I have a copy of this 45 which books at 40 quid in Manships guide. I just pop-siked it and the top sale was £334! Is this really in-demand for Northern/Popcorn collectors or is it more on a Tom Jones pop collectors item?

Cheers, Chris.

£334 is extremely high, it usually sells for £50-£75. I think that the demand comes from freakbeat and Joe Meek/R.G.M. collectors.

The US Tower release is the version produced by Joe Meek, which didn't get a release anywhere else. The RGM Sound connection is the one thing that gives this a (justifiably) high price tag.

The UK Decca release is a totally different cut - this is the release which is worth only about £40.

The Tower recording was produced by Joe Meek in 1963, along with four other tracks (these other tracks were relased on UK Columbia, against Tom Jones' will). The two UK Columbia 45s ("Little Lonely One/That's What We'll All Do" and "Lonely Joe/I Was A Fool) were released in 1965, in a bid to cash in on Tom Jones' fame with "It's Not Unusual" hitting the No. 1 spot. "Chills & Fever" on Tower was released in 1966, ONLY in the USA (for reasons we will probably never know).

The Decca cut of Chills & Fever was released in 1964, as Tom Jones' first UK single.
