Craig asked me to post up a list of the records I played on Friday night at the 44 so I am doing so, don't usually do this as someone always takes the p*ss so I'll just say, if you don't like oldies, don't read it.

And just for the record - every one of these was an original!

(This is over 2 spots)

TONY MIDDLETON - TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH - MGM ISSUE

ROSE BATISTE - HIT AND RUN - REVILOT (actually I lie, this was a pressing)

THELMA LINDSEY - PREPARED TO LOVE YOU - MAGIC CITY

CHAPTER FIVE - YOU CAN'T MEAN IT - UK CBS

WILLIE HUTCH - LOVE RUNS OUT - DUNHILL DJ

GEORGE BLACKWELL - CAN'T LOSE MY HEAD - SMOKE

TY KARIM - YOU REALLY MADE IT GOOD - ROMARK

DYNAMICS - I NEED YOUR LOVE - RCA DJ

NATURAL FOUR - I THOUGHT YOU WERE MINE - ABC DJ

WILLIE KENDRICKS - CHANGE YOUR WAYS - RCA DJ

DEAN COURTNEY - LOVE YOU JUST CAN'T WALK AWAY - MGM ISSUE

MORRIS CHESTNUT - TOO DARN SOULFUL - AMY DJ

FOUR PERFECTIONS - I'M NOT STRONG ENOUGH - PARTY TIME

EDWIN STARR - MY KIND OF WOMAN - RIC TIC

HERBERT HUNTER - I WAS BORN TO LOVE YOU - SPAR DJ

DONI BURDICK - BARI TRACK - SOUND IMPRESSION

STEINWAYS - YOU'VE BEEN LEADING ME ON - OLIVER DJ

DENNIS DELL - BETTER USE YOUR HEAD - UK CBS ISSUE

CAJUN HART - GOT TO FIND A WAY - WB DJ

VAN DYKES - SAVE MY LOVE FOR A RAINY DAY - MALA DJ

JOHNNY WYATT - THIS THING CALLED LOVE - BRONCO

CHUBBY CHECKER - YOU JUST DON'T KNOW - UK CAMEO PARKWAY

JACKIE EDWARDS - I FEEL SO BAD - UK ISLAND

LUTHER INGRAM - EXUS TREK - HIB

VIBRATIONS - CAUSE YOU'RE MINE - EPIC DJ

SAM WARD - SISTER LEE - GROOVE CITY

WILLIE TEE - WALKING UP A ONE WAY STREET - UK ATLANTIC

DENA BARNES - IF YOU EVER WALK - INFERNO DJ

GARNET MIMMS - LOOKING FOR YOU - UK UA DJ

YOUNGBLOOD SMITH - YOU CAN SPLIT - VERVE DJ

RUBY ANDREWS - JUST LOVING YOU - ZODIAC

STANLEY MITCHELL - GET IT BABY - DYNAMO DJ

ART FREEMAN - SLIPPING AROUND - UK ATLANTIC

SEVEN SOULS - I STILL LOVE YOU - OKEH

MONIQUE - IF YOU LOVE ME - ACETATE

The point is - there's about 8 requests in there of records I wouldn't have played personally but I'll always play a record if I've got it, and the people danced to them so whats up with that? The second set I did, when people had had a bit to drink, the floor was busy for every record, which is the idea as far as I'm concerned.

I'd rather scoop my eyes out with a spoon and pour sulphuric acid into the empty sockets than even put one of those in my box let alone play one!

[/quote

You'll probably find both a spoon and the acid on the dump it site where you work as well  ]

What about requests??

2 X classic scepter/wand tracks and a floor filler from the mecca??

Playing for the crowd my arse.

Ed

No, two tenth-rate Scepter Wand tracks that about 3 people plus Ian Levine like, and an overplayed, overrated pile of cack, I'd be doing people a favor not playing those three records, thats playing to the crowd for you.

Cue about ten sheep replying to say they always liked those tracks...

The Carstairs is brilliant IMO. Baa

Agree with Pete though asthe others are crap. Again IMO of course.

Sorry PETE, I read previously about your opinions on those tracks and could not resist casting the bait. EASY EASY EASY.

Ed

Booooooo.....

Are you saying too much garbage was played in hindsight, or were you saying it at the time? I was 14 or 15 and I loved Paul Anka, Wombat, Jumping At The Go Go, Afternoon Of The Rhino, Lonely Man, Michael & Raymond, Bobby Paris, Manifesto, David & The Giants - all those mad stompers - I'd never have dreamt to question whether they had soul content or not. And I'm not gpoing to go into denial now because people say they have no soul content. There is a difference between Northern Soul and Soul. I'm not a soul fan. I love Northern Soul though.

I'm saying too much garbage was played at the time. The problem was that 14 & 15 year olds didn't know it was garbage. Personally, I was listening to very, diffrent music by the time Wigan had its moment of glory and only knew ( very vaguely) what was going on by reading magazines, on my night shifts in fabric printing mill,

belonging to a kid on the day shift with baggy pants. But I like to think that I'd've called them garbage if I had been aware of them.I can remember an ex record dealing buddy of mine - a slightly older guy who was a bit of a guru - warning me in about 1970 that Bubblegum music ( which at that time we were calling stuff like Tony Christie and which was being requested in the non- Soul clubs where Soul enthusiast djs played) would soon be on the scene due to the inevitable rarity of real danceable soul. That guy was right.

But even if I had fallen under the spell of the non- Soul stompers, I don't think I'd STILL like them now.I mean I used to quite like tinned spaghetti and processed peas.
