To my knowledge, this year seems to be one of the busiest with regards to the volume of live acts appearing in the UK.

I for one ain't too bothered about live acts to be honest. However I do know that many love to see, in person, the acts that have given us so much pleasure over the years.

I imagine a lot of you will be going to Prestatyn next year and I was wondering if the live acts were the big draw for you?

Maybe one or two of you can comment on the recent Northampton/Hemsby events etc...

To be brutally honest Shane I never even watch the live acts at a weekender, I am either in the bar or catching up on sleep.The only time I really enjoyed seeing and meeting the acts was on the LA Soul Trip and that was a completely different set up

i actually am not too keen on seeing live acts because it destroys the mental image i have.

i like to think of the artists as they were, not as 65-year-olds! to me it smacks a little bit of mick jagger doing jumping jack flash with his bus pass in his back pocket.

also, i've seen a few who were just past it.

having said that, meeting artists and chatting to them is great and obviously some of them are still on top of their game so can understand why others would want to see them perform.

At hemsby last year i was looking forward to the live acts, but i find that they tend to break up the night. I think that they would be better on a bit earlier, say 8-9pm. That way it doesn;t break up the night and people can choose whether to see them or not.

Must admit the thought of hearing Nolan Porter perform "If I could only be sure" at Prestatyn is tempting.

Ray Pollard (RIP) performance at the 100 club was magic that I will never forget.

Meeting Jessie Davis over there was the highlight of 2004, he seemed to be ignored by most and when our group got hold of him he was literly welling up such a pleasure he nearly had a tear in his eye, for me that is so much better than watching them on stage, we even all burst out into song with him, friend lisa had him up on the dance floor, a memory that will last longer than any act ive seen on stage.

Take or leave them at Heamsby this year I left the main room after Kim done a few songs, went back to my apartment and sat listeng to me new Eddie and Ernie CD with a can or two.

For me only seen 1 that was any good Bobby Hutton, never ever thorght I would ever see him perform live and for me he was magic, Live acts do spoill the flow and take away some of the magic from the sounds we love. Northen Soul is a vinyl based scene as opposed to jazz or blues which apprechates the artists talant as opposed to the sound of a record on the dance floor. Again just my oppinion and not for one moment questioning the talant of the the artists.

Never liked seeing live acts at all nighters. No problem with seeing them at a concert venue but not in the middle of a soul night. Anyway if it's not David Bowie I wouldn't pay to see anybody.

Agreed, love to go to concerts although the past year I havent been to any but the act's are on at the wrong time at a weekender IMO, I think that they would be much better suited early on so it doesnt split the night up or in a seperate room all together (in another part of the country )

Seen quite a few live soul acts and must say, would rather listen to their records and remember them how they used to sound and not forgeting the words or not even remembering the songs they sang!! Listening to Ruby Andrews, IMO, murder "Just Lovin You" live (after having it played as we came out after signing the book at my wedding) just made my blood run cold. Previous comment is correct Northern Soul is a vinyl based thing and long may it reign. Having said that Bobby Patterson was a real showman!! But one swallow dont make a summer.

Depends who it is doesn't it? I was very impressed with Lorraine Chandler, Popcorn Wylie and Eddie Holman when I saw them but other acts less so... Events like Hemsby where they try to get people from a diminishing roster of 50s acts at least demonstrate that if you do want to see original performers you better hurry up 'cos they won't be around too much longer.

The LA Soul Trip sure was something else! Just a culmination of the time that I have spent listening to the music that emotionally gripped me many years ago and has had a significant impact on my life! It was wonderful to meet some of those talented artists and for them to see just what their music has meant to so many of us! This was truly a time to forget the politics of the scene and to just take advantage of such an opportunity! It is an experience that I will never forget!

Another fantastic experience regarding live acts was seeing Bettye LaVette performing 'Let Me Down Easy' with tears rolling down her cheeks. She put absolutely everything into that performance and it was very moving and again unforgettable!

I for one am very glad that I have these special memories and many more besides!

Never really been a factor that would make me go to one venue over another. I like seeing artists live but not at a soul night. I have seen some great performances saying that Barbara Lynn and Prince Philip Mitchell were both superb at Fleetwood . I agree they are on too late though, put em on early and get em out of the way.

i share the reasons given above, but also the "beertowel brigade" come out en-masse, slop beer, food and other refuse over the entire dancefloor so the place looks and smells like a landfill site after the live acts have finished - then they all go to bed about midnight, leaving us sitting in their filth all night!!!!

if i wanted to see a "chicken in the basket" caberet show, i'd go to the pheonix club

come on tony blair, don't ban smoking at public venues - ban these live acts that can't even remember the lyrics to their own songs

For me I think you cant beat seeing a soul legend perform live, I have always tried to see as many live artists as I possibly can! Give me some good live acts any day of the week! One guy at the Northampton Weekender said to me that to prefer listening to a record than seeing the artist in person live on stage, is like prefering pornography to real sex!! lol I am not sure about that but it made me laugh! lol

ooh I did one year at one weekender cant remembe which it was though sit in the modern room for the act to come on as I had seen the bloke earlier on, quite young too and he had a lovely bottom........ don't tell anyone though please tra lalalaaaaaaa

Quite fancy the LA trip next year, but for the social side of meeting the singers than listening to them sing, but think a trip to see Joanie Sommers is onthe cards before that one as she isnt very well and I promised her I would visit

i have seen some pretty poor acts over the years and i take on board the point about old men / women on stage ruining ones ideal of how they were in their heyday...but..

the masqueraders @ northampton blew em all out of the water ( i may be a little biased they are me all time faves )

quality live performance as were all the others on over the weekend..to be honest chuck jackson could have been the bloody queen for all i cared as i had to retire to the bar after the masqueraders for a stiff drink then upstairs to change me knickers

Mark, you've hit the nail on the head, this is exactly what happens.Always makes me laugh at midnight when the 'beertowel' brigade all go off back to their beds and take the little children they brought along with them LOL whats the point of going to a weekender with nighters? May as well just go to a concert.

The ONLY time at a nighter I have enjoyed a live act was in the 70's when I saw Junior Walker at The Wirrina in Peterborough, his preformace to me will never be beaten.

I enjoy live acts in concert setting or as I said before on the LA trip but at nighters and weekenders? errr no ta
