Posted February 26, 201213 yr I would like to get a book on identifying originals, boots etc. should i get Manships or Brown and Koppels or is there another to consider?
February 27, 201213 yr I wish I could get some of the things at Tim's prices (although actually some of the stuff is priced that way on his lists). Manship's book is better if you specifically want bootleg information, and it has more listings overall. Edited February 27, 201213 yr by boba
February 27, 201213 yr Does that mean its available as an e-book Chalky? Steve no mate, as I told you at Roter Salon a few weeks ago you can use it free of charge online.. https://www.raresoulvinyl.co.uk
February 27, 201213 yr Does that mean its available as an e-book Chalky? Steve no mate, you just type the record in and it gives you a valuation. Be good if it gave you bootleg info as well. There's always Soul Source for bootleg info as well as the guides, some great knowledge on here.

Anglo American Records (Tim's) on-line resource does give a 'price guide' but you will often find his own prices differ from the guide. However, still worth a look..

I didn't know his price guide was free online, if it is, I would rely on that and popsike, etc. If you need a bootleg guide I would buy the manship Edited February 27, 201213 yr by boba

There's always Soul Source for bootleg info as well as the guides, some great knowledge on here. I think it's very helpful to have a guide. Also, if the reason you want to know about a bootleg is to know whether or not to buy something in an auction, you probably don't want to tip the world off to the auction by asking about whether an item is a bootleg or not.

Me too! just checked some of my records on his guide and am thinking i might as well just bin 'em...
February 28, 201213 yr https://www.raresoulm...guides/PG/all/1 Don't buy the standalone bootleg guide though, as its old and the actual price guide has way more information in it. unfortunately the price guide is much more expensive. but if you avoid getting burned once it's worth it i guess.
February 28, 201213 yr I've got em both but if I had to pick one it would definitely be Manship's because of the label scans for bootleg identification

I agree with you Bob. I buy any guide or book published and agree Manship's latest guide is invaluable for boots. I'd like to see an up to date stand alone boot guide though.

February 29, 201213 yr Author Thanks for all the info guys. Just ordered the manship price guide edition 5.
February 29, 201213 yr The golden rule though is if you know nothing about a particular disc, get as many opinions as possible, don't stick to one guide. There is hell of a lot goes on at nighters and soul nights and this has an effect on prices, demand etc. Plus new boots appear on a weekly basis and it is damn hard to keep track of some of them.

Will do Chalky. I wanted the info mainly for checking out some suspect records in my box. If I get stuck with any I will check old posts or post on the site I am amazed at the depth of knowledge of some of the guys on here.
March 2, 201213 yr Author The Manship USA 5th edition price guide arrived this morning. Suprised that their 3rd edition guide to bootlegs was also in the package. Manship says on his site that this is now twelve years old and that the 5th edition replaces it, but having a quick look through there looks to be loads of useful info.
March 4, 201213 yr again, don't get the separate boot guide because it has been updated and rolled into price guide 5. Speaking to john his main reason for this is the content and wieght of 800 pages. i for one dont want RSI. LOL. also it allows the quality input of the boot guide more of which are still appearing. an ap for the iphone was also discussed a few years ago but not sure yet. personally i enjoy trawling through it and i am sure many more are. It is the best quality and as you know he has a wealth of knowledge willing to impart.
