There's one reply at the moment suggesting it's an album track yet I have a 45. Is it scarce/rare even though it may not fit in with todays trend. Your input welcomed

If you're a massive fan of Wayne Wadhams' work you should check out some of the Fifth Estate's 1960s psych/garage/baroque-ish pop stuff, although if I'm honest I have a real soft spot for post Wadhams 'Time Tunnel' album.

I guess you might like their version of "It's Waiting There for You" as cut by Reparata and the Delrons. If I was a betting man, though, I'd wager you're not really interested in anything other than TSOB, right?

I had a cassette with this on which just said 'Cleethorpes', it was around 1980. It was a right mish-mosh so it could have been from anywhere, it was being played by Searling. I suspect it was recorded in the late 70's as there were a few "Grapevine" releases in the spot too. Apart from yours, I have only seen the 7" listed once, but it was already sold when I rang about it; so there's at least 2?

This was a niter tape with Searling introducing it as ' night time shadows'

I recall you buying it from the Bowl .. a blind buy as it was simply the fact it was called 'The Sound of Boston' that made you get it

So the story goes after a chat with Soul Sam a couple of minutes ago:

Sam got what we know as "Night Time Shadows" from Richard in trades. Sam seems to think it was he who covered it up knowing that Richard S hadn't done much with the track (although Simon T's tape would suggest it was Richard that covered it up) and it was the kind of thing that Sam was using and collecting at the time. The first time he played it he had a lot of enquiries (although until a few minutes ago he couldn't remember the artists / title / label, only remebering the c/up details) and subsequently says he let it go for approaching the £400 price mark. Bearing in mind this was the latter end of the 70's that was a lot of money. He doesn't remember who it went to. As Andy said in a previous post, I bought my copy from John Anderson at Soul Bowl as a "blind buy" because of the title and it would stack up that John didn't know what it was as it was still a one off and covered up. So mine has sat in the box and never been played out... I guess you could call it Mint minus having been played on Andy's deck at home once to record it (as he did at the time) and mine likewise.

That strange world of Northern Soul turns full circle yet again.

Can you date it in any way? Sam did Winter Gardens as a regular before he became a regular at Wigan. He only joined the Casino crew towards the latter days as you know, when he was on his Modern front. Richard had joined it at this point but was still championing his 60's sounds although it was the time where such as ZZ & Co and Ike Strong were entering the scene. It was also the time where, for those not within the scene at the time, Richard was at the verge of leaving the Casino because of the music policy and his beliefs, and Sam was buying everything post Northern a la sixties sound. Sam started playing things such as Mel Carter "No Work, No Play" and Coffee "Casanova" whereas Richard was still much behind Mr Soul, Martells etc etc but was movin into the Modern sound. Oh how I wish we had dated / catalogued everything back then, rather tha just recording them just to play in the car when we were going to the next venue. That damn Rix was the the only one who had a glimpse of the future.... Sorry Andy, your'e a star.

It seems as though there are many folk out there who remember it as the cover up and yet barely anyone I have spoken to knew what the real title was. There is just the one listing on YouTube as far as I can see. Does anyone know how to identify the person that added the track as they may be the only other person to have the 45 by all accounts (unless of course it was taken from the album which I still havent seen). Would really be interested to find out as much detail about this stange but seemingly obscure track... just for nostalgia's sake as it were.

Good God! I'd forgotten all about those nights. Such a long time ago. Memories have faded but I certainly remember going over to Mablethorpe a few times. Not a great deal of locals into the scene but those that were certainly had enthusiasm and became good friends at the likes of the Cleethorpes do's etc.

As far as the 45 goes, it has honestly been on the decks no more than twice. When I got it, I kinda recoginsed it and it wasn't until Andy (Rix) reminded me what it was that everything fell into place. He taped it, as he did all my new acquisitions and I taped it. I really don't recall ever playing it out as by the time I got it, Sam had taken it off his playlist and with no one else having a copy it seemed to lose its impetus.
