Of course our Steven might have been taking the Michael, as in the commonly used term in some quarters "Norman Soultrousers" meaning your baggy pant wearing man about town ;o))) Which often gets used to define the music as in Norman Soultrouser Music ;o))))

I think its atrotious that records of such quality can be mercilessly abused for the sake of a bit of cheap television. I know they mean more to us than the rest of the population (and we just have to live with it etc etc) but it still makes me want to hide behind a cushion with my teeth gritted when I hear a record like that plundered.

Felt similar when hearing The Delites on 4's Wife Swap. And when they splash Sue and Prestige stuff all over Changing Rooms and crap like that.

I can handle it when a record is used well and has been specifically chosen......one of the few cases is the use of Derek Martin's 'Daddy Rolling Stone' in 'Sexy Beast' with Winston. That was tastefully done and well chosen.

I don't subscribe to the idea that hearing a snipett of The Trends on a tacky ad for an even tackier programme will have flocks of new people eager to discover the scene. In fact it probably went mostly over their heads, therefore use Britney or some shite like that.

I'll be popping my soap box back in the van then.

Personally i don't think it's a particularly bad thing especially when the use a quallliddy item like the Trends who knows, it's catchy enough to attract the odd new bod who may end up getting as much out of all this as we do!!!!!!!!! And who could begrudge them that ;o)))

I respect your opinion; but that's just how we were in the seventies. I mean, pick up any copy of Blues and Soul from '70 onwards and you'll find someone complaining about over exposure of "our" music. I used to feel the same way, but these days I'm far more relaxed, and if anyone soul savvy media type wants to borrow some cool from the music we love, then God bless 'em.

My 13 year old daughter was even known to be humming "California Soul" a few days ago. I didn't brainwash her; though I've tried often enough. Colonel Sanders can take the credit for that. Ironic though, coz she's a vegetarian.

I don't think putting these tracks on TV will make anyone come along. For a start most TV viewers dont even realise its northern or soul.

I was talking to a chap in a pub saturday and he asked where we were all going.I told him the 100 club etc... and he said tell me a northern soul record that I will have heard and know.I said about the KFC ads and Frank Wilson in particular and he said he had never really paid attention the the music that went along with ads :-(

Dayo> I work in the West End for advertising agencies editing their test adverts, and believe me, none of them are savvy when it somes to good music.

The reason its done is exactly what Mikey said. I understand there is nothing you can do to stop it (although I once managed to stave off the use of Marie Knight and Sugar Pie deSanto on something although I doubt they would have tested with those tracks on) but it still fills me with horror everytime I hear a great record used as filler or backing to some peice of banal television, like a man wallpapering for example.

Surely these records are worth more than that? If they are going to be used by the media by all rights they should be being lauded as great undiscovered peices of music (and the right money going to the right people) not treated as another bit of backing filler as you would with perhaps 'Shuddupayaface' or 'Pass The Dutchie'.

I know thats slightly in the realms of fantasy but its only because of the love of the soul records really.

With regards to the KFC ads my mate who has no interest in soul music has been inspired no end by these adverts. He has never eaten so much fried chicken!!

Personally it doesn't bother me what songs they use for whatever reason. A good song is a good song end of. It's not going to get thousands of people into the scene. However it may change the tune whistled by your window cleaner from 'Bat out of hell' to 'moonlight, music and you. That can't be a bad thing can it?

I'm caught between being annoyed and quite pleased.

I dont particularly like my fave records advertising dead animals in breadcrumbs. I think it cheapens it beyond belief.

But I quite like doing the washing up and rushing into the lounge because some TV prog has a tune on I like. As for keeping Northern Soul, underground or secret or whatever. There is a phrase about a locked stable door and a bolted horse!

If there are rooms at colleges with 20 somethings dancing to landslide just because it is a fun record to dance too, then i'm not too bothered about that. in fact i think its cool. It IS a fun record to dance to. Isnt that what Matt is doing in Leeds?? Good luck to him too.

Then there is the stuff about coming to designated soul nights and taking beer or cigarettes onto dancefloors, that needs to be addressed. But most of us are old enough to know how to be diplomatic in this case. (except Dave Rimmer who arranges the firing squad ;-) heh heh).

So all in all, I have an arse full of splinters so no darts for me this weekend.

Never saw the strippers, mainly due to the fact I think that most of them mucked up the (un)dress rehearsals by losing grip of their zimmer frames!!

I do remember a regional punk programme in the South during 1978 called "Revolver" (did you get it in other regions?), which was recorded live, and featuered some of the best punk groups of the time, including an early line-up of Dire Straits before they went sensible. Hosted by Peter Cook, who always had a nubile wench sitting on his desk slowly attempting a strip. Yep - you guessed it! Even by the end of the programme, she was still well clad!!
