Anyone drop into a place called " Sounds " in Manchester before the last train to the Casino?? picking up at all those stations on the way,cassette players giving what volume they could , some dancing in the aisles..... ive only ever talked to one lad in recent years who knew it.

I used to get off my train at Victoria and then over the town...what i can't remember is exactly where it was,thats long left me and Manchester changed to me as i'd not been there after about 1984 until about 10 years ago.

Where was it ? ......to me i'd never known being able to go into a pub and hear Northern playing on a jukebox........at least my memory tells me it was a jukebox and not piped in.

Rountrees Sounds wasn't it. Near Picadilly Station. I remember it full of shady characters . Only went a couple of times.

according to manchester beat it was in spring gardens so more or less in between picadilly and victoria for some reason i always assumed it was nearer to Victoria station at the corn exchange.

Rowntrees Sound was ground floor and lower ground floor of the Corn Exchange on the Corporation Street side there's a bar and grill there now.

The Manchester Beat site actually makes it clear that Spring Gardens and Rowntrees were separate venues. I think Spring Gardens must have closed before Rowntrees as I don't remember it.

As for being shady - when you were a 15/16 year old in Manchester in the mid 70s just about everywhere was shady!

had quite a few cups of tea and toast in that cafe on a sunday morning as the first bus home from manchester wasn't till 11.00ish in the morning, there was always quite a few who had been to wigan, think they had to up their sugar order as everyone seemed to put 3 or 4 sugars in their coffee's lol, you would probably looked sha.dy to me Kegsy

Quite a few threads on here give Rowntree Sounds a mention - if you put it search you should find them - a rum old place for sure.

It wasn't that shady just a normal bar etc. I use to work above it in the Corn Exchange.

It was open as a normal disco in the 60s and we use to pop in it at lunchtime sometimes (some clubs were open at lunch time them days)

On Sundays some of the Wheel allniter crowd use to go there amongst lots of other places.

Rowntrees did have other clubs and cafes

Thanks for the replies lads ,i had a look on the walk about thing on google and see now where that is......i didn't remember the Rowntree's bit in the name though i must say.....as i was saying it all looks different to me now,i used to think it overlooked a grass square or park,may have done as there's a lot of new buildings.

All you had to do as you'll know if you went was to watch for the mass exodus of bag carrying leather macked types heading out and you knew it was time for the train !!
