnie Burdick - Candle

Bill Bush - I'm Waiting

Ron Baxter - This Is It

Kenny Gamble - The Jokes On You

Toni Basil - Breakaway

Purvis Lee - You Don't Care

Bobby Bland - In The Same Old Bag Again

Solomon King - Save It

The Sonatas - Going On Down The Road

Dream Merchants - Stop You're Breaking My Heart

Tsu Toronados - A Thousand Wonders

Irma Franklin - Whispers ( Gettin Louder )

San Franciscan Tkos - Make Up Your Mind
