Just bought a described as M- copy off eBay. It looks decent. But there's a LOT of surface noise. Was this originally a noisy pressing?

I don't think this was a noisy pressing (although this isn't rare, probably many copies were pressed, so i guess there could be an issue with some pressing). Did you try cleaning the record?

Paul, my copy is definitely pitted. Looked like it was baked in the sun or something. Gonna chalk it up to lousy press. Suppose I can't go hard on eBay feedback on the guy...and will keep my eyes out for a cleaner copy.

Bought my M- copy offa soul source and yes slight surface noise.

Top record, would love a non noisey one

It was the last record released on the UK Sue label, this was not noisy, I trust you are referring to the Mayfield American release.
