Had something similar happen to me about 20 years ago, while playing James' Brown's "I'm A Greedy Man" to a very full dancefloor at an office Christmas PARTY. Some 'hooray henry'-type came up mid-record and asked if I could play something funky, "instead of this rubbish".

I asked what he had in mind and was told "anything by James Brown will do the trick"...

The 'idiot at the dance' is not the exclusive property of the NS scene!

perhaps they had'nt heard Frank Wilson any way why no "Third finger left hand" and "two can have a party" call your self a motown DJ

Berry Gordy has got a lot to answer for . The best Motown tunes have always been performed by what I call the Motown B team , Bobby Taylor ,The Originals ,The fantastic Four etc .

Its a shame people dont appreciate quality .

Probably punter was vaguely aware of this, and was trying to appear 'clever' to boast to his/her mates how theyd used their vast power of musical knowledge to wind up the DJ as soon as they heard a track not on their sole Motown Chartbusters CD.

I've got no time for people who moan when a night is clearly advertised. If it's an oldies night, expect oldies, if it's northern/motown expect a mix, if it's rare soul, RnB and underplayed... expect a good time You'll never please everyone but at least if a night is promoted as having a clear music policy you can keep away the moaners. Or tell them not to come back if they don't like what's on offer.

Also if people have a problem with the music, they should complain to the promotor, not hassle the DJ during his spot.

It will happen more and more nowadays as venues use the catch all advertising of venues as Northern and Motown.Nothing wrong with Motown, but "Motown" fans often only like the obvious northern stuff and will only dance to a limited number of real motown tunes.

As a member of the team organising events for many years only once have we advertised an event as "northern soul and motown "-and the northern folks did not turn up.The motown fans were hard to please.Never again.

Talking of hard to please dancers--does anyone know who recorded " Something I Like".Play "something I like" is a common request and I really would like a copy of this popular tune in my box.

It seems like you're playing a pub do, and trying to foist on the attendees a playlist of known Motown gems that are past their sell by date on general soul night do's. But are unknown to the aforesaid. In turn making them look like idiots, and scoring brownie points yourself with committed Soul fans?

All of the radio stations I have worked on doing normal and speciallist soul shows didnt teach me anything.

And DJ'ing at The Regency Suites in Ilkeston, that Echoes magazine quoted as being the best soul night in the UK hasnt helped one iota.

Ditto for doing the monthly Soul and Motown night alongside Kev Roberts, Soul Sam, and Chris King..........nope....nothing.

As for the list, it was what it says, just the bunch of tracks that were played, how on earth could you misconstrue that?????? How the hell could stuff like Jimmy Mack impress..I ask you!

Hello there, just having read the the post's for this topic i feel that it need's clarifying that the soul night put on at the FED!!!!..... your do was put on at the same venue but this has nothing to do with the original FEDERATION SOUL CLUB which is run by Gary&Mall, this is a well established club and has it's 3rd Anniversary coming up on Saturday 5th September.....

Although someone did accuse the organisor of poaching punters from it, which wasnt true anyway, it was only held there as the regular venue The Polish club, was already booked.

Guys, as can happen on forums, when only the printed word is there, and not an actual human being speaking it, things get slightly/overly misconstrued.

My original post was to show my frustration at what was being said to me, when I had obviously played nothing else than Motown, to be the asked when I was going to play some!

I admit to rising to the bait over the "pub" gig thing by Martyn, and my reply was meant to show that Im not exactly inexperienced at playing a gig or 2, so please take my answers re those gigs in the spirit meant, hey, I wont even mention being asked to introduce Alexander O Neal @ The Royal Concert Hall, when he first came to the UK, or how when I was interviewing Bobby Womack, he spilled coke (cola""") all over the mixing desk!

Just in case the point of my OP has been lost, I'll repeat what I was trying to get across, and that was just sheer frustration having played 30 plus Motown tracks, and then being accused of not playing any! (yet)

Now, lets all play nicely again can we?

Couldn't agree more "talk about stepping on peoples toes" because when a charity night or fund raiser is being held at, and same name used as the regular monthly event and people have ago at the dj or visa versa, it gives it a bad name, ie reply number 3. ps some nice tunes on list though.

i remember seeing a flyer for this at the last shed in beeston.the guy handing them out just walked in handed the flyers out and then left which i thought was odd.the flyer had the details about where and when and that it was a charity night.then on the very bottom line was(in print very much smaller than used on the rest of the flyer)who the event would benifit.i also thought it was odd that the fed was holding a charity night because the events there are usually well promoted ie not with a white piece of a5.the negative vibe of this charity night and its punters will not put me off the main event there.i know a few of the punters who go there and know that is not the sort of comment you would get from them.
